My Pitch

By Jamie-ash Townsend

Page 2: My Pitch

• The genre of music I have chosen for my music magazine is Alterative rock.

• The main reason I have chosen to do Alternative rock is because is appeals to a niche audience, as apposed to a mainstream audience because the unusual and sometimes unknown really interests me.

My ideas

Page 3: My Pitch

Here are some examples of other rock/Alterative magazines…

Page 4: My Pitch

Why a Alterative rock Magazine?

• I have chosen Alterative rock because it is a genre that is mostly unexplored and many people class bands like Oasis and U2 as alternative and this is a common misconception. I will be looking at real alternate/Unknown music alike Jeff Buckley and Tom Waits.

• With institution and magazine research I found out that there is a gap in the market for unknown artists so this seemed like an interesting genre to look at for magazine purposes but I can also learn something while in the prose's.

What institution would look at my magazine?

• The institution that may produce my magazine would be small publishing institutions such as IPC Media who’s parent company are Time Inc. They produce magazines such as uncut and 25 Beautiful Homes. Because they have a wide range I feel they will have money to try a magazine for a completely niche audience.

Target Audience• Music students • Artists • Art house

people.

The age range for my target audience would be from 16-36 because there will be mature music that some younger people will appreciate but the music will be for more of a matured taste. This will mainly a male magazine because of the music style mainly being followed by men but there will be a fashion input as well so it will be mildly androgynous. This will be for any sort of educational background, occupation and annual income. This will be for people with a low to large disposable income as the cost will not be massive. This is or people with a taste in music not a specific lifestyle. The target audience I hope will have an idea of culture at least.

Description of the magazine style

• The magazine will be for obscure and unknown musicians. I will use dull, dank and dishevelled look to connote the style and genre of music within. I will also use a dull colour pallet to appeal to people who like the music genre.

• I feel I should make the magazine 80% unknown and obscure and then 20% of it should be for slightly more mainstream bands, so as to bring in more readers.

• Mode of address: will be informal but also eloquent.• The images I will use will be of people with that style of

clothing that readers can emulate. I will not use any bright coloured images.

What will my magazine cover ? How?

• My magazine will cover unknown, bluesy, jazzy, rocky, individual music. Focusing on unknown artists that I feel deserves to get into the lime light.

• Some articles may also be about festivals, shops, clubs, or open mic nights that follow the same genre of music.

Double page spread

• I would like my double page spread to feature a solo artist who is extremely individual and slightly well known but not know by people of my age (teenage). I would like it to be in a simple convocation layout.

• The ratio of text to image will be 60:40 with an image taking up a predominant part of the page. The image will bleed from the left hand side to the right hand side of the spread.
