It’s the level of detail that sets The Big Mouth apart, though. Special aprons are supplied so you don’t mess on your clothes. There are dinky water glasses that are an unusual shape. And there are creative cocktails with intriguing names such as The Wet Mouth Mojito with rum, lime, raspberry jam, bitters and mint, and The Big Mouth Mary – a traditional Bloody Mary turned on its head by using gin instead of vodka.

It’s hard to know where to start when describing our recent meal at new brasserie The Big Mouth on Nelson
Mandela Square. The food, the decor, the service − everything is exceptional.
For starters, there’s the ambience as you gaze on the square – the bronze statue of our most famous president overlooks the fountain shooting up streams of water while tourists snap a picture or two. Deals are signed, socialites are seen and there’s a general air of moving and shaking about the place.
Then there’s the decor. Designed by Studio Parkington in conjunction with Thought Fox Creative, tones of black, white and blue are stylishly used throughout including the chequered floor, comfortable leather booths, a white marble sushi bar, and black steel shopfronts.
The Big Mouth positions itself as a sushi and grill restaurant, but seafood of all types is the star here. From the mouthwatering salmon tacos we had as starters to the grilled kingklip with crispy leeks and the delicious prawn curry that were our mains, it’ll be hard for you to choose from the extensive menu.
One of my fellow guests had the seafood pot which was packed with lobster tails, calamari, mussels, prawns, white fish, roasted garlic and fresh cream – he declared it delicious. The pot was served with the crispiest of chips, perfectly seasoned and served in a stainless steel bucket. The green table salad with mixed lettuce, avocado, peas, edamame beans and Parmesan shavings was a delight all on its own, as was the ice-cream sandwich

Tracking Christmas trends for the southern hemisphere can be a strange process. While in
the world of trend research we often take direction from big, global trade shows like Christmasworld in Germany, the focus there is understandably on a traditional, Eurocentric celebration. Even though South Africans like a bit of classic decor, snowflakes and reindeers are sometimes an odd addition to local homes. Recently, however, we’re seeing designers at these shows take a new look at the season with products and decor that remix traditional staples for a modern home.
One standout must-have from Christmasworld earlier this year was the flat Christmas tree. Whether rustic or refined, these graphic interpretations of traditional decor are ideal alternatives for people who either don’t have the

Festive feelroom for real trees, or are looking for a more contemporary take on the season. Local brands doing this include Designwerkstatt, with its 2-D, laser-cut trees available on hellopretty.co.za.
At the show, these trees often took the form of advent calendars too – often with more adult treats than the traditional chocolates. Single malt whiskies and liqueurs were common additions to the calendars at the show, but versions with contents such as tea, beauty products and biscuits were also seen.
While there will always be a place for classic decor, these kinds of updates are always interesting. They show an understanding that people’s homes have changed – often getting smaller – and ultimately that people don’t suspend their taste in decor just for the festive season.

Local gin producers are changing the way you drink a G&T
G in is no longer just for the blue-rinse brigade. A slew of local distilleries are uplifting
this traditionally old-fashioned spirit by doing things differently, which is helping to attract a younger, trendier market.
Lorna Scott, founder and owner, Inverroche Distillery in Stilbaai in the Western Cape, says that since the distillery’s inception in December 2011 sales have grown exponentially. “We started off selling fewer than 100 bottles in our first month of production, and four years later we’re selling between 8,000 and 10,000 units a month.”
Lorna agrees that a gin revival is taking place globally and that South Africa is no exception. She believes that this is largely due to the worldwide re-emergence of the cocktail culture. “Many new gin bars are opening across South Africa and the cocktail hour is alive with local gins all taking pride of place,” says Lorna.

• Use a stick of cucumber instead
of a wedge of lemon in your G&T.
• Choose soda instead of tonic to
bring out the flavour of the gin.

Inverroche gin comes in three different flavours – classic, verdant, and amber – each with its own distinct flavour profile that appeals to different palates. Eighty-five percent of Inverroche gin is sold locally and the remaining 15% is exported to 13 countries around the world. “The export market’s love for our fynbos-infused gin is growing daily and we are constantly inundated with enquiries,” says Lorna.
Lucy Beard from Hope on Hopkins Distillery, a new, local gin brand, was living and working in London and watched the rise of several craft distilleries there with interest. After spending time travelling in Spain, where gin and gin bars are extremely popular, the seed to start her own distillery in Salt River, Cape Town, was planted. “We launched our gin in Joburg at the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair in early October and did far better than anticipated,” she says. The South African-inspired Salt River Gin, made with Western Cape botanicals, was sold out a day and a half before the end of the show.
More international gin brands are arriving in South Africa regularly. KWV, a larger local brand, recently launched its Cruxland Gin. “People are becoming increasingly aware that
no two gins are the same − gin is really having a revolution here, and gin sales are on the increase,” says Lucy.

Locals and visitors alike will know Four Seasons Hotel (formerly The Westcliff ) in Joburg’s leafiest
suburb, Westcliff, as the pinnacle of luxury. The famous sunsets over the urban forest of Joburg (home to six million trees) have always been a favourite view for sundowners in the city, but now that the hotel has had a facelift, things have been taken up a notch. Although perhaps “facelift” is too minor a term for the $65m renovations that closed the hotel for a year and a half and let it emerge like a phoenix from the ashes.
Now part of the Canadian Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts group, the former Westcliff hotel feels like a special occasion from the moment you step into the reception area, but is welcoming enough for locals to pop into the Flames restaurant for lunch or drinks on a regular basis – some as often as every week. It’s not only the views that make it such a treat, although breakfasting with the whole of Joburg laid out in front of you, does make you feel like you can achieve pretty much anything with your day. It’s the whole atmosphere that sets this hotel apart. Built as a hillside village with no cars allowed into the guest area, and golf buggies ferrying guests from reception to their rooms and the restaurants, there are courtyards, fountains and gardens interspersed between the beautiful rooms, making it eminently walkable (as long as you don’t mind a bit of an uphill climb).
The rooms themselves are just the right balance of luxe and comfortable – the kind of place you can happily settle into for a few days knowing that your every need will be taken care of. But even for those who aren’t lucky enough to stay, there are a number of ways to experience this most fabulous of South African villages.
Afternoon tea has just been launched and offers a selection of sweet and savoury delicacies served at the View restaurant (along with some more of those amazing views). I am still thinking about the pistachio and strawberry tart and the caramelised popcorn eclairs… For those with less of a sweet tooth, the festive season brings an oyster and bubbly special, best enjoyed as the sun sinks at the end of a hot summer’s day, and there are any number of fabulous cocktails to enjoy any day of the week (I particularly recommend the margarita – shaken, not frozen).
Spend a day at the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff and you may well feel as if you’ve been transported into a different world, where luxe is the order of the day. It’s a world I would happily spend more time in.

End-of-year property salesWith most people heading off on holiday, property professionals estimate fewer sales this time of year

With the festive season imminent and most people taking a break soon, property
purchasing begins to slow down. Property professionals estimate that over the December holidays sales of properties across South Africa drop by as much as half the usual amount.
Herschel Jawitz, CEO, Jawitz Properties, says fewer properties (by as much as 70% less in some areas), are sold over the holiday season across the country. He says December should be no better or worse than other times of the year to buy properties, but because many people take time off work to relax, there’s less interest in getting involved in the house-buying process.
“While there may be a perception that more holiday homes are bought at the coast during December, many buyers also have a perception that it is not a good time to buy as sellers at the coast ask higher prices than in off-season months. Potential buyers may get caught in the holiday hype and view properties at the coast in December, but many wait until after the festive season to buy,” says Jawitz.Many law firms close over the holidays delaying processing and transfer of property. However, it has been found that some buyers may still buy in December using year-end bonuses towards deposits, he says.
Berry Everitt, Group CEO, Chas Everitt International Property Group, says in December the volume of sales countrywide is usually around 50% of the volume in other months and mostly primary homes in major metropolitan areas are bought.
He says it’s a good time to buy these properties because individuals selling in December are generally serious about concluding a transaction as they may be relocating in January
or by financial year end, and tend to be more willing to negotiate.
Everitt says the property market is slower in December but buyers are more likely to have less competition and view homes in a relaxed holiday atmosphere. However, he says they may not have as many homes to choose from because owners who don’t urgently need to sell, may list their home only in January after their own holidays.
“Many people also prefer to wait for the new year before buying a property to see whether they get a salary increase and for regular household expenses such as insurance, medical aid and school fees to take place. These increases, and paying off holiday debt, may affect purchasing decisions,” says Everitt.
There’s also a change in property listings and search dynamics. “The real estate market is generally quiet in December from a buying and selling perspective with most estate agencies shut from mid-December. People are either away on vacation or enjoying quality time with family, so put off buying or selling until the new year,” Simon Bray, CEO, Private Property, says.

To renovate or not? In an increasingly competitive
Joburg housing market and with commuter costs escalating, is
it worth spending less on an older property in a good area and then renovating it, rather than buying a more up-market house elsewhere? According to Tony Clarke, MD, Rawson Property Group, the answer is yes – especially if you buy the house at a good price in a great location.
“Renovating is a way of getting more house for a limited budget, or being able to afford to live in an up-and-coming area, while speculators see it as an opportunity to make a profit,” Clarke says of the buy-to-restore trend. However, he warns that it’s important that buyers choose the right house to restore. “The broad rule here is to look for a house where any alterations that are necessary can be made within the existing exterior walls, as exterior additions are likely to push up the cost unjustifiably,” he says.

and Midrand, says that investing in renovations on a well-situated home is rarely a waste of money, and makes your living environment more comfortable. He also says it helps to make the property more attractive to future buyers. “Most buyers appreciate modern kitchens and bathrooms, so these can be particularly important to renovate in an older property,” he says.
However, Tony Ketcher, principal, Seeff Randburg, advises against major expenditure if you’re thinking of selling, saying that sellers should instead use these funds to invest in the next property they buy. He does recommend, though, that sellers do basic fixes like painting, cleaning carpets and

fixing broken gutters. “When a house looks shoddy, in the buyer’s mind the cost to repair is high and they will negotiate a price down to cover that perceived cost,” he says.

Car and household insuranceCheck the terms of your policy to make sure that you have informed your insurer of all the security features of your home. Also make sure that your car is roadworthy. If you have an accident and the insurer can show that the tyres were too worn or the windscreen wipers didn’t work, they may have grounds not to pay out.
WillsIn the worst-case scenario, do you have a will in place that will protect your family? Talk to a professional estate planner about what needs to go into your will, how your assets will be distributed, and what you can do to reduce fees and duties. Four heritage buildings in the Joburg CBD are being redeveloped as new chambers for the next generation of legal professionals
Property development company Propertuity has purchased four historical buildings in
the Joburg CBD to convert into legal chambers. The buildings are located at 66 to 72 Pritchard Street, a block away from the high court, and will provide office space for a new generation of legal professionals. When complete, the R72m project will be known as the Chambers of Change.
The exterior of the four heritage buildings – Cuthberts Building, Hilson House, The Royalty, and Dunvegan Chambers – will be preserved and restored, while the interior will be divided into smaller spaces for around 200 legal professionals. There will also be a restaurant on the first floor and a bar on the roof.
“We are aiming to attract advocates who are looking for high-quality office space a block away from the high court,” says Jonathan Liebmann, founder and CEO, Propertuity.
“We already have some tenants in mind, but will start marketing and

placing tenants closer to completion, which is scheduled for mid-2016.”
Liebmann says that Propertuity is encouraged by and committed to the development of the inner city. “It is natural for the inner city to regenerate as it’s the most central location and has the best infrastructure, so it’s only a matter of time before it becomes the most prime property again. These buildings are right in the middle of the inner city in an area that has seen billions of upgrades happen over the last 10 years, so values have improved significantly.”
The spaces will feature detailed attention to security and design, and will have high-end communal areas including boardrooms, rooftop restaurants and a spa, intended to make them desirable to the legal community.
It is hoped that these new buildings and facilities will be part of a larger inner-city regeneration, similar to what has been observed in the nearby Maboneng precinct.

While the reappointment of Pravin Gordhan as Minister of Finance is welcome news, it will have little or no near-term impact on the current steady shift in South Africa’s homes sector from a sellers’ to a buyers’ market.Gordhan’s return to the critically important finance portfolio comes at a time when the country’s key economic indicators are on the slide. Business confidence is now at a 22-year low, and our global investment rating sits at, or close to, junk level.It is against this background that South African residential property is now firmly into transition – and seems set to remain there well into 2016.Buyers are becoming increasingly aware of this and therefore no longer believe that if they don’t transact now they will miss the boat. They know full well they can bide their time.When the market is buoyant, success is relatively easily achieved by sellers. They simply put their properties on the market with instructions to multiple agents to “do their thing” in what is effectively a free-for-all sales effort. The agents apply conventional marketing by advertising on digital portals, in print and other media. Buyers then naturally gravitate towards them, and show day offers flow freely as a result.
Rifle shot strategy On the flipside, when the market is in a downward transition, such as now, buyers tend not to respond to conventional marketing. This requires a different approach by agents – a revised formula of marketing activity – in order to secure and seal best-practice sales at best price. It is at this point that the benefit of sole mandate selling manifests most profoundly. It enables the agent to devote more time and effort than normal into identifying, targeting and pursuing buyers who are not just able to transact but also those that need to transact.Put another way, it is rifle shot rather than shotgun marketing that reaps results in a downmarket. Good agents are aware of this. They have a canny, almost light bulb, knack for matching buyers to sole mandate homes. To ensure that marketing momentum is sustained, and energy levels remain high, sole mandates should have service notice clauses of a minimum of four weeks.Top performing agents should have no qualms about operating on this basis in the current – or any other – market climate.
