It is the lone NCHC series this weekend, before four other teams begin NCHC play next weekend. WMU and CC met in the NCHC Playoffs last season, with the Tigers upsetting the Broncos in three games in their best-of-three series in Kalamazoo, ending WMU’s season while Colorado College advanced to its first ever NCHC Frozen Faceoff. Revisiting the NCHC Preseason Media Poll, WMU was picked to finish third in the regular season, while the Tigers were selected to finish in sixth place. That’s also where the teams finished last season. (page 9) • Four NCHC teams face non-conference foes this weekend, including three two-game series (two of which are in NCHC venues), while North Dakota entertains Michigan Tech in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game. Last weekend, NCHC teams combined to go 8-3-1 in non-conference play, including 5-1-0 on Saturday when the five winning teams allowed only three goals combined. The NCHC is off to a 23-14-6 start in non- conference play overall this season, with the .605 win percentage second among the six Division I men’s hockey conferences (Big Ten at .676). With the Pioneers still in the top spot, an NCHC team has now been ranked No. 1 in the USCHO.com Poll in 65 of the last 77 weeks dating back to the start of the 2016-17 season. Half of the NCHC teams have held the No. 1 spot during that span (Denver, UMD, North Dakota and St. Cloud State), while the NCHC is home to the last four NCAA National Champions. Only three NCHC teams are ranked in the USA Hockey Magazine Poll, with DU a unanimous No. 1, while UMD moved up to No. 6 and North Dakota entered the poll for the first time this season at No. 14. (page 9) • Two NCHC teams are off to very strong starts on special teams. Omaha is tied for second nationally on the power play, converting 31.8 percent of the time (7-for-22), with the seven power play goals tying for third in the NCAA. • Colorado College split a series with a Big Ten opponent for the second time this season last weekend, taking the opener from Michigan State, 3-1, before falling on Saturday, 5-1. CC was idle two weekends ago, but in its opening series against Minnesota, the Tigers followed a similar pattern, winning the Friday opener and falling on Saturday.
• Redshirt sophomore forward Bailey Conger tallied two goals in Friday’s win over Michigan State, his first goals and points as a Tiger after trans-ferring from Providence last season. Conger had only one goal in 24 games as a freshman at Providence in 2017-18.
• Redshirt senior forward Chris Wilkie assisted on the game-win-ning goal in Friday’s win over the Spartans. After being held off the scoresheet in Saturday’s loss, the Florida Panthers draft pick saw his three-game point streak to start the season snapped, but he still has six points (3g, 3a) in four games this season. Wilkie’s 1.50 points per game this year are tied for second in the NCHC.

Awarded to the NCHC regular season champion, the Julie and Spencer Penrose
Memorial Cup (right) serves as the league’s crowning achievement. The Cup is named after Julie and Spencer Penrose, who were tremendously successful in the business world and did much of it in Colorado Springs in the early 1900s. The couple made much of their money in the copper industry, which is why the trophy includes copper stars on it. The Penroses also set up the El Pomar Foundation, which still today helps pay for amateur sports and other non-profits, including the NCHC office located in the Copper Building next to the Penrose House on the grounds of the Penrose compound in Colorado Springs. The El Pomar Foundation has also issued grants for the Penrose Cup, medallions for each individual champion and the NCHC’s annual Post-Graduate Scholarship. St. Cloud State won its second straight and third Penrose Cup overall last season, also winning it in the NCHC’s inaugural season (2013-14). North Dakota has won two Penrose Cups back-to-back (2014-15, 2015-16), while Denver is the only other Penrose Cup champion (2016-17) to date.

After what some considered a tough weekend of non-confer-ence results for the National Collegiate Hockey Conference
(NCHC) as a whole last weekend, NCHC teams responded on Friday night, posting a 3-2-1 combined record in non-conference action, including a pair of overtime games. No. 8/8 Minnesota Duluth, No. 16 North Dakota and Colorado College all earned wins, while Miami rallied for a road tie.
The eighth-ranked Bulldogs (2-3-0) bounced back in a big way after being swept at Wisconsin last weekend, downing a differ-ent Big Ten foe in in-state rival No. 20 Minnesota, 5-2, on the Gophers’ home ice Friday. Junior defenseman Scott Perunovich paced UMD’s offense with three points on a goal and two assists, including on both Bulldog power play goals. Minnesota Duluth, which jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Friday, goes for a sweep in Duluth on Saturday.
No. 16 North Dakota (3-1-1) earned the most thrilling win of the night, erasing a 1-0 deficit late to tie the game, before topping former WCHA foe Bemidji State, 2-1, in overtime at Ralph Engel-stad Arena. Redshirt senior forward Westin Michaud scored the game-winner off a faceoff only 52 ticks into the extra session, while junior forward Jordan Kawaguchi tied the game with 5:47 left in regulation. UND limited the Beavers to only 17 shots on goal in the win.
Colorado College (2-1-0) came out of the gates strong on Friday, striking twice in the first period en route to a 3-1 win over Mich-igan State in Colorado Springs. Redshirt sophomore forward Bai-ley Conger scored his first two goals as a Tiger to lead the way, while freshman goalie Matt Vernon totaled 26 saves in his first collegiate start, nearly pitching a shutout until a late MSU goal.
Making its first road trip of the season, Miami (1-3-2) scored twice in the first three minutes of the third period to erase a two-goal deficit and earn a 3-3 overtime tie at Colgate. Senior forward Gordie Green handed out the primary assist on all three RedHawk tallies in the tie, while MU outshot the Raiders, 28-20.
On the flip side, No. 14/14 St. Cloud State (0-1-2) hosted No. 11/11 Northeastern for its home opener, but Northeastern won the first half of the battle of the Huskies, 4-1. Sophomore for-ward Sam Hentges tied the game for SCSU in the second period, but Notheastern’s Tyler Madden scored twice after that in the middle stanza and NU added an empty-netter late to seal it. SCSU goes for its first win of the year Saturday, while looking to hand Northeastern (4-0-1) its first loss.
No. 18 Western Michigan (1-3-1) will look to snap a three-game losing streak on Saturday after being blanked by in-state rival Michigan, 4-0, Friday at Yost Ice Arena. The Broncos outshot the Wolverines, 36-31, but Michigan scored twice in the first frame and never looked back.
After NCHC teams combined to post a 3-2-1 record in non-conference play on Friday night, the conference per-
formed even better on Saturday, going an impressive 5-1-0, with two teams (Minnesota Duluth and North Dakota) complet-ing weekend sweeps and two recording shutouts (UMD, Miami). The five NCHC teams that won on Saturday (St. Cloud State and Western Michigan, as well) combined to allow only three goals total in their victories.
Bouncing back after being swept at Wisconsin last weekend, No. 8/8 Minnesota Duluth (3-3-0) did some sweeping of its own, blanking in-state rival No. 20 Minnesota, 2-0, on Saturday at AMSOIL Arena to cap off a home-and-home series. UMD fresh-man forward Quinn Olson scored his first collegiate goal in the first period, which held up as the game-winner. Senior goalten-der Hunter Shepard stopped all 21 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season and 16th of his career, extending his NCHC record. Sophomore forward Jackson Cates sealed the win with an empty-netter.
The other NCHC team to sweep this weekend was No. 16 North Dakota (4-1-1), which struck twice in the first period and rolled to a 4-1 win over Bemidji State in Grand Forks, after needing overtime for Friday’s win. Junior forward Grant Mismash scored only 36 ticks into the game and also had an assist in the win. The Beavers broke up sophomore goalie Adam Scheel’s shutout with only 1:17 remaining in regulation with UND already ahead, 3-0. Scheel finished with 19 saves for his fourth win this year.
Joining UMD in pitching a shutout on Saturday was Miami (2-3-2), which held Colgate off the scoreboard in a 2-0 victory, the RedHawks first road win of the season. Senior goaltender Ryan Larkin stopped all 29 shots he faced for his first whitewash this season and sixth of his career. Both RedHawk goals came in the first period, with sophomore forward Monte Graham scoring only 1:08 into the game and freshman defenseman Jack Clement doubling the lead later in the opening period.
Picking up its first win of the season on Saturday was No. 14/14 St. Cloud State (1-1-2), which handed No. 11/11 Northeastern its first loss of the season with a 2-1 comeback win in St. Cloud, as the Huskies split their series. Northeastern struck first on the power play, but senior forward Jack Poehling tied the game in the second period and sophomore forward Sam Hentges pot-ted the game-winner four minutes later. Junior forward Easton Brodzinski assisted on both second-period goals for SCSU.
Also picking up a split on Saturday was No. 18 Western Michi-gan (2-3-1), which snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over in-state rival Michigan in Kalamazoo, after being blanked in Ann Arbor on Friday. WMU scored two goals in the first 3:01 of the game, including senior defenseman Kale Ben-nett’s first career goal, while junior forward Paul Washe sealed the victory with a pair of power play goals.
The lone NCHC team to fall on Saturday was Colorado College (2-2-0), which was tripped up by Michigan State, 5-1, in Col-orado Springs, as CC settled for a weekend split. The Spartans scored three times in the first seven minutes of the game and the Tigers couldn’t recover. Sophomore forward Ben Copeland tallied CC’s lone goal on the power play late in the first frame. The Tigers outshot MSU, 36-30, in the loss.
