Korea ranks top in credit card use Korea is ranked top among major countries in terms of the frequency of credit card use, data showed. In the latest data compiled by the Korea Financial Telecommunications and Clearing Institute (KFTC), local consumers on average made 147 purchases with credit card in 2012, the highest among 18 of the Committee on Payment and Settlement Systems (CPSS) member countries. Canada was positioned second with an average of 89.8, followed by the United States with 83.5. The KFTC said it conducted research on CPSS member countries, including China, Japan, India, Singapore, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Brazil, to predict how the future of electronic payments will develop. The video posted on YouTube shows an officer striking the dog in the stomach. He also appears to lift the dog by the leash onto its hind legs. The dog is hit again, then lifted into the air and swung around. The police department put the officer on administrative leave pending an investigation. Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott released a statement reading, “Anybody who loves dogs as much as I do is always saddened and shocked anytime you hear of a dog’s abuse. A Floating Village threatens to disappear

The village of Makoko in Nigeria is sometimes called “The Venice of Africa.” It floats on a lagoon in the

center of Lagos. But unlike Venice, houses in Makoko are built on sticks. Canoes are the main kind of

transportation. The government is fighting in court to tear down the village, which some call a slum. But the

community is fighting back. Steve Ember has Heather Murdock’s report from Makoko.

Makoko is believed to be more than 100 years old. The wooden houses look like they are about to fall down.

To make money, people sell fish under the bridges of Lagos’ busy roads. Hundreds of local children do not

go to school. Those who do cannot fit into the village’s one schoolhouse, which is slowly sinking into the

water.

David Shemede is chairman of the local Community Development Association. He says the government

calls Makoko an illegal shantytown, or slum. Officials have been seeking to tear it down, he says.

Emmanuel Shemede is David Shemede’s brother. He is also Makoko’s traditional chief. Emmanuel

Shemede says last year the government told villagers they must leave in 72 hours. But villagers refused to

go. One person was killed in the clashes. Now, village residents and city planners are fighting about

Makoko in court.

Emmanuel Shemede says he wants the government to help fix the village’s old buildings and connect it to

the city’s water and electricity. But if that is not going to happen, Emmanuel Shemede says, he wants the

government to leave the community alone. He does not want anyone to destroy their homes.

Crocodile Attacks Increase

Of all animals that live both on land and in water, the crocodile is among the most threatening to human

beings. And in northern Australia, attacks have increased greatly since crocodile hunting was banned in the

1970s.

Today, wildlife officials in Australia’s Northern Territory are working to protect humans from the animals.

Their efforts began after several deadly attacks in recent years. The new “Crocwise” campaign even

involves school children. The message being presented to students is clear: One of nature’s most effective

killers lives among them.

Rachel Pearce works with the Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory. She recently met

with school children in the city of Darwin. Ranger Pearce spoke about the dangers of the world’s biggest

reptile. She showed them the remains of a crocodile’s head.

One little girl definitely understood Ms. Pearce’s message. She said you must not swim near crocs.

“They are dangerous and they might bite you.”

Rachel Pearce said that as the numbers of crocodiles increase, so do threats to humans. She said

crocodiles get on land near housing – and sometimes find their way inside people’s homes.

Television advertising warns of the dangers as northern Australians learn to live with crocodiles.

In northern Australia, about one person dies from a crocodile attack every year. Most victims are not

foreigner tourists who disobey warnings. Instead, they are Australians. Many people have grown up

swimming in a local waterway or creek. But the spread of the crocodile has made those places too

dangerous for humans to enter.

늘어나는 악어의 공격

악어는 땅 위와 물 속 모두에서 사는 동물들 중 인간에게 가장 위협적이다. 그리고 1970 년대 악어

사냥이 금지된 이래로 호주 북부 지역에서는 인간에 대한 공격이 큰 폭으로 증가해 왔다.

현재 호주 노던준주(Northern Territory; 북부 자치구) 야생 동물 담당 관료들은 동물로부터 인간을

보호하는 일을 하고 있다. 이같은 노력은 최근 몇 년간 발생한 몇몇 치명적인 공격 이후에 시작되었다.

새로 시작된 “크록와이즈(Crocwise)” 캠페인은 심지어 학생들도 대상으로 진행된다. 학생들에게
