Notre Dame Middle School Quiz Bowl teams competes in National Academic Championship.

As the winners of the 2013 Scioto County Quiz Bowl Championship, the Notre Dame Middle School Quiz Bowl team was invited to compete in the National Academic Championship in Washington, D.C. The National Academic Championship is a competition for high school level and junior level teams. Therefore, Notre Dame was able to create a nationals team by combining members of the middle school and junior high teams.

Coaches Amanda Jones and Dr. Raj Kataria selected students based on their past performances in quiz bowl as well as their

academic success. Eight students were selected to join the team. They are Rohit Kataria (6th), Emma Madden (6th), Olivia Grace Smith (6th), Paetyn Collins (6th), Graceann Beckett (6th), Connor Madden (8th), Joseph Beckett (8th), and Drew Smith (9th).

Thanks to generous sponsors, the Notre Dame National Junior Quiz Bowl team traveled to Washington, D.C. on May 30th to compete in the 3 day event. The format for this event is much different than that of regular quiz bowl so the team spent weeks studying and learning the new format. The competition focuses on academic information rather than trivia or popular culture and the contest follows a four-quarter format much like the game show, Jeopardy.

The Notre Dame team performed well in six preliminary games, missing the finals by only 15 points. The team hopes to compete again next year and walk away with the title of National Academic Champions.

The local Wendy’s honored 59 student-athletes from 32 school districts. The students were chosen as their school’s winners of the Wendy’s High School Heisman. Students chosen from Notre Dame High School were Katie Stevenson and Jack Kayser. Scott Schmidt, a 1971 graduate of Notre Dame High School and franchise owner of several Wendy’s and other restaurants throughout Ohio and West Virginia, said a student has to meet certain qualifications to be named a Heisman winner. “To be

chosen as a Wendy’s High School Heisman recipient you have to be a scholar, you have to be a good citizen, and you have to participate in athletics. “ Schmidt said.

Notre Dame High School wins 2014 Regional Science Bowl - Advances to Washington D.C.

Marchyn Family Donation

The South Central Ohio Regional Science Bowl, sponsored by the Department of Energy and Fluor B&W Portsmouth, held on March 7, with the Notre Dame Titans cleaning out the competition. More than 130 students gathered and were spread out between 27 teams from 16 different high schools in the southern Ohio region, in the end, only the 5 Titans remained.

What may seem to be like the underdog story in every movie, with every cliché intact, the Titans were not considered to be the possible victors as the matches began early Friday morning. The day started off with random pool drawings and matches to determine the point tallies of each team. They would then place teams in orders of their tally and competition level. Notre Dame lost every match and was placed in 24th. As the matches began, the team pushed

forward and beat every opponent, including 1st team Portsmouth High School. Portsmouth made it to the final round, but lost to Notre Dame before the semi-finals.

What makes the story even more surprising and exciting, was the final round of the evening, where the Titans were neck-to-neck with Chillicothe High School for not one tiebreaker challenge, but two.

South Central Ohio Regional Science Bowl Coordinator, Greg Simonton stated that the final rounds between the two teams were nail biting and just as exciting as any football game could be.

“I think they’ll be great representatives of the region and on behalf of the local DOE (Department of Energy) site, we can’t be any more proud of all of the kids, but especially with how Notre Dame came back at the end. I think their comeback will serve them well when they get to nationals, because they know how to adjust,” Simonton said.

With the very last second on the clock, Notre Dame Science Bowl Captain, Will Haney, hit his buzzer and not only answered the question, earning them 4 points, but got the bonus question through what he called process of elimination, which is what he says he learned from his previous year’s experience in the Science Bowl.

Dr. Duane and Rachel Marchyn recently made a donation to Notre Dame High School to enable Mr. Daniel Sand to purchase microscopes for his classroom. Mr. Sand, who teaches 7th Grade Integrated Science, 10th Grade Biology and 11th and 12th Human Anatomy and Physiology at the high school, was very excited to be able to purchase the microscopes for his classrooms. He is using the microscopes to investigate the microscopic world by allowing the students to view a drop of pond water to see the vast amount of microorganisms that inhabit and play an important role in their respective environment. They are also being used to view cells and various types of tissue as well as to explore close-up views of animals such as flies and ants.Mr. Sand states “The donation of the new microscopes is the first step in bringing our science program into the 21st century with current technology. Students who choose to pursue higher institutions of learning will be able to effectively use a microscope in their college lab setting. Their wireless power capability is accommodating to a general education classroom setting and they provide a safer learning environment for students by avoiding power cords running throughout the room.” The Notre Dame Schools are very grateful to Dr. and Mrs. Marchyn for their generous donation.

UCAN Scholarship awarded to 2014 Graduates. In the fall of 2007, the Scioto Foundation established the University College Access Network to help ensure that every student in Scioto County can afford to attend college. Notre Dame Schools decided to participate in this project along with 10 other schools in Scioto County. The Scioto Foundation pledged a one to one match for up to $10,000 per year. If we could raise $10,000 per year for five years with their match we would have a $100,000 endowment from which to draw returns for an annual scholarship. We assembled a committee to brainstorm ways to raise the money, keeping in mind that we didn’t want to impact our Annual Fund Drive. One of the members of that committee decided that he wanted to make a gift to the school, a gift that would have significant impact on the lives of our students for years to come. Mr. Henry Oberling and his wife, Anne generously decided to fund the entire UCAN endowment, pledging $10,000 per year for five years. By establishing this endowment fund they are ensuring that our students have the resources they need to help fund a college education. We are very grateful for this gift and the commitment to our schools it represents. At graduation ceremonies on May 25th, Mr. Oberling and his wife Anne presented the UCAN/Oberling Family Scholarship in the amount of $2,584.00 to Leah Craig and Michael Medley. Leah, the daughter of Scott and Kandi Craig plans to attend Miami University. Michael, the son of Todd and Mery Medley, plans to attend Shawnee University.

The recipient of the award is nominated by the seniors to honor the person who was most influential in their lives during their years in Notre Dame Schools. After the nominations are received, a committee comprised of school board members vote on the person they feel best meets the criteria of the award. 7 Tradition

As followers of Christ, we, much more than others, believe that earthly treasures are temporary. Just as Christians are expected to be good stewards of God’s gifts here on earth, we should also have a plan for our estate when we leave this world. As a supporter of Notre Dame Schools, we invite you to remember the schools when doing your estate planning. You may have life insurance policies, stocks, jewelry, real estate or collectibles that could benefit our schools. Reportedly when one of the richest men in America died, John Rockefeller, someone asked his accountant, “How much money did he leave?” The reply was “He left all of it.” We cannot take it with us but we can continue to benefit the causes we supported that were important to us, even after we have left this world.

15 Columbus Diocese seminarians, priests, and deacons rode their bikes 30-50 miles a day through the Diocese starting at St. Andrew School in Upper Arlington, Ohio on May 12 and finishing at the Notre Dame Schools in Portsmouth, Ohio on May 16. Kyle Tennant, a 2007 graduate of Notre Dame High School was one of the seminarians who participated in the bike tour. They are reaching out to spread the message of living the life you’re called to live. The seminarians enjoy this annual event of fellowship, evangelization, the challenge of cycling, and the opportunity to spend time talking about vocations with youth, pastors and parishioners in the diocese. The annual Seekholiness Bike Tour is sponsored by the Diocesan Vocations Office, The Catholic Foundation and Face Forward Connecting Catholic Youth on Facebook.
