ITTO Thematic Programme on REDDES
REDDES: Reducing Deforestation and Forest Degradation and Enhancing Environmental Services
General objective:
To reduce deforestation and forest degradation, enhance environmental services and help improve forest dependant livelihoods through sustainable management of tropical forests, and forest restoration
Specific objective: To strengthen the capacity of ITTO developing member countries and their stakeholders to:countries and their stakeholders to:• reduce unplanned deforestation• reduce forest degradation
i t i d h li t h iti ti d th• maintain and enhance climate change mitigation and other environmental services of tropical forests; and
• contribute to the social and economic sustainability of forest‐dependent communitiesforest‐dependent communities
ITTO REDDES Demonstration Projects

REDD Conservation Project in Indonesia: ChallengesChallenges
One of REDD+ demonstration projects in IndonesiaOne of REDD demonstration projects in Indonesia
To develop a robust measurable, reportable and p , pverifiable (MRV) system for monitoring REDD and enhancement of forest carbon stocks
To improve the livelihoods of local communities living inside and in the surrounding area of MBNP

Lessons learned
• Needs and constraints in tropical t i tcountries are paramount
• No system in place at national and FMU levels for comprehensive forestlevels for comprehensive forest monitoring in many countries in the tropicstropics‐ reliable and comprehensive RS data is lacking‐ local capacity in image capture and
processing is weakprocessing is weak
• Need to reinforce the capacities of national institutions for the developmentof REDD/MRV system
• Need for broad policy reforms for ff i REDDeffective REDD+

Concluding Remarks
• Bali Road Map and Copenhagen Accord i th i l l f REDDrecognize the crucial role of REDD+
• Ministerial Meetings on REDD+ Partnership: P i i M h O l i M d N iParis in March, Oslo in May and Nagoya in October 2010
I d bli fi i t dd th• Increased public financing to address the needs in tropical countries is essential
I dditi b t ti l i t i t t• In addition, substantial private investment will be necessary for effective REDD+ activities – Topic for research
