Ah May, the season of renewal in the Upper Midwest. Furnaces are shut off, new life in the outdoors is visible everywhere, birds are returning and vocal, the days are far longer than recent past and in some cases there are major league baseball teams actually winning games (currently the Twins are 8 and 11 and 5-1/2 games out of first as we go to press). It’s also the start of the up tic in tire sales with snow tires coming off, plans for the upcoming summer sea- son and vacation travels, not to mention the opening of the fishing season. All in all, it’s the start of our long anticipat- ed spring, summer and fall seasons – oh yes, doesn’t it also appear that attitudes are more positive? Additionally, there are also two major events that occur in May. One is Mother’s Day. I remember once when there was a movement to change Mother’s Day as it often con- flicted with the Minnesota Fishing Opener. A short lived attempt in that Mother’s Day is a national day of recogni- tion, and most other states aren’t as excited about a “Fishing Opener”. I’ve always looked forward to this day (weekend) as it has been one of calmness, befitting the theme of motherhood. Often taken for granted, mothers have just as often been credited with being the foundation of the family, the common sense in conflict resolution and the one true example of unconditional love. I hope every- one has a beautiful Mother’s Day, however you celebrate, and even though they already know it guys – make sure you remind them how special they are! The second big event in May is a day that is also very special to me, Memorial Day, the kick off to the first of three – three day weekends we all look forward to in the summer (4th of July and Labor Day being the others). More than a three day holiday, this day more significantly marks our country’s recognition of those who gave so we can Message From The President – Pat McFarlane benefit. As a veteran myself, I’ve often reflected on the age of “those” that gave and it’s hard for a country to grasp the fact that the vast majority of these fine people were merely in their late teens. What were we doing, or what was important to us, when we were 17, 18 and 19? Most often thought about is WWII of course, but the vast majority of our nation’s conflicts were manned by persons in this age group, not only engaged to protect our nation but also to establish our country and at times to preserve it, American Revolution and Civil War respectively. Let us not reserve our memorializing to simply those who served in the armed forces but also those that supported their efforts on the home front and abroad. Let us never lose sight of the fact that these days of recognition need to be taught to our chil- dren. Maybe the age factor will bring a greater sense of appreciation to future generations. What a coincidence that we celebrate Mother’s Day and Memorial Day in the same month. After all, if the mothers really could have had their say we probably would never have needed the second day of recognition! Back by popular demand is another Minnesota Twins game on Sunday, September 20th at Target Field at 1:00 p.m. Again this year, we will be sitting in the “Great Clips” area. By coincidence, the Twins will be playing the Los Angeles Angels again this year. The cost per ticket is $28, which includes a $10 food and beverage voucher. We have only 109 seats reserved for the game, so please sign up as soon as possible if you, your family, your employees and your friends would like to attend. You will find the Registration Form on Page 5 of this newsletter. Have a wonderful month – Mom likes flowers guys!
