Issue 81 27 September 2013 Dear Parents, Term is now well underway and the children are settled into the school routine, which always takes a little adjustment after the long summer holidays. The boarders have made a particularly strong contribution over the past few weeks and I commend them on their adaptability and social skills. Tonbridge Headmaster It was great to welcome Tim Haynes, Headmaster of Tonbridge School, to NPS last week and hear about the progress of our recent leavers who are pupils at Tonbridge. Our prefects enjoyed meeting him and Mr Haynes was impressed by their relaxed but confident and articulate conversation over lunch. Some of our senior girls even asked if Mr Haynes might reconsider Tonbridge’s ‘boys only’ policy by the end of the meal! Evening Societies I am very impressed at the start of this school year by the number of pupils who are attending our evening society meetings. Whether it in Languages, Literature, Maths, Science or other subjects, I encourage children of all ages to take part in these voluntary sessions between 5 and 6pm. There is, of course, a balance to be struck to ensure that the children are not too over- committed. However enthusiastic we are about the value of these societies, pupils should not feel pressured into attending; they are designed to enhance the learning programme and be enjoyable and productive. Ploughing Match This year’s event will take place at Upper Hardres near Canterbury and our Reception, Class 1 and 2 will attend, together with our Heads of School. Friends meeting I am delighted to announce the election of Stephanie Aiyagari as the new Chairman and Nalini Vaughan as the new Treasurer. Thank you to all of the parents who attended the meeting last week and for the wonderful ideas that they brought to the table; there has obviously been a lot of thought and planning going on over the summer holidays and the Friends have some very exciting plans for this year. The minutes of the meeting will arrive by email very shortly. If you would like to offer your support of any of the Friends ventures, please do contact Stephanie Aiyagari directly or through the school office. My aim is always that this should be as inclusive a group of parents as possible and all are welcome! Pre-Prep Harvest Service, Friday 4th OctoberPlease put the date in your diary for a 9.30am start in our church.

Open Morning, 5th OctoberThe school has recently forwarded a copy of the Open Day invitation to you. We would love you to come and tourthe school and see your child’s work during the morning. We are very aware that the majority of our marketing isthrough word of mouth and personal recommendations about the school. Please do pass on the e-vitation tofriends or colleagues who might be interested in learning a little more about the school at Open Day.

Year 3 Parents’ Evening, Monday 7th OctoberWe look forward to welcoming parents of Year 3 pupils to the school at 6.30pm for their first Prep School parents’meeting.

NPS Maths Enrichment Day On Tuesday 8th October Northbourne will be hosting a Maths Enrichment Day. Children in Years 2, 3 and 4 from anumber of local primary schools will be joining Northbourne pupils to participate in activities designed to broadentheir understanding of Maths and hopefully have some fun.

The title of the day’s activities is ‘Using What I know to help me answer What I Don’t or Where Do I Start’?

Anti-Bullying WeekEvery year we dedicate time at the beginning of the School year to setting clear parameters for pupils to follow intheir interactions with others. Young children can be clumsy in their relationships at times, but with clear andagreed policies and procedures, we can make a safer and kinder school community. Instances of bullying betweenpupils are very rare at Northbourne Park, but when they do arise, it is important that the pupils understand that weare a telling school. Whether it is online or in their daily interaction with each other, it is important that yourchildren tell you or a member of staff if they are uncomfortable about anything in or out of school. Please do talkto your child about bullying and how to keep safe.

Interim Boarding InspectionI am delighted with the outcome of the ISI BoardingInspection last May, which identified great strength inour new boarding arrangements. Having only onespare bed in the boys’ boarding house is testament tothe success of the boarding team and the way in whichthey put boarders’ needs at the centre of theirthinking!

The ISI team insisted that we heighten the security ofour boys’ boarding house with the use of four securitykey pads, which as you know were fitted over thesummer. I am disappointed that these have affectedthe flow of people around this area of the school but Iam grateful to pupils and staff for adjusting so quicklyto the new arrangements.

Thank you, as ever, for your generous support of allthat we do as a school.

With best wishes, Edward

General NewsA WORD FROM THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT

I must thank all parents of Year 6 pupils for allowing their children to bring in to their recent History lesson piecesfrom their family memorabilia collection. The brief was to find and bring in some evidence that your family existedin the past and the evidence could fall into any of four categories – oral, visual, written or physical. The range ofobjects was staggering, including a Welsh coal miner’s lantern to multi-generational family photographs to storiesfrom great grandparents who were prisoners of war. Each pupil was really absorbed in what their peers had toshare with the class and they are the richer for it. So my thanks really must go to you for your participation withthis task.

Another project that is on the go involves thegrandparents of Year 5 pupils who have been set anextended piece of writing or ‘homework’ which is duein at the end of the half term break! This task highlightshow the historical process is useful beyond theclassroom and serves as a talking point across thegenerations. I am hopeful that each grandchild in Year 5will learn at least one thing that they didn’t alreadyknow about the formative years of their grandparents.Maintaining memories, happy and sad, are part of thisproject and I hope that it won’t prove to be too taxingon the older generation. I haven’t received anynegative feedback just yet so I thank you in advance forallowing this exchange of information to take place.

Following the previous newsletter we entered into our first Long Weekend of the term. For many of our boardersthis was their first opportunity to spend a full weekend at school without any lessons (woo!). This meant that wehad plenty of time to play games and have some downtime. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side, butthis did not deter us from our fun and games! In fact, it made a pleasant change to playing football, a very popularpastime for many of our boys! Instead we gave the children ablack bin bag and some newspaper and set them the challenge towork in groups and produce an ‘outfit’ with their materials. Theresults were both creative and funny!! The children had a lot offun and worked really well together to come up with somebrilliant new fashion designs; watch out for them on the catwalksnext year!!

On Sunday, the sun decided to join us for a while so we took theopportunity to explore the school grounds and a little further afield on a walk. Dressed in protective boiler suits, off we wenthaving a lovely stroll through the countryside… until we cameacross a giant, muddy and apparently ‘unavoidable’ puddlewhere the boarders, both girls and boys alike, had a great timejumping in and generally getting each other as muddy aspossible! What fun! Then it was back to school for a shower, somelunch and a movie- afternoon!

The school week flew by as always and in the evenings theboarders enjoyed a variety of activities including badminton, basketball and art. Many of the children have also already takenpart in football or hockey matches during their Games sessionsand they are enjoying working towards victory alongside theirEnglish team mates. For many of our Erasmus boarders theevening activity time is a chance to work through prep in theknowledge that once it is completed they are already with

their friends for some downtime in the boarding house.

Last weekend we had Saturday school, which involved lessons as well as Outdoor Education in the Leadershipvillage and whole-school Games. For many of the boarders this was their first opportunity to experience NPSOutdoor Education and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The aim of this first session was team building andcommunication and involved a series of fun challenges around the school grounds… a little different to theirregular timetable! On Saturday evening the girls went for another walk while the boys had a calm evening inpreparation for the birthday celebrations on Sunday…

Sunday saw four, yes four, of our boys celebrating birthdays, so wefelt this called for a party. We went to Church, had a fun football, artand movie afternoon and then it was time for an English Party Tea(including lemonade, cocktail sausages and a giant cake!-Thank youLesley) followed by a Roller Disco in the Gym! As you can imagine, this was a fun-filled and very exciting evening and a great time washad by all - staff included! The roller skating posed a challenge forsome of our boarders but after a little while most people were doinga pretty good job of staying upright! Aside from a slight issue with aslippery-floor meaning we had to just ‘disco’ not ‘roller’ for the last30 minutes, we had lots of smiling faces, so all in all a very successfulevening! Happy Birthday boys!

I look forward to updating you on our coming activities in the nextnewsletter. For now, I hope you have a safe and enjoyable weekend, particularly to those children who arereturning to Paris to visit their families.

Once again, please do not hesitate to bein touch with us.

1st XI Football vs Dover College (Home)

This was a good Dover College side and we were going to have to be at our best if the result was to go our way.

Although we scored early on in the match, it was down to a fine save from Ferdinand Plessix that kept us in the game. Anunfortunate incident involving a pass back that was picked up by our keeper resulted in an indirect free kick being awarded inthe penalty box and Dover duly slotted the ball into the net.

We eventually went into the break 2-1 up. Both sides scored early on in the second half making the score 3-2 to NPS.

It was only until the last 15 minutes that we really began to dominate the match. Dover began to tire and started to chase theball. We kept our shape and allowed the ball to do the work, passing into space and being competitive in every department. This resulted in us winning the game 7-2.

Well done on your first win of the season boys and let’s hope there will be many more. Keep working hard, be competitive andalways look to distribute the ball. Man of the Match: Jean-Baptiste Defour

Under-9 Football vs Wellesley House (Home)

In our first match of the season, and for the Year 3s their first match ever, we started with great caution trying to do the rightthing but we let Wellesley dictate the pace of the game. Although we played with great spirit, we were slow to close down theplayer with the ball, giving them too much space and time. Consequently we were 3-0 down by half time.

In our half time talk we decided to concentrate on denying the opposition space and time on the ball and try to mark moretightly. We made a huge improvement becoming far more determined and thoughtful in our marking. Wellesley scored onemore goal but we can be proud of the improvement shown throughout the game.

Players of the match: The whole team. ‘Don’t stop believing!’

1st XI Football vs Junior King’s (Home)

The battle cry was simple – look to close the opposition down early and be brave and very resolute!! This the boys did andmore!!

This King’s team are physically strong, fast and their midfield players and strikers are very skilful.

Right from the start, we displayed the type of tenacity and determination that was required and kept denying King’s theopportunity to score. However, they sent wave after wave of attack upon our goal. Our defence remained rock steady andFerdinand Plessix was enjoying a day to remember in the goals. He displayed the agility of a cat and the bravery of lion. Arise SirFerdinand the Lion Heart!

With King’s beginning to panic, we were certainly obstructing their game plan and structure. Alas, they eventually scored 5minutes from half time and we went into the break 1-0 down.

We were a little flat in the first 5 minutes of the second half and unfortunately conceded another goal, and although we werebeginning to tire, our heads did not drop! Sir Ferdinand continued on his quest to keep us in the game and time after time heused his skill and gloves to great effect! A truly phenomenal performance – well done! We then conceded an own goal righttowards the end and the final score was 3-0 to Junior King’s.

Lads I was proud of your efforts today. You will be disappointed because you put everything you had into this performance andit still hurt not to win. However, you will have learnt a great deal from this match and it will make you better and morecomplete footballers. Well done and I hope this drives you to want to achieve further.

Man of the Match: Ferdinand Plessix for his outstanding goalkeeping display.

NPS U11 Primary Schools Football Tournament - Tuesday 8th October 2013This tournament is now in its 12th year and it has always been an extremely successful and competitive afternoon offootball. The number of schools participating increases year on year and I am sure that this tournament will be no exception.

We have decided to bring the event forward by a month in order to accommodate more schools in the competition andwithout losing any daylight hours!! This should mean that the finals are played in daylight rather than by car headlights!!!

Good luck to all of the competitors and let’s hope that the weather Gods smile upon us with glorious sunshine!! Craig Riley

Sports News2nd XI Football vs Junior King’s (Home)

The 2nd Team boys ran out onto the field a bit disorganised at first but when the whistle blew for the start of the match theysettled quickly and began to string some decent passes together and have a few attempts on goal.

We gave away too much of our possession by just kicking it up the field and hoping for the best rather than slowing the balldown and sending it out wide, although some phenomenal defence and great clearing of the ball managed to keep King’s fromscoring. We went into half time with the score being 0-0.

We began the second half well and played in the King’s half for some time before a counter attack drove us back which lead toa King’s corner which ended in a very unlucky goal. We were now 1-0 down. The opposition scored a further two goals, leavingthe final score at 3-0.

We definitely need to improve on our communication with each other and keep our heads up when things aren’t going ourway.

There is a lot of work still to be done, but we have a good foundation to work on which is promising for future fixtures.

Man of the Match: Victor Saint Bris

Under-9 Football vs Junior King’s (Home)

We started well with more determination against a strong King’s team. Although we didn’t keep our team shape, we werequick to close down on the player with the ball. Despite this, we were 4 – 0 down by half time, having given a penalty and anown goal away.

In the second half we again made a huge improvement and although we were unable to pressure their goal, we showed ourtrue spirit with our boys giving their all which stifled the King’s play. We lost two further goals but can be proud of anotherimproved performance.

Players of the match: The whole team.

1st XI Football vs Wellesley House (Home)

This was a disappointing result. Still looking for our first league win and indeed our first league goal, small margins were goingto decide the victor of this match.

The game was evenly matched for the first half and although we conceded an early goal, Paddy Jackaman brought us level witha thunderous strike into the top of the net just before half time.

Unfortunately, it all fell apart immediately after the break. We allowed Wellesley to pass freely and didn’t close them down infront of goal. In the end, 10 minutes of ‘spectating’ and not clearing our lines, cost us a further 4 goals!! This was a pity, because we played some wonderful football in between this carnage, especially in the last 10 minutes.

Boys we have to learn to play 50 minutes of consistent football, where we all play to the game plan. If you do not convert yourpossession into points, then it is difficult to win in any sport.

Heads up boys – let’s keep the focus!

Man of the Match: Jean-Baptiste Defour

2nd Team Football vs Wellesley House (Home)

The 2nd team were faced up against much bigger boys during Wednesday’s match against Wellesley. This seemed to affect theway we played in a big way as we did not want to do anything with the ball. We did not challenge for ball in the air but ratherwaited for Wellesley to make the first move.

We backed away from the match and made some very silly decisions up front and at the back which allowed Wellesley to scoreeasy goals.

We went into the half time break 5:0 down. After some water and a few words of encouragement the boys were fired up andran back onto the pitch with purpose.

We played a very “gutsy” second half and although we still conceded a goal we managed to create a few scoring opportunitiesourselves. We need to switch on earlier in the match and go flat out from the first blow of the whistle.

The end score was 6:0 to Wellesley.

U13 Hockey v Junior King’s (Home)

Northbourne made a super start to this match with some lovely passing moves and crosses into the shooting circle. Carla,Camille and Honor displayed excellent stickwork at pace and the rest of the team backed up and used the space well. By halftime Carla had scored 2 goals, Camille 2 goals, Honor 1 goal and Ella, who is improving game by game, scored once with alovely strike and was unlucky to have had another shot into the goal disallowed.

At 6-0 up we were able to give some of our younger and less experienced girls a chance to play. They worked hard throughoutthe second half, coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions and defending well at the other end. The final score remained6-0 to Northbourne.

Players of the Match - the whole squad.

U9 Hockey v St Faith’s (Home)

This was the first hockey match ever for some of the girls. They were very excited and, once they had settled down, played avery good team game. Unfortunately we allowed 3 very quick goals from the opposition, which put us under pressure from thestart of the game.

In the second half, Lauren Spencer defended like a lioness protecting her cubs and Olivia Ryeland showed her talent bydribbling around St. Faith’s and taking numerous shots at goal. We managed to score 2 goals against a tenacious goal keeper. The girls improved so much and should be very proud of themselves.

Final score: lost 2-5

‘Man of the match’ – Lauren Spencer and Olivia Ryeland

U13 A Hockey v Wellesley House (Away)

We knew that Wellesley would be tough to beat at home and they certainly started off very strongly. Our defensive work, however, was solid and we managed to frustrate all their attacking moves, keeping the score at 0 – 0 by half time.

Again fitness levels played a part and eventually Wellesley broke through our defence in the second half to score twice. We didstring together some good moves and passes up the pitch and continued to make the opponents work hard. Final score was 2–0 to Wellesley.

U13 B Hockey v Wellesley House (Away)

With almost half our U13 B team being very new to Hockey, this match was a steep learning curve for them. Wellesley’s largepitch really tested the fitness levels of the girls as well as their ability to pass the ball over longer distances. They worked veryhard, Emily making some good saves in front of goal and Zita getting the ball into the Wellesley goal only to be denied a scoreas the ball hit her feet first. The final score was 5 – 0 to Wellesley.
