IB mission statement

KAS MISSION STATEMENT

KAS LEARNERS IN

ACTION

2

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural under-standing and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to de-velop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and life-long learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

King Abdulaziz School strives to cultivate international educational experiences that prepare active and lifelong learners. KAS aims at

providing stimulating academic programmes supported by rigor-ous assessment implemented through an inquiry-based, caring

learning environment.

Learners are equipped with the skills they require to reach their

full potential and become responsible global citizens.

KAS prepares students to be open to other perspectives, values and

traditions whilst recognizing their own identity and taking pride in

their cultural heritage.

KAS VISION STATEMENT

“To inspire the individual potential of all students and enable them to be-come principled, proficient, inquiring, and caring lifelong learners.” In pursuit of this vision, the school believes in a balanced developmental approach towards each child which is spiritual, moral, intellectual, social, emotional and physical. It is the school’s firm belief that together we can Make a Difference

THE CURRICULUM

The MYP consists of eight subject groups: language acquisition, language and literature, individu-als and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design. Student study is supported by a minimum of 50 hours of instruction per subject group in each academic year. In years 4 and 5, students have the option to take courses from six of the eight subject groups, which provides greater flexibility.

The MYP: a unique approach, relevant for a global society The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community.

MYP teachers organize the curriculum with appropriate attention to:

• Teaching and learning in context. Students learn best when their learning experiences have context and are connected to their lives and the world that they have experienced. Using global contexts, MYP students explore human identity, global challenges and what it means to be internationally minded.

• • Conceptual understanding. Concepts are big ideas that have relevance within specific disci-plines and across subject areas. MYP students use concepts as a vehicle to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local and global significance and examine knowledge holistically.

• • Approaches to learning (ATL). A unifying thread throughout all MYP subject groups, ap-proaches to learning provide the foundation for independent learning and encourage the application of their knowledge and skills in unfamiliar contexts. Developing and applying these skills help students learn how to learn.

• • Service as action (community service). Action (learning by doing and experiencing) and service have always been shared values of the IB community. Students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. IB learners strive to be caring members of the community who demonstrate a commitment to service—making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. Service as action is an integral part of the programme, especially in the MYP community project.

• • Language and identity – MYP students are required to learn at least two languages. Learn-ing to communicate in a variety of ways is fundamental to their development of intercultural understanding and crucial to their identity affirmation.

Service as Action: Grade 7 Students visit AlMasjid Alnabawi

The students were divided into groups of four to do the service as action which took place in Al Masjed Al-Nabawi in Al Madinah Al Monawarah. The students were given different tasks to do as some of them brought dates, others brought Arabian coffee, and the rest were responsible for the bread and yogurt.

All the students gathered in front of gate number 9, then went to prepare the food for those who came to break their fast in Al Masjed Al-Nabawi. As instructed, students were organized, and everyone did his duties and when it was time for prayers to break their fast two groups started serving Arabian coffee and green or red tea.

After the visitors of Al Masjed Al-Nabawi finished eating students collected the leftovers and cleaned the place for Al-Maghreb prayer.

It was really a great experience to see the students do their best to help the community they live in.

International Culture Day On this occasion of the International Cultural Day, King Abdul Aziz School celebrated this fabulous event which pro-vided students with opportunities to explore and interact with other cultures. This event displayed a mass amount of the diversity from the students and the community. The young learners host-ed the Cultural Day Event by displaying themes relevant to their country choice which featured information, food, folk dance, and pieces of culture and art from that country. The young learners developed an open mind for other cultures. Taking time to research and prepare their booths, the students enjoyed the process as much as the event itself. This event showcased international mindedness which KAS offers to the community and to the world where young learners are groomed to be leaders, and where ideas become a reality.

Page 31: MYP Newsletter - kaism.org … · THE CURRICULUM The MYP consists of eight subject groups: language acquisition, language and literature, individu-als and societies, sciences, mathematics,

The MYP is a concept and skills-based curriculum that promotes student inquiry. The power of this lies in students being able to think critically and creatively in asking questions and, in the Sciences and Math's, designing their own testable generalizations and hypotheses. Units are set within a global context, determining the knowledge and content to be covered, but the emphasis of the teaching and learning is on key concepts. An emphasis upon conceptual understandings is important because it enables students to make sense of content and knowledge. In the age of the knowledge economy, when so much information is available at their fingertips, young people need larger conceptual awareness as a framework for building understanding.
