The National Association of Manufacturers’ Council of Manufacturing Associations (CMA)hosts two leadership conferences a year. These conferences attract many of the leadingmanufacturing trade associations CEO’s for an opportunity to learn, share and exchangeideas on how to be more effective as association leaders in not only running theirassociations, but also in the political arena. The agendas are put together by their fellowCEOs who serve as directors on the CMA Board and typically have a mix of 60% policy and40% association management. The group puts a high value on their community ofmanufacturing association executives. The over 200 member associations represent justabout every sector of manufacturing.

Dorothy Coleman, VP Tax & Domestic Economic Policy, the NAMDorothy Coleman is vice president of tax and domestic economic policy at the National Associationof Manufacturers (NAM), headquartered in Washington, D.C. Ms. Coleman is responsible forproviding NAM members with important information related to tax issues and representing theNAM’s position to Congress, the Administration and the media. An NAM spokesperson for tax policyissues, she coordinates membership coalitions; prepares testimony, reports and analyses; andresponds to media inquiries. Before taking over as vice president of the Tax Policy Department, sheserved as director of tax policy from April 1998 to April 2000.

Ms. Coleman came to the NAM from Arthur Andersen, where she worked as a manager in theOffice of Federal Tax Services. Prior to her work at Arthur Andersen, she was chief legislativereporter for the Bureau of National Affairs’ Daily Tax Report. She also was a legal editor for BNA’stax management series.

Ms. Coleman received her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and her bachelor ofarts in economics from Manhattanville College in Purchase, N.Y.

Patrick Friel is a partner with Heidrick & StrugglesPatrick Friel is a partner with Heidrick & Struggles and a member of the firm’s Washington, D.C.office. He is a member of the Financial Officers, Government Services and Education & SocialEnterprise practices, and has extensive experience conducting search assignments for executivepositions including general management and financial management.

Patrick currently serves as the managing partner of the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. He is a pastrecipient of the firm’s Global Quality Award, which recognizes superior quality in search execution.

Prior to joining Heidrick & Struggles in 1997, Patrick was the director of corporate staffing with aboutique search firm, where he managed senior-level engagements in the consumer packagedgoods industry.

Earlier in his career, Patrick worked for local governments in Virginia with an emphasis on landplanning and economic development. Patrick remains active in local government affairs.

Education:Patrick received a BS from Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland.

Donna Harman, President & CEO, American Forest & Paper AssociationDonna Harman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Forest & Paper Association(AF&PA), is recognized by industry leaders and policymakers alike as a leading expert on publicpolicy concerning the forest products industry.

As the industry’s voice on public policy at all levels of government, Harman works with AF&PA’s 165members to advance policies that promote a strong and sustainable U.S. forest products industry inthe global marketplace.

Harman has spearheaded a robust industry effort to engage Members of Congress and U.S. agencyofficials to help them make informed decisions on laws and regulations important to the industry’scompetitiveness, including: bioenergy mandates, climate change, increasing energy supply, taxpolicies, green procurement for wood and paper products, and recycling. In addition, Harman carriesthe industry messages to international arenas.

Born in Elkhart, kansas, Harman earned a bachelor’s degree in public affairs from AndersonUniversity and a law degree from American University. She is a member of the District of ColumbiaBar Association, the American Society of Association Executives, and the Society of AmericanForesters. She serves on the Board of Directors for the American Council for Capital Formation,and is Secretary-Treasurer of the Forest Products Industry National Labor ManagementCommittee. She also serves on the Corporate Advisory Council to the International CongressionalConservation Foundation.

Bill Hudson, CEO, Global Cold Chain AllianceJ. William Hudson is President and CEO of the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA), a partnership oforganizations dedicated to the distribution of food commodities worldwide. These organizationsinclude the International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses, an international food logistics tradeassociation, which he has served since 1982; the World Food Logistics Organization; theInternational Association for Cold Storage Construction; and the International RefrigeratedTransportation Association.

Mr. Hudson holds BA and Law degrees from Louisiana State University and is a member of theLouisiana Bar Association, American Bar Association, and Washington, DC Bar Association. Amongnumerous organization affiliations, Mr. Hudson has served as a member of the board of the AmericanSociety of Association Executives and was the founding chairman of the Foundation for InternationalMeetings. Hudson was named as one of the “top 50 trade association leaders” by Washingtonianmagazine. Before becoming president of GCCA, Mr. Hudson was vice president of the TravelIndustry Association and legal counsel for the Door and Hardware Institute. He resides with his wife,Peggy; daughter, Jocelyn; and son, Zachary, in Arlington, Virginia.

Chris Keuleman, Director of Government Relations, International PaperChris Keuleman is Director of Government Relations in International Paper’s Washington, DCoffice.  He joined IP in 2008 and focuses on energy, environmental and regulatory issues while alsolobbying on the full range of priorities for the company, including transportation, tax, trade, andgeneral business issues.  Additionally, Chris works on developing and strengthening IP’s relationshipswith policy-makers, trade associations and interest groups.

Previously, Chris was the Executive Director of the NAHB’s High Production Home Builders Council(HPHBC), an organization comprised of the nation’s largest, most successful home buildingcompanies.  In this role, Chris led a group of CEOs and top executives, guided the group’s legislativeand political strategies and advocated on their behalf.  Before that, Chris served as Political Directorfor the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), acting as a liaison between the NAHB andAdministration officials, members and their staffs and party campaign committees.  Chris also lobbiedCapitol Hill, the Administration and agencies on all industry priorities.

Prior to NAHB, Chris was a political campaign manager on two congressional campaigns, presssecretary for a member of Congress, and worked for a media consulting firm and a grassrootsadvocacy firm.

Chris holds a B.A. in Government from St. Lawrence University and a M.A. in Legislative Affairs fromThe George Washington University.  He and his wife, kristen, reside in Edgewater, MD with their twosons, Henry (7) and Charlie (4).

Keith McCoy, Executive Director of Public Policy, Johnson ControlsMr. McCoy is the Executive Director of Public Policy for Johnson Controls a Fortune 100 globalcompany offering products and services to optimize energy and operational efficiencies of buildings,automotive batteries, electronics and interior systems for automobiles.  In this capacity, he isresponsible for building out an organizational capability in the Power Solution’s business to identify,analyze, manage and proactively respond to the public policy issues of relevance to the company.  Priorto Johnson Controls, he held several positions at the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), thenation’s largest broad-based manufacturing trade association.  During his tenure at the NAM, he led theassociation’s energy and environment department and managed a team of lobbyist on matters beforeCongress and the Administration.  Prior to his work at the NAM, Mr. McCoy held various positions at theAssociated Industries of Massachusetts where he worked on state issues pertaining to energy and theenvironment.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts andwas the Switzer Fellow for environmental studies at Tufts University.

Joseph McGuire, President & CEO, American Home & Appliance ManufacturersJoseph M. McGuire was named President of the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers(AHAM) in January, 1999.  AHAM is the national trade association of the home appliance industryincluding the manufacturers of the vast majority of home appliances sold in the United States as wellas firms that supply and service these manufacturers. AHAM is an accredited StandardsDevelopment Organization.  AHAM is also extensively involved in the development of nationalappliance efficiency laws and regulations, sustainability standards and product safety standards.AHAM is located in Washington, D.C. and was founded in 1967. AHAM’s website is www.aham.org.

Mr. McGuire has vast experience in energy, environmental and consumer product safety policyissues. He has testified numerous times before the U.S. Congress and has represented theappliance industry before major media outlets.  He has led numerous industry coalitions onlegislative issues and has crafted consensus agreements with government, environmental, efficiency,utility and consumer advocacy organizations.

Prior to AHAM, McGuire was Director, Legislative and Regulatory Affairs for AlliedSignal Inc. (nowHoneywell) an advanced technology manufacturer and represented the air-conditioning, refrigerationand home building industries.  He began his career with the U.S. Department of Energy and itspredecessor agency, the Energy Research and Development Administration.He received a Bachelor’s Degree from St. John Fisher College and a Masters Degree in PublicAdministration from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University.  He also holds a Certified AssociationExecutive (CAE) credential.

McGuire currently serves as President of the ASAE Board of Directors and is a Director of theAmerican National Standards Institute.  He formerly served on the National Association ofManufacturers’ Board of Directors and chaired its Council of Manufacturing Associations.  He is amember of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Committee of 100.  He was named one of the topassociation CEOs by CEO Update in 2011.

Chad Moutray, Chief Economist, the NAMChad Moutray is chief economist for the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), where heserves as the NAM’s economic forecaster and spokesperson on economic issues.Prior to joining the NAM, Dr. Moutray was the chief economist and director of economic research forthe Office of Advocacy at the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) from 2002 to 2010. In thatrole, he was responsible for researching the importance of entrepreneurship to the U.S. economyand highlighting various issues of importance to small business owners, policymakers andacademics. He frequently commented on current conditions for small businesses throughprofessional presentations and media interviews. He has appeared on Bloomberg, CNN, FoxBusiness, Fox News, PBS Nightly News, and Reuters television.

In addition to discussing economic and policy trends, his personal research has focused on theimportance of educational attainment to both self-employment and economic growth.Prior to working at the SBA, Dr. Moutray was the dean of the School of Business Administration atRobert Morris College in Chicago, Ill. (now Robert Morris University of Illinois). Under his leadership,the business school had rapid growth, both adding new programs and new campuses. He began thedevelopment of an MBA program that began accepting students after his departure and created aBusiness Institute for students to work with local businesses on classroom projects and internships.

Dr. Moutray is a former board member of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE),where he continues to chair the Manufacturing Roundtable. In addition, he is the former presidentand chairman of the National Economists Club, the local NABE chapter for Washington, D.C. Heholds a Ph.D. in economics from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and bachelor’s andmaster’s degrees in economics from Eastern Illinois University. In 2007, he was named adistinguished alumnus by Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill., where he earned his associate’s degreein business administration.

Susan K. Neely, President and CEO, American Beverage AssociationSusan K. Neely is president and chief executive officer of the American Beverage Association(ABA). The association is the leading policy and public education advocate for the non-alcoholicbeverage industry that employs more than 227,000 people across the country with a direct economicimpact of $118.9 billion.

Neely recognizes the unique power of associations to bring together otherwise competitive membersto help develop sound policy and be part of meaningful solutions.  During her tenure at ABA, Neelyhas worked with ABA membership to further industry’s longstanding commitment to help reducechildhood obesity.  With innovative industry initiatives, ABA members have shown their commitmentto this national public health challenge is significant and will have a lasting and measurable impact.Notably, the industry has voluntarily reduced calories from its beverages sold in schools by 90percent through its national School Beverage Guidelines.  In support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s“Let’s Move!” campaign, the industry announced its Clear on Calories initiative, voluntarily placingclear calorie labels on the front of every bottle, can and pack they produce.

Neely’s professional background encompasses government service in both the executive andlegislative branches of federal government, as well as state government, and significant health carepolicy and advocacy experience.  A native of Iowa, Neely holds an undergraduate degree injournalism and French civilization from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree in publicadministration from Drake University.  She has been elected the first woman president of both the100-year-old Washington Rotary Club and the 108-year-old University Club of Washington, D.C.Neely currently serves as secretary treasurer of the board of the American Society of AssociationExecutives, and chair of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Association Committee of 100.She received the 2011 Global Citizen of the Year Award from the Whitehead School of Diplomacyand International Relations at Seton Hall University.  She is the mother of two children, Eve (age 15)and Ben (age 12).

Aric Newhouse, SVP Government Relations and Policy, the NAMAric Newhouse is the senior vice president for policy and government relations at the NationalAssociation of Manufacturers (NAM). In addition to serving as the NAM’s lead governmentrelations staff member, he is responsible for the development and implementation of the NAM’sbroad policy agenda.

Mr. Newhouse joined the NAM in 2007 after more than 11 years of service on Capitol Hill. He beganhis career with Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH) and then worked with Congressman Michael G. Oxley(R-OH) as a legislative correspondent and legislative assistant. He joined the staff of Senator GeorgeV. Voinovich (R-OH) in 1999, where he worked for eight years as a legislative assistant, then as thelegislative director and, finally, as chief of staff. As chief of staff, Mr. Newhouse was responsible for allpersonnel, management, political, press and policy matters.In recent years, Mr. Newhouse has received significant recognition for his leadership and influence inthe lobbying world. He was chosen as CEO Update’s Top Lobbyist and was named to theWashingtonian’s “Top 40 Under 40.”

Mr. Newhouse graduated from Miami University in Ohio with a bachelor of arts in political scienceand a bachelor of science in secondary social studies education. He also holds a master’s degree ininternational affairs from The George Washington University.

Gary Shapiro, President and CEO, Consumer Electronics AssociationGary Shapiro is president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)®, the U.S. tradeassociation representing more than 2,000 consumer electronics companies and owning andproducing the continent’s largest annual tradeshow, the International CES®.

Shapiro led the industry in its successful transition to HDTV. He co-founded and chaired the HDTVModel Station and served as a leader of the Advanced Television Test Center (ATTC). He is a charterinductee to the Academy of Digital Television Pioneers, and received its highest award as the industryleader most influential in advancing HDTV. He focused on the need for and led the effort to obtain the2009 cut-off date of analog broadcasting.

As chairman of the Home Recording Rights Coalition (HRRC), Shapiro led the manufacturers’ battleto preserve the legality of recording technology and consumer fair use rights. Shapiro has held manyexhibition industry leadership posts, and received the exhibition industry’s highest honor, the PinnacleAward. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Northern Virginia Technology Council, theState Department’s Advisory Committee on International Communications and Information Policy,and the Board of Directors of the Washington Economic Club. He has served as a member of theCommonwealth of Virginia’s Commission on Information Technology and on the Board of Visitors ofGeorge Mason University. Shapiro also has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency as a “mastermind” for his initiative in helping to create the Industry Cooperative for OzoneLayer Protection (ICOLP).

Shapiro leads a staff of 140 employees and thousands of industry volunteers and has testified beforeCongress on technology and business issues more than 20 times. He has received annualrecognition from The Hill since 2006 as a “top lobbyist” in Washington. Also, Washington Lifemagazine has named him one of the 100 most influential people in Washington, D.C. CEA has wonmany awards as a family friendly employer and one of the best places in Virginia to work.Shapiro authored the 2011 bestselling book The Comeback: How Innovation Will Restore theAmerican Dream (Beaufort).

Prior to joining the association, Shapiro was an associate at the law firm of Squire Sanders. He alsohas worked on Capitol Hill, as an assistant to a member of Congress. Dan Steen,Vice President of Government Affairs, Owens-Illinois, Inc.Dan Steen serves as Vice President of Government Affairs for Owens-Illinois, Inc. (O-I), the world’sleading glass container manufacturer. Based in the Washington, D.C. area, he provides strategicdirection for the government affairs efforts of the Company in its four regions:  Europe, NorthAmerica, South America and Asia Pacific. He coordinates O-I’s global engagement on behalf ofeffective environmental and health laws, as well as the wide range of regulatory and tax policies thatimpact all manufacturers. He is particularly active on behalf of O-I’s efforts to gain more post-consumer glass through effective public recycling policies. He leads the Company’s outreach tonon-governmental organizations and is involved in the Company’s community affairs engagements.

Dan is on the California Manufacturing and Technology Association’sBoard of Directors and the Board’s Executive Committee. He is works with the European Associationfor Packaging and the Environment (EUROPEN) and is regularly engaged with the European glasscontainer federation (FEVE). He is the Chair of the U.S.-Poland Business Council.

Dan is a 1984 graduate of Mary Washington College (now University of Mary Washington), a leadingpublic, liberal arts university located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and received his JD from theUniversity of Virginia School of Law in 1987. He has been appointed to consecutive terms on theUniversity of Mary Washington’s Board of Visitors by Governors Mark Warner and Tim kaine, and hecurrently serves as Rector of the University Board.

Prior to joining O-I in 1999, Dan was with the Washington, D.C. office of a national law firm, ReedSmith Shaw & McClay. He is a former Chair of the Young Lawyers and Administrative Law Sectionsof the Bar Association of the District of Columbia.

Jay Timmons, President and CEO, the NAMJay Timmons is president and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the largestmanufacturing association in the United States representing small and large manufacturers in everyindustrial sector. He became NAM president in January 2011.

Mr. Timmons is a leading advocate for the nearly 12 million Americans employed directly inmanufacturing, educating the public and policymakers on issues that affect this critical sector of theU.S. economy. He promotes a broad-based “Manufacturing Means Jobs!” agenda for maintainingU.S. competitiveness by lifting unnecessary burdens on manufacturing, including excessive taxationand regulation, the high cost of health care, expensive litigation and soaring energy costs.

He is driven by the principles instilled in him by his roots in the manufacturing town of Chillicothe,Ohio, where his grandfather worked at a Mead plant for nearly four decades and where he witnessedmanufacturing’s ability to raise the quality of life for families and communities. Prior to his appointment as NAM president, Mr. Timmons was executive vice president beginning in2008. In 2005, he joined the NAM as senior vice president of policy and government relations. Hisprevious experience includes serving as chief of staff to Congressman, Governor and Senator GeorgeAllen (R-VA) from 1991 to 2002, and a term as executive director of the National Republican SenatorialCommittee during the 2004 election cycle. When he first came to Washington in the 1980s, he servedas press secretary to Congressman Jim Martin (R-NC) and later Alex McMillan (R-NC).

A passionate advocate for the adoption of companion animals, Mr. Timmons is a member of theWashington Humane Society Board of Directors and served as its chairman from 2006 to 2010. He isalso a member of the Business Industry Political Action Committee (BIPAC) Executive Committeeand the Board of Directors of Local Finance Solutions, Inc. Connie Tipton, President & CEO, International Dairy Foods AssociationDuring her career of more than 30 years with IDFA, Connie Tipton has held a leadership role invirtually all areas of the association, including legislative and international affairs, economic policyanalysis, public relations, marketing, education and training, and trade shows. She helped to launchthe annual Capitol Hill Ice Cream Party and encouraged legislation that created the famous “MilkMustache” campaign. Tipton also led successful legislative campaigns to lessen governmentinvolvement in regulations that reduce dairy product marketability.

A member of the Agricultural Technical Advisory Committee to the Secretary of Agriculture, Tiptonalso serves on the boards of the Canadian American Business Council and BIPAC, a broad,business-oriented political action committee.
