Ushering in a new era.

New Indoor Athletic Complex Underway

When change is inevitable, the results may be fruitful.Over the summer, the gymnasium at Notre Dame High School received a much-needed makeover to the tune of approximately $120,000. Through financial and material donations by private backers and the Columbus Diocese that totaled $150,000, patrons can witness a newly-renovated gymnasium, foyer and restrooms during Titan home athletic contests.“Folks are very, very excited here,” Notre Dame Athletic Director Mike Sammons said in an interview before the start of the fall sports season. “It was pretty much done all through donations. We didn’t know how much it was going to cost.”Since 1952, Notre Dame basketball and volleyball teams as well as their opponents had played on the same floor. When the floor was removed during the renovation, holes were found drilled into the concrete. Although there was no evidence of water, there were theories of how moisture seeped underneath to rot the wood.

Before Logan-based Final Floor was brought in to install the new hardwood, the sub flooring was also repaired to keep the integrity of the wood true. According to its company website, Final Floor completed 40 projects for various elementary, junior high, high school and community centers throughout Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia in 2010 alone.

With the help of designs created by new baseball coach Drew Mader, the company installed a two-tone floor which includes the Titan head logo as the mid-court emblem with the block ND in the back ground.

“This is the most detailed project they’ve ever done,” Sammons said.

The overall layout of the floor was changed as new chairs were added. This allows a better flow for fans to move around the facility without interfering with play.

Also installed are new mats along the baseline walls, an improved sound system and up-to-date lighting.

While this project was ongoing, the basketball and volleyball teams had to conduct practices, summer camps and scrimmages either at the old West Middle School or Shawnee State University.

The money for the foyer and bathrooms was obtained thanks to

With the help and generosity of donors, construction has begun behind the north side of the football field that will house a multi- purpose indoor sports facility that will be used by both baseball and softball during winter months as well as other sports teams. With the addition of the newly renovated gym floor, baseball and softball practice during the winter months will no longer be able to take place inside the gym. The new facility will house batting cages and practice equipment as well as the possibility for youth basketball to use for practice. The size of the building has been the main focus and ensures teams will have enough space to conduct practice. After all is said and done the final dimensions of the building will be 42’ x 75’ with a Navy and Gold two tone exterior.

The Southern Ohio Conference Football All-Star team was announced at the end of the season. The Notre Titans, who finished 7-3 overall and 2-2 in the SOC Division I, garnered seven players on the team, which included four first-team selections and three second-team picks. Among the list were, SOC First Team - Jack Kayser, Kevin Lewis, Michael Mader and Dakota Smith.Second Team - Jacob Milani and Daniel Ogg

The Southern Ohio Conference released its list of 2012 All-Stars. Notre Dame had three selected for first team and two for second team. Lady Titans finished third overall with a 10-4 record. SOC First Team - Andrea Marchyn and Libby Welsh Second Team - Maddi Phillips and Olivia Nelson

a grant from the Columbus Diocese. All work done in this area was completed by volunteers and spearheaded by school board president Louis Berger.Beyond the walls for the public to see, improvements were also made to the locker rooms, training room and the installation of a media center to review game tapes for all sports teams to use. At the time of publication, the boys locker rooms had been fully renovated and Sammons estimates the girls locker rooms are at the midway point.

Without a cent coming from the school or the athletic association, Sammons thanked all who were a part of the project, whether they wished to be named or not. At the forefront was Mike Gampp who at one point solicited up to $40,000 from Notre Dame families for this endeavor.

Another big financial donor was Jim Kricker. He helped the cause with a $50,000 gift from the Edmund J. Kricker Advised fund/Scioto County Foundation.

As for the remnants of the old floor, Sammons brought up during the August interview of the possibility of selling chunks to those interested in buying.

“It’s a piece of history,” Sammons said.

This year completes the fifth year of a five year pledge made by the Oberlings to help fund this scholarship for Notre Dame graduates. The Scioto Foundation matches each dona-tion up to $10,000 per year. The Oberlings pledged $10,000 per year, which was matched by the Scioto Foundation.

Notre Dame High School inducted 15 new members into the Robert Holzemer Chapter of the National Honor Society in December. The National Honor Society is an organization sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Notre Dame’s chapter was chartered in May, 1957 and this is the 55th year of its existence. Notre Dame’s chapter is named after the late Robert Holzemer, who played a big part in the chapter’s development. The objectives, quoting from its constitution, are “to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students. Members of the chapter are voted in on the criteria of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. The members must also maintain a Grade Point Average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. Notre Dame’s chapter is involved with many activities including tutoring their peers after school and community service. The advisor is Michael Haskins. Pictured are seated, current National Honor society members front row, Wyatt Dawson, Michael Mader, Kristen Scott, Miranda Pauley, Andrea Marchyn and Staci Ramey. Donations make iPad’s in Notre Dame a reality.

This year’s Notre Dame Alumni award was presented to Andy and Barb Glockner.

Both the Elementary and High School will be receiving Apple iPad’s with the private donations received this year. Notre Dame Elementary will be receiving 30 iPads to update their computer lab as well as a secured cart that syncs, locks and chargers the iPads. The lab will also receive a wireless printer and Macbook Air laptop to help with printing and syncing of the iPads. The high school received 20 iPads as a result of private donations that will be used inside Mrs. Patmore’s class. The high school also purchased with funds available for technology, 40 additional iPads with 2 sync carts, 2 - Macbook Air laptops, and wireless printers that will be divided into first floor and second floor use. The Apple iPad brings a new perspective of learning, with budget constraints forceing schools to use the same books year after year, long after the content is out of date. But with textbooks on iPad, students can get a brand-new version each year — for a fraction of the price of a paper book. They can discover and download iBooks textbooks from the Textbook section of the iBookstore directly to iPad. iPad apps are expanding the learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. From interactive lessons to study aids to productivity tools, there’s an app for every learner.

Notre Dame graduates Andy and Barb Glockner received the Notre Dame Alumni Award at this year’s high school graduation on May 26, 2012. This award recognizes graduates of Notre Dame who have demonstrated a positive involvement and significant contribution to his or community or profession.

Andy and Barb were involved in various athletic programs including football, basketball and cheerleading as students. Andy was active in student government and a member of the 1970 State Champion Football Team. Barb was a member of prom committee,

homecoming and glee club. After graduation they continued the family tradition of staying actively involved in the Notre Dame School system, established by their parents. Andy has called bingo for over 20 years, sells tickets at home football games or works on the chain gang during the game. Barb is an integral part of the Bid Your Heart Out committee, which has been so successful in raising funds for The Notre Dame Schools and has served as Liturgical Music Director at the elementary for over 25 years.

Countless students have relied on them for financial assistance with

2013 Bid Your Heart Out Auction preparing for February 16 auction.

As followers of Christ, we, much more than others, believe that earthly treasures are temporary. Just as Christians are expected to be good stewards of God’s gifts here on earth, we should also have a plan for our estate when we leave this world. As a supporter of Notre Dame Schools, we invite you to remember the schools when doing your estate planning. You may have life insurance policies, stocks, jewelry, real estate or collectibles that could benefit our schools. Reportedly when one of the richest men in America died, John Rockefeller, someone asked his accountant, “How much money did he leave?” The reply was “He left all of it.” We cannot take it with us but we can continue to benefit the causes we supported that were important to us, even after we have left this world.

In 2006, Notre Dame Schools had their first ever Auction, Dinner, and Dance Fundraiser. Thanks to the generosity of area businesses and the hard work of our amazing volunteers from our Notre Dame family, we raised $43,000.00 to benefit our schools. Believing that we had a successful and fun event we continued our tradition in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. In the seven years that we have held the auction fundraisers we have raised over $500,000.00 for our schools! It would not be possible without you, our Notre Dame family.

The “Bid Your Heart Out “committee began meeting in September to make plans for the 2013 auction. We work very hard to make this a fun, exciting event for all of our guests. To donate an item or to purchase tickets, you may call 353-2354. Tickets are $50 and include wine tasting, appetizers, dinner, bidding in the silent and grand auction and dancing.

The Notre Dame Schools Annual Fund

Notre Dame High School Class of 1962 recently held a 50 year class reunion. At the reunion, Therese Roth Colgan suggested the class sponsor a scholarship for one full year of tuition. With the cost of tuition to attend a private Catholic school, it is indeed a sacrifice for many to send their children to Notre Dame. Without additional funding through scholarships, many of those attending today would not be Notre Dame students. It is important that we support the current students with scholarship funds. Most of the graduates from Notre Dame in the past years have received generous scholarships from colleges for college tuition. Last year 25 graduates were offered almost 1 million dollars in scholarships. A Notre Dame education offers financial rewards as well as a spiritual foundation.A $100 donation by each graduate from the class of 1962 was suggested by Ms. Colgan. Checks may be sent to the high school and made out to Notre Dame Class of 1962 Scholarship. Please mark them Attention: Patty Tennant.
