Tidy Towns Congratulations to the Coachford Tidy Towns committee who achieved their highest number of points in the national competition. 2014 was the groups third year of entering the completion and were awarded 201 points from a total of 450. The judges had huge praise for the hard work that the committee have carried out over the last 12 months and praised a lot of the business’s for their efforts “Well presented premises included Casey’s Funeral home, Physical Therapy Clinic, Centra, Breathnach’s bar and Cooney’s service station. Well done to businesses going the extra step with flower displays such as Kathleen’s Gro- cers, the Gala shop and Style’s Hair Salon. The fresh blue colours and flower displays were ad- mired at the Village Inn. We liked the quirky ‘Mags Take Away’. Residences along the street were freshly painted and colourful. Some were enhanced with window boxes or tubs. We ad- mired the cottage beside the church with its col- ourful garden”. Commenting on the results, Coachford Tidy Towns Chairperson, Martha McCaffery said “ We are delighted that once more we have increased our score. We have been working very hard this year and have carried out a huge amount of work in the area. This judging was conducted before the World Fishing champi- onships and unfortunately came too early to wit- ness the wonderful work that was carried out by so many in the village at that time. We still have many issues to tackle if we are to come anyway close in achieving our goal of being in the top half of the villages in County Cork. We have a lot of eyesores and the recycling centre near the GAA grounds is losing us a lot of marks as are the dere- lict sites in the village. But there are also positives. The new Coachford Greenway is a great addi- tion to the area and it and the church and its grounds came in for some well deserved praise from the judges. The committee have already begun to address some of the issues raised by the Tidy Towns judgment and will continue with our overall plan over the next few years.” Cake Sale and Coffee Morning A coffee morning and cake sale will take place on Sunday 21st of September from 10:30 to 12 in Coachford GAA Hall in aid of the STREET CHILDREN OF CALCUTTA. All baking and do- nations would be greatly appreci- ated. Baking can be dropped into the hall anytime from 9.30am. All proceeds will be going directly to the children and their families helping them in areas of educa- tion, healthcare, accommodation, nutrition, training and counselling. Please support this cause. Famine Commemoration a huge Success

The recent famine commemoration organised by the ACR Heritage commit-tee in association with Coachford Players was very well received by all those in attendance. The evening began with the unveiling of the Magourney Fam-ine memorial at the old Graveyard by local historian Anthony Greene. This was followed by a performance of the famine based play, ‘The Black Man’ by Coachford Players in Coachford national School. The play starring Anne Kiely, Joe Scanlon, Emily O’Connell, John McCaffery, Tomas Healy and Hannah McCaffery was a superb piece of drama and very thought provok-ing. It was excellently directed by Eugene O’Sullivan and written by An-

thony Greene.

The evening concluded with a very informative talk and slideshow presenta-tion on ‘Magourney and the Great Famine by Doug Lucey This presentation brought the tragic events of the 1840s to life and showed on the Great Fam-ine impacted on the people and landscape of Coachford and the surrounding area.

The Coachford Play-ers have never been busier. The Group is currently preparing for three produc-tions. First up is the festival play, Faint Voices, The life and love of Francis Ledwidge. The group will travel to Kil-mallock, Rossmore, Cork, Haulbowline, and Shannon during October and No-vember to perform the play in the one act festival circut and to hopefully get a couple of wins and qualify for the All Ireland Finals in November. The group are also in rehearsals for two one act comedies which will be per-formed locally in November by some of the group who are not taking part in the festival play. Music from the Musicals

October 25th & 26th will see the music from the musicals come to Coachford. This night of music promises to be one of the best shows ever to grace the stage in the hall and it’s a performance that no one should miss. A large group of singers form all over Coachford and beyond are busy learning songs, practis-ing harmonies and brushing up on moves to in order to entertain everyone over the October Bank Holiday week-end. Community Council Work is to begin on the new footpath from Fr.Patrick’s Sheehan Place to the National School in October and com-pletion works will be carried out on the footpath near Mags Chipper and O’Cal-laghans Bar at the same time.. Cork County Council responsibility for the Coachford area has moved from Macroom to Blarney. This new arrange-ment will be more challenging for us as the Blarney’s office record of interest in Coachford’s affairs has been fairly dis-mal in the past.

€8,500 raised for charity from Festival The organisers of the fifth Coachford Autumn Festival would like to thank all those who supported the festival this year. We believe it was our best festival so far. We would like to thank those who attended the events on Friday, Satur-day and Sunday. We hope that families went home happy from the Festival on Sunday, that the runners and walkers were happy with the run on Friday evening and that those who attended the dog show, Junior Agrilym-pics, Grass racing and the Voice of the Festival competition were glad they did so. We will continue to try and improve the festival and continue to make it something the whole community can be proud of. To run a festival over three days takes a huge amount of help and involvement from a lot of people. We would like to thank all those who took part in the various events; the runners and walkers, the high Nelly cyclists, Agri -Olympians, singers, musicians, dunk tank swim-mers, babies, mummies and grannies, vintage vehicle owners, model toy dis-play builders , dog owners, egg throwers, Sheep racers and children. We would of course like to especially thank those who helped as stewards, ticket sellers, caterers, those who registered the runners, fed the runners, sponsored the festival, sponsored the singers, provided equipment to us, and supported us in any other way. The festival is a huge community effort and only the sup-port of so many in the community makes it possible. We would like to thank Aghabullogue GAA for their co operation, Coachford Cycling Club and the ACR Heritage group for their support and Padraig & Cormac O'Donoghue and Dairygold for the use of their properties. We would also like to thank the residents of the village and surrounding areas for their patience and under-standing for any disruption that the festival may have caused. The 2014 Festi-val raised €8,500 for charity. Suicide Aware are the main beneficiaries and will receive €3,000 while Macroom Hospital, Sullane Haven Macroom and Coach-ford St. Vincent De Paul will get €1,000 each. The club will also donate €1,500 to Coachford Tidy Towns,€500 to the Christmas Lights appeal and €500 worth of equipment to Coachford Foróige. Chairman of Broomhill Vintage Club, Tadgh Murphy said “ We are delighted to be able to donate so much money again this year to these very worthy causes. We had a very suc-cessful festival and we were very fortunate that so many sponsors from the area supported the event. We would not be able to hold this festival and raise this money without their generous sponsorship. This was our fifth festival and over the years we have been able to raise over €30,000 for charity. The festival continues to grow and over 1,000 people (exhibitors and visitors) en-joyed the show on Sunday. To run a festival like ours over three days means a huge amount of work for a small group of people and we would be delighted to welcome new members”. The donation of cheques takes place on Saturday September 27th in O’Riordan’s Bar Coachford at 9.30pm and everyone is welcome. We are looking forward to 2015 already and ideas and suggestions on how to improve the festival are always welcome.

Mixed fortunes for Minors

Well done to the Aghabullogue Minor Footballers who captured the Rebel óg East Minor B Football Championship title by defeating Carrig Na bhFear on a score line of 2.14 to 1.06. The Aghabullogue boys kicked some beautiful scores in the first thirty minutes and played some fine football in the second half to keep Carrig Na bhFear at bay. There were some good performances right throughout the team with Paul Ring,,Sean Dineen, Greg Long, Niall Barry Murphy, Matthew Bradley and Billy Casey catching the eye all evening. Luke O'Connor had a terri-fic performance in goals and pulling off some fine saves to keep Aghabullogue's comfortable lead intact. This was a wonderful performance by a very young team and if tonight's performance is anything to go by we can expect many more nights like this in years to come. Congratulations to the teams coaches and se-lectors, Danny Buckley, Willie O'Mahony, Eugene O'Sullivan and Jimmy Thomp-son. Aghabullogue Abú Hard luck to the aghabullogue minor hurlers who played a superb game of hurl-ing but came up short in the final few minutes of their Premier 2 final against Carbery. .the score line will show the Aghabullogue boys were defeated by 10 points but for those lucky enough to be in Pairc Ui Rinn witnessed a team who played their hearts out and were very unlucky to be beaten at all. the final score,4.17 to 1.16. Disappointment for the boys but they can be extremely proud of the way they played. Aghabullogue Abú.

Aghabullogue capture The Mid Cork Under 21 Hurling Championship ti-tle. Aghabullogue 2.18 Blarney 0.12 What a performance by the Aghabul-logue under 21 hurlers. They were los-ing by three points at half time and won by 12 points 30 minutes later. The boys were given very little hope going into this game but that didn't deter the huge crowd of Aghabullogue Support-ers in turning up at Cloughduv to cheer the lads on earlier this month Blarney were overwhelming favourites and were going for their 4th title in a row. At half time Aghabullogue were losing 1.05 to 11 points. However the Agh-abullogue supporters were hopeful that the breeze might help the lads and three points wasn't much of a lead to claw back. Second Half started and wow what a half! Aghabullogue tore into Blarney, didn't give them an inch and put three points over the bar in as many minutes. The sides were level and Aghabullogue were all over them, playing some ferocious hurling and throwing points over at will. . When the final whistle blew Blarney couldn't be-lieve that they were held to one point in the second half but Aghabullogue put in a performance that gave them the victory they deserved and scored a massive 1.13 in the second half. Well done to all 22 of them and to their trainers, Joe Foley, Eddie Twomey, John Hogan, Colm O'Connell and Declan Kiely and to the team assistant, Anthony Riordan. Aghabullogue Abú Kick Boxing heroes Congratulations to Emma Flanagan and her brother James who won seven medals between them at the recent World Kick Boxing Championships in London. Emma came home with three silver and two bronze while James col-lected two bronze medals Camogie Well done to the Aghabullogue under 14 camogie players who have reached the County League Final by defeating Blarney in the semi final.
