Meet the NV Board President — Jeremy Novak

Communications Coordinator — Riya Mukhopadhyay

2nd Vice President — Sana Kamboj

1st Vice President — Matt Grimm

Hi, I'm Jeremy Novak. I'm a senior at Sage Ridge School, and I've been to 8

JCL conventions in both Nevada and California. I am the president of the

NVJCL board, meaning I run board meetings, keep in contact with NVJCL

chapters, and make sure the board is fulfilling its duty. Previously on the board,

I was the Webmaster. Some other facts about me: my favorite Latin word is

appropinquantur, my favorite genre of music is EDM, and I am very involved

in theatre at my school.

My name is Matt Grimm and I am a senior at Sage Ridge! I am currently your

NVJCL 1st Vice President! My main job is to spread the word of the JCL and

to get schools that have Latin to be active participants in the JCL. I have been

in the JCL for 6 years now and I have loved every year of it. Some fun facts

about me are.... My favorite slime punk band is Lumpy and the Dumpers, I

am a firm believer in the theory of "Pugs not Drugs", and my favorite hobbies

are giving people the finger while driving and putting off homework.

Salve! I'm Sana Kamboj, and I'm a junior at The Meadows School. I'm ecstatic

to be your 2nd VP for the 2015-2016 JCL year! As 2nd VP, it's my job to

organize both JCL Spirit and philanthropy projects. I've been in Latin for 5

years, and in JCL for 4, and it has been indubitably the best decision I have

ever made. I adore anything and everything classics related, and I've got a spe-

cial fondness for Vergil. When not doing Classics Things, I can be found

volunteering at the animal shelter, selling Girl Scout cookies, and passionately

practicing ballroom dance for worryingly long periods of time.

Salve! I'm Riya, and I'm a senior at The Meadows School. I have been part of

the JCL for 6 years and enjoy every part of it. I have been to 8 conventions,

and my favorite part of convention is always Certamen! I love reading, listening

to music, and drawing when I have time. As NVJCL Communications

Coordinator, it is my job to take the minutes of each meeting and send them

out to the other officers so that they know their upcoming tasks. Additionally,

I edit and update the official NVJCL website.

Parliamentarian — Michael Interlicchio

Editor — Jasmine Brazelton

Historian — Ana Ohnersorgen

State Co-Chairs —

Ashley Zahn

Salve! I'm Michael Interlicchio, and I am your new 2015-2016

NVJCL Parliamentarian. I have stepped in for Amanda, due to her recent

election as a national officer, but I can assure you that will bring the same pas-

sion and dedication to the position as she did. I am a senior at Liberty

High School and have been part of the JCL for three years. I plan to fulfill all

my duties as parliamentarian, including: understanding the constitution and

making any necessary amendments to it. My favorite activity at convention is the

nominations committee. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, socializing, and

shopping.

My name is Jasmine, and I'm the NVJCL Editor. I am a sophomore at Sage

Ridge School and enter in fourth year of being a JCL member. I have attended

6 JCL conventions so far, and I plan on going to many more! As Editor, I write

the Nevada JCL Torch newsletter, which comes out a couple times a year. It

includes information about each Nevada delegation and recent and upcoming

JCL events. In addition to JCL, I also participate in theatre, debate, and

dance.

Hello! My name is Ana, and I am the NVJCL historian. This means that I col-

lect pictures of all the NVJCL events from the past year and put them together

in a digital scrapbook to be presented at Nationals. I am a sophomore at Sage

Ridge and this will be my fourth year in the JCL. Outside of the JCL, I partici-

pate in theater and other nerdy activities.

This is my fourth year in NVJCL. I work with my awesome co-chair

to oversee the activities of the Nevada chapters. When I’m not

making AP Latin students’ lives miserable, I enjoy Starbucks and

hiking with my husband and dog.

Courtney Kiely This is my eighth year as a JCL Sponsor and my eleventh as an

American Classical League Member. As state co-chair, I help to

oversee state activities and make sure that all Nevada chapters are in

good standing. I love the Florida Gators, road biking, chocolate,

and working out…mostly because I love chocolate.

Let’s Be Conventional Nationals was a blast this year! Over a thousand delegates from across the US convened at Trinity University in

San Antonio, TX—the site of the first JCL convention ever!—to celebrate the Classics for one amazing week.

This year’s theme was “tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito” (yield not to misfortunes, but advance all the

more boldly against them), and the Nevada delegation embodied this well. Despite an unfortunately small group,

we placed in multiple events and even got second for Small School Spirit! Everyone had a great time, whether

they spent convention coming up with new spirit chants, dressing up for the costume contests, or creating acts for

That’s Entertainment. Next year’s National Convention will be held at Indiana University with the theme “ubi

concordia, ibi victoria” (When there is unity, there is victory) from July 25 to 30. For those of you who like to

start prepping your outfits early, the boys’ costume character is Odysseus, the girls’ is Calypso, and the couples’

costumes are Scylla and Charybdis (that will be interesting). It’s gonna be time to grab those convention spots

soon. We hope to see you there!

NV Has a National Officer! Amanda Hansen has been elected to the NJCL Board! We’re pretty

excited to see Nevada getting some representation on a national

level, but this also means that she can no longer be NVJCL

Parliamentarian. Fortunately, Michael Interlicchio stepped in to fill

her position, and the Nevada Board is as awesome as ever.

Q: Amanda, how does it feel to be elected as a National officer after

serving on a state board in the past?

A: I am so elated to have this opportunity to be a national officer. It

involves significantly more work than serving on state board, but my

time on the Nevada one gave me the preparation that I needed.

Convention Overview Day 1

JCLers from across the US were warmly welcomed onto Trinity

University’s Campus by Texas JCL delegates. Everyone soon realized

they were in for a week in the sweltering heat, but the JCL experience

would make it all worth it. A successful first General Assembly was

held, and introductions (one from Alvin Dungan, the first NJCL

President ever), welcomes, and orientation were given. Lots of students

participated in the first NJCL scavenger hunt, while others chose

Olympika Swimming. The first test session happened after dinner, and

then delegates dressed up as Phaethon and Circe for the Costume Contest. That night people let out their start-of

-convention excitement at the “Houston, We Have a Dance Floor” dance and shopped at the Bazaar!

Day 2

Tuesday was off to a great start with Olympika Track, English Oratory, and Ludi Chess. Everyone showed off

their state pride for the Old Western Classics spirit day. This year, Nevada and Arizona once again teamed up to

create the unstoppable Nevona delegation. Roll call at General Assembly was interesting as ever , and Christian

and Lucas represented Nevada well. Test sessions and Certamen went into full swing and everyone began to gear

up for Ludi. In the evening, NomCom, Ludi Basketball, and Dramatic Interpretation occupied center stage

before the second dance (Lasso the JCLove) ended the night.

Day 3

Wednesday’s spirit day was “Lone Star-struck by Latin” (very clever,

NJCL). California officially took the lead in Certamen, but other states’

delegates would win the marathon and Impromptu Art. Candidates gave

their speeches at GA. That night, in addition to the “These Boots Were

Made for Dancin’” dance, the Roman Murder Mystery became a highlight

of NJCL evening activities.

Day 4

On Thursday, everyone gathered for the Candidates’ Open Forum and then to elect their new national officers,

but the stress of elections was quickly forgotten with the Throwback Thursday spirit day. Everyone enjoyed a

fiesta-themed dinner, and then the beloved NJCL talent show, That’s Entertainment, took place. This year

featured acts with everything from Roman-themed songs to Irish dance and ballet to the classic NJCL board

parody. SCL and the slashers once again delivered with yet another famously incoherent skit.

Day 5

The much-anticipated Certamen finals took place, with Florida winning

overall. The Tiber Riverwalk procession to GA was a passionate one, and

once everyone was inside the new National officers were inaugurated. After

the traditional Old Rome Banquet, everyone dressed up for the “Save the

Last Square Dance for Me!” dance. The last night of convention ended on a

fantastic (but heavy-hearted) note.

Highlight of the 2015 NJCL Convention?

Meeting all those amazing people from all over the country! And Spirit,

of course. :) - Sana Kamboj

For me, the highlight of the 2015 NJCL Convention was each night's

state fellowship meeting shared with the Arizona delegation because

they all were so entertaining. - Amanda Hansen

My favorite moment was running across That’s Entertainment

screaming as the Susan SheareRAWRsaurus escaped from containment

in the Jurassic World skit. Being a slasher meant I was able to

participate in That’s Entertainment and it was so much fun to do it! -

Lizzy Noone

Which spirit day was your favorite?

Throwback Thursday! - Sana Kamboj

Throwback Thursday #purpleandgold was my favorite spirit day.

- Amanda Hansen

My favorite spirit day was Friday, where we wear our togas for the Roman Procession. Who doesn’t want to wear

a toga and run around screaming? - Lizzy Noone

What's your favorite part of the NV chapter's spirit?

Teaching state cheers to new NV delegates and our Arizona amici! -

Sana Kamboj

My favorite part of this year's spirit was how we teamed up with Arizona

and did some call and response cheers with them. - Amanda Hansen

My favorite part was when we started with the Latin chants. Garvey and

Zahn translated two chants into Latin one night and we memorized

them on top of the next day’s spirit chants, which was cool. - Lizzy

Noone

What was your favorite organized event from convention?

Aside from Spirit, I actually really enjoyed the tests. - Sana Kamboj

The colloquium given regarding the ancient roots of astronomy. -

Amanda Hansen

Favorite? That’s hard to answer. I love being in NJCL Choir. That’s

Entertainment was as awesome as ever. Learning what SCL did was also

really fun. There are just too many things to pick my favorite. - Lizzy

Noone

Questions & Answers Here’s what the Nevada delegates have to say about Nationals:

What is one JCL achievement, whether it's Nevada's or just your own, that you are most proud of?

Winning second place for small state spirit! - Sana Kamboj

The one JCL achievement I am most proud of is being elected to national office. - Amanda Hansen

I’m proud that Nevada and Arizona managed to get two days where we won 1st in spirit, even though we got

2nd overall spirit. - Lizzy Noone

If you've gone to past NJCL conventions, which one was your favorite?

This was the first Nationals I've been to, but definitely not the last. - Sana Kamboj

I have been to UNLV, Emory, and Trinity, and even though all three have been wonderful, I think this year's

was fantastic. - Amanda Hansen

I’ve been to two other conventions besides this past one: UNLV and Emory. My favorite was UNLV just be-

cause it was my first convention and it was within my hometown. - Lizzy Noone

What do you want to say to NVJCL members who haven't been to a National convention yet?

Request your convention packet for 2016 as soon as it's available. You will not regret it! :) - Sana Kamboj

Go. It is fun. You learn more Latin. You meet kind, exceptional people. You get to spend a week at a great uni-

versity. It's just enjoyable in every way possible. - Amanda Hansen

To any NVJCLer who isn’t sure about going to Nationals. JUST DO IT! Even at state convention, you can’t get

the full idea of how much this organization means to people. Once you step on to the campus nationals is being

held on, you realize what this is all about. There isn’t extra credit, any obligation to go, or even peer pressure to

go. You realize that JCL is filled with loving people and kind faces ready to promote your love of Latin, the clas-

sics, JCL. You only realize how amazing being at nationals is once you’ve experienced it yourself. - Lizzy Noone

Fall JCL Events The Meadows School is not using the JCL off-season as leisure time. This fall, they hosted a Ludi Romani for

the Southern Nevada schools, which they paired with a community service project. In addition to that, all

throughout the month of October JCLers are teaming up with local libraries in the Vegas area to teach children

about Greco-Roman mythology—gotta instill the love of the Classics early on! Later in the season Meadows’ JCL

will likely organize some book drives as well.

Sage Ridge School has been busy too. In mid-October they participated in a “zombie run” to benefit Step 2, a

Northern Nevada organization dedicated to helping women and children get back on their feet while

overcoming addiction and poverty. Students (and our state chairs!) dressed up as zombies and chase down run-

ners in the charity race. The middle school JCL club is also making posters in Latin to cheer on sports teams

and give the school some classical spirit.

State 2016 The 2015-2016 NVJCL Convention will be hosted Liberty High School in Las Vegas from February 26 to 28.

As always, it’s going to have killer tests, some pretty competitive certamen, lots of spirit, impressive art and

models, and super fun activities (although this year we’re going to miss out on a snowball fight). The next issue of

the Torch will have all the details!
