    October 2010

On July 21, 2007 author J.K. Rowling and her publishers released the last of herrecord-breaking novels featuring the young wizard Harry Potter. Harry Potterand the Deathly Hallows sold 15 million copies in the first twenty-four hoursfollowing its release.

Three days earlier, a group of middle-school visitors to the History of MedicineDivision at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, MD were shown anearly 17th century treatise with an intriguing connection to J.K. Rowling and hertales. The visitors were fascinated and wanted to know more, so the staff of theHistory of Medicine Division began combing the collection in search of otherhistorical materials that are conceptually linked to the fictional world created inRowlings stories. This labor eventually produced a lecture series, two Web

exhibits, and a traveling exhibit that has been coordinated by the AmericanLibrary Association.

Harry Potters World: Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine, produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes ofHealth, Bethesda, Maryland and coordinated by the AmericanLibrary Association, will open in the Briscoe Library on October 11.

    C. A new exhibit mounted in the lecture hall foyer was created by Pennie Borchers, Special Collections Librarian,

as a companion piece to the NLM traveling exhibit, Harry Potters World. The themes are similar alchemy,

medicine, herbology and monsters - but the local display highlights materials found in the P.I. Nixon Medical

Historical Library. There are images from Vesalius anatomical atlas, Pars book on teratology, Bartischs

classic work on ophthalmology, Drers canon of proportions, and many more. The exhibit will remain on

    display through early November.

Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine: Local exhibit showcases

the resources of the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library

    Like Harrys professors, many

Renaissance thinkers valued the study of

the natural world. For example, both the

naturalist Konrad Gesner and the surgeon

Ambroise Parargued that knowing moreabout the living things around them would

help them to better understand the waythe world worked. Their publications

often catalogued the traits and medicinal

value of odd creatures, including some

featured hundreds of years later in Harry

    Potter.

Instead of roots, a small, muddy, and extremelyugly baby popped out of the earth. The leaves were

    Living Dangerously:

    Doctors Adrift in theDarkAges

In the Middle Ages, there were a few good doctors and lots of

bad ones, operating in a context of ignorance. The practice of

medicine was very dangerous for patients---and even for

doctors-- who met various unpleasant ends when their

medicine failed, as it often did.

The staff of The Libraries wish Gary Goodson, Outreach Library Assistant in theBriscoe Library, all the best as he and his wife Robin prepare to move to Atlanta.Garys last day in the library was Thursday, September 23.

Gary has made many significant contributions to the librarys outreach programs.

Thanks to his efforts, the Circuit Librarian Health Information Network (CLHIN)website has been revamped, and we now have online evaluation instruments forour outreach activities. Gary has also prepared monthly newsletters for all CLHINparticipants. He represented The Libraries at several health fairs, and provided

valuable program support at the evidence-based practice summer institute inJuly. He has also done a masterful job coordinating the renewal of our contracts

    with CLHIN institutions.

Once settled in Atlanta, Gary will continue his online studies in the Masters ofLibrary Science program at the University of North Texas, while his wifecompletes a fellowship in public health at the Centers for Disease Control. We

    wish them all the best!

Dr. Adelita Cantu of the UT Health Science Center School of Nursing and colleagues from UTSA, the TexasDiabetes Institute, and The Libraries recently received funding from the Institute for Integration of Medicineand Science for a one-year pilot project on diabetes education. The purpose of the partnership is to learn moreabout how Mexican Americans with diabetes or at risk for diabetes use health information to make dailydecisions about self care.

Investigators hope to determine whether participation inSalsa Caliente, a specially tailored curriculum, andenhanced education about accessing health information on the Internet will make a difference in diabetesawareness, management, and knowledge versus participation inSalsa Caliente alone.

Half of the participants in this project will receive a laptop computer to use at home and will be trained to use

MedlinePlus, Healthy Texas and other reliable Internet sites. The other half of the participants will receivegeneral education and will not have immediate access to a computer. The project will end on April 30, 2011.
