NIAID PrioritiesNIAID Priorities

To Develop:

• An effective AIDS vaccine• Technologies and medical countermeasures against

Cat A-C agents and emerging infectious diseases• New medical counter measures for influenza• Medical interventions using immune tolerance

strategies• Better capacity in developing countries to support

clinical trials of vaccines and therapeutics for AIDS, malaria, TB, and other important global diseases

Three areas of focus:• Infrastructure – safely conduct research on

dangerous pathogens• Basic research - microbes and host immune

defenses – foundation for applied research

• Medical countermeasures – targeted, milestone-driven– vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics

Choose the Appropriate Funding Instrument and Mechanism

Choose the Appropriate Funding Instrument and Mechanism

• Three major funding “instruments” to support extramural research– Grant – researcher decides the research to be

designed and approach

– Contract – government decides the research to fill a specific need

– Cooperative agreement – grant, but the awarding institute has substantial involvement in the project activities
