An acquaintance of mine asked his 7 year old cousin“what do you want to do when you grow up” to whichhe replied “win the Nobel Prize for Literature ..... or bea dinosaur”. Both brilliant ideas – it shows a greatimagination but are we in danger of stamping out thisflexibility kids have that sees the impossible aspossible?

We want to protect our children and try and give themthe best they can have – university, well paid jobs agood lifestyle. That’s all laudable – I am as guilty asthe next for doing that – but if we don’t encouragethem to live the dream, to see things in black andwhite rather than shades of grey – we won’t find theanswers to lead us away from situations such as theeconomic downturn we find ourselves in right now.The late Steve Jobs in his 2005 address to graduatingstudents at Stanford University said two things thathave stuck on my mind and that I hope to encouragemy boys to live by. The first was “Don’t let the noise ofothers’ opinions drown out your inner voice” – howmany times have we allowed that to happen andregretted it. The second was his closing words “Stayhungry. Stay foolish.” – worth noting because it is soeasy to slip into a rut that is difficult to get out of.

So the next time your kids say they want to win theNobel Prize for Literature or be a dinosaur, take a raincheck on pointing out what may seem the obviousanswer to you – you never know they could thepalaeontologist that brings dinosaurs back to life!

JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN

(7th October).

Rowan Atkinson returns asthe bumbling, calamatousJohnny English in thissequel to the 2006 film. This time around, English isrecalled by the new head of MI7 (Gillian Anderson) tostop an international ring of assassins’ plot to kill theChinese Premier. Can English save the world, and savehis reputation? A curious choice for a sequel, considering the first one was awful, and this secondfilm is only slightly better. The jokes are predictable, along with the plot, but it does raise the occasionalgrin, and at 1 hour 40 mins is too brief to trulyoffend you.CP Rating: HH

REAL STEEL (14th October).

Set in a world where robot boxing hasreplaced the human equivalent in terms ofpopularity, “Real Steel” follows a down-on-his-luck promoter (Hugh Jackman) who, with thehelp of his estranged son (Dakota Goyo),makes one last bid for the big time with aworn out, tiny sparring robot he has fixedup. Perhaps it’s the charisma of the stars(Jackman and Goyo are one likeable duo),but “Real Steel” manages to be a veryentertaining and at times thrilling ride. Itmay rip off every “Rocky” film to the letter, but we defy you not to be cheering whenthe inevitable ‘final fight’ comes along.CP Rating: HHH

THE THREE MUSKETEERS

(12th October).

“Percy Jackson” star Logan Lerman takeson the role of D’Artagnon in this 3Dadaptation of the classic tale, as theyoung swordsman attempts to join thelegendary Musketeers (Luke Evans, RayStephenson and Matthew Macfayden) asthey try to defend the French crownfrom threats both foreign (OrlandoBloom English traitor) and domestic(Christoph Waltz’s devious cardinal). Truly awful, expensive effects areused to make everyone look utterly ridiculous. All actors involved try tokeep a straight face through the terrible dialogue, culminating in alaughable airship battle (yes, in a Musketeers movie). Avoid.CP Rating: H

POM WONDERFUL PRESENTS:THE GREATEST MOVIE EVERSOLD (14th October).

“Supersize Me” documentarianMorgan Spurlock turns his attentionsto the world of advertising- not justcommercials, but also productplacement within movies, TV and even our everydaylives. Spurlock attempts to make the documentary solelythrough advertising, and as we delve into the world ofcorporate sponsorship, we see the intricate strategiesbehind the advertising we see every day. A fascinatingdoc, expertly told by Spurlock, who never preaches, butrather observes what drives us to go out and buysomething based on seeing a 10 second ad. A littlelighthearted perhaps, but riveting nonetheless.CP Rating: HHHH

thought that I would be writing a recipecomplementary to our autumn weeks and

months. I believe I have conjured somethingthat will meet our expectations of thetraditional roast as well as the unexpectedIndian summer we are presentlyexperiencing. This dish has been inspired bymy recent disappointment at a local Hertfordpub, part of a chain. No pun intended, buttheir monkfish dish lacked both spirit andpunch. For best results season the fish theday before and cook the garlic pumpkin.

Blackened Cajun RoastedMonkfish with Coconut andChilli Pepper Sauce served withRoasted Garlic Pumpkin andseasonal Greens

Preheat oven 200C. Serving a party of 4,each fillet of monkfish should be 150g/5ozand trimmed removing the grey membrane.Season each one the day before with ½ a tspper fillet of Blackened Cajun seasoning andrefrigerate, Next you will need to wash androast a 150g Pumpkin, + a garlic bulbwrapped in foil, place on a baking tray andcook for 30 to 40min or until tender. Scoopout the flesh and seeds and place remainingpumpkin + the garlic in a food processor untilsmooth, season with s &p cool andrefrigerate. *The garlic will take considerablyless time to cook 20min or so.

Prepare all the ingredients for the sauce inadvance that way you will be able to keep thefish warm and serve immediately when thesauce is finished.

Day 2: Preheat oven 180c Heat 2tbsp ofcoconut oil in a heavy-based frying pan with

heatproof or removablehandles, suitable for theoven. Add the filletsand cook for about3min on one side, thenturn over. Transfer tothe oven and cook forabout 5min or until firm

The base of the sauce is inessence a coconut béchamel using 15gbutter, 15g flour, 200ml coconut milk, freshlygrated nutmeg, s &p 1 clove of garliccrushed or finely chopped 1 tsp soy sauce.

Prepare separately: 5g small hot red chillies, deseeded and finely chopped, 10g hot greenjalapeno peppers again deseeded and finelychopped, and set aside.

In a saucepan melt butter and stir in flour tomake a roux. Cook over a low heat for minand half. Stirring all the time with a smallwhisk, add the coconut milk bring to the boilthen immediately season with nutmeg, s &pStirring continuously simmer for 10 min

In another saucepan heat 50g butter until itturns fragrant and golden brown, toss in thered and green chillies and immediately addto the béchamel.

On a heated plate place the reheated garlicpumpkin in the centre in circular shape. Addthe fish, cover with sauce and garnish withfresh herbs. Serve with seasonal vegetablese.g. broccoli. Until next time enjoy! AJ

ROAD SAFETY ISSUESDavidBurrowes

oad safety has been a big issue for me over theyears as your local MP. The fact that roadcrashes are the biggest killers of young people

is reason enough. I have also been spurred by thetireless campaigning of my constituents George andGiuletta Galli-Atkinson. Following the death of theirdaughter Livia at the hands of a dangerous driver theyhave championed road safety issues. It has led to anational award to commend traffic police officers'excellence in family liaison and investigation of roadcrashes. I will be co hosting the Livia Award ceremonywith my predecessor Stephen Twigg next month. It hasalso led to the 'Safe Drive Stay Alive' initiative which isagain taking place at the Millfield Theatre this monthand helps local 6th formers understand the dangerson our road by hearing from those on the front line -emergency services and victims.

Finally, the Galli-Atkinsons have worked with me for thelast 5 years in a campaign to plug the gap in lawbetween the sentence for killing someone through

dangerous driving andcausing serious injury. Wehave just heard the goodnews that after I unsuccessfullyintroducing an amendment to theRoad Safety Bill in 2006 the Government have nowfinally agreed to increase the sentence for causingserious injury by dangerous driving. It is an example ofthe fruits of years of hard campaigning and theinfluence constituents can have locally and nationally.

Talking about long hard work and service to ourcommunity, I was delighted to attend the centenarycelebrations of the 3rd Southgate Scout Group thismonth. Roger and Hilary Smith have led the scoutsand guides for a combined total of nearly 100 years.Countless numbers of young people have benefitedfrom the values of discipline, commitment, respect forothers and service so much needed in society todayand exemplified by Roger and Hilary's character andleadership.

A new flu vaccine has to be produced each year. This is because the flu virus continuallychanges and different types of flu viruscirculate each winter.

In February each year, the World HealthOrganization (WHO) makes an assessment of thestrains of flu virus that are most likely to becirculating during the following winter in thenorthern hemisphere. Based on this assessment,WHO recommends which three flu strains thevaccines should contain for the forthcoming winter.Vaccine manufacturers then produce flu vaccinesbased on the WHO recommendations. These flujabs are used for the countries in the northernhemisphere, not just the UK.

Production of the vaccine starts in March eachyear after the WHO announcement. The vaccine isusually available in the UK from September.

How the vaccine is madeThe flu vaccine contains three different types of fluvirus (usually two A types and one B type). Formost vaccines, the three strains of the viruses aregrown in hens’ eggs. The viruses are then killed(deactivated) and purified before being made intothe vaccine.

How it protects youThe vaccine causes your body’s immune system tomake antibodies to the flu virus.

Antibodies are proteins that recognise and fight offgerms that have invaded your blood, such asviruses. If you catch the flu virus later on, theimmune system will recognise it and immediatelyproduce the antibodies to fight it.

It may take 10–14 days for your immune system torespond fully after you have had the flu injection.

The antibodies against the flu strains will graduallydecrease over time and the flu strains can changefrom year to year. You need to have a flu jab everyyear to ensure the best protection against the lateststrain of the virus.

Are there any side effects? The flu jab does not usually cause side effects.Sometimes, it can cause mild fever and slightmuscle aches for a day or so.

The flu jab cannot cause flu as there are no activeviruses in the vaccine. However, people sometimescatch other flu-like viruses, or very occasionallycould catch flu before the vaccine takes effect.

Allergic reactions to the vaccine are rare.

I

n this article I want to talk about a few

business tips that everyone should

know but I’m constantly amazed that so

few do.

Firstly Word Templates, if you’re a small

business owner or freelancer then you will

undoubtedly be sending out the same

documents on a regular basis, quotes &

invoices for instance, well you could save

yourself a whole lot of time if you create a

proper Word Template for each one. A

template in word processing terms is a

document with

some settings

already in place.

When you first

open Microsoft

Word it gives you a

new document.

This document is

an in-built

template. Well

you can also

create your own

C u s t o m

T e m p l a t e s

which have all

your styles &

setting saved,

the important

things to note

are when you

save as a

template your file will have a .dotx extension

name & you should not save them with your

documents but in their own folder. It’s

important to keep them separately, you will

probably already have a ‘Templates’ folder

on your p.c & if you keep all your templates

together they won’t become corrupted.

Now the joy of having all your templates at

hand is when you open Word & click on ‘New’

you can select the template you wish to use,

you can also insert a date that automatically

updates and a table that totals amounts for

you, just like an excel file. I really advise

spending some time setting up your

templates properly or get red desk to do it for

you.

Another important point about invoices is

once created you should really be saving the

file as a PDF and sending your customer a

.pdf not a word file. A .pdf file cannot be

altered so you know the document you’ve

sent cannot be changed. This is also very

important if sending your C.V., if you send it

as a .pdf you know all your formatting is not

going to jump around the page when read by

the recipient.

Finally on a slightly different note, I cannot

believe how many people do not know about

the BCC line on email address bar. The

amount of emails I get where there are

hundreds of email addresses that I have to

scroll through before I get down to the

message. If you add all your email

addresses into the BCC ‘Blind

Carbon Copy’ then the

recipients cannot see

everyone else’s addresses.

If you need help with any of the aboveplease email me at [email protected] me on Twitter @reddeskVAFind me on Facebook Red Desk VAwww.reddesk.co.uk

s I sit in my office in Harpenden with theautumnal sun shining through thewindow I am reminded old stock market

expression “Sell in May and go away, don’tcome back until St Leger’s Day”. Well,Masked Marvel won the St Leger on 10thSeptember and it would take a super hero tounravel the current state of the financialmarkets! I’m no super hero but I thought Imight have a go at helping de-mystify thesavings market at a time when interest ratesare at an all time low but inflation is eatingaway the value of any cash that you have.

What would havehappened if you hadfollowed the oldadage? During Maythe FTSE 100 index (ameasure of UK shareprices that is oftenquoted in the press)fluctuated between5800 and 6000, so let’stake an average of 5900 for the month, andthe price on Friday the 9th Sep was around5200. Hence, following the adage this yearyou would be about 12% better off, however,if you had done the same in 2010 you wouldhave been slightly worse off and in 2009 alot worse off! This just goes to show thatmost of us need professional help whenlooking to save for the future.

One of the most misunderstood ways ofsaving for the future is by taking out apension. As soon as the word is mentionedmost people’s eyes glaze over and rightly soas the pension industry has developed anastounding amount of jargon to describewhat they do! I will try to simplify………

A pension is really just a long term savingsaccount that has a number of tax and otherbenefits depending on what the governmentof the day decides….and herein lies someof the complexity as each new governmentdecides to tinker with the rules!

Most of us come across the pensionindustry if we work for a large organisation.Historically most company schemes werefinal salary schemes……..your pension paidto you was a function of how many yearsyou had worked and what your final salarywas. This is called a defined benefit scheme

and was widely used byemployers to attract and retaingood people. Unfortunately, most companies have stoppedoffering this due to newaccounting rules brought in bythe last government. Insteadthey may offer a scheme wherethe contribution is know eachmonth but the final value will not

be known until you retire.

Even if you are not in a company schemeyou can set up your own personal pensionwhere you can either make monthlycontributions or a lump sum of up to£50,000 each year. Why would I do that Ihear you say when the investment market isso uncertain at the moment..........the answerto that will be in next month’s article!

If you can’t wait a month call one of ourexperts for a free consultation on 01582715777

How to... tile a bathroomInteriorsoday’s tiles provide an almost unlimitedchoice of colours, patterns and textures andTile Depot offers a selection to suit

everyone’s taste and budget. The UK’s largest independenttile, stone and wood retailerhas given us this handyguide to make tiling easy foranyone in a weekend...

ToolsMake sure you have the righttools - a tile cutter and nibbles, fine sandpaper, grout and adhesive spreaders, sponges, cloths, abucket of water and a fantastic new inventioncalled Tile Go,which does awaywith the need for awooden batten inorder to get thatall-important firstrow of tilesstraight, withoutthe risk of bursting pipes or hitting electrical wires.

PreparationThe walls must be clean, dry and smooth, so anyflaking paint or old wallpaper should be removed.

Set out the tilesThis depends largely on the size and shape of theroom considering objects, such as windows. Workout where the bottom line of whole tiles will be andfix Tile Go to the wall using the self adhesive tabs, making sure it’s perfectly straight using the built-inspirit level. The first join should be at or near thecentre of the room. Set out the first row of tiles onthe Tile Go before fixing them to the wall, workingfrom the centre out towards the edges, makingsure the ones you’ll need to cut will be big enoughto work with.

Fix the tilesSpread the adhesive on the wall in workablesections. Place each whole tile onto the adhesiveand use small sliding movements to position it.

Place a spacer next to the tile and carry on thisprocess throughout the room, making sure thetiles are flat and level. Wipe off any excessadhesive with a damp cloth or sponge and leavethem to dry.

Making the cutsHold each tile against the gap, mark and cut itusing a tile cutter and carefully sand any roughedges. Apply adhesive to each tile and fix in place, then clean off any excess and leave to dry beforeremoving any protruding spacers.

Apply the groutPrepare the mixture as described on the

packaging. Spread the groutover the tiles with a grout floatat about a metre at a time. Workacross the tiles diagonally andat a 45 degree angle to pushthe grout mix into the joints. Usea damp sponge to wipe off anyexcess as you go, repeat the

process and when the grout is dry, polish the tileswith a clean dry cloth. Finally, use waterproofsealant where the tiles join baths and otherfittings.

Tile Depot has branches in Enfield andWhetstone. For further information or advice,to check out the latest ranges and to buy tiles, tools and accessories, pop into your localstore, call Enfield on 0208 363 4400 orWhetstone on 0208 445 9488.

looring is a huge element of a room andwhen you choose a new floor it’s probablysomething that you’re going to have to live

with for an average of 10 years. Here are somegreat flooring ideas for every corner of your homefrom ceramic and stone to wood, paint and woolfrom interiors expert Sacha Petrie.

Around the world in 20 tile designs

We don’t have a greattradition of usingceramic tiles on livingroom floors in thiscountry, simplybecause it’s too cold!As domestic heatingsystems get better thetrend for tiles in roomsother than the entrancehall and bathroom israpidly changing. Itcould also havesomething to do withthe ease andaffordability of travel tocountries who thinkfitted carpet is one of the strangest Britishconcept of style. In a celebration of global tiledesign, Original Style the specialist tilemanufacturers have launched a fabulous newrange of hand finished ceramic floor tiles thatreflect the most popular designs and patternsfrom Assyria to Avignon. The tiles are not massproduced and are be made especially to order intheir Devon Studios. Work with an interior

designer to choose the perfect colours and layoutthat complement your home and invest in someunderfloor heating.

Hide and chic

Natural hide rugs look stunning and feel greatbeneath bare toes. The use of natural hides asfloor coverings is as old as man itself. Naturalcolouring and texture suits all styles of interiorsbut if you want something a bit different try amock zebra print. When you buy a hide rug, don’tbuy cheap. Cheap hides can smell like Yetis andmoult like a dogs in summer. Buy from areputable source and you will enjoy them formany years to come.

Natural beauty

If you like the idea of natural hide on the floor butthe animal shape is just not your thing, why notconsider having it hand stitched into a bespokerug or wall to wall carpet? Ask an interior designerto help you choose the right size and colours forthe room and enjoy the fact that no one else in theworld will have anything like it that is exactly thesame as yours.

BARROWELL GREENCAR PARKAs many of you will know a car park was formedmany years ago in the very wide verge beside theClowes Playing Field, principally for the use of thevery active Football and Cricket Clubs, whosemembers fill this car park at weekends and whowould otherwise park in the surrounding roads.

The sports clubs recently heard quite by chancethat the Council had determined this car park was“surplus to requirements” and was to dispose ofthis by tender for development. Neither theSports Clubs nor the surrounding residents hadbeen advised of this proposal. The admitted andsole reason for the sale of this land was to raisecapital.

As soon as they were aware of this they informeda number of pressure groups, the ResidentsAssociation being one, and the Ward Councillorsimmediately set in motion a “Call-In” procedure. This enabled Councillors and interested parties toattend an Overview and Scrutiny Committee andquestion the appropriate Cabinet Members ontheir proposals. The “Call-In” was held on 26September and the Ward Councillors, representatives from the Residents Association, the Sports Clubs and resident neighbours spokeeloquently about the need to retain this car parkfor many reasons. The need to avoid extensiveon street parking, the need to keep a “green”buffer between the road and the playing fields, the need to keep all the mature trees, andenvironmental damage incurred if further housingdevelopment proceeded.

Many of the Council’s arguments were discreditedand clearly not based on facts. Surveys hadbeen carried out in a very casual fashion and noconsultation had been undertaken withsurrounding neighbours or the users.

However, disappointingly the proposal was not“referred back” for further consideration andclearly some members of panel had made uptheir minds before the meeting and it all wentalong party lines.

There is however further discussion to take place, principally the possible provision of alternativeparking within the sports field.

Planning approval will need to be obtained for anyfuture development and the Chairman felt thatmany of the points of objection raised wouldagain be raised at this time. However we feel withthe sale of land for development the Council iseffectively giving approval to the main planningissue of “Change of Use”.

he “Twilight” star on the success ofthe franchise, and striking out on hisrecent action movie, “Abduction”.

He’s known for more supernatural exploitsthrough the“Twilight”franchise, butrecentlyHollywood starTaylor Lautnerwent out on hisown to star in“Abduction”,oppositeSigourney Weaverand Alfred Molina, playing a youngman on the run from both the CIA andthe mob. “This was really a huge stepfor me because it’s very different fromanything that I’ve done before but Ithink the biggest difference here isthat the cast we were surrounded byin this movie was unbelievable... Ireally couldn’t have done it withoutthem. I learned so much from justwatching these guys work, it’sbeen a wonderfulexperience for me.”

It’s the first of two majormovies, with the first partof the final “Twilight”instalment, “BreakingDawn, out next month. The ‘Twi-Hards’ areknown for their ferocioussupport of the franchise, and Lautner is very grateful for it. “It’s wonderful tohave the type of support we’ve always enjoyed onthese movies. The fans are very committed, they’ve

responded great to every movie, and I just hope withthe next two we can deliver what they are hoping for.”

With all this success and his obvious good looks, many are comparing him to superstar and new

friend Tom Cruise. Is he flattered bythe comparisons to the biggest ofall stars? “I wouldn’t say we’re bestfriends but I have ran into him a fewtimes and I guess I can technicallysay I’ve worked with him once for theMTV Movie Awards” he says, “butthose are some mighty, mighty shoesto fill. I would give anything to have atenth of the career that Tom Cruisehas had”

Stardom is his main goal right now,but Lautner also hopes to finish off hiseducation one day. “Right now it’s verybusy and I feel like I’m living my dreamright now” he explains. “This what I’vewanted to do for a very long time and Ihave to pinch myself because I’m not

quite sure if this is real. But yeah, that’s always in theback of my mind. I enrolled in my community collegeas soon as I finished High School and then justbecame too busy but that definitely interests me.”

“Abduction” is out now and “BreakingDawn: Part One” is released in November.
