PASTORAL REFLECTIONS…

“AN AUTUMN WORD: REDOLENT”

An old-fashioned word comes to mind, “Redolence,” when I think

of Autumn. This word means “An agreeable odor or aroma.”

Of course, the colors of the fall are a banquet for the eyes but

the Autumn smells are a bouquet for the nose. I love the woodsy

smells of the leaves piling up on the lawns. I love the musty, loamy

essence from the surrounding trees being shorn of their manes.

I love the earthy traces that make me add layers to my clothing

and prepare me for more hours of darkness than daylight. To be

sure, Autumn is a season of sights for us in the northern Midwest,

but its also a wonderful season of smells.

So, it got me thinking, now that I’m in the Autumn of my life, “How

do I smell to others?” Of course, I want to be an incense of God’s

love and presence, I’d love to be known as a fragrant essence

of the hope and encouragement we have in Jesus, I want to be

redolent with the promises, provisions, protections and presence

of the Holy Spirit.

Knowing myself, I’ve endured the skunky smell of my own sin and

shame. I’ve more than wrinkled my nose at the pungent stink of

my guilty conscience and wounded soul. I’ve lasted through the

stench of admitting to breaking my promises, my word and God’s

commandments. Of course I’ve tried to cover up these rancid and

rotten reeks with the perfume of good intentions, the cologne of

eye-balled good works and the eau-de-toilet of mostly-sincere

kindnesses. But you know as well as I do, putting deodorant on an

unwashed body may mask the malodorous, but it doesn’t cleanse

and purify.

Pastoral Reflections...cont’d

Rev. William Yonker, Senior Pastor Rev. Phillip Baerwolf, Associate Pastor

During the first six months of the pandemic, the offerings of God’s people were so generous, so sacrificial, so helpful in making sure that we could continue to draw more people closer to Christ as we adapted and changed to fit the times in which we find ourselves. The last few months we have witnessed a decline in our weekly giving and so we wanted to remind you of the opportunity each of us has to support the work of the church and school ministry which is so precious to the Lord’s work through Immanuel. If you attend in person worship there are baskets for your church envelopes. You can give online from our church’s website. You can sign up

for Simply Giving which allows you the freedom to set up your offerings weekly or monthly – you can contact the church office for a form. Thank you for your gifts to the Lord and His Church!

Only Jesus truly cleanses us and leaves us smelling fresh and redolent. In Jesus’ dying on the

cross, our sins are TAKEN AWAY - - the garbage has been thrown out of the house! In rising from

the grave Jesus makes our decaying souls into brand new creations and at our Baptisms we are

washed completely clean. AND here’s what’s even more wonderful: we are given Jesus to live

in us to perpetually keep us smelling good. Galatians 2:20 reminds us, “It is no longer I who live,

but it is Christ who lives in me.” Please know this, as Baptized, believing followers of Jesus, we are

not simply attached to the Savior, but He is fully and completely enmeshed and woven into the

very fibers of our being. Recently I’ve been quoting repeatedly a phrase I heard at a Christian

men’s gathering. The phrase says: “When God smells you, the smell of Jesus is in His nostrils!”

Oh, I love that! II Corinthians 2:15 says it a little more elegantly, “For we are the aroma TO GOD

among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”

I do love the autumn aromas. They add zest to my thinking and a zip to my walk. As I go

through the autumn of my life, I want to be conscious of how I’m smelling, hoping to add zest

and zip to others. Jesus will keep me smelling good to our heavenly Father. My showing you

more and more of Jesus will help keep you smelling good too – regardless of what season of life

your living in.

May our gracious and generous Lord Jesus continue to bless and keep you in this season and in

all the days ahead. May we all be REDOLENT with the fragrance of Jesus – Always.

I am yours in Jesus, with much love,

Pastor William P. Yonker

Dear Immanuel Lutheran Church,

Thank you for the red stole, roses, corsage and the Immanuel Lutheran School sweatshirt! It was a special Holy Spirit filled time of my ordination and installation. Thank you for welcoming me so warmly! I am excited to serve our gracious God and His people at Immanuel. God’s peace and blessings to all.

In His Service, Pastor Glombicki

We know that in the best of times life can get overwhelming. We can not image what you are going through in these times. However if you need someone to journey with with while you travel down a rough road we can be that someone. Stephen Ministers are laypeople who have had 50 hours of training in listening to and caring for people who are going through a difficult time in their lives. We can meet with you with usually around an hour a week. We can not solve your problems for you, but we can help you cope with them better. We are good

listeners and we keep everything confidential. We would meet with you one to one and it would be a male Stephen Minister for a male care receiver and a female Stephen Minister for a female care receiver. We partner closely with God in your care. We are the caregivers and God is the caregiver. So if you find yourself traveling down a rough road and would like someone to travel the road with you give us a call. You can contact one of the Stephen Ministry leaders listed below or one of our pastors. Stephen Ministry leaders Ramona Baerwolf Steve Harrison 630-337-4691 630-740-2665

Leitner Leads Way in Collegiate Debut Roslyn Leitner had the best round by a Valpo freshman since 2011 on Monday.

Roslyn Leitner (Dundee, Ill. / Harry Jacobs) didn’t waste any time in making a strong first impression with the Valparaiso University women’s golf team. Playing as an individual, the freshman sits atop the leaderboard after Monday’s opening round of the 36-hole, two-day Flyer Intercollegiate. The event, hosted by Lewis University at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Lemont, Ill., marks the first Valpo sporting event against outside competition in over six months. Leitner carded a 75 (+3) in the first round of the tournament.

Thoughts from Head Coach Jill McCoy

“It was a difficult day for the team. We should have been more competitive with the teams currently leading the tournament. I know our team is capable of lower scores and better course management. On a very positive note, I am extremely proud of freshman Roslyn Leitner. She has had a challenging start to her freshman year, but she was able to relax and pull everything together today. She is off to an awesome start and hopefully can keep it going tomorrow!”

BRIDGET MOONEY: From ECC to Soldier Field Rising culinary star tackles tough challenges—Chef Bridget Mooney has united

people from all over the world through major sporting events such as the Super Bowl, Final Four, Masters Tournament, and the U.S. Open.

“I never imagined I would be working in a stadium,” said Mooney.

“I am so thrilled I ended up where I did.”

Discovering her Passion—Growing up with a single mom and three siblings,

Mooney and her sister took over most of the cooking duties. She soon realized cooking was her passion. Mooney’s uncle, who graduated from Elgin Community

College’s culinary arts program, encouraged her to pursue that passion. “I was very nervous about actually enrolling in a culinary program,” Mooney said.

“When I came to campus, I discovered a comfortable environment, and I knew

I had found a place where I could grow into the chef I wanted to be.”

Exploring Opportunities—Mooney went on to graduate from ECC’s Culinary Arts & Hospitality Program. She attributes the

college with setting her up for success and opening her up to new adventures—including an internship at historic Soldier Field, home to the Chicago Bears, where she now works as an executive sous chef overseeing concessions and premium clubs. Experience working in ECC’s on-campus Spartan Terrace Restaurant and industry field trips with culinary arts professor Patrick

Stewart prepared Mooney to excel in the high-pressure environment of the banquet kitchens at Soldier Field.

Remaining Optimistic—Although the food and beverage industry is currently facing extraordinary challenges, Mooney is

optimistic the industry will bounce back stronger than ever. She believes the current COVID-19 crisis will unite culinary workers even more. “We will come back and be stronger than ever,” she said. “What is very unique about the virus hitting the food industry is the coming together it has stirred. Whether you work for a restaurant, big venue, or bar, we are a big hospitality family

and we do our best to take care of each other.”

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. As we think about family gatherings and all that entails, we pause to think about how that might happen. Our thoughts often go to ‘It’s not the same.’ It’s not the same. It’s different, but we can still find a way to give thanks - together.

Pollsters are telling us families are planning smaller gatherings this year. We’re thinking about ways to stay safe, protect one another, yet be together. It’s tricky, but possible!

Our school, through God’s Grace, has been in session continuously since August. We say that, not to brag, but to give thanks for the blessings of in-person instruction. We are not the same. We are different, but we are still here - learning, living, and loving one another - together.

Classrooms are different. Lunch is different. Chorus is different. Athletics is different. Bells are different. Instruction is different. Yet, it’s still the same. We are blessed to be able to give our students each of these opportunities while sharing the Good News of Jesus with each of them!

And that’s a LOT to be thankful for!

We are having a Prayer Vigil on November 6, from 12 noon until 12 midnight. This will be similar to our vigil this spring. There is a signup online at the church's

website. We are asking for you to sign up for a 20 minute time slot,

where you will pray from your home. You are welcome to sign up

for more than one hour.

We are having two hours, from 3-4 pm and 8-9 pm, where the church will be open and you will be able to come to church and pray there. Prayer request cards are in the pews by your pew assignments. There are also cards by the Prayer Corner in the atrium for you to use. If this is not convenient, please call Nancy Flynn, 815-459-8053, with your requests. Thank you for volunteering to spend time in prayer.

Important - PLEASE register for worship online…by that Thursday afternoon (by 1 pm)

New Service Times & Increased Capacity

Immanuel is always striving to provide worship which draws more people closer to Christ. During these days of COVID we are also offering safe opportunities for the Lord’s people to gather in church and at home. During the next few weeks we will be making a few changes to adapt to the days in which we find ourselves. These changes include:

* Increased capacity at our Sunday morning worship services - beginning Sunday, October 25th we will register 100 people to attend worship with a different pew arrangement - there will be one empty pew between staggered sets of distanced worshippers - still giving us proper social distancing. We will also provide a gathering place in Luther Hall for the saints of God to gather before and after church to

converse and share life together as God’s people. Registration will now be closed at 1:00 PM on Thursday to give us enough time to manage these new seating patterns.

* Our 5:00 PM Saturday service which is mask mandatory will remain at a capacity of 80 retaining our current seating arrangement with two pews between each group of those who worship.

* Worship time change from 8:30 Sunday morning to 8:00 AM beginning Sunday, November 8th

* Holy Communion being offered at EACH of our 5:00 Saturday afternoon… (mask mandatory) AND our 8:00 and 11:30 Sunday morning worship beginning Saturday, November 7th (with the addition of communion these services will last closer to 45 minutes)

Immanuel is pleased to offer in-person church services carefully planned with safety procedures in mind, and in compliance with COVID-19 protocols in Illinois. Safety measures include complimentary masks,

socially-distanced seating, preregistration to ensure compliance with capacity guidelines, between-service surface disinfecting, distanced entrance and exit flow, services lasting approximately

45 minutes, continuous-line communion, pastors gloved and masked for communion, as we take the Holy Supper together in worship, touchless offerings, hymnals removed from pews, and more.

Whether your comfort level currently includes on-site worship, or leans toward extra caution and at-home

viewing of services, Immanuel's pastors fully support and understand your prayerful decision. At Immanuel, we know that choices about public worship and interactions are highly personal, carefully chosen, and should

wisely reflect one’s age and medical considerations. We are encouraged by all those who have returned to worship and we look forward to seeing even more of God’s saints over the next few weeks and months.
