so, youve resolved to eed your pet healthy meals; but justas snacks can undo your diet, poor treat choices can messup your dog or cats nutritional program. A ew simple

suggestions can keep your urry riend happy and on the rightliestyle track!

Pets love praise. Sometimes a treat is not needed. A hug or kindword o encouragement is greatly appreciated!

Pets also love exercise. aking your dog or a good run, throw-ing the ball, or squeaky toys and glitter balls or kitties, is interac-tion that is a treat or pets suering rom cabin ever or battlinga weight issue.

Healthy human ood can make perect treats. Your little carni-

vore may love a piece o cooked chicken or liver or a nibble ocanned salmon, tuna or sardines. Many dogs will enjoy a babycarrot, green bean, slice o pepper, piece o banana, chunk o appleor oret o broccoli. Starchy oods are not a good choice or youor your pet, so avoid pasta, chips, crackers, cookies and breads! Also, avoid cooked ats and greasy cheeses, as these could causea pancreatic episode in your pet. Remember, chocolate, grapes, raisins and onions have been ound to be toxic to pets.

Be aware that commercial treats are packaged, shaped and coloredto appeal to you, not your pet. So try to purchase treats or the healthand taste benet to your pet, not or the curb appeal! Packaging andshaping can drive up price and articial colors can be toxic.

Read ingredient labels. Dont be mislead by deceptive wording ordelicious pictures on the ront o the bag. Te ingredient panel on theback or side o the package tells the most, although ood manuac-turer terminology can disguise the truth about quality in some cases.

Any treat that is a hard biscuit or cookie will contain asignicant amount o starch. Question: I usually skip breakast, but I keep reading how goodit is or me. What are the best options or breakast oods?Answer: Eating breakast in the morning is a great way to jump-start your day. It helps boost your metabolism and keeps youocused longer at work. Some say eating something is always betterthan nothing, and while this is generally true, there are some oodsthat are much more benecial to include in the days rst meal.Eggs are always a great way to get protein and healthy ats intoyour system, and also keep you eeling ull longer. Whole grainsare another crucial component to remember or your breakast.

Whole wheat toast with a sugar-ree ruit spread is a healthy optionthat contains antioxidants and ber. Fruits and vegetables shouldbe incorporated when possible they supply nutritious carbohy-drates that keep the body energized and eeling awake. Im assum-ing everyone is waiting or their beloved cup o coee to make thislist. Well, ear not, coee is also a low-calorie option, assumingyoure not ordering a large, caramel swirl, sugar-lled latte. Addingsome at-ree milk to black coee is an excellent way to get yourdaily calcium requirements and it also contains numerous vitaminsand minerals. Whether you eat your breakast on-the-go, or maketime or a ormal sit-down meal, be sure to include healthy options, while still keeping your breakast convenient or you.Question: I work inside all day and dont see much sun. ShouldI be supplementing with vitamin D?Answer: It depends. Vitamin D is a at-soluble vitamin that isabsorbed in conjunction with calcium, promoting healthy bonegrowth. Vitamin D can be ingested through ood or supplement, but it can also be produced by the body when in direct sunlight.Te daily recommended amount o vitamin D is 10 g. Tis isincluding any vitamin D absorbed rom UV rays. Fortunately, thatonly requires a short amount o sunlight (about 15 minutes) to getthe daily recommendation, depending on where you live and how

intense the sun rays are. During the colder months, vitamin Dbe ingested rom oods such as: sh, milk, mushrooms and ortcereals. I all o those approaches dont seem to work, suppleming vitamin D is a easible option that should be discussed your doctor in advance.

Question: All o my runs tend to be on at ground. Whathe benets o running hills?Answer: Hill running is one o the best workouts to conwhen training or races. It helps build muscle, improve speed

can take your endurance to a whole new level. Picking the hill to run can sometimes be a chore its important to ndthat isnt too steep or too at. You should nd a hill that is aboquarter mile long and steep enough to provide a challenge, buenough that you arent putting too much strain on your anklesshins, causing injury. Always begin a hill workout with a short minute warm up. Loosen the muscles so that they are primea strenuous run. On your rst hill workout, aim or 4 repetit run up the hill, jog down, repeat. Gradually increase retions when you begin to eel stronger and ready. Te results orunning are both physiologically and biomechanically rewarAn avid hill runner will likely have an increased oxygen caity, stronger and more dened leg muscles, and improved slength and requency (increased length rom running upincreased requency rom running downhill). Another berom requent hill running is the ability to relax when runnkeeping the upper body rom tensing up. Running hills or e

workout is not recommended and can increase inrisk, but adding a hill workout every 7-10 days is away to reach noticeable and satisying results.

    Dear Tina,

Do soul mates exist? I so, how can I nd mine?Searching or Some Soul

    Dear Searching for Some Soul,

Soul mates do absolutely exist, although not necessarily in thesame way popular culture portrays them. A soul mate is simplya soul that shares a similar spiritual harmonic, has had priorsoul experiences or shares similar spiritual goals with your soul.Although youve most likely had numerous past-lives together, you are not necessarily meant to be lie partners. Tere are manyother types o soul and spirit companions that sound more likewhat you desire to nd.

How can you nd them? Isnt that the question! o truly nd therelationships you desire, you must develop and listen to your intu-ition in a way that is easy and comortable or you. Many times ourminds and soul traumas get in the way o opportunities around us.Opening up to your abilities is actually quite simple and everyonehas the ability to do so. Once you truly trust yoursel truly you can nd anything and everything you desire.

    Dear Tina,

I have oen elt so passionate and intensely connected to a persononly to have the relationship ail dramatically. I yearn or a loving, emotional and connected relationship and instead I get intensesexual relationships that arent ullling in the long run.

    Longing to be Loved

    Dear Longing to be Loved,

It sounds like you are nding yoursel connected to numecosmic soul relationships. Cosmic relationships are very pasate and sexually intense, but usually dont last aer the energy sto an emotional level. Tis type o relationship isnt as destruas it sounds, though.

When two cosmic souls come together, they actually hamission. Te intense sexual energy activates your rst or secchakras, which orces you to instantly ground and reexamine spiritual purpose. A number o sexual addiction disordersactually spiritual disorders where those aected are despto connect to their purpose and eel stability in their lives.reason the relationships do not last long is because their purhas been met.

I you nd yoursel attracted to an intensely passionate relatship and want to nd something longer lasting, denitely a look at your spiritual goals and mission. Examine your passions and abilities, and ask yoursel i you are satised withdirection o your lie. I not, investigate other work, riendsactivities that support your love o lie. Today we are pretty comortableknowing that a childs success isbased o o good health and educa-

tion. Tat seems like something we could allagree on, right? Right. Yet we see disturbingtrends in child obesity still on the upswing.Tis is particularly disturbing becauseobesity and lethargy go hand-in-hand andas research has shown, physical activity andacademic achievement also go hand-in-hand, but are opposite o the rst pair. Sohow do we change the trend to curve down-ward instead o its current climbing trend?

I have been reading a lot about brainunction lately and I have ound that neuro-science has some interesting points thatindicate how we actually learn and howwe can stop the trend mentioned above.Tis down-sloping trend has childrenspending, on average, about ve hours aday o screen time; that is computer screen,hand-held screen, V screen, etc. Tis isa problem because being sedentary leadsto lethargy. Lethargy leads to increasinglybeing more sedentary and merrily we goalong. Parents, too, are spending many

hours in ront o a screen, but the develop-ing brain o a child and the brain o an adulthave dierent eects rom the same input. When a baby is born, he has 100 billionneurons, or brain cells, and he begins layingconnections or circuits to other cells bybeing exposed to stimuli. Tis is basicallyhow we learn, grownups too. But since thebabys brain is so un-connected, he needs

those stimuli even more. Between the ageso three and 10, a childs brain is twice asactive as an adults because it is establish-ing trillions o new connections and neuralpathways. In act, its building so many newconnections that it actually begins pruningunused connections to reestablish morepathways. Amazing!

What exactly does that have to do withexercise? Well, most o the connectionsbeing created are enhanced by movementand interactive sensory input. Withoutthat coordination o input the brain has amore dicult time laying those connec-tions and there is a direct impact on howwell we learn.

Scientists have documented throughresearch the coordinating relationshipbetween learning and physical movementand skill acquisition. Learning new physicalskills incorporates muscle movement; andthat type o learning overlaps and enhancesthe other learning that people need, namelyreading, math, language and logic.

Gymnastics is the learning o new skillsas the athlete develops into a gymnast. Asomersault or roll on the oor developsinto a handspring, develops into a rontip, develops into a twisting ront ip, etc.

New pathways are created with everynew layer o skill acquisition. Tis is mark-edly dierent than a sport like baseball, orexample, where the basic skills are rened as

the athlete progresses but no new skills arelearned; throwing, catching, swinging andrunning are the same skills or a 5-year-oldin ball as they are or an MLB player, albeitat a dierent level o perormance. So again, gymnastics is the top o the list or helpingchildren develop their brains.

Te latest studies in education areshowing that the single greatest predic-tor or success in reading and math romkindergarten through 4th grade is actu-ally hand-eye coordination and motorskills. I personally eel that gymnastics isthe highest orm o physical skill devel-opment and more studies have shownneural networks (i.e., the ow o inorma-tion in the brain) o children in preschoolgymnastics is much higher than childrenwho are not exposed to such activity.

Neurologists are nding evidence that thecerebellum, which coordinates the physicalmovement, also coordinates the movemento thought, says John Ratey in his book TeUsers Guide to the Brain.

Learning in essence then, is not juour heads, but in our bodies. I we alearn and reach or surpass our potewe must exercise both. Sadly as our schhave nancial restraints put on their options, we are seeing student access to pical activity reduced. Our nightmare oonly being the biggest, attest, blobEarth will be enhanced with other des

tors like slowest, dumbest or most uncessul. Tis is an embarrassing place great country to be in. As the rest oworld is catching up with America inootrace o ingenuity we are nding to slow our pace.

Children need a physical outlet, not to combat the trend o obesity but to them learn and develop their brains learning capacity. Tere is a reason why educators came up with the idea o rebecause some o the most productive tima students day is right aer physical act

Ideally, any images in this areaare compatible with love: objects paired intwos, pictures o happy couples, so anglesand no sharp corners. Fire is ok, too. In addition to checking the relation-ship area o the home (back right arearom the ront door as you enter), youdenitely want to take a look at yourbedroom. It should look like a placewhere a relationship could happen. Now, Im not suggesting you put thecart beore the horse here, but i youreventual goal is a healthy, happy, appro-priate relationship, then there needs tobe room in your romantic places oranother person. Te bed should not beshoved up against a wall, or example.Te bed is symbolic o your relation-ship and space or it. So, i there is onlyroom or one person OR only enoughroom or one person to get in and out othe bed, well, then. thats what youllget! Make room or two! Tis meansyou should have two similarly matched

nightstands, as well. I you cant accom-plish that, then no nightstands would bebetter than one.

Check the kitchen! Yes, I said kitchen. Now, Ive spoken about the kitchen beingrelated to prosperity, but its a hub othe home and can be connected to yourromantic activities. Who doesnt want toenjoy a beautiul candle-lit dinner with anattractive companion? At the very least, make sure you have something to contrib-ute to such a scenario. I that meanspurchasing spaghetti and a jar o sauce,go or it! Make sure you dont only havemismatched, chipped dinnerware, too.Buy some tea lights and use them! Tiscould be a really FUN endeavor. Imaginehosting your intended or a simple dinnerand some wine, champagne, dessert, orwhatever would trip your trigger. I youhave it, they will come!

Do a gut check with your commit-ment level in your home. Now, Im allor being a bit eclectic and mixing andmatching dcor. However, i you haveincomplete themes or are trying to mixcountry dcor with Asian Buddhist, you might want to make sure there arespecic areas committed to an overallidea. Tis may seem like an unrelateddetail, but what is going on in yourhome is going on in your lie. Our

environments and experiences mirrone another. Anything you can do tochange those mirror images to yourliking will be a worthwhile endeavor

Clean the junk drawer. Even the besthousekeeper usually has a stash oclutter somewhere. Much like the innclutter that can get in the way o our tionships, the junk drawer eventuallcauses some sort o problem (lost calctor, anyone?). So, clean it! We all needa junk drawer, but we can still work tomake it a little more organized. Strangenough, this oen leads to our beingable to see other clutter that we may horgotten. Cleaning up these areas is ato dealing with residual issues or inseties that prevent us rom more activelypursuing the right relationship or culting health in our existing relationship

I challenge you to try just one thinthis list this February! Even i you ara committed relationship, you mightnotice an improvement (or bring a quality that you thought was gonwould love to hear about your sucHappy Valentines Day!

Hydrangea is one o my avorite medicinal herbs. I havemany testimonials o dissolved calcications by way oits soapy action. Tis herb seems to have an anity or

the urinary system but I have also seen benets or the gallbladderand prostate.

Hydrangea is an aquatic plant o the swamps and marshes. Tename is derived rom a Greek compound meaning water-vessel.Four o the known species are natives o America; one, is the

common garden hydrangea. Te root o the species hydrangeaarborescens is generally used or herbal preparations whereas theleaves are toxic.

Hydrangea is a rich source o minerals, including the elec-trolytes, chromium, manganese, silicon and sulur. Hydrangeacontains some bitter compounds, so it is a good blood puri-er. Te herb also contains the avonoids: quercetin and rutin.Hydrangea also provides saponins, a volatile oil, and a glycosidecalled hydrangein. Energetically it is a pungent and cooling herb.

Herbalists today use hydrangea to support the genitourinarysystem mainly due to its antiseptic, lithotrophic and diuretic prop-erties. It can be useul or prostate health and calcium deposits, and can take down inammation associated with gout, arthritisand rheumatism. Te herb is believed to promote expulsion ourinary stones, help break down and dissolve them, and aid inpreventing stone ormation.

Adequate sel-care, including rest and quiet time, is oenrequired beore we can truly hear what others are trying totell us. Tis is true with all sorts o others, including our

subconscious sel, a creative muse or (i youre so inclined) the Divine.ake a quiet moment and listen to yoursel: your body sensa-

tions, your mood, whats on your mind. Is there something yousuddenly realize you need or would really like?

Our culture teaches us that attention to sel detracts rom regardand care or others. Tis reects several underlying assump-

tions. First, each sel is a separate unit whose internal state is notconnected with anyone elses. Second, theres only so much goodto go around, and i we spend it on ourselves, we deprive others.Tird, our own unmet needs do not subconsciously color ourinteractions with others.

In contrast, consider this billboard or the Minnesota DNR:a man leaps into a glorious, remote lake with the caption, akeyour vacation days please. Signed, your co-workers.

A loving relationship with onesel actually contributes to lovingrelationships with others. In reality, were all connected. All actso caring contribute to the whole, whether expressing care towardeach other or toward ourselves.

Beyond our connections to each other, some o us sense orsurmise a mystical connection to something greater. A mystic, according to Merriam-Webster online, is a person who seeks bycontemplation and sel-surrender to obtain unity with or absorp-tion into the Deity or the absolute.

Tough this sounds a bit esoteric, it may actually be quite common.Tink o the times youve immersed yoursel in some activity orcreation and ound that it seemed to transpire through you, carryingyou with it, the moment you let go o trying to control it.

Do you consider yoursel a mystic? When I asked mysel that

question, I hesitated, thinking I havent suered enough. Ibuying into the assumptions identied above, which implysel-care and mysticism are diametrically opposed.

In act, they support one another. A standard tool o mcism is quiet contemplation, which is good or us physicallyemotionally while also enhancing our ability to hear wha

Divine may be trying to tell us.St. Benedict emphasized, in the instructions he wrote

monasteries, that meeting basic needs and balancing work leisure, as well as prayer, makes the communities more eeschools or Gods service.

Attending to our own spiritual needs (whatever that meaneach o us) has been shown to be excellent sel-care, improeverything rom our outlook on lie to our blood pressure.

What about the sel-surrender mentioned in the denitiomysticism? I believe that reers, not to suering, but to yielding were attached to when we see that it gets in the way o something b

Tat could mean yielding a grudge, a bad mood, a particway o going about things, a prejudice, a certainty o being ra sense o control. It could mean yielding attachment to otapproval. It could mean yielding the appearance o being sein order to take appropriate care o sel.

So this month, as our culture celebrates love, do sometextra kind or yoursel. Consider it a Valentine to yoursel, taround you and (i you so choose) the Creator.

Masonry: Brickwork, stone work, old stucco. We aresurrounded by it. We live in it. Some pay no atten-tion to it; some are ascinated by it. I coness a smol-

dering passion. I am a keeper. Many o you are. You just dontknow. Keepers are a quiet society o those who live in or work onor relish the gravitas, the quiet comort, and the balance o oldstone or worn brick. Te cracked lintels above a doorway. Teworn stone stoop o an entrance with welcomes long past andyet to come. Tese are things a keeper sees. Te soot o old res.Green or black lichen growing below a windowsill. Tese are the

So many are not.Teir busy rabbit lives have no time or the tapestry o a shadowcast brick pattern. Te work o quiet undulation o stones piledone atop another, so mortars joining stone to stone. Eachyear, each decade o living o joy or grie echoes woven into themortars, the walls. Te windows, the doorways, each a welcome,a way into those who came beore. o those who are keepers, Ibid you welcome.

Now lets consider things to ponder. Did you know that oldmortars are considered millennial mortars? Tink o WinchesterCathedral with grati carved into its columns rom when WilliamWallace and his ollowers wintered there more than 700 years ago.Teir names, their times cut into the stones in the cathedral itsel.Teir horses, stabled where pews sat. Te great stained glass o the

very ront o the cathedral broken out by the soldiers and carriedaway in the dark o night. Te peasants risking their lives to hidethe glass until the invaders departed. Tey were keepers. Tink othe Great Wall o China, so longstanding that miles upon mileswere lost to time, covered by the sands and orgotten. Unknownuntil recently, these are millennial mortars. What have they gotto do with you? Pretty much any building you see that was built

in the 1800s going back in time is a product o long-held amortar blends. I have replicated more than 60 blends o min this region alone. As Ive done mortar analysis on wondold structures hundreds or thousands o years standing acroslandscape o the old world, I see the common bonds, the ti you will, o our people using the elements o our earth a

very top o their game. Tey wove disparate materials rom utheir very eet into comorting quiet homes, sanctuaries romelements, the storms o lie.

Be they structures great or humble, the very abric o

material bids us welcome. Come rest in my shadow or comwithin rom the dark o night. We humans are much like hecrabs i you will. Oen we are drawn to old homes, homeshave the echoes o children growing or the poignant sadnean old one, weak and passing. Tis is because within the wo old homes resides that special magic o those who have cbeore. Did you know that old mortars and plasters need cadioxide to continually evolve and strengthen and rene their talline matrix? Te very abric o their structure? Did you kold mortars could heal themselves rom reeze or shock? Wdo they get the ood, the energy to continue this never-enchain o lie? Tis microscopic coral ree existence? Why carbon dioxide and care. From your very breath and your lived within. Tese buildings garner sustenance rom you aslive out their time providing shelter and protection and a plabirth and lie and death. do you crave sweets morning, noon and night? Do you ndit impossible to stop eating sugar once you start? We allget cravings rom time to time, some more than others.

You may nd yoursel lurking in your pantry or making anotherlap down the bakery aisle staring with desire. Sugar is probably themost addicting substance in our culture. Te average Americanconsumes 22 teaspoons o sugar a day! It is no coincidence that theincrease o sugar consumption is directly correlated with chronicdiseases, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Tisweakens the digestive system, causing ood to be poorly digestedand assimilated. Tis leads to blood sugar imbalances and increasesin sugar cravings as well as the destruction o B vitamins. Sincerened sugar does not contain any minerals, it strips calcium andother minerals rom the body in order to help metabolize it.

Eating excessive sugar may also promote chronic atigue, lowenergy and obesity. Te rapid rise in blood sugar causes large secre-
