D irected by funnymen Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogan ‘This Is The End’ is a laugh-out-loud romp that posits

the question, ‘how would a bunch of privileged Hollywood A-Listers handle the Apocolypse?’ The answer, of course is hilariously.

The story centres around Jay Baruchel (‘Knocked Up’) who hits LA to visit his good mate Seth Rogan with the intention of taking it easy and catching up.

However, things quickly speed up for Baruchel after he is dragged along to James Franco’s housewarming party.

If that wasn’t bad enough, The Rapture hits downtown LA ushering in the Apocolypse. Now, Jay and Seth are desperately sheltering in James’ house for rescue along with a few other friends. They must band together to attempt to survive the end of the world, only for Jay to find that they are maybe a tad too dumb and superficial.

W ith 25 albums under their collective belt, you’d be forgiven for thinking that punk-metal

juggernaut Motorhead might want to take it easy in what should be the band’s twilight years.

However, it seems as though there is plenty of life left in this band yet, if ‘Aftershock’ is any indication.

While they are definitely not trying to break any new musical ground (and why the hell should they, they’re Motorhead), there is a palpable sense of urgency that is constantly bubbling underneath the surface of these tracks – making it one of their most exciting albums, in this reviewer’s opinion, since their 1986 slab ‘Orgasmatron’.

Standouts include the thunderous opener ‘Heartbreaker’ and the slow burner ‘Silence When You Speak to Me.’

If you are looking for an unabashed piece of escapism to help you forget about your mid-week tribulations, then this piece of sometimes

schmaltzy and often overly entimental cinema should be just the antidote.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis (‘Back To The Future’), Forrest Gump follows the eclectic life of the title characher - a simple man with a low I.Q. but good intentions. From humble beginnings

in Alabama, Gump manages to pack quite a bit into his life, from a tour of Vietnam, to becoming a ping pong champion to becoming shrimp tzar of the US.

Gump’s simplistic view on life affects pretty much everyone he comes into contact with – from his life-long love interest Jenny to his curmudgeonly commanding officer Lieutenant Dan.

Hanks is outstanding.

T here’s little denying that, since releasing their debut long player ‘Here Come the Lies’ in 2002, The

Drones have been at the forefront of musical adventurism in the Australian music scene. Their sound, almost uncatergorisable switches effortlessly from slightly off-kilter ballads through to full on rock assaults. However, the band have taken this ethos to the next level with their stunning seventh album, ‘I See Seaweed’ and for frontman Gareth Liddiard, the success of the album was to find the spaces between the notes.

The band enlisted the services of keyboard player Steve Hesketh and Liddiard told TE that the addition of the extra member helped immeasurably in fleshing out the Drones sound even further.

“Having Steve in the band really frees both Dan [Luscombe, guitar] and I to stop playing – you just can’t underestimate the power of silence” he said.

“Also the piano can get away with things that guitars can’t – some things that you are able to get away with on the piano just sound w**ky on the guitar so it also frees us up to go places musically that we couldn’t before.

If you caught The Drones set, opening for Neil Young, at Bimbadgen earlier this year, you would have witnessed a master-class in musical tension with lashings of light and shade courtesy of the muscular guitar acrobatics of Gareth Liddiard and Dan Luscombe and the dirgy rhythm section of Mike Noga and Fiona Kitschin. While there set may’ve been, at times, at odds with the winery crowd, there was a sense of danger, musical antagonism and a palpable fragility, a feeling that everything could topple over at any given moment, but never does, that is reflected perfectly on the album.

“Yeah that show was pretty crazy – we were only supposed to play the one show but ended up playing the tour,” Liddiard said.

“I guess that sometimes the crowd didn’t like us but we really tried to feed off that and give it back to them in the performance.”

For Liddiard, the proof is in the performance and he said punters could expect no less than 100 per cent when The Drones hit the stage.

“When I see a good gig it’s proof that rock and roll can be so much more than just music,” he said.

“It might sound a bit w**ky, but The Drones are the real thing onstage – we’re more MC5 than ELO, if you know what I mean.”

A fter a brilliant turn in the runaway smash-hit film ‘The Sapphires’, Jessica Mauboy’s star is

showing no signs of slowing down. Her latest album ‘Beautiful’ has already netted the affable pop star two gold certified singles in ‘To The End of the Earth’ and ‘Pop A Bottle (Fill Me Up)’ and she is about to embark on her first national headlining tour – an extensive 27-date tour that will leave few Aussie stones unturned. Jessica was kind enough to take time out from rehearsals to have a quick chat to TE.Hi Jessica thanks for the chat. So what’s happening at the moment?

Rehearsing, rehearsing and more rehearsing!So you must be looking forward to getting out on the road for the To The End of The Earth tour. It’s a pretty hectic schedule.

It’s been a crazy few months but I am beyond excited to be taking this tour on the road and connecting with my fans again. A hearty congratulations are in order on the album, by the way. Can you tell me a little bit about the writing and recording of it and how the process differed to or indeed built on what you accomplished on ‘Get ‘Em Girls’ and ‘Been Waiting’?

I have been lucky to work with some incredible people on all my records – in this instance, I feel like I was a lot stronger and more in control over the outcome of the

songs. I guess I feel more confident in knowing what I wanted and how to convey that. I was involved in every element of the process. Who or what was influencing you during the writing and recording of ‘Beautiful’?

Travelling so much with The Sapphires was incredible, however I did feel myself missing my family and Australia. A lot of these emotions ended up influencing songs on the album. Given the phenomenal success of ‘The Sapphires’, did you feel any pressure to, in a way, recapture that success with the album or was it more of a case of just getting in the studio and doing the songs justice?

I was worried about getting back into the headspace to write an album after all the touring around the world with The Sapphires, but once I got into the studio – it all just came out!You must ’ve known when you read ‘The Sapphires’ script that there was some gold in those pages, but did you have any idea that it would take off like it has?

None of us had any idea of how big the film was to become. I feel so blessed to have been a part of an incredible production that told an important story in our history and to take that story around the world. So who or what was it that made you want to pick up a mic in the first place?

ME! I always had a hairbrush in my hand from as long as I can remember. Mum & Dad were always very supportive but I think I drove them crazy with all my singing! How would you say you have ta

evolved as a performer since the ‘Idol’ days?

I have learnt so much about who I am and have grown up a lot too – I think that’s reflected in the music that I am making now. If there was one thing you’d want people to take away from a Jessica Mauboy show, what would it be?

FUN! What is your proudest moment to date?

I have so many moments that I have to pinch myself – the most recent was performing at the Emmy’s Governors Ball and then with the kids at the Yipirinya School out in Alice Springs where I am an ambassador. Both the staff and the kids at the school are amazing - I feel incredibly proud and priviledged to work with them. So after the To The End of the Earth tour eventually wraps up, what’s next on the agenda for Jessica Mauboy?

Hopefully a much needed holiday! And of course continue to work this album. After that who knows, there are so many exciting things on the horizon, I am just taking one step at a time!

T o say that 2013 has been a trying year for Frenzal Rhomb frontman Jay Whalley would be an understatement. In February,

the singer underwent brain surgery to remove a pig tapeworm from his brain that he picked up in Central America four years ago.

Thaqnkfully, Whalley’s surgery was a complete success and he is back in his rightful place as the frontman of the elder statesmen of Aussie punk rock.

TE caught up with Whalley and we found him with a burgeoning curiosity for herpetology.

“Yeah I’m just at my mum’s house in Byron Bay and I’m looking out the window at this massive three-metre diamond python outside,” he said.

“I’ve never seen one before – it’s just staring at me. I’m pretty sure they’re not venomous, though. I hope not because it’s a big ba****d.”

Whalley said he was champing at the bit to get back out on the road after Frenzal were forced to pull out of the Descendents tour, earlier this year, due to the surgery although he added that he was disappointed that the tapeworm didn’t bestow any supernatural powers on him.

“Yeah I was definitely hoping to get some powers but I am still limited to one language, I can’t read people’s minds and I certainly can’t control snakes,” he said.

“We’ve done a few shows already so it’s great to finally get back to normal, I mean, brain surgery is pretty heavy.”

Now with the “unpleasantness” behind him, the band are showing no signs of slowing down with a new album in the works as well as a contribution to a tribute album for the late No Use For A Name frontman Tony Sly.

“Fat Mike [NOFX, Fat Wreck Chords] asked us to contribute and we chose a track of Tony’s solo record. It was all well and good to be asked but we didn’t really have the money to record it so we did it on the cheap at my studio [The Pet Food Factory].

“We’re also working on our next album at the moment - so we’re busy writing songs and trying to corral all the members who live interstate.”

So, after plying their self-effacing trade for more than 20 years, what is it about Frenzal Rhomb that has kept audiences coming back?

“I’d say it’s more a damning indictment on our society that we’re allowed to continue to make records,” he quipped.

It seems as though the “difficult second album” syndrome that has plagued so many bands has passed Rockhampton-born outfit Busby

Marou well and truly by, with their sophomore effort ‘Farewell To Fitzroy’ taking the gloriously nuanced folk pop and nimble storytelling, that was central to their debut, to the next level with a much larger and complete album, both in sound and scope.

While originally known as a duo, Tom Busby and Jeremy Marou have fleshed out their sound with a full band on ‘Farewell to Fitzroy’ and Marou told TE that, given the band had evolved quite considerably ince the duo days, the pair wanted the album to reflect this.

V oodoo Express are a four-piece blues rock outfit hailing from the swamps of Newcastle.

Four friends banded together to hang out, jam and to perform the rock and blues standards that they loved, tweaked in their own inimitable style. Little did they realise their musical pedigrees would create a chemistry that would lead to the composition of fantastic original songs, a live LP recording, and the surreal chance to perform alongside international acting and musical luminary David Hasselhoff.

After years of playing shows across the country, the guys are better than ever and ready to showcase what they have to offer in a massive end of year show. Voodoo Express will be joined on stage by guest legends Grant Walmsley of The Screaming Jets and Freebird, Ngariki of High Horse and guitarist of Rose Tattoo Dai Pritchard. To help capture the live vibe, the band headed over to Nashville and enlisted the services of producer Brad Jones (Missy Higgins, Justin Townes Earle) and Marou said, Jones’ playing background made proceedings that much easier.

Aside from bringing in their touring band to flesh out their sound, the pair also enlisted the services of some “heavy friends”” to add their musical gravitas to the album, including arguably Australia’s greatest songwriter Don Walker who co-wrote the track ‘Luck’’ with Busby and legendary Hawaiian kona guitarist and pedal steel player Al Perkins (Flying Burrito Brothers, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Emmylou Harris).

W hen it comes to ivory ticklers, there aren’t too many out there with the chops or the big

personalities as Elton John and Billy Joel. Between them, the pair have a staggering amount of hits under their belts and have etched out a place as some of the most successful recording artists in musical history.

Now, the music of Captain Fantastic and the Piano Man will be brought to life in a dynamic tribute featuring two of the best in the business – Lance Strauss, aka Elton Jack and Jimmy Mann, aka BigShot.

Strauss told TE that audiences could expect a highly dynamic affair with the show starting out in intimate mode with the pair playing some of Elton and Billy’s best loved ballads including ‘Your Song’ and ‘ ‘Just The Way You Are’ before being joined by the band for such rockers as ‘Movin Out’, ‘I’m Still Standing’ and ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’.

“They [Billy and Elton] really are two fabulous artists who have written some of the best-loved songs out there,” Strauss said.

“Because they have so many big songs it can be a real problem deciding what goes in the show but there are some “must plays” like ‘Crocodile Rock’ and ‘Rocket Man’ and both Jimmy and I are really into performance so it will be a very exciting show.”

Strauss’ Elton John journey has lasted for 25 years – from impressing friends at parties to gracing the stages of the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall.

“Most of my life I looked like Elton and I also played the piano so I was the guy at parties who sat at the piano and played his songs,” he said.

“I have a background in musical theatre and in 1986 I had the opportunity to play Elton in a play about John Lennon and then the following year I ended up winning ‘Red Faces’ – the segment on ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’ and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

W hen serving up modern Australian cuisine, it can be easy for a restaurant to become another

blurred face in a crowded market, so when I visited Falls Restaurant at Kahibah Sports Club I was looking for something to make it stand out. Happily, I found it, not just in the food, but in the form of jovial staff members, Steph and Marvin.

Upbeat, chatty and funny, the attitudes of Steph and Marvin were apt for the modern Australian theme. I could have quite happily cracked a beer with either of them and spent the night discussing the finer points of Michael Clarke’s batting technique or innovations in the Hills Hoist industry. Alas, there was delicious food to be consumed, so we couldn’t talk all night.

My dining partner and I started with some cheese bread, and he also

enjoyed some panko calamari rings, which he reported was high up on the satisfaction stakes. I chose to skip an entrée, lest I need to be rolled out later.

Moving on to mains, and continuing with his seafood theme, my dining partner chose the beer battered flathead fillets, while I opted for the grilled chicken breast, served with avocado and hollandaise sauce. Again, no complaints. The flathead was gleefully devoured while I savoured my chicken – tender, juicy and just the right size. Both were served with a robust salad and tasty chips that were crunchy on the outside, but light and fluffy within.

I then took on a passionfruit cheesecake for desert, while my dining partner couldn’t face another mouthful. Pleased with my life choices, I went to town on the cheesecake, but with the right thickness of crust and the sweet passionfruit topping, it was hard not to.

If you’re after unashamedly infectious hooks, then that’sd exactly what you’re going to get at the Great

Northen this weekend when Melbourne’s purveyors of party peppered punk, The Bennies, hit the stage.

With their first album ‘Party Party Party’ setting the agenda quite succinctly, The Bennies have shown that they don’t want that party to end with their latest long player ‘Rainbows In Space’ which drops this week.

Like some kind of lethal speedball, ‘Rainbows In Space’, combines all the high energy, reggae-tinged punk rock party anthems your tiny heart can endure. There’s chilled out ska rhythms, brain-melting solos, bouncing basslines, speedy hi-hats and some of the most addictive choruses ever to seize upon your brain.

It seems as though swampy blues soaked rock and roll is the order of the day in venues across Australia with acts like

Chase the Sun and Marshall Okel kicking goals wherever they go.

There is another act that looks set to join the ranks of the Aussie blues rock elite – Transvaal Diamond Syndicate.

The band began life in 2009 and, almost immediately, set tongues wagging largely due to their raw, energetic and, as some hyperbolists would have you believe, primeval live shows.

Not ones to shy away from the rigours of the road, Transvaal Diamond Syndicate have been plugging away, almost non-stop since packing up their gig bags.

A slot on 2011’s Byron Bay Bluesfest alongside the likes of Bob Dylan, Michael Franti and Ben Harper kicked off a year that would have the band release a foot-stompin’ as anything 7-track mini album, ‘Sins Of The Blessed’ that is as diverse as the terrain the band covered, deftly skipping from straight blues jams through to some rockabilly, stoner groove and a bit of roots-esque balladry.

After a massive 40-date East Coast tour to promote the release, the bad hit back again, in 2010 with the EP ‘Diamonds And Dust’ and again got tongues wagging. The track ‘Behind That Smile’ took out a highly commended spot in the blues and roots category of the Q-song awards while the track ‘Home’ toolk out the number one spot in Brisbane radio station 4ZZZ’s hot 100 of 2010.

Lat year was pretty much the same for this sonic workhorse with the band undertaking a mammoth 63-date East Coast tour from Cairns to Tassie (and all points in between) to promote the single ‘Pistols At Dawn’. The guys racked up an impressive 20,000-plus kilometres in their trusty tour van – The TDS Express.

There’s no denying that this is one band that loves touring. While the term ‘the hardest working rock band’ in [insert country here]

gets bandied about quite a bit, if there was one band that could lay claim to the title, it’s Transvaal Diamond Syndicate.

In keeping with their apparent daemonic quest to achieve white line fever, last year the boys nutted out a mammoth 63-date tour, but this year they’re ramping it up with a ridiculously ambitious 70-show, five-month Oz tour.

“Basically, if you don’t love music, I wouldn’t recommend it,” frontman Christian Tryhorn said.

The boys are hitting the road to promote their latest single ‘Estranged Blues’ from their upcoming long player so get along to see what all the fuss is about.
