    About two years ago, I received a letter rom my sister inorm-ing all ve o us siblings o her skin cancer diagnosis and implor-ing each o us to make an appointment or a screening. Growingup on a arm, we had extensive exposure to the sun on a dailybasis. Back then, skin protection was not the hot topic it is today.Considering that our ather and one brother both had suspiciousgrowths removed as well, we are thankul that we are all currentlyin the clear and are more keenly aware o the danger.

    July is UV Saety Month a perect time to schedule ascreening and to reinorce your eorts to protect yoursel and youramily rom too much sun exposure. It is a act: studies have linkedoverexposure to the sun with skin cancer. In addition, according tothe U.S. Department o Health & Human Services, Te harmulultraviolet rays rom both the sun and indoor tanning sunlampscan cause many other complications besides skin cancer suchas eye problems, a weakened immune system, age spots, wrinklesand leathery skin. Te need to take protective measures rom thesun is quite clear today.

    Experts advise that we: Avoid the sun at its strongest.

    Wear proper clothing. Avoid getting burned. Go or the shade. Use extra caution when near reective suraces. Use extra caution when at higher altitudes. Apply and re-apply broad-spectrum sunscreen/sunblock.

    your best riend tells you, You have to try my massagetherapist. She/he is the best! So, on your riends advice,you go in and spend $70 or an hour massage. During

    the massage, the pressure is too much (or maybe too little) andaer the hour is over you leave eeling more stressed or rustratedbecause you did not get the massage you wanted. Why? Yourriend said she/he was antastic?

    What most people dont realize is that massage is a personal expe-rience. Tere are as many preerences when it comes to massageas there are people and types o massage. Some clients want verylight pressure, candles, music, so sheets and a dark room. Teywant their massage therapist to silently give them their treatmentand then extra time to relax on the table aerward. Others have aspecic goal in mind. Tey have an injury or a specic issue thatthey want taken care o and their surroundings are not a prior-ity. Its not that any o those approaches are wrong, they are justdierent. So, how do you nd out which massage therapist is the

    one or you?First, you need to determine the type o massage you are inter-

    ested in. Tere are many dierent types o massage therapy outthere, so do a bit o research online. Maybe you preer the experi-ence o a relaxing light-pressure massage with aromatherapy andscented oil or lotion. Or maybe you preer a good deep-tissuemassage to work out the knots, aches and pains. You should also

    consider what eort you want to put into the experience. Tirange rom a very passive role to actually being involved instretches and active movement to loosen joints and limbs.

    Once you have a good idea o what type o massage youlooking or, search or an independent massage therapist whcertied in that particular technique. Call those qualied induals and ask questions. Te person on the phone should be mthan willing to answer your queries and concerns, and letknow i they are the right massage therapist or you. Some mastherapists will happily change their style to accommodate Other therapists may reer you to someone else that may bsuit your needs. Te important thing is that when you make appointment, all your questions have been answered, and youcomortable with the decision you have made.

    Once the massage is in session, please keep in mind thathave control over how it goes. ell the massage therapist iwant more or less pressure. Also, do not be araid to let

    therapist know i they are talking too much! Remember thatare paying them or your experience, so make it work or Once your massage is completed, you can then decide whethnot that massage was what you expected. You might have tseveral dierent massage therapists beore nding one that myour needs. I am always surprised when I hear someone say, been seeing my massage therapist or years but she/he never rworks the areas I want her/him to. As massage therapists, wecustomer loyalty, but there is no reason to continue with a thpist that does not address your needs.

    Every massage therapist takes something dierent rom education and adds something to what they learned to matheir own. Tat can range rom crystals to deep stretches. Whave our dierent styles and approaches. So dont ret! Do sresearch, ask questions and be honest with your massage theraSomewhere out there is an independent massage therapist thright or you!

    when I was at a workshop about dream maniestationthis past month, the person giving the workshop gaveeach o us participants a Grace Card rom Cheryl

    Richardsons set o Grace Cards A 50 Card Deck. Te work-shop leader let us know she hoped the cards would set a tone oreach person and help each o us break the ice to open up spiritu-ally. She also wanted the cards to act as tools that would help usmaniest our own hopes and dreams in essence, to nd ways tocreate positive changes to our lives.

    One o the participants expressed that she was not really amil-iar with spiritual messages presented in the Grace Cards. She stillwent ahead and chose a card aer the acilitator let her know itwas OK i she chose not to. Te acilitator also expressed to thegroup that the term spiritual means dierent things to dierent

    people. She explained that every person present needed to nd aplace within themselves where they could go to receive their owninner guidance and to open up to new ideas that would be given inthe workshop later on that day.

When I read my card out loud, a woman who came tothe workshop to learn how to maniest a new corporate position,made a comment that she was open to my cards suggestion, butshe wanted to know just how she should go about doing it. Whata great question, especially or all o us living in times when ourouter, ast-paced and noisy world seems to counter any chanceo us getting in touch with our still world.

    Te card I pulled indicated what many spiritual authorsleaders have expressed: despite the seemingly endless things gon around us, we need to go inward in order to open up to grabundance, health and peace. o do so we rst need to becsilent and still. We have to slow down our minds in order tothe benet o getting in touch with our inner guidance whispers o our spirit instructing us with the things we need tin order to maintain a healthy soul.

    Yet many people today believe that getting still and quiet is esaid than done. One o my colleagues recently sent me a quoSomeecards posted on Pinterest: Men: I you ever wanna kwhat a womans mind eels like, imagine a browser with 2,857open. All. Te. ime. I laughed out loud when I read it becabelieve that to be completely true. And though this statementgeared towards women, I think it is sae to say that both menwomen eel this way on a regular basis. In that case, it appeabe within our best interest to work towards what the experts

    suggested: nding ways to be silent and still in order to osterinner guidance.

    o get in touch with our spirit, it takes daily intentioninspired action on our part. In order to do that, we need to clomany o our mental (browser) tabs as possible. We can start swith a block o 3-5 minutes o quiet time in the morning and ievening. It is essential that we nd a method to ocus our mon during each block o time. One method is to turn our attento our breathing. We can do this by counting to three in our hduring each inhale and each exhale. Another way to ocus have a cup o tea and stare at a physical object, such as a caWe can use any simple little object in place o the candle as lonwe set the intention to quiet our minds down by ocusing. Tocusing exercises: 1) guide us to more inspired ways o ninner peace; 2) nurture our soul; and 3) give us the power to mhealthy changes in our lives.

    holistic is an umbrella term that reers to the considerationo the mind, body and spirit o the patient. Tere canbe many modalities under this holistic umbrella. Even

    a surgeon can practice holistically. An allopathic surgeon mightrepair a broken bone and send his patient on his way. A holisticsurgeon will concern himsel with the rehabilitation o his patientand even the emotional toll that this hardship has caused the indi-

    vidual and his amily. A holistic practitioner has many tools in hisor her tool box rom which to choose to manage a patients case.

    Not all holistic practitioners are the same. All holistic veterinari-ans have graduated rom a conventional our-year veterinary schooland have attained a doctor o veterinary medicine degree. Most

    have an undergraduate degree in addition. Tis amounts to eightyears o college. However, a holistic veterinarian has pursued addi-tional course work in a particular area o ocus. Many have becomecertied in veterinary acupuncture, veterinary spinal manipulativetherapy, Chinese herbology or ood therapy. What all o these prac-titioners have in common is the breadth o knowledge o animalanatomy and physiology, and animal disease, that is not covered i

    one has studied only the human coursework or a given modIt is not legal in the state o Wisconsin or a non-veterinariapractice medicine, diagnosis or treat animal disease.

    In conventional practice, a veterinarians bread and buconsists o the rapidity o oce visits or vaccinations.     Sometimes lie lessons can be oundin unlikely places. Te Vikingstelevision show on the History

    Channel has some ascinating examples othe importance o emotional intelligence!Te hero is a gung-ho guy named Ragnar.Ragnar is an intrapreneur. An intrapre-neur is an employee who shows qualities oan entrepreneur: has lots o initiative andcreativity, is a risk taker, is opinionated andthinks outside the box. You would thinkmost managers would be thrilled with an

    employee like this, but this is not alwaysthe case. Some may eel threatened ordisrespected. Tis is certainly the case withRagnars boss, the Earl Haraldson!

    One o the early episodes has severalexamples where having emotional intel-ligence skills, knowledge o social stylesand awareness o employee engagementconcepts could have made a dierence. Inthis episode, Ragnar is at a sta meetingwhere planning is being done or theupcoming plundering season. Basically, hestepped in it. In addition, his boss reactedpoorly to his employees demonstration oinitiative. Dont make the mistakes Ragnarand Earl Haraldson made!

    Ragnar assumed that his initiativewould be appreciated. In a meeting, hechallenged Earl Haraldsons old ideathat they go east to plunder sameold, same old! He believed there weregreater opportunities west. It had never

    been done beore. Earl Haraldson wasnot only skeptical, but chastised Ragnaror challenging his authority in ronto the other sta. He ordered him tocomply. Or else!

    Ragnar went west anyway and cameback with great treasure that he proudlypresented to his boss. He made theassumption that the earl would orgivethe transgression as the outcome was sobenecial or the company and or the

    companys uture. Wrong! Ragnar ailed to read the room! H

    in the summer o 2003, I ound mysel sitting in the nan-cial aid oce o a massage school. Looking past the womanrattling o numbers and interest rates, and gazing at the sun-

    kissed land and crystalline blue waters characteristic to the GulCoast, I ound mysel having absolutely no idea what this womanwas talking about. Why do you want to be a massage therapist?What a question to snap me back into the reality o her connedwalls. Looking up at the anatomy posters, I was reminded o why Iwas there. Well, I guess I dont really want to be one, I respondedto the president o this small coastal career college who entered theroom like a ninja in the darkness. I just want to help people andI thought this would be a good start. Te president stood there inher perectly pressed business suit looking at me in contemplationor a ew seconds. Ten her lips pursed and curled into a smile asshe replied with ambivalence, I guess thats good enough or us.

    Tat day marked the very shaky and unsure rst steps o oneo the most incredible journeys o my lie. It also gave birth to mybittersweet love aair with natural and allopathic medicine. I that

    last sentence seems controversial, my hope is that one day it mayno longer be. Troughout my career, I have come across hundreds,maybe thousands, o patients, colleagues, riends and acquain-tances who nd the need to dene themselves as an advocate o oneor the other. For some reason, in our culture, we have attemptedto divide these branches o medicine so much so that we eel weneed eld soldiers to constantly slay each other. o me, the two havealways been two halves o a greater whole. As an acupuncturist, Iwould best describe these two seemingly opposite approaches tohealth as a perect example o yin and yang. I believe that, just asyin and yang, they cannot exist without each other; that they are, inact, codependent, and i you look deep enough into either scope,eventually you will nd a spark o the other. Its the perect marriageo two complementary yet opposite pairs; soul mates, i you will.

    Looking back again to my massage school days, it was in the earlydays o my education that the roots or my previously mentionedbelie took shape. We were lucky enough to have an eclectic groupo instructors. Te ones that resonated with me on the deepest levelwere: a Native American medicine woman named asa (meaninglightning strikes); a chiropractor named Christian, who, althoughhe was strongly science minded, urged me to pursue acupunctureand eventually wrote the recommendation letter that gained me

    entrance into the masters program or Oriental medicine; aphysical therapist with crazy spiked hair and exuberance othat was just inectious. Tese mentors helped my young mtake shape and allowed me to challenge their ideas and devmy own theories.

    It was asas intuition, Christians mind and the crazy-hphysical therapists excitement that ignited the re inside meburns as a beacon or education and health today.

    I tell my students that back in 2003 my anatomy teacher me that in 10 years medicine as we knew it would be changingthat it was us sitting in that very classroom at that very momthat would most accurately reect that change. He explainedMassage Terapists were the perect storm. With the understing o anatomy, physiology and kinesiology and the energetitouch and intention they are perect catalyst or healing.

    oday, massage therapists are no longer only in spas. Teyound in hospitals, P clinics, chiropractic oces, acupuncoces, hospitals and the list goes on and on. Te benets o mas

    therapy are widely accepted and, thanks to iany Fields andouch Research Institute (Miami, Fla.), have been extensresearched and documented. Massage therapy is an excellent cor those who have an innate desire to help others, a scientic mand an intuitive nature. An education in massage therapy servthe perect beginning or those who wish to go even deeper more advanced clinical practices, as I did with acupuncture.

    Te understanding o the human orm and o its movemthat was gained during those inantile days o my educationpropelled my clinical practice orward with explosive momenTat understanding gave me a solid oundation and still hme interpret my ndings today. Aer an additional eight yeagraduate and post graduate education, I still nd mysel redeeply on this knowledge. I will be orever grateul or the dayI unwillingly ended up in that coastal career college, staring a

    vast horizon and committing to start my career in medicinbecoming a massage therapist.

    what is yin yang? Well, I am nota linguist, nor do I speak ancientMandarin, but here it what Ive

    learned. Some 5,000 years ago, the ancient Shaolinpriests noticed that the hands and eet o aging womenwere in general cooler than those o men the same age. Sincethen, the cool energies have been dubbed as eminine and the warmenergies as masculine. It was not intended to distinguish the dier-ences between the sexes, nor was it intended to judge good or bad.

    Over centuries, the meaning o words and phrases take on dier-ent meanings. A good example is the word ear. When one hears theword ear one perceives terror. wo thousand years ago it meant tostand in awe. So, i one were to read a 2,000-year-old document onthe subject o ear, one would believe the document was describing

    terror, when in act it is describing awe.oday, in the Western world, yin yang has or the most part become

    male and emale, having more to do with describing the sexes. Maleenergies are being described as bad and the eminine energies asgood. Over the last 20 years, I have seen the newest interpretationhijacked and twisted to the point that it is now being used to dividebrother and sister.

    Earlier this year, a homeopathic doctor recommended to a clientthat she set up an appointment with me. She told her that she hadtaken her as ar as she could, that I had excellent success with otherssuering the same afiction and that she knew o no one else that shetrusted to get the job done.

    She called to set an appointment. Aer putting her on the calendar,she asked, Isnt there a woman healer I can see?

    Your doctor sent you my way because she knows I have theknowledge and experience, and that I get the desired benets, I said.

    Proper hydration is vital or the health o your dog, cat or anyanimal. Humans, as well as our pets, are made up o about 80percent water! We oen think o proper hydration as being neces-sary or keeping cool in warm weather. Indeed, it is! Our dogspanting is her way o keeping cool through evaporation. Waterin our pets bodies is also necessary or every unction, includingdigestion, circulation and waste removal. Veterinarians suggest

    chronic levels o dehydration may lead to health issues, includingimpaired kidney unction. You may be thinking that your dog orcat seems to drink enough at the water bowl, but how can we besure our pets are getting enough water?

    Consider the ood you eed your dog or cat. A dog or cat huntingor its ood would be eating prey that is about 80 percent moisture.Dry dog and cat ood contains only 10 percent moisture. I youeed a dry ood, your pets digestive system is immediately tryingto use available moisture in the body to begin digesting the ood.Adding at least 1/2 cup o water to each cup o ood and allowing ittime to absorb beore eeding will ease the burden on the digestivesystem. You can also add extra water to canned, homemade andraw diets. Some pet owners have been concerned that adding waterto ood may cause loose stools. Fortunately, this is not the case.
