Moylan gets the message across but at what cost?
Jonathan Moylan has to wait a bit longer to find out how harshly the courts will judge his hoax email on ANZ letterhead. Moylan was expected to be sentenced last Friday for constructed an email in January 2013 using the ANZ logo to falsely announce the bank would not be proceeding with a $1.2 billion loan to Whitehaven Coal for the Maules Creek mine project for ethical and moral reasons. The sentencing has now been adjourned to a date to be fixed.
The false information Moylan sent out saw Whitehaven’s share price drop significantly prior to the hoax being uncovered.
Yes, it was only a email and no one was physi-cally harmed by the prank, but a message had to be sent that this cannot be tolerated despite how strongly you feel about an issue.
You could do quite a deal of damage by send-ing out false claims on a company’s letterhead. Banks cop a lot of criticism from various angles over their policies and decisions, much of it deserved, but no company deserves to have their reputation harmed by whoever feels like it.
Mr Moylan has garnered plenty of support for his stance, with a website (www.standwithjono.org) set up in his honour. It states: ‘Jonathan Moylan’s action opened up an important conversation in Australia. Jonathan’s action drew attention to the threat that the ANZ-funded Maules Creek coal project poses to farms, forest, community and water in north west NSW.’
It certainly has drawn attention to the issue, so the objective has been achieved.
But he was 25 years of age at the time of send-ing the email, so he certainly knew what he was
doing and that he would be getting into quite serious trouble over his actions.
I attended last week’s press conference at which Wayne Bennett announced he would be stepping down as Knights coach at the end of the season.
As many of you would have seen on TV high-lights and read in the papers, he was quite open and honest about the reasons for his impending departure.
He was twice given the chance by reporters during questioning to use the multitude of issues that have disrupted the season as an excuse for the disappointing results this season.
To his credit, he quickly shot down any sugges-tion of that and took full responsibility.
The easy way for him would have been to blame the Alex McKinnon injury, the Russell Packer jailing and the ongoing club ownership discus-sions and write the season off under one of those reasons.
But he chose to step away now and give some-one else the chance to build on the improvements he has made to the whole club.
Sunday’s come-from-behind victory over Cronulla showed there is still plenty of spirit in the club.
Trailing 18-0 in the first half, the Knights appeared flat and you thought perhaps Bennett’s decision had been playing in their minds.
This Sunday is the RiseForAlex round match against the Gold Coast Titans at Hunter Stadium.
Jessica Mauboy will be performing a post-match concert amongst a range of activities on the day.

N ewcastle could be short-changed to the tune of nearly $47.5 million on the controver-sial T4 coal loader at Kooragang
Island. It was revealed last week that the Depart-
ment of Planning had recommended the developer, Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS), pay just $528,140 in developer levies for its $4.8 billion project, about 90 times less than the one per cent fee devel-opers would normally be required to pay.
If it goes ahead, the move would see Newcastle City Council miss out on $47.47 million in compensation.
Voices from all sides of politics have raised their concerns about the recom-mendation, with Greens councillor, Michael Osborne last week claiming it showed the State Government did not have the interests of the community at heart.
“This recommendation wouldn’t give anyone in the community confidence that the Department of Planning will do the right thing by the community, rather what is in the interest of the private profits,” he said.
He said a new coal-loader would have adverse social, health, economic and
environmental impacts on the city and the local community needed to be fully compensated for these effects.
“The proponent is a company owned by multinationals who make record profits from exports shipped through the Port of Newcastle,” he said.
“They need to fully compensate the community of Newcastle for the impact they are having on local residents.”
Shadow Minister for the Hunter, Sonia Hornery questioned why “big business” should receive a $47.5 million discount when ordinary rate payers are required to pay Council a one per cent fee on develop-ments.
When quizzed about the equity of the recommendation during a visit to Mait-land last Wednesday, NSW Premier, Mike Baird encouraged concerned parties to make submissions to the Planning Assess-ment Commission and urged PWCS to listen to the community’s concerns.
“I also think there’s an opportunity for Port Waratah to listen to the concerns that were raised and they’ve got an opportu-nity to voluntarily contribute to the debate and indeed make a higher contribution.”
Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen said he was “quite surprised” by the depart-ment’s recommendation and intended to make a submission to the Planning Assessment Commission.

Mr Osborne said he had never heard of a case where a proponent paid above the

“Why would they go over,” he asked.“It’s quite clear Newcastle will miss out
from this arrangement when we should really be getting the full amount.”
The Planning Assessment Commission will hold a public hearing on the project in Newcastle on August 26.

O ne hundred fewer employees will show up for work at the Forgacs shipyards at Tomago and Carrington this week, a
reality Shadow Assistant Minister for Defence, David Feeney has called an “avoidable tragedy.”
His comments follow last month’s call for voluntary redundancies across the shipbuilder’s Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) program, which is due for completion in September 2015.
Mr Feeney said it was likely more Forgacs employees would lose their jobs over the next two years.
“You will be aware, of course, that in recent days the Abbott Government announced that two navy logistics ships will be built overseas,” he said.
“I think the industry is being very frank with us in saying if they don’t have more work in the next two years, and poten-tially even sooner than that, hundreds of jobs are going to disappear.”
Forgacs CEO, Lindsay Stratton said the ramp down should not have come as a surprise to employees.

T raffic congestion remains the major issue of a planned housing development in Whitebridge, after a community meeting last week
saw more than 120 residents presented with revised plans for the Dudley Road site.
Developers SNL organised the public information session in Charlestown last Wednesday evening to provide details of design changes brought about by commu-nity concern and Lake Macquarie City Council’s request for alterations.
Access to the site will be from Kopa Street only, with residents worried about the impact the extra traffic would have on the suburban street.
SNL town planner, Wade Morris said the company had engaged the services of architect, Peter Smith from Smith & Tzannes to work through the various issues.
Mr Smith said an additional entry point on Dudley Road was not considered an option for the project.
“It would just become a rat race during peak times if cars could travel directly through the site,” Mr Smith said.
The major changes include the site no longer being a gated community, with
public pedestrian access available through from Dudley Road to Kopa Street.
Additional park space has been provided in the middle of the site with the majority of parking now located underground.
However, residents at the meeting expressed their dismay at confirmation the project would still contain close to 87 dwell-ings as per the original plans.
Whitebridge Community Alliance spokes-person, Sean Brown told the Post that while there were improvements to the updated plans, the community remained very concerned about the density of the project.
“Although SNL stated that they did not know the exact number of dwellings in the new plans, they did say it would be approxi-mately the same and they would not budge on this,” Mr Brown said.
“The community is still concerned about the adverse impacts of this on traffic flows, congestion and parking, as these were some of the major issues raised regarding the previous plans.” Mr Brown highlighted Council’s response in January to a SNL Social Impact Assessment.
“Council staff have reported on the adverse impacts of a high density develop-ment in a predominantly low density area and suggest the most effective method for addressing these impacts are to scale back the development,” he said.

N SW Premier, Mike Baird has refused to commit to a construction start-date for the new Lower Hunter Hospital, but
says it will be delivered within five years.Mr Baird visited the Metford site of
the hospital with Member for Maitland, Robyn Parker and Hunter New England Health chief executive, Michael DiRienzo last week, but could not reveal any details about the hospital, only saying that the final plan was still in progress.
“[We expect construction to begin] as soon as possible,” Mr Baird said.
“We are close to being able to announce the model, the size, the clinical services, the funding and they will come in due course.
“We need to finalise that work and then we’ll announce it.”
Mr Baird said the Government was open to some private funding for the hospital, but Ms Parker provided assurances that public patients would be treated there.
“This will be a public hospital,” Ms Parker said.
“Public patients will be treated in the same way as they would at the Mater, at the John Hunter, and that’s our plan.
“We’re building something in between the size of the Mater and the John Hunter, so what is going to be built on the site and the planning is the most important thing.”
While short on details, Mr Baird empha-sised that the Coalition had committed to a site and found the dollars, something the former Labor Government had not.
“I’d say to the Opposition, they have absolutely no credibility on the subject of this hospital,” he said.
“They never promised, they never delivered it, not a dollar towards.
“They have no right to contribute to this debate.”
Mr DiRienzo said that the master plan for the site would be completed by the end of the year, and added that it would include the possibility of both a public and a private hospital on the site, as well as telehealth capabilities.
“I think all those options are possible,” Mr DiRienzo said.
“[Telehealth] means we don’t have to move communities to come to these locations,” he said.
“It’s important we get on with the busi-ness of working out what we actually need here so we will have the master planning completed by the end of this calendar year and we will move forward.

Premier, Mike Baird has come to the defence of his Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian, backing the decision to cut the heavy rail line into Newcastle on Boxing Day.
The move drew the ire of the Opposition and unions when it was announced earlier this month, with the Greens transport spokesperson, Mehreen Faruqi, accusing
the Government of timing the truncation of the line at Wickham with the holidays to avoid a public outcry.
“The people of the Hunter will have their vital rail service shut down while many are away or otherwise off work,” she said.
“It’s clear that the Government times these events around the holiday season so
there is minimal public outcry and media exposure of the change.”
Mr Baird said rather than being an attempt to avoid media and commuter scrutiny over the holiday period, the Christmas break provided a window to get work underway with minimal disruption for passengers.
“Obviously over a holiday period it makes sense to compress [the work] as much as possible in terms of the disruption,” Mr Baird told the Post last Wednesday.
“It’s clear we’re doing everything possible to do it as quickly as possible, but I mean, we do need to do the work and that’s some-thing we make no apologies for.”

Pedestrian injured at KurriPolice are appealing for information after a
man was seriously injured in a crash where a pedestrian was struck at Kurri Kurri last week.
About 9.30pm on Tuesday, July 8, a 71-year-old man was struck by a car as he walked east on Coronation Street.
Police believe the driver of a Ford Falcon sedan struck the pedestrian on the southern side of the street injuring the man’s left leg.
The driver stopped the vehicle and he and two passengers assisted the seriously injured man.
An ambulance arrived a short time later and paramedics treated the man at the scene before conveying him to John Hunter Hospital to undergo surgery.
The two passengers remained at the scene of the crash whilst the driver left the area.
About 8.20am the following day, a 46-year-old Hamilton man attended Newcastle Police Station.
The man, who was the driver of the Ford, was released pending further inquiries.
Police have urged anyone that witnessed the crash and not yet spoken to investigators to come forward by either calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or using the Crime Stoppers online reporting page at www1.police.nsw.gov.au.
Woman indecently assaultedInquiries have begun after a woman was
indecently assaulted in Newcastle last week.The 19-year-old woman told police she
became separated from her friends while walking along Hunter Street about 10.30pm on Monday, July 7.
She said three men then approached her and one indecently assaulted her before her friends returned and the men left.
The woman reported the incident to Waratah Police the following day and an investigation was initiated.
Police are now appealing for anyone who may have been in vicinity of Hunter and Steel Streets, Newcastle at the time and saw the incident to contact police.
Police seek armed robberPolice are appealing for information
following a spate of armed robberies in the Lake Macquarie area over the last month.
Between Monday, June 30 and Tuesday July 8, a man armed with a large knife held up petrol stations and newsagencies in Belmont, Cardiff, Freemans Waterhole and Rathmines.
During the incidents the man threatened staff with a knife and stole cash and cigarettes before running from the scene.
Detectives are continuing investigations and believe the robberies are linked.
They are looking for a man who has been described as being of Caucasian appear-ance, aged in his 20s, about 180cm tall with a thin build and blonde hair.
During the incidents the man has been described as wearing dark clothing, a balaclava and gloves.

W ith works about to get underway on the site of the University of Newcastle’s new city campus in Hunter
Street, members of the Awabakal Land Council gathered on the land last week to conduct a traditional smoking ceremony.
Peter Townshend, who conducted the ceremony, said the practice was particularly significant to the people of the Awabakal nation.
“It’s smoking out the bad energies that may have been here and bringing that new level of good energy, positivity and cleans-ing to the area in general,” he said.
“That’s what the smoke means to our people.”
Professor Andrew Parfitt, deputy vice-chancellor (academic) at the University of Newcastle, said it was important that the university seek the involvement of members of the local Aboriginal community.
“The University of Newcastle has the largest number of indigenous students of any university in Australia,” he said.
“Because we are about to start work on the site, to do some of the mine rectifica-tion work, really what we wanted to do was to work with our Aboriginal colleagues to recognise the occasion, the start of work in the area.
“But also, to properly cleanse the site in accordance with their traditions to make sure we’re acknowledging the strong connection we have as a university and as a community to our indigenous colleagues.”
Grouting work will begin on the site in the coming weeks with building works to begin in the new year.

Y oung street artists have made their mark on Windale by spruc-ing up a neglected amenities block in Bahloo Reserve.
With the help of local graffiti artist Shane, aka Tunz, a group of youths have taken up their spray cans, injecting colour and creativity into the formally unwelcoming space as part of a partnership between Lake Macquarie City Council and Eastlake Youth Centre.
Jess Rixon, a youth case worker at East-lake Youth Centre, said the project was part of the organisation’s youth oppor-tunities program, which aims to engage
young people with the wider community through creative outlets like, art, music, photography and writing.
“Our idea is to create positive relation-ships between young people and the community using a creative medium,” she said.
Shane, who has been teaching youth graffiti art for more than a decade, said as well as helping deter vandalism, public art projects like the one at Windale helped the adolescents involved develop a sense of identity and purpose.
Ms Rixon said the program also helped put young street artists on the road to involvement with other community initia-tives and employment in areas like spray painting, sign writing and youth work.

The end of the financial year means tax returns, new budget cycles, and for council it also marks the release of the Division of Local Government’s council performance report card.
I am pleased that Lake Macquarie City Council continues to perform strongly on all key economic efficiency and financial management measures.
Council has significant responsibility in providing more than 90 services for our 200,000 residents, so it is important that we use our resources as effectively as we can to meet the needs of our community.
This year’s report card shows that Lake Macquarie provides a more efficient use of community funds when compared to its peer group of councils and the NSW average.
In the 2012/2013 financial year, Council operated with signifi-cantly lower costs per person, and had fewer employees per capita than our neighbouring councils. Overall, Council is out performing the NSW average on most points of comparison.
These results are similar to the past three years, which demonstrates that Council continues to be well placed to provide good-quality daily services that all our residents expect and rely on.
Council continues to have a good record for development approvals with the third lowest average number of days to determine development applications, and an Infrastructure Audit assessed Council’s infrastructure management to be strong.
For several years now Council has been improving its effi-ciency and working towards financial sustainability, some-thing NSW Treasury and IPART have recognised.
It’s also time to recognise the achievements of our local businesses with the 2014 Lake Macquarie Business Excellence Awards.
The awards provide an opportunity for the 12,000 busi-nesses within our region to profile themselves and promote their achievements to the local community. I congratulate the high-quality entries from businesses across our city and tip my hat to this year’s winners. The main advantage of a super fund is the concessional tax rate. Assets owned directly in your name outside of super will be taxed on income and Capital Gain at your marginal tax rate (up to 45%).
Where assets and income owned and earned in your super fund are taxed at a concessional rate, with a maximum rate of only 15%.
In addition, once you reach preservation age (55-60), you are able to commence an income stream (or allocated pension) with your super benefits.
An Allocated Pension, is basically an income stream that is payable from your super fund.

O ver two million Australians are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, a Newspoll survey has found.
The survey showed that nearly 80 per cent of Australians did not believe they were at risk of developing type 2 diabe-tes, despite evidence to the contrary.
“What many don’t realise is that type 2 diabetes doesn’t just affect older people or those who are overweight or obese,” Diabetes Australia CEO, Professor Greg Johnson said.
“Type 2 diabetes can affect anyone.”One person who knows this all too well
is Lorn’s Anne Robinson, who was diag-nosed in 2006, and believes her condition is hereditary.
“My mum was diabetic, and my sister is pre-diabetic,” Ms Robinson said.
“There may be others in the family as well.”
Ms Robinson said that her diabetes is controlled by medication, diet and exer-cise and that staying active probably held it off.
“I’ve always enjoyed walking,” she said.“I think staying active like that prob-
ably held off the diagnosis for a while.”Ms Robinson said the hardest part of
managing her diabetes was the lack of education for non-diabetics.
“I have to be very aware of what I’m eating,” she said.
“I do get pressured into eating some things sometimes.
“There’s not enough support and understanding from non-diabetics.”
Type 2 diabetes is the focus of this year’s National Diabetes Week, which runs until July 19.

T his week is National Diabetes Week, which offers Australians a good opportunity to evaluate
how likely they are to join the close to 1.1 million Australians who live with the disease - and that’s only the confirmed cases.
It’s estimated the total number of Australians with diabetes and pre-diabetes is around 3.2 million, represent-ing close to 14 per cent of the population and making diabetes the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia.
Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) executive officer, Anita Hobson-Powell says despite the worrying statis-tics the good news is that up to 58 per cent of Type 2 cases can be prevented.
“The alarming escalation of diagnosed diabetes cases - which is around 100,000 new cases per annum in Australia - is largely attributed to the poor lifestyle choices and associated obesity epidemic in Australia,” Ms Hobson-Powell said.
“Research shows that Type 2 diabetes is far more likely to develop in individu-als who are overweight and inactive so the best thing Australians can do is to
maintain an active lifestyle by exercising regularly and more importantly, help encourage the next generation to do the same.”
“According to the recent release of the Australia Health Report 2014 by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIWH), 63 per cent of Australian adults are overweight or obese. While the statistics are concerning for both sexes, they are particularly alarming for males, with 70 per cent of men considered overweight compared to 56 per cent of women. Based on these figures, it is unsurprising that Type 2 diabetes is on the rise.”
“However, it is also important to realise that engaging in frequent exercise can
improve your health status on many levels - without a change in body weight. People with Type 2 Diabetes can improve their blood glucose control and reduce their risk of other associated conditions such as cardiovascular disease and depression by doing more exercise, even if they don’t see a change on the scales.”
Based on research evidence, ESSA recommends patients with Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes accumulate a minimum of 210 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 125 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise a week to gain significant benefit. It is further recommended that this includes at least two resistance training sessions per week to achieve maximum benefit.

More than a million Australians are living with diabetes
Over 98 per cent of vision loss in people with diabetes can be prevented with opti-mal management and treatment.
Despite there being effective treatment available, nearly 40 per cent of Australians living with diabetes neglect regular eye examinations, with one in three people diagnosed with diabetes admitting to never having had their eyes tested.
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) Eye Foundation intends to change this alarming statistic and support the efforts of National Diabetes Week, by encourag-ing all Australians, and particularly those with diabetes, to have their eyes tested this month as part of its seventh annual ‘JulEYE’ campaign.
Diabetic retinopathy causes 17 per cent of all blindness and vision impairment and is the most common form of blind-ness in adults 20-74 years. With nearly one million Australians currently diagnosed with diabetes, diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss in the working age population.
“In the early stages of diabetic retin-opathy, there are usually no warning signs,” Professor Mark Gillies, a specialist in emerging treatments for diabetic eye disease explained.
“By the time vision is affected, perma-nent damage may have been done.”
He said diabetics needed to undergo annual eye checks as part of their overall diabetes management.

A huge number of Australia’s suffer from diabetes and our modern lifestyle is only increasing the alarming statistic. At present some 3.61 million Australians have diabetes or pre-diabetes while worldwide 366 million people have diabetes.
According to the Australian Diabetes Council (ADC) diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when there is too much glucose in the blood because the body is not producing insulin or not using insulin - a hormone needed for glucose to enter the cells and be converted to energy - properly. The Australian Diabetes Council (ADC) says it is important to take a balanced view with regard to nutrition; drawing on a range of foods rather than focusing on single nutrients as “good” or “bad”. Clearly no single nutrient is responsible for weight gain or loss, but out total kilojoule (or calorie) intake from all food is what can cause problems.
The food we eat and weight management are essential elements of diabetes management. Being overweight is a huge risk and while the underlying cause of obesity is complex, the resulting problems of obesity are well known: type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular (heart and blood vessel) disease, social exclusion and low self-esteem. The recent news that Newcastle ratepayers will miss out on $48 million from the forth coal loader development (T4) is just the latest example of government subsidies to fossil fuel companies.
In the T4 case the NSW state government did a deal with the developer to allow it to pay 100 times less than other developers. These concessions to large companies represent an enormous amount of lost revenue. Accord-ing to The Australia Institute, Australian governments spend over $10 billion a year subsidising very profitable industries. At a time when all levels of government are crying poor and cutting services we need to be looking at who the government is still willing to support.
One argument used to justify these subsidies is that mining is a big employer and needs support, however the evidence doesn’t support this claim. ABS statistics show that mining is a relatively small provider of jobs in Australia with roughly 2% of people employed in mining, with most of these people concentrated in WA. This compares with 8% of people employed in scientific industries and 9% in manufacturing. Governments have been happy to cut subsidies to manufactures and cut funding to CSIRO but haven’t reduced subsidies to the mining sector. Another argument often used is that companies will take jobs offshore if they don’t get subsi-dies. This argument is somewhat illogical. If there are valuable rocks in the ground in Australia you cannot dig them up overseas. As long as these minerals are valuable there will be market pressure for them to be exported.

Finding ways of financing your business idea have changed - traditionally, your options were limited to your own savings, bank loans, funding from friends and family or grants. But now, more and more small businesses are choosing to finance their business ideas through crowdfunding.
Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, usually online through crowdfund-ing websites. Generally you post your business idea as a campaign onto the website. Your campaign might include a short video, an introduction to your project, some images to elaborate and a list of rewards per dona-tion. The concept is to create a message that will capture the interest of readers and if people want to support your campaign, they can donate money. Depending on the website that you choose, you need to set a monetary goal and a time frame to reach this goal by and be aware of the fees that the website charges.
Your list of rewards per donation is there to encourage people to support your campaign. You can offer incen-tives based on the amount that they donate and these can be anything, including rewards such as acknowl-edgement or discounts of future purchase of the prod-uct you are developing. Other options including offer-ing equity in your business. Before you decide to source your finance through crowdfunding, seek advice from your business adviser so that any implications such as tax or business structures can be considered.

I’m loving this cool, sunny weather at the moment. It’s easy to get out and get some activity in. And there are lots of reasons to!
A recent ‘Science Daily’ report showed that regular exercise can reduce the risk and symptoms of more than 20 physical and mental health conditions just for starters, and can also slow down how quickly your body ages.
A review of research, which summarised the findings of 40 papers published between 2006 and 2010, found that exercise improves conditions including cancer, heart disease, dementia, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, obesity and high blood pressure.
Exercise is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful ways to improve your health. After reviewing the 40 papers, research-ers found that exercise reduces the risk of at least two dozen health conditions, ranging from cancer and heart disease to type 2 diabetes, stroke, dementia and depression.
Exercise also slows down the rate of aging itself, providing perhaps the closest example of a real life fountain of youth as we will ever find.
Hopefully if you get out and get the exercise in now, you won’t get any of those conditions in the first place.
Don’t be the clown who says ‘why bother, you have to die from something’... normally as they are shoving a hot dog or cigarette in their mouth. Yes they will definitely die, and sooner rather than later.
But in the meantime, for those of us that want a good quality of life and enjoy being active and healthy, know that exercise is a huge source of major health benefits.
Many are proven but there are a whole lot more we don’t even know about.
The best thing I can recommend is for you to do the research yourself, and then go out and do a half hour of some kind of activity you enjoy that’s at a fairly intense level for you.
After you have finished sit down while your breath comes back. Then answer one question. How do you feel?

This week is National Diabetes Week, an excellent opportunity for us all to reflect on this disease and identify ways we can avoid it.
Having diabetes means that someone has too much glucose in their blood. Normally our pancreas produces a substance called insulin, which helps to regulate the amount of glucose. However, in diabetes, either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the insulin does not work properly, leaving the glucose to build up in the blood, causing problems. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the disease, affecting about 85-90% of all people with diabetes.
It is also the most easily preventable form of the disease. It is often called a “lifestyle disease” because it is usually triggered by lifestyle factors such as obesity (especially central obesity around the waist), inactivity, high blood pressure and high blood choles-terol. It mostly affects middle-aged (and older) adults, but there is an alarming trend towards young people and even children being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.
Unfortunately, diabetes does not have a cure and if left untreated, or treated poorly, it can result in some very serious medical complications such as kidney disease, eye damage, heart disease, sexual dysfunction, and nerve and blood vessel damage to the feet causing ulcers and infections. There are some excel-lent treatment options available for managing the symptoms of diabetes and delaying the progress of the disease.
Medications help to a certain extent, but some of the best treatment options require patient participation – making deter-mined lifestyle changes and being committed to regular reviews with their healthcare team (including their GP, specialist, nurse educator and allied health providers).
People who are at-risk of diabetes have the most to gain from making a conscious and determined effort to change their lifestyle risk factors. The progression towards diabetes can be reversed at this early pre-diabetic stage with help from your GP and a motivated attitude. The Department of Health and Aging has an online diabetes risk calculator which can show you your risk for developing diabetes.

A highlight of last weekend was the completion of the blue ribbon Newcastle District Major Singles Championship and the Newcastle District Senior Singles Championship.
Raymond Terrace’s Lennon Scott played outstanding bowls to win his first District Singles Championship defeating Trevor Aitchison 31/26 in a keenly-contested final.
Scott appeared set for an easy victory when he scored three shots on the 20th end to lead 21/12, but Aitchison fought back to hit the front 24/21 scoring 12 unanswered shots. Scott rallied scoring three shots to level up 24-all and then won the next five ends to lead 30/24, before Aitchison scored a two but Scott was not to be denied scoring a single to clinch the title. An amazing statistic for the final was the killing of 12 ends.
The semi-finals were also two excel-lent games, with Aitchison edging out the giantkilling Owen Elliott (Nelson Bay) 31/29 and Scott beat Raymond Terrace clubmate Jamie Minter 31/23. In the quarter-finals Aitchison downed
defending titleholder David Govan (Valentine) 31/24, Elliott beat David Wayland (Beresfield) 31/26, Scott was a comfortable 31/15 victor over Jim Towers (Raymond Terrace) and Minter downed Shannon Rowe (Alder Park) 31/17.
State Senior NSW representative Michael Beesley (Beresfield) led all the way to convincingly beat John Sander-son (Charlestown) 31/19 in the Senior Singles Championship Final. The win was Beesley’s first Seniors Singles Cham-pionship success, following on from his Senior Pairs Championship victory in 2013.
Scott and Beesley will now have the honour of representing Newcastle in the representative State Singles Play-offs to be held at Ettalong Memorial Bowling Club from October 20 to 23.

Wanderers remain undefeated after 13 rounds of the NHRU competition follow-ing a 57-10 win over University at No.2 Sportsground last weekend.
Winger William Coffey starred for the home side with four tries.
Southern Beaches travelled to Nelson Bay and came away with a strong 43-19 victory. Fly half Mark Butler led the way for the visitors with 23 points from two tries, five conversions and a field goal.

The home city advantage for the University of Newcastle helped the local educational institution dominate the gold medal tally at the 2014 Eastern University Games last week.
University of Newcastle’s Jake Sylvester (men’s shortboard) and Celia Waterfield (women’s bodyboard) were successful in the Australian University Championship for Surfing which was held concurrently with the Games.
Other local winners were the women’s football, open golf, men’s and women’s hockey, open lawn bowls, mixed Oztag, open squash, open tenpin, women’s touch and mixed ultimate frisbee teams.
The women’s football team defeated the Australian National University 2-0 in the final. The men’s hockey team triumphed 2-1 over the University of NSW with the women’s team proved too good for Macquarie University 5-1. The open lawn bowls team overcame the University of NSW in the final.
Eastern University Games project coordinator, Rob Sheekey declared the tournament a success. “It’s great to see a competitive edge partnered with sports-manship across the teams. We hope to see similar behaviour at the upcoming Australian University Games held in Sydney later this year,” Mr Sheekey said.

THE NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS’ NSW CUP side secured an impressive 44-10 victory over Manly at Brookvale Oval on Saturday afternoon.
The Knights were forced to reshuffle their backline prior to the match after losing Timana Tahu and Chanel Mata’utia through injury.
Despite conceding an early try, the Knights responded with a smooth backline movement down the left edge, which enabled winger Honeti Tuha to cross the line.
Newcastle’s lead grew minutes later when forward Pat Vaivai made a half break, offloading to Matt Minto who sent it out wide for centre Pat Mata’utia to race away untouched.
Fullback Brayden Williame extended the lead for the Knights moments later when he crossed over from a short side play by Michael Dobson.
The Knights finished off a great first half when Tuha threw an inside ball for centre James Elias to burrow over the line.
Newcastle lead 22- 4 at the break.Both teams had its chances at the start
of the second half and it was the 57th minute when Manly crossed the line.
From then, it was all Newcastle as they

T he Knights head into this weekend’s Rise For Alex round full of confidence after finishing strongly to defeat Cronulla 31-18 at Remondis Stadium
on Sunday.After trailing 18-6 at halftime, coach Wayne
Bennett said the Knights had played without intensity in the opening stanza.
“They turned it around and played with a bit more intensity in the second half and played a bit smarter,” Bennett said.
“[Cronulla] had been down 24-0 at the break in their last couple of games, but got up to beat the opposition so I didn’t want to be leading at halftime,” Bennett joked.
“So to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t overly disappointed in one sense.
"I’d hoped we lured them into a false sense of security, but we weren’t playing well and we weren’t playing with a lot of intensity.
“But we picked it all up in the second half and got it right. I’ve got no doubt at 18-0 they thought it was all over and they had the game."
The win was Newcastle’s third in succession and sees them six points adrift of the top eight.

The Knights’ push towards an unlikely finals berth will undoubtedly be boosted by having six of their remaining eight games played at Hunter Stadium.
The first of those home games is this Sunday against the Gold Coast Titans at 2pm.
Knights captain, Kurt Gidley said the team was keen to keep the momentum going against
PAUL MONFORTEthe Titans while supporting injured teammate, Alex McKinnon.
“We are just focused on next week now and next week is the big week for Alex and prob-ably one of the most important games of the year to win for us,” Gidley said.
Bennett agreed with Gidley and said the club was looking forward to the event.
“It’s Alex’s day,” Bennett said.“I can’t add too much more than that,
because everyone knows what Alex means to all of us at the Knights.
“They wear his name on their chest and jerseys every week, so it’s all about Alex next week.
“We want to just give him the best day we possibly can.”
