Principal’s ReportNau mai - haere mai!

Welcome to 2019, and to all new students and families joining us for the first time, a warm welcome to the Hargest community!

I am pleased to advise we are starting the year fully staffed in spite of some late changes in December. You will no doubt be aware of national issues around teacher recruitment so I am very grateful indeed not only to have enough teachers but very good ones too.

Late last year following extensive planning by a working group throughout that year,

some key changes were made in relation to the “pastoral care” system for seniors specially. These translate to changes to the organisation of Senior Form classes, and Form times. Please refer to the opposite page for clear information about these changes and the reasons for them.

Kia waimarie mo te tau hou - best wishes for the new year! I look forward to working with you, with your children, and their teachers throughout 2019.

PTA ReportKia Ora and welcome to 2019

The recent Uniform Sales have gone extremely well . The availability of EFTPOS and improvement in our systems ensure we offer a superb service, providing an affordable, very good quality uniform. Thanks to all the PTA Committee who run these sales. For individual sale and purchase of items during the year contact Lisa Martin at 2176129 ext 205 and she will make a time to meet you (usually after 10.00am).

The PTA AGM is to be held on Tuesday 19th March at 7.30pm at the Senior Campus. We hope to see lots of new members in 2019. There are only five or six meetings during the year. They are a great opportunity to find out more about the running of our school and we often seek valuable parent voice at these

meetings.

The James Hargest College PTA is a service oriented group. Other than the Uniform Shop, we do not do any fundraising. Examples of other services we provide are helping at Open Day, the School Ball, fronting seminars of interest to parents, serving supper during interviews and after Prize Giving etc.

We ask parents/caregivers/whanau for a PTA donation and you will see this on your school account. The PTA decides how this is allocated - another good reason to come along to the meeting and share your ideas.

IMPORTANT Form class and Graduation changes for 2019Senior Campus onlyIn our review we asked if there were better ways to support our students, especially in their senior years (years 11, 12, 13). Consultation included Board of Trustees, parents, students voice, staff, research and other schools. Ideas considered were

wide-ranging. The key outcomes and purpose of each change is summarised below. It is important to remember the main focus behind the changes was to sup-port and nurture senior students. Where possible senior students will remain with

the same form teacher which encourages stronger relationships all round.

Change Purpose1. All Form classes will be in year level groupings

Year 11-13 groups stay same for three years. Form teacher follows the group.

Form times can focus on year-appopriate processes, issues, and stages. Form teacher ‘mentors’ students through three senior years.

2. Form times will be 25 minutes twice per week (instead of 4 x 10 minutes per week) on Tuesday and Fridays (see new bell times below).

More time effective. Allows Form teachers better opportunity to have conversations, unpack age-appropriate information, check attendance, correspond with parents/whanau etc.

3. Year 9-12 formal assemblies will be held fortnightly, in Friday form time, (not in class time).

Class teaching time not reduced by assemblies means more teaching/learning time.

4. Daily notices will be read at start of period 1 or accessed via web page or KAMAR app.

All information is given promptly. Allows Form teachers to focus on attendance and other matters.

5. Year 9-10 Graduation changes:• to be called “Ka Hikitia Te Aroturuki”• criteria = the school values• teachers update scores more frequently• Graduation ceremonies discontinued• “Distinction” still recognised• Poor scores still a tool for identifying students needing

mentoring/close personal support

• a more age-appropriate system• focuses attention on school values, applied in class• still a tool for students, staff and parents to affirm good

attitudes etc, recognise excellence and identify issues.

Hargest Academic Blues Ceremony 2019(Awarded in 2018)

Tuesday 12 March at 12.30pm in Gym 3All parents/caregivers/whanau of recipients are welcome to attend.

Academic ExcellenceFor Academic Excellence the Hargest system of awards is based on the NZQA system of endorsing certificates with Excellence, except that Excellence credits must be earned in one calendar year (ie 2018). To gain a general Excellence a student must gain at least 50 Excellence credits at that or a higher level.

Subject/Course ExcellenceTo gain Subject/Course Excellence a student must gain 14 or more credits at Excellence in a subject in one calendar year. Of these, at least 3 credits must be from externally assessed standards and at least 3 credits from internally assessed standards in that subject.

100 ClubStudents who get 100 Excellence credits are invited to join our elite 100 Club.

This year, Invercargill became the latest refugee resettlement location in N.Z., with former refugees from Colombia relocating here to start a new life, free from oppression. I had just finished studying my Master’s degree in the Netherlands, and had returned home to Invercargill. Fast forward to today, and I now work for the Red Cross within the refugee resettlement programme as part of the pathways to employment team, helping to prepare and assist the former refugees into work. It is a fantastic, rewarding, stimulating job that presents new challenges every day, and I feel very fortunate to be in a position where I can make a difference in peoples’ lives.

Out of all the qualified, experienced and talented candidates I got selected for the job largely because I speak Spanish, a skill that I learnt here at James Hargest. Becoming bilingual has always been a life goal of mine. And I knew that, short of living abroad as a child, or having multilingual family members

and being exposed to a second language from an early age or an extended exchange abroad, the only way I was going to get there was through doing the grind in the class-room. I also knew that if I didn’t start then, in high school, I would never get around to doing it and would regret not taking the opportunity. I distinctly remember selecting Spanish as my language of choice due to the large number of Spanish-speaking countries in the world. It was a logical decision. I also remember that none of my close friends signed up with me to take it. However, my desire to learn a language outweighed my desire to stay in my comfort zone and go with my mates, a decision that today I am thankful I made.

If you had told me back in high school that my knowledge of Spanish was going to be one of the deciding factors in gaining employment - in Invercargill - I would never have believed you. It wasn’t the degrees I

have completed, or my grades, or the scholarships or awards I have won – but it was my Spanish, my interest subject, that became the most useful skill for this job that I really wanted.

The point I am trying to make, is to encour-age you that you just never know how things are going to play out in life. Try as you might, you can’t predict where you will be, what will become relevant later on down the track, only what you are doing here and now.

In whatever you do, apply yourself diligently because you never know how, in some roundabout way, it will become useful later. School isn’t about memorising ‘stuff’. It’s about learning how to think and how to learn, things that you can apply in whatever context in the world. And the world needs that, it needs more of you, bringing your unique skills, perspectives and ideas.

Mr Marsh taught PE, Maths and more recently he co taught the year 12 Outdoor Recreation Programme. This enabled him to shared his love of the Outdoors with his students. We wish Mr Marsh all the best as he takes up the full time position teaching PE, his specialist subject, at SBHS. Chris made a

significant contribution to boys’ Football at Hargest, especially the 1st X1, during his six years here. His passion for Football and his previous experience as a New Zealand All White was truly valued.

Ricky Bakker worked at the Junior Campus as a Year 7 teacher for two years. Ricky involved himself fully in the life of our school and was always a popular member of staff versus students sports games.

Students and staff valued the contributions he made whilst teaching here, his keen sense of humour and sporting prowess ensured he will be missed. Ricky left us to work in sports education. We wish him well in his new position

Fair Go Ad AwardsSuccess!

In 2018 for the first time, one of our Year 10 English classes entered the Fair Go ad award. Students had to make a 30 -second travel ad, showcasing their hometown.

Our most successful ad was made by Olivia Horton, Madilyn Haar-Wilkinson, Mika Buchanan and Heidi White. The girls took an ironic approach, listing all the reasons you shouldn’t come to Invercargill, but ending with the punchline “Don’t come to Invercargill - we want to keep it to ourselves.”

Dissecting your teen’s NCEA results can be confusing, particularly if you’re more familiar with the old School Certificate system. Here we break down what the grades mean now and what it means for your teen’s future.

The four grades defined Not Achieved (NA) = Not demonstrating understanding or knowledge of the subject at the depth requiredAchieved (A) = Demonstrates understanding or knowledge of the subject through describingMerit (M) = Demonstrates in-depth understanding or knowledge of the subject through explainingExcellence (E) = Demonstrates comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the subject through being able to apply, compare, contrast and justify. This is a higher order of thinking.

Level 1 credit requirements - At least 80 level 1 credits with a minimum of 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits.

Level 2 credit requirements - 60 credits at Level 2 or higher. 20 of the credits they achieved in Level 1 will be rolled over to their Level 2 certificate to help them reach their ‘80 credit’ requirement.

Level 3 credit requirements - Level 2 is completed then they are only required to complete 60 credits at Level 3 or higher. 20 of the credits they achieved in Level 2 will be rolled over to their Level 3 certificate to help them reach their ‘80 credit’ requirement.

When applying for university or a job the more Merit or Excellence credits a student has the better. This will show universities and employers the student can work at a level above average.

If your on/daughter has a particular tertiary degree in-mind, they must look into the minimum grade criteria for this degree. Some degrees require a certain number of Excellence or Merit credits in particular subjects in addition to meeting the University Entrancerequirements. They may have passed the above credit requirements for each level but this doesn’t necessarily mean they will gain University Entrance. It’s important they understand the University Entrance requirements so they can meet this criteria if they would like to pursue tertiary study.

Ka Hikitia“The Step Up” - A well established tradition at Hargest

On Monday 4 February 2019 all students who graduated from the Junior Campus in 2018 gathered together to make the “step up” (Ka Hikitia) to the Senior Campus. This is a school tradition which began in 2008 and marks the next step in our James Hargest College students’ education. Students who were not at the Junior Campus previously met up with those on the Ka Hikitia at the main gates of the Senior Campus, as the two groups merged into one!

Fair Go showed excerpts from two of our ads as teasers, but Olivia, Madilyn, Mika and Heidi actually made the final.

Pictured with their certificate are Olivia, Madilyn and Mika. You can see the ad on YouTube if you search “Don’t Come to Invercargill.”

Congratulations to....

New Recycling System startedSenior Campus

15 students aged 14-18 are keen to reduce the waste that is being created at James Hargest Senior College. In Term 4 of last year, they assisted with the setting up of a composting system. A composting bin was made by Mr Oliver’s Year 9 social studies class by up-cycling wooden pallets. The Enviro group routinely collect shredded paper, sawdust from the Technology

Department and layer it with grass clippings created from the school site. With addition of water a great re-usable product will soon be ready. If this wasn’t happening, it would simply be going to landfill. In addition recycle bins have been installed in the canteen. Pupils can now pop their plastics, aluminium tins and glass waste into the green wheelie bin and other waste in the red landfill wheelie bin. We urge students to follow the simple procedure as the Enviro group volunteers to sort the recyclable waste in their own time. They would rather not have food scraps mixing with the plastics etc.

Please remember -

RE-USE - for example bring a metal water bottle to school. Water is free and you will save plenty of money and reduce waste.

REDUCE - Do you really need to glad wrap all food items or buy food in non recycla-ble packaging?

RECYCLE - Use the system at school or take it home and pop it in your own Yellow wheelie bin.

If you are interested in helping (both students and parents), please contact Mr Oliver.

Our Junior Campus students are to engage in recycling early this year too!!

Vision TestingYear 7

The Vision Technicians visit during the year to undertake vision screening for all Year 7 students and colour vision screening for Year 7 male students. Your child will not be screened if they are under the care of a Specialist and/or Optometrist. Parents/caregivers will be notified if further assessment is required by an Optometrist. If you do NOT wish your child to be screened, please notify the school. Some Year 8 students who were absent in Year 7, or who require retesting, may also be seen by the Vision Technicians.

AbsencesIf your child is absent from school, including being late, please telephone the school office before 9 a.m. on 217 9250. The class roll is taken at 8.55 am and absences are reported to the office at that time. If your child is coming in late, they must go to the office before they go to their class to have their name deleted from the list of absences. If you are aware in advance that your child is going to be absent, please advise the school office. We do try to contact parents/caregivers by text regarding all unexplained absences.

HPV VaccineAll boys and girls in Year 8 are able to have the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine at school to protect them against future infection from nine types of HPV that lead to cervical, anal, genital, mouth and throat cancers, as well as genital warts. The HPV vaccine is the final immunisation given as part of New Zealand’s free childhood immunisation programme.

All year 8 students will be given a consent form to take home which includes detailed information about the immunisation. Please complete the consent form, either consenting or declining to the school based immunisation programme, and return the form to school before Friday February 16th. For more information:www.health.govt.nz/hpvcontact the HPV Immunisation Team at WellSouth (03)214 6436, 0800 800 249 or [email protected]

Cars, Use of Crossing and ParkingPlease exercise consideration when dropping off and picking up students on both Layard Street and Queens Drive and do not park, even temporarily, over our neighbours’ driveways. It would be appreciated if parents would refrain from driving onto the school grounds from Layard Street (in the front of the office) to drop their children at school. This is a driveway and staff parking, and we are concerned that the congestion and confusion this can cause may lead to an accident. Students are not to be on the school grounds before 8.20am. Supervision is not available and early arrival is therefore a safety risk.

Sun SafetyTo protect faces against the summer sun, students may wear plain white caps or hats when outside during summer. They are not to be worn in class and must have the name written on the inside. Junior Campus – we encourage students to bring their own sunscreen and we also have it available at the school office.

Health NurseThe Health Nurse, Mrs Lyn Sanderson, will be available for students during the year. If you have any concerns please phone the school office and we will arrange for Mrs Sanderson to contact you. If students wish to see the Health Nurse they are able to make an appointment by placing a request in the green post box in the office foyer.

Oral Communication Programme Junior CampusThe Oral Communication programme provides children with an opportunity to develop their speaking and listening skills and their drama and performance skills. It is also great for increasing self-confidence and public speaking skills. Pupils work to-wards gaining New Zealand Speech Board qualifications. An external assessor will conduct assessments towards the end of Term 2.Pupils gain a badge and are given a detailed report on their performance.

Lessons are held on Wednesdays, 1.40pm - 2.25pm in the GATE room.Enrolment forms and further information is available from the school office. The cost for the assessment is $53. This will need be paid to the school office, (please do not leave money in the GATE room) by Wednesday 20 February, if your child is go-ing to participate in the programme. Please contact Mrs Mika if you require any further assistance [email protected]

New Zealand Speech Board Oral Communication Assessments took place on Thursday 6 December, 2018 with Mrs Treweek as the assessor.

Congratulations to the following students on their results. Badges have arrived and can be collected from Mrs Mika. (Year 9 badges will be sent

Before School Maths classes start for two mornings per week in Week 5. This is an individualised programme, catering for extension as well as support. Students can attend as they need, not necessarily every session. If you would like to be involved as “parent help” please come along. Start date and days to be advised.

Before School Maths

Junior Campus AthleticsThe Junior Campus athletics sports will be held on Tuesday 5 March at Surrey Park from 9am to approximately 2.30pm. As full school participation is expected, a note explaining non-participation must be sent to the child’s classroom teacher before the day. Athletics day requires a lot of organisation and parent/caregiver helpers would be greatly appreciated. If you can help, please advise your child’s teacher either by note or in their diary. You do not need to have previous experience in helping with athletics to be a valuable helper on the day. Any questions please contact the school.

We invite you to “Meet the Teacher” afternoons on Tuesday 12th February at 4pm for Year 7 and Thursday 14th February at 4pm for Year 8. Meetings start in the Hall at 4pm followed by a half hour session in your child’s homeroom. Come along and meet your child’s teacher, learn about school programmes and systems, and meet the parents and caregivers in your child’s class. There will be meetings for parents interested in being camp volunteers “mums” and “dads” straight after the Meet the Teacher afternoon in the hall at 4.45pm.

Junior Campus Meet the Teacher

Information regarding trials, games times, draw, etc. is posted on the sports notice board in Mrs Smith’s office window (on the east side of the hall). Students are also reminded to check the daily notices for information regarding sports being offered by the school, trial times and practices. Mrs Smith, Sports Coordinator, has permission slips for sports.

Sports TeamsJunior Sports AcademyAt the Junior Campus we support talented sports performers by providing opportunities that focus on developing five key abilities, physical, thinking, social, personal and creative. We aim to establish targets for gifted and talented athletes and provide opportunities to develop self-management and discipline.Students have the opportunity to be with other like-minded, skilled sportspeople and enjoy a wide range of activities. The Multi Skilled Sports Academy in 2019 will be split into two 16 week blocks; Intake 1 and Intake 2, which will cater for up to 24 students in total.Sessions are held on Thursday mornings from 10.30 am – 12.05 pm, this allows students to be back in time for assembly. The programme offers a wide range of different activities such as team building, sports psychology, nutrition and cross training opportunities such as spin, crossfit, circuits and pilates sessions. The subsidised cost of $55 assists in covering the costs of activities involving specialist classes and guest speakers. Selection CriteriaThis programme is designed for students who have achieved representative honours at provincial level or higher, and show the ability to take on new advice. All students who wish to be considered for the programme must fill in an application form outlining their sporting achievements. Applications will be considered and intake places will be offered to students who meet the criteria.Application forms are available from the Junior Campus Office and are due in by Tuesday 19 February(9am, to the Office). Please contact Mrs Mika if you require any further information.
