At First UMC we believe that all Christians are called to serve
the Lord
using their gifts, talents and abilities in an area of service
inside or
outside the church about which they are passionately
concerned.
In the past we have given people the opportunity to volunteer to
be
available to serve in over 120 possible ways in and through our
church
which is quite amazing. We usually embark on this journey in
Novem-
ber of each year through the Every Person in Ministry Forms.
Be-
cause our cycle of making nominations to serve on various
administra-
tive committees and ministry teams begins in August for the
coming
year, our leadership team decided to change the timing of this
process
this year. You should have received your 2019 Every Person in
Minis-
try Forms by now. If you have not received one, plenty are
available
in the church office. Please turn in your forms by Sunday,
August 5.
Thank you!

We are encouraging all who are a part of the First UMC family to
identify and make available their spir-
itual gifts for the up-building of the kingdom of God and the
strengthening of the ministry and out-
reach of the church. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians
that he did not want them to be unin-
formed about spiritual gifts, that spiritual gifts are given by
the Holy Spirit and they are given for the
common good of all in the Body of Christ. “You are the Body of
Christ and individually members of
it” (I Cor. 12:27).
We encourage you to prayerfully consider how God wants to use
you through the ministry of First
UMC and indicate that on your “Every Person in Ministry” form.
We request those commitments be
turned in on Sunday, August 5. If you need more time, they may
be turned in at your earliest conven-
ience. We are moving this commitment process from the late fall
to the present time to better coin-
cide with our nominations process.
We want people to serve in positions that utilize their
spiritual gifts, personal style and God-given pas-
sions. In those places of service, we think people will
experience joy and fulfillment. This is a prayer-
based approach rather than an arm-twisting approach.
Many opportunities for service are available in the month of
August including Family Promise August 5
-12 and our Back-to-school and Blessing of the Backpacks Sunday
on August 26.
Looking ahead to September we are planning an information
session to update the congregation on
the proposals that will be presented for consideration at the
special called General Conference in St.
Louis in February, 2019. That date will be forthcoming.
Be sure to mark your calendar for our 2018 Sprinkle Preaching
Mission with our guest preacher, Rev.
Paul Christy, who is the pastor of First UMC, Hickory. Plan to
come and invite others. September 30—
October 2, 2018.
Blessings,
Pastor Glenn

DEEP ROOTS COMMUNITY GARDENS
The 2018 Farmer’s Almanac predictions for August: Continued
sultry/hot and high humidity 1-11 with scattered showers in the
afternoons. 12 – 23 fair , continued heat and scattered showers. 24
– 27, widespread thunderstorms. 28-31 fair and pleasant. What to
plant for August: Remember to go a couple of inches deeper with the
seeds to protect them from the heat. Green beans endive, peas,
spinach, more cucumbers, kale, radishes. (Radishes can be mixed
with carrot seeds and a little sand and spread out together.)
Broccoli seeds planted in July can be trans-planted toward the end
of August for your fall garden. What a summer this has been! A wet,
wet spring and a dry, dry summer! Our poor vegetables don’t know
what has hit them! . We have grown only Heir-loom tomatoes at the
Storehouse garden this year and they are enormous! We have a pink
variety, a yel-low variety and even a purple variety this year. In
an effort to keep them protected from the high temper-atures, we
have constructed a row cover over the garden and it seems to be
helping quite a bit. We have had some gardeners ask us what causes
bitter cucumbers and this is what we have found:. Cucumbers need
plenty of water, but do not like to be soaked. Occasionally put
your finger into the soil next to the plant to test the moisture
level. If it is dry past the first joint of your finger, get out
the watering can. If you can’t pull your finger out, you are over
watering. Inconsistent watering leads to the bitterness. Water
slowly in the morning or early afternoon, ( after 4 pm) avoiding
the leaves. Water droplets on the leaves become magnifying glasses
to the sun, burning the plant. You can also spray the vines with a
sugar water solution to attract more bees and set more fruit.
Cucumbers may not set fruit because the first flowers were all
male. Both female and male flowers must be blooming at the same
time.-----be patient. Our wa-termelon and cantaloupe are doing well
and our pumpkins, (thanks to John and Reid Huneycutt who grew the
plants for us) are making a wonderful showing so far! Our
blackberries at the Clement garden have produced more than 40
pounds of big delicious blackberries. The different groups
frequenting the gar-dens have definitely enjoyed them this year.
Cooking Classes: ( thanks to Alice Hanes, Sarah Wood, Beth Dixon,
Pattie Harris and all those attending) June, 20th we held a class
in honor of the blueberry: Blueberry Jam, Blueberry Salad,
Blueberry smoothies and ice cream, Blueberry bread, etc.
July 31st We honored the tomato: Veggie noodles with tomato
sauce, Tomato pie, Tomato, basil, mosserella, and olive oil
appetiz-ers,Tomato cake We will also be holding one at the end of
August on Harvesting: Please look for our announce-ments on
this.
We have so very many people to thank for their continued help:
Scotty Seaford who faithfully supplies us with our wood chips, Phil
Morris who continues to keep our watering system at the Clement
garden in tip-top shape,Jesse Ledbetter who manages most of the
raised beds at the Storehouse location and brings his young
Agriculturel boys out every Monday to weed, harvest and do whatever
else that needs to be done. Ray Rafe ( who works tirelessly to keep
things going smoothly) and Beth Dixon ( Beth has a magic hand when
it comes to the flowers and we have had so many compliments on them
this year. We are hoping to become a pollinator garden for bees in
the near future.)my grand son, D.J. Hatley who has decided to work
for us this summer. It is such a blessing to have his support, and
of course, Dave who is always there to help with whatever else
needs to be done! God is good All the Time! All the Time God is
good! Deep Roots Garden Committee
Summer is quickly winding down and we have had an AWESOME one!
We have served over 40 children this summer and it has been amazing
to see old friendships rekindled (summers are like a giant family
reunion) and new friendships made. The kids have been busy doing
arts and crafts, playing outside, going on trips and learning A LOT
about Jesus and the love He has for us. We would like to invite you
to a showcase of what we’ve learned this summer on August 31 at
6:30pm in the FLC. Please join us for food and fun! After School
Care is ENROLLING now for Kindergarten to 8th grade. We provide
after school care, all day cares on workdays and out of school

really well and we are excited to have almost 70 kids joining us
this fall for the new school year. We offer 2,3, and 4 year old

Take One…and Take Heart. Give One, and Give Hope.
Well…have you missed us? The Chancel Choir has taken a
much-deserved vacation from leading
the music for the 10:55 worship service this summer. After years
of devoted volunteer service, the
choir members are experiencing worship from the other side of
the chancel. Isn’t it wonderful to
hear their voices all around you during the singing of the
hymns? I hope you have enjoyed the vari-
ety of inspiring Special Music during the month of July and into
early August. This church is so very
blessed to have talented musicians willing to share their gifts.
But if you are a big choir fan, as I am,
do not worry! We will be back praising God with our music in the
Chancel on August 12.
How about you? Are you a former choir member whose time off has
extended a little too long? Do
you remember the days when you used to love to sing? Come back
and join us! Coming back to
choir will be the most fun you can have while using the talents
God gave you. Or maybe you are
new to this awesome way of praising the Lord. Have you ever
thought, “Wow, singing in the choir
looks like it might be fun! Maybe I should give it a try.” If
you have, I’m sure you have questions.
Send me an e-mail, ([email protected]), or give me a
call, (336-692-8531). I’ll be happy to
tell you all about the joy you have been missing! Wednesday,
August 8, is just around the corner.
Lou I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully
with me. Psalm 13:6

Looking to get involved with a ministry? Prayer makes a
difference ! We have two Prayer Minis-
tries at FUMC. The larger of the two is #1The Prayer Chain and
we have 60 e-mail members. They will
receive emails as we receive requests. All they do is pray for
the requested person and issue. We also
have five telephone members. They will receive a phone call with
the request and pass it onto the
next person. If they are not home & have an answering
machine you are to leave the request and you
continue calling until you get a “live” person. ***Then, that
person will take over and call the NEXT
person. If that next person isn't at home they leave a message
and go to the next person and so on.
Prayer Ministry #2 is Prayer Time. This small group (5-7) meets
in the Sanctuary each Thursday at
4:00 pm for about an hour. We sit where ever and pray for the
request we have received for that
week or month for each individual. We have soft music playing in
the background and our candles are
lit as we silently pray and lift the needs to our Heavenly
Father. Service on these ministries is very
important and we greatly appreciate each member and the
opportunity to come before the Lord with
our petitions for each request. If you feel led to join this
ministry, please contact Lillian Sharpe @

SUMMER WELLNESS WALKING:
Twenty nine FUMC’ers registered for a rather sponta-
neous summer walking program. The Wellness Walk-
ers endured numerous rainy days as well as 90 + tem-
peratures yet managed to achieve almost 15 million
steps. The overall average steps per week was 51,325.
WAY TO GO, WELLNESS WALKERS!

twist coming to FUMC'S WALKING program this fall. ) FUMC'S Fall
2018 Wellness Walking program will
begin Monday, September the 10th and will run for
12 weeks. The Wellness Walking program encourages
all adults to stay active in order to help maintain
health and mobility. The individual progress seen in
the group has been phenomenal! We encourage all
FUMCers to join Wellness Walkers. FUMC will pro-
vide new walkers with their first pedometer, if desire.
For any questions, please contact Kristen Paterson at
336-936-9502 or email [email protected].
The mission trip to Haiti with Kevin Neal is Sep-
tember 28 – October 8. The plan will be to work
with Jean Marie Admirable in the Petit Goave

stroyed or damaged during the 2010 earthquake.
The cost should be about $1,000 each, and that
includes travel, lodging, building materials, vehi-
cle rental and food. Everything except souvenirs
should be covered. Email Kevin for more infor-
mation: [email protected]
