Presidential Perspective
Despite the threat of rain, the British Car Day came off without a hitch under clear skies
and beautiful weather. SDJC was well represented and proudly showed off our most
beautiful Jaguars.
There is only one day left to RSVP for the Election Luncheon at the beautiful Silver Gate
Yacht Club; see the flyer in this issue. We have a full final election slate now posted in
this issue. Remember you must be present to vote. The new Board will be announced
at the luncheon and in the December issue. Installation will be at the Holiday Gala at Tom Hamm’s
Lighthouse on 8 December. Again, this year Ali Proctor has planned a memorable evening. If you have
not done so already, mark your calendar for this event.
By the time you read this the SDJC contingent will be at the International Jaguar Festival in Santa Barbara.
Pete Rieth will lead our cadre of judges. Mark Hodges is the Concurs chair, Nedra Rummell and a host of
others will demonstrate SDJC support for this fun-filled event. Details of the activities and pictures will be
in the December issue
This has been a fun-filled active year, largely due to the outstanding efforts of those who have hosted or
sponsored events: Bob and Ali Proctor, Ray Waite, Dave Putnam, Pete Rieth, Nedra Rummell, Katherine
Partain, Mark Hodges, Dan and Jorgene Jensen, and Jim Hallameyer. We have already begun the planning
for next year’s events. If you have any suggestions or would like to chair an event for 2019, please contact
any of our board members, particularly Diane Bauman who has volunteered to be our activity coordinator.
Have a happy Thanksgiving. May your turkey be tender and juicy, your mashed potatoes be smooth and
creamy, and your green beans be fresh and tasty.
Cheers, George

The 39th Annual San Diego British Car Day was held on Saturday October 13th at Spanish Landing Park East. The British Car Club Council decided to use the Cancer Survivor Park area of Spanish Landing due to its size and beautiful displays. It turned out to be a very nice venue with plenty of space for all of the British Car Clubs. When registration was closed on October 7th there were 180 cars signed up to attend. Due to thunderstorms and rain the night before and a prediction of rain on Saturday, not everyone that registered attended. Still, there were over 150 cars in attendance and the rain never showed up. It was overcast most of the day with blue sky peeking through every once in a while. The theme this year was “The Tradition of British Racing and Rally Cars”. We had 12 Race cars and 3 Rally cars on display. Paul Konkle won First Place in the Racing Car Class with his 1962 MGB Modified Race Car. Dennis Santarinala took First Place in the Rally Car Class with his 1964 Mini Works car. There were 5 Jaguar Classes this year, JA1, through JA5. JA1 was for all years of XKE. There were 8 registered and 4 that attended. Greg Millard won 2nd Place with his 1961 XKE OTS. Patrick Harrington won 1st Place with his 1964 XKE Series 1. JA2 included XK120, XK140, and XK150. Michael Loper won 1st place with his 1955 XK140 Fixed Head Coupe. JA3 included XK8, XKR, and XJS. David Allen won 1st Place with his beautiful 1987 XJS. JA4 included the F-Type. 2 registered and 1 attended. No trophy was given as there has to be 4 cars in the class to award a trophy. Bruce Rosenblatt brought his 2014 F-Type Convertible. JA5 included all Sedans. David Allen was the only entry with his 2007 XJ8.
Cheers, Dave Putnam

IEJC Jagstravaganza & Concours d’Elegance – Part II
A note from your Editor. With IEJC’s Jagstravaganza coming right at September’s month-end, some of the pictures didn’t quite make the October issue. You can tell from the great smiles, this event is always a lot of fun and shouldn’t be missed. Cheers, Chuck

Editor’s note: Remember when going out of town to print out a copy
of the cover page of the most recent “Jaguar Tracks” and take it with
you. When you find a good setting just snap a picture of yourselves
holding up the cover page with a nice view of the scene behind you.

November 2018 By Pete Rieth, Chief Judge, San Diego Jaguar Club
This month’s article, unlike my usual columns, takes advantage of the interregnum between wind-down of the 2018 concours season and spin-up of the 2019 season to wander along other lanes.
Factoid from AUTOWEEK Magazine (8 OCT 2018): Every Goodyear racing tire contains an embedded, hidden sticker bearing the name of the technician who hand-applied its individual rubber ply layers. Each tire also contains a radio frequency identification chip in its sidewall which allows it to be tracked through its complete life cycle, including potential failure fault analysis. More detail on RFID technology for tire applications is available via Google, of course.
Other Lanes. Last year at this time, I recounted how a decrepit Mark IX enchanted me into the world of Jaguar cars. I was very remiss in a key point: My dear and patient wife Christa, who at the time was working as a Senior Officer at United Nations HQ in Manhattan, made the $4500 purchase price of the Mark IX a RETIREMENT PRESENT to me! Later: After a cat-less break of some years while we were often sojourning in other parts of the world, we were again living in Scripps Ranch. Near the local Vons market is an informal but thriving used car venue where I found myself snagged by a BRG 1986 Series 3 Vanden Plas. It turned out to be owned by a neighbor & friend who I later found to be adept at “innovative” repairs and styling on boats as well as his cars. Note the XJS wheels in the photo below, for example. Less obvious fixes included thumbtacks retaining the headliner over the rear window, wrong pinstripes, a manual under-dash AC switch and black door jambs defining the car’s original color. Never mind. It was a joy to drive for several years - even when I learned after a valve guide dropped that the cylinder head had earlier been poorly reworked and had to be completely replaced.
Notes from the Concours Judges Tent
Then, on a Friday in OCT 2004, having just installed a new set of Michelins on the VDP and while waiting at Jaguar Specialists for completion of routine service, I found myself admiring a ’99 XJR for sale out front. Still thinking I’d rather squeeze a few more miles out of the VDP, I was interrupted by Master Mechanic Tracy Hazelton who informed me the VDP would soon need “a few hundred $$” in leak repairs. By the time, I’d driven back across Pacific Beach to our current abode, where Christa was packing for an imminent UN assignment in Addis Ababa, my original plan had changed and when I told Christa, she said I was nuts and asked where I planned to get the cash. I said I’d figure it out and bless her heart she wrote me a check on a promise to pay her back soonest. And so it goes. And now 14 years later, with over 170K miles on it, a new engine and two major tranny rebuilds, the XJR is (finally) perking along just fine.

Getting to Know.... ….. what’s in Chuck & Kathy’s garage.
By Chuck Leuthen You may have noticed that this issue is a bit shorter than most. As your Editor, I thought I’d add some cheap filler as opposed
to a few “This Page Intentionally Left Blank.” pages. So, here’s a timeline of the past 50 plus years and the British cars that
occupied my garages and driveways. Maybe you had some of these as well. Let me know what’s been in your garages over
the years and I’ll run a feature article. Cheers, Chuck
It’s 2015 and I’m looking at one of my Facebook Jaguar sites. Hey, I think I know that Jag! Sure enough, it’s owned by a long-time friend and It’s for
sale!! I had even ridden in this 1993 Jaguar XJS Coupe almost 20 years earlier. Kathy and I took it for a spin and after a couple of weeks of negotiation it was ours. Probably one of the smoothest and quietest cars I’ve owned to date. Grace, Space (well almost) and Pace.

It’s now late ‘75. I’m with Burroughs Corporation and have accepted an overseas assignment at one of their design & engineering facilities in Scotland. Once again, I’m in need of
wheels and this 1968 Morris Minor 1000 Traveler fit the bill for the three years abroad.
It’s 2008. 30 years have passed since I last owned a British Classic and it’s time to go back. Kathy and I found this at VIP Classics in San Diego’s Gas Lamp district. One short ride in this
1976 Jaguar XJ6C and we knew we had to have it. Our 10 years with this beauty were both rewarding and challenging. It’s now moved on to other British Racing Green pastures.
It’s January 1967. I’m back home to Southern California after a tour of duty with the U S Navy. Home port Pearl Harbor with action throughout the Pacific from the Aleutian Islands, to the South Pacific and, of course,
Viet Nam. Needed wheels and this 1961 Triumph TR4 was the perfect answer. Lots of fun for about two years when I moved to American Muscle.
It’s now ’76 and I’m looking for something at the opposite end of the spectrum to complement the Traveler. What
better than a 1968 Daimler 250 Saloon? Sold it to a close friend before leaving Scotland. He drove it for a just a few weeks before the small 2500 cc Hemi engine blew and he sold it for more that he paid me! And yes, we’re still good friends.
2014 finds us in need of a new daily driver. I’m retired now and no longer need a “practical” car. Besides, Kathy has an SUV and we still had the XJ6C
if we need to seat more than two in a Jag. Our 2002 Jaguar XK8 makes the perfect choice for daily errands, golf (boot can easily hold two sets of clubs) and top down drives with our SDJC friends.

These are the people at the “wheel” of your club. They would be glad to help you get involved or respond to your’ inquires or suggestions. There are a lot of jobs to do to keep the club running smoothly. Of course, you are always welcome to come to a Board meeting.
Meeting was called to order at Jaguar San Diego at 6:55 p.m. by President George Klein. The following Board members were present: Nedra Rummell; Dave Allen; Ali Proctor; Dan Jensen; Mark Hodges, Webmaster; Mitch Cohen. Absent: Bob Proctor Al Steele; Tim

Representative and Diane Bauman.
Secretary’s Report: Minutes from the September meeting were approved electronically.
Treasurer’s Report: Dave – September month activities include income of
$1,320.21. Expenses for the month were $1,808.30. Overall, we had net expense of
$488.09 for the month, with a net loss of $310.28 for the year. Compared to last year
our P&L looks low (we had net income of $6,103.02 at the end of September 2017). Net
differences are a due to lower income of ~$1,800 and higher expenses of ~$4,500. Main
contributors are a reduction in advertising revenue of ~$1,600. Increase in expenses
~$2,600 for dinners, $1,100 for Holiday party deposits, ~$600 for AGM expenses and
~$500 for Website hosting. Overall our accounts remain healthy and reflect our strategic
intent to reduce the relatively large cash balance in a gradual and controlled manner
while improving quality of events for our members. Dave proposed a motion that George
sign drafted note to Jaguar Land Rover expressing thanks for the sponsorship check of
$535.71 for the SDJC 2018 Concours d’Elegance and send to JLR prior to October 15th,
