New Course: Book Production Winter, Thursdays 1:30-3:50pm ~ Dr. Miriam Jones English 3713: Special Topics: Book Production is a new senior seminar in an area foundational to the English discipline: print culture. Or textual studies, or the history of the book; there are various names and approaches but they all share a common focus: the book as a material object. In this course, each of you is going to make your own book. As you move through that process over the term, you will learn about the history of western book production, from medieval manuscripts to eBooks. You will learn about technologies of book production and how those technologies shape, and are shaped by, the texts being produced. You will be introduced to disciplines or sub-disciplines such as bibliography and book conservation. This is a hands-on course. We will read, write, and talk, but we will also make things. We will make ink, out of oak galls and out of walnuts. We will write with goose quills, on parchment as well as rag paper. We will learn some basic calligraphy. And we will make books. Every attempt will be made to keep the costs of course readings minimal, but there will be a materials fee, yet to be determined but not in excess of the cost of textbooks for the average literature course (probably considerably less). If this presents difficulties, contact the instructor. Suitable for English majors as well as students from elsewhere, particularly CS or History. Prerequisites: 9 ch LL English or permission of the instructor. For further information, visit miriamjones.ca or email [email protected]
