Parish Business Association formed. The Coachford, Agh-abullogue Rylane Busi-ness Association (CARBA) was formed last week at a very well attended meeting in Coachford. The organisation hope to operate as a lobby group to im-prove the infrastructure of the parish and to enhance the opportunities for doing business in the area. CARBA also plan to produce a business directory for the parish and to publish a Business Board where all the business in the area will be available to view at a glance. The businesses present discussed the challenges facing all of them at this time and appeals were made to locals to support their local shops, pubs and businesses so that they in turn can sup-port the local voluntary groups and charities when they come looking for their support. “If local shops close then customers and the community will suffer. Revenue spent in local businesses goes back into the local economy, enriching the whole community and builds a stronger local economy.” The next meeting of the Association is planned for March 23rd . If you would like to submit your business’s name for inclusion in the directory or require fur-ther information contact Mary Cronin on 087 2411161. Con Murphy and family feature on RTE show Con Murphy, Direen appeared along with his wife

Mary and son Donnacha on this week’s edition of the RTE show , ‘Ear to the

Ground’ . Con spoke openly about his battle with depression and the effect it had on his life and the lives of those around him. Con was very willing to speak on the illness in order that those who may be going through similar battles would be aware that there is light at the end of the, at times, very dark tunnel. The programme is available on the RTE Player for the next two weeks http://www.rte.ie/player/ie/show/10374614/.

Coachford Tidy Towns The Coachford Tidy Towns Committee were presented with the findings of a report commissioned by West Cork Development Partnership and carried out in October by two people who adjudicate on the national competition each year. The Judges while mostly impressed with the work of the Tidy Towns had some issues with public spaces in the village, derelict sites, poor signage and the contin-ued littering at the recycling bins. Chairperson of the Tidy Towns Committee, Martha McCaffery said, “we were delighted to receive the findings of the report and have since worked with the County Council to improve the situation at the recycling bins and to replace the misleading and poor signage at Lynch’s corner. We are hoping to purchase some extra litter bins for the village this year and to install some additional flower beds on the approach roads .We have a few more projects in the pipe-line for this year we are working on implementing the recommendations of the report in order to make the village look better. We are very fortunate that the Gateway Scheme worker employed through the Cork County Council is having a huge impact on keeping the village so clean and tidy .”

Raised Voices

The Coachford Church Choir are looking for new members to join the tradi-tional Choir. New mem-bers are vital to keep the choir rejuvenated and to offer new voices to those attending mass each Sun-day. “If some more people don’t join the choir soon you won’t hear them at all ” said organist, Laura Di-neen. The Coachford Church Choir doesn’t ask for full time commitment and there are no fees to join! There are plenty of spaces available and you will be welcomed with open arms.

Coachford National School’s Aladdin The fourth Fifth and Sixth children of Coachford National School put on a truly wonderful show last week when they took to the stage to perform the musical Aladdin. This was a superb produc-tion, full of amazing costumes, acting, songs and fun right throughout the show. The children were terrific and it was obvious for the large audience present that they had put a tremendous amount of work into preparing the show for their parents, relatives, friends and the general public. School Principal, Sharon O’Driscoll thanked all the parents who pulled out all the stops so that the children were properly dressed and prepared. She also thanked the teachers especially, Miss Flaherty, Mr. Horan and Miss Whelton who put in a huge ef-fort to help the children prepare for this fantastic show.

Donation to Marymount

The Aghinagh Comhaltas and the Coachford Atelier Art Group presented a cheque to Ann O’Ma-hony of Marymount Hospice Char-

ity last weekend at a very enjoyable function in Breathnach’s Bar. The

two groups raised €2,500 from the sale of their very beautiful 2015 art calendar. Each month featured an

original piece of art and the calendar was sold in local shops and markets in the area as well as in the Mary-mount charity shop. Following the

presentation Aghinagh Comhaltas

entertained those present with some wonderful music and singing.

Coachford Foróige

Lots of activity going on in the Foróige Club since the New Year. All the members thoroughly enjoyed the brownies made on club night at the end of January. Thanks to Flora, our very own Gordon Ramsay for being the head chef!!

There was a McAfee Online Safety presentation at Foróige on 4th Feb, telling us all about the

dangers of Cyberbullying and how to keep safe while online. We are also in the middle of a Table Tennis Tournament and a Draughts Tournament in the club each week. Jack Oldham is a hot favourite for the Table Tennis while the Draughts is still

wide open.. Last week we took part in a team building exercise where each team had to build a

free standing tower with just paper and cello tape. Not as easy as you think! We also had a Val-entine’s Day Poetry competition.. Two weeks ago Broomhill Vintage Club came and presented us with funds from the Coachford Autumn Festival which is being used by our club to

buy materials including

hoodies with the club logo. Thanks Broomhill. We have a Foróige District Disco in Riv-

erstick coming up at the end

of the month and we are busy organising our Coffee morn-ing for Sunday and a club out-

ing at Easter.

Coachford Celebrates Gold Medal The Village was buzzing recently with the exciting news that local resi-dent, Olive Loughnane’s silver medal triumph in Race Walking in Berlin in 2009 is to be upgraded to Gold fol-lowing the disqualification of the Russian Athlete, Olga Kaniskina . Coachford celebrated Olives fine per-formance in 2009 with a welcome home party for the athlete. A statue in honour of Olive was erected in the village. in 2012 to mark her involve-ment in the London Olympics John Hogan, member of the Community Council and organiser of the 2009 welcoming Home event said “ We are all thrilled for Olive and her husband Martin and family on this excellent turn of events. Olive was always special to us here in Coachford and we are all immensely proud of all her achievements. We have all wit-nessed Olive putting in hour after hour of intensive training on the roads around the village when she was preparing for the world, European and Olympic Games and we now feel that this Gold Medal win is the least she deserves. Olive is a fantastic Community person and is al-ways on hand to speak to Children and adults about staying fit and healthy and preparing for the big sporting events in their lives. She is a member of the organising Committee for the Coachford 5 mile Road race every August, She is an officer on the School’s Parent’s Associa-tion and is taking part in and supporting the Operation Transformation walks in the village at the moment. Olive has always been Gold to us here in Coachford. We may now have to erect another Statue for our World Champion.”

All Ireland Final The Aghabullogue GAA quiz team will contest the Scor na nOg All Ireland Final this weekend in Dublin. The team of Tom Long, Aodán Healy, Paul Ring and Niall Barry Murphy will travel to the City West Hotel to com-pete against the Connaught, Leinster and Ulster Champi-ons on Saturday.

Soccer The Cork AUL season is beginning to get very interesting and three local teams are all in the top half of their respective leagues and could be in the final shake up as the they near their completion. The Coachford Premier team lie in third position in the Premier league with 11 games left and are starting to show a bit of form in recent weeks. Last weekend they came from 2 goals down to come back to beat Grattan United 3-2. The Coachford B team are on top of their league having all their games played and now must await other results in League 3B to see if they will be crowned champions. Rylane Celtic top league one by a single point and have six games left to play. We wish all three teams the very best of luck
