Who We Are The Men Who Dare, Inc. (MWD) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to help "At Risk" and/or disadvantaged youth in the Detroit Metropolitan Community by providing them with scholarships and mentorship.
History Group was formed in 1959 by 14 men who saw a need
Raised funds to help Marvin McKinney (first recipient) attend college
Originally raised funds by selling BBQ dinners
501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt status since December 1966
We have donated over $625,000 in scholarship funds
We have awarded over 530 scholarships o Over 80% have graduated o Many are enrolled in graduate school
MWD celebrated 55 years of service in November 2014

What Do We Do
Support the efforts of "at risk" and/or disadvantaged full time college students who are financially challenged with scholarship dollars
Offer ACT/SAT Prep Workshops
Offer students support as they complete their respective course work o Students receive follow up from members o Members provide guidance, counsel, and accountability
Provide students with employment opportunities through the assistance of our longtime supporters
Location
We are located in the Legal Aid and Defenders building at 613 Abbott Street, Detroit, MI 48226
Our office is located on the first floor o We have 400 sq. Ft of office space o Access to computer room (14 units) o Access to a “state of the art” auditorium that seats 150 o Plus conference room facilities
Safe and secure parking…we’re across the street from the DPD Headquarters
Members are Volunteers

Fund Raising The majority of our fund raising is event driven
We hold three (3) fund raising events annually o Mother’s Day Raffle o Scholarship Golf Outing o Black & White Scholarship Ball

Community Service Many of The Men Who Dare scholars (recipients) are giving back by helping others and serving the community. Below are pictures of Alexis Alexander (left) volunteering as a Pals Student Mentor. Pals Student Mentors is a student-run mentoring organization at Grand Valley State University. The goal of the Pals Student Mentors is to positively influence children by providing a solid foundation of meaningful relationships in the community through committed student mentors.
