2. There are weak, middle and smart students in classroom. Teacher how do you
teach the students from different abilities?
The teaching style is the same for everyone but the exercises and assessment
are different. The questions for weak students are easier than the smarter one.
The total number of questions for weak students less than the smart students.
The teaching and learning processes is from easier to harder.
3. Teacher what are the strategies that you have been using in teaching
Mathematics?
Usually I use student – centered. I use Cooperative and collaborative learning
so that students involve actively. I give problem solving and ask them to discuss
in a group and then I teach or explain to them. Other than that, I give them a
problem solving and ask them to explain to me. After that only, I will explain to
them.
4. Teacher how do you regard the students?
I regard them as they have abilities to achieve in academic and I have
responsibility to help them to strive for goals.
5. Teacher how do you set up the classroom physical environment?
14
I mixed the remedial or academically poor students with smart students so that
they can communicate well. Thus, this will enhance communication among
students. The students will share ideas and discuss in group. They are able to
understand better from their friends. I am also have been changing the setting of
the classroom every year so that they enhance communication among their
friends.
6. Teacher how do you handle misbehaviors in classroom?
I will change their sitting place immediately and placed them separately from the
others so that he or she will not disturb others.
7. Is there any rewards or punishment for the misbehaviors of students?
Usually, I give extra questions to those students to stop the disruptive behaviors
in the classroom. So far I have been giving token in the form of stars in
notebooks not in the form of stickers or materials.
8. Student and teacher rapport is an essential element for effective teaching.
Teacher how do you build rapport with our students?
I motivate them and try to find out their problems in learning process. In
addition I will also make sure that they are ready for the learning process.
15
9. Teacher what kind a games or activities you have been giving to engage
students as they learn Mathematics facts?
I usually give them quiz and ask them to present using manila card. I will show
the correct and easiest mathematics formulae. I will use the manila card again to
do revision.
10.Madam how do you adapt the changes of English language to Malay as a
medium of instruction for the subjects of Mathematics and Science?
From the beginning, I use both languages (dwibahasa). Sometimes my students
do not understand the mathematical questions. So I have to explain in Malay
language. They can speak in English but yet they find it is very hard to
understand the mathematical questions.
11.Teacher what would you like to tell to future teachers like us?
At first, I posted to Malay school whereby all were Malay students. So I use
Malay language as medium of instructions. After that, I came to this school.
There are three races here. So I have to use English and also Malay as medium
of instructions. The teaching style and method totally different from what we have
studied in teacher training college. It really take long time to make sure that the
students especially these boys to ready for the lesson.
16
1. Teacher how many years you have been servicing
in teaching career as a mathematics teacher?
10 Years
2. There are weak, middle and smart students in classroom. Teacher how do you
teach the students from different abilities?
As u stated just now, I separate the class into three groups. The exercises and
activities that have been given to students are all different according to their
learning abilities. Usually, the questions for weak students easier than the
smarter one. The exercises and activities for smart students always challenging
and more harder than weak students.
3. Teacher what are the strategies that you have been using in teaching
mathematics?
I use inquiry method so that students can explore, investigate and do
experiments. For example, for the topic length I will ask them to measure
objects such as the length of whiteboard, the length of class and the length of
badminton court using measuring tape. Before that, we must give explanations
on the regarding topic. This will create an opportunity for students in
experiencing how to measure using measuring tape.
4. Teacher how do you regard the students?
17
PN.ZURAINI
I regard that all students have various abilities. Some of them can learn quickly
and some of them take plenty of time to learn. Some of the remedial students
couldn’t get although we teach them 10 times. So I use different teaching
strategies to ensure that they understand what they are learning.
5. Teacher how do you set up the classroom physical environment?
I will place the students according to their abilities. Let’s say, the remedial
students able to learn one skill I will place them in middle group students. If
the middle group students able to learn one skill I will place them into smart
group students. I will create a corner for each subject and for each lesson so
that they can revise the topic. In addition, I also create games stations in the
classroom.
6. Teacher how do you handle misbehaviors in classroom?
We can’t denied that, misbehaviors occurs in classroom. I will give advices and
admonish them to stop the disruptive behaviors .
7. Is there any rewards or punishment for the misbehaviors of students?
I also give deserts or token such as pencils, erasers for the students who shows
positive behaviors in the classroom. Besides that, I also praise them if they able
to answer the questions. In my point of view, punishment is not suitable and not
encouraged for this students. At last, I also will give marks for each group and
awarded them.
8. Student and teacher rapport is an essential element for effective teaching.
18
Teacher how do you build rapport with our students?
I always guide them during teaching. I will explain to them and if they did wrong, I
will guide them. I always be closed with them.

students as they learn Mathematics facts?
Once a while, I give them games. After teaching, I give some games such as
poison box, snake and ladder and mathematical crossword games.
10.Teacher how do you adapt the changes of English language to Malay as a
medium of instruction for the subjects of Mathematics and Science?
At first, we had problems in introducing the mathematical terms among the
students. There was a great increase in students achievements after the
changes English language to Malay. Now the teachers have to teach in both
languages so that the students understand better.
11.Teacher what would you like to tell to future teachers like us?
As a teacher we have the responsibility to mould excellent students in future. We
should know their problems in studies and help them solve easily.

REFLECTION
First of all, I am thankful to the kind heart of SK St Francis Mathematics teachers,
Pn. Salina, Pn. Zuraini and Pn. Mahani who cooperated with me during the school
based experience. In my point of view, the three teachers gave importance to
Mathematics because they considered it as an essential subject. They also said that it’s
not easy for them to make students love Mathematics subject.
From the interview, I got to know that these three teachers have been in
teaching career for a long time as a Mathematics teachers. I also noticed that, they
were excited to teach Mathematics to the students. I also observed Pn.Salina’s teaching
and learning process during the Mathematics lesson with her permission.
Students have different abilities one another . Some students are quick, some
are moderate and some are slow. Some students are confident and some are shy.
Some like to work with their friends while some like to work alone. I found that the three
teachers able to differentiate weak, moderate and smart students in a classroom
because the exercises and activities that have been given to students are all different
according to their learning abilities. This will help them to recognize student’s learning
abilities and use different techniques, methods and strategies in teaching and learning
process. Thus, from this interview I realized that as an effective teacher we should
consider the different abilities of students in a classroom.
From the interview, the three teachers use different strategies in teaching and
learning process. They use student – centered learning, cooperative and collaborative
learning, inquiry method learning and ICT based learning. In my point of view, student –
centered learning enhance communication among students and they can share ideas to
do simulation. In addition, teaching and learning process are based fun learning. Thus,
students will be more satisfy and this will increase retention. Inquiry method learning will
encourage inquiry process through research and experiments. This method is to satisfy
24
curiosity among students. ICT based learning enhance development of a culture of
collaboration among all students.
Students are different in many ways. The three teachers considered their
students as they have abilities to achieve in academic. As an effective teacher, we
should have confident and have responsibility to help them to strive for goals.
Besides that, a safe, clean, comfortable and attractive classroom can stimulate
learning and help build a classroom community. Arranging the physical environment of
the classroom is one way to improve the teaching and learning environment. In my point
of view, the three teachers consider that the physical environment can engage students
learning process because they often change the setting of the classroom. Research on
the classroom environment has shown that the physical arrangement can affect the
behavior of the students.
In addition, I noticed that these teachers use different ways to handle the
misbehaviors of students. Pn.Salina use ‘Time Out’ technique to overcome the
misbehaviors. While, Pn. Zuraini give advices and admonish the students to stop the
disruptive behaviors in the classroom. Pn.Mahani take actions immediately by recording
their names in discipline book. In planning classroom management, teachers should
consider using an assertive communication style and behavior to overcome the
discipline problems. From the positive view, the technique that Pn.Salina and
Pn.Mahani using may help to reduce misbehaviors. From the negative view, the
technique that Pn. Zuraini use may contribute to misbehaviors occur.
Teachers can give deserts or token like pencils, erasers, stars and sweets to
overcome the misbehaviors. Besides that, teacher also can praise the students once a
while so that help them to build a classroom community. Teachers also can give
punishments such as enforce the classroom rules. Teacher can involve the class in
making up the rules. Firstly, teacher should state the rules positively and keep rules
brief and to the point. Enforcement of classroom rules can help teachers to reduce
misbehaviors.
25
Teacher and student play vital roles in shape the classroom into an environment
conducive to learning. Teacher and student rapport or relationships are essential to
ensure a positive classroom atmosphere. Classroom management discipline problems
can be dealt between teacher and student. These teachers motivate their students and
try to find out their problems in learning process. This shows that, they are very closed
to their students.
Mathematics games or activities stimulate student’s learning process. These
teachers have been giving quiz, poison box games, snake and ladder and mathematical
crossword games, using mathematical activity book, draw or create basic shapes to
engage students.
From the interview, I noticed that these teachers still not yet adapt to English
language as a medium of instruction for the subjects of Mathematics and Science. They
use both languages during Mathematics subject. They also stated that, there is
advantages using both languages because English language as a medium of instruction
for the subjects of Mathematics and Science now changing again to Malay language. It
will be easier for the students to understand the mathematical terms in Malay.
Thus, I gain experiences about class management and communication skills
from the experience teachers of SK St. Francis.
