Latin America is

still the region

with most NAMA

activities

Energy supply is

the most

common, but also

waste, buildings

and transport

Page 4: NAMAs: towards Paris and beyond

• The coming year is crucial

• We continue to see

increasing activity on

NAMAs

• But finance for

implementation is still

moving too slowly

• We need to acknowledge

the challenges

• We need to understand the

role of NAMAs in relation to

INDCs

• NAMAs can be robust

building blocks for a future

climate regime

NAMAs and INDCs

7

WHAT CAN INDCS OFFER NAMAS?

• Purpose and high level support

• A sense of urgency

• An integrated approach

• Framework for prioritisation

• Broadening the NAMA concept

WHAT CAN NAMAS OFFER INDCS?

• Implementation tool

• Inputs for INDC development

• MRV systems and awareness

• Channel for accessing finance

• Demonstration of benefits/impacts

• Institutional and individual capacity

Page 8: NAMAs: towards Paris and beyond

The future of NAMAs

• NAMAs will be a tool to bridge the gap between INDCs

and their implementation; between ambition and action.

• After Paris, we expect less emphasis on the

‘supported/domestic’ distinction.

• More work is expected this year on the links between

NAMAs and INDCs, and a NAMA Day in Paris is planned

by UNFCCC.

Discussion questions

Conceptual building blocks

1. How do you see NAMAs in a post 2020 climate regime?

2. What will the short term agenda for NAMAs need to be

after Paris?

3. Does it make sense to refocus the distinction between

domestic/supported?

Practical progress

4. What is needed for NAMAs to demonstrate success?

5. How can we get broader buy-in for NAMAs?

6. How should NAMAs be ‘branded’ in-country?
