Books and Series and why you should read them.

One good series to read is the Percy Jackson series. This is a good series for people who like adventure

and fantasy type things. Percy Jackson has a mix of ancient Greek gods and modern day situaons.

Another good series is the Heroes of Olypmus series. This is another series made by Rick Riordan, the

author of the Percy Jackson series. This also involves Greek gods but also with a twist of Roman gods

also. These books are also fast paced adventure stories of modern day.

If youre interested in Vampires but dont want to read slow love stories then you should read The

Chronicles of Vladimir Todd. These books are about a teen who is a vampire and goes through big ad-

    ventures.

If you like gross books then the Demonata series is a good series for you. These books are about a uni-

verse of demons that mess with humans and a nasty Demon master named Lord Loss who toys with

humans and feeds o of their sorrow and pain. Learn more about this series and read it!

The Hurricane of the Century: Hurricane Sandy

The eighteenth named storm and tenth hurricane of

the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Hurricane Sandy was

the hurricane of the century, having done untold carnage to

the East Coast. Jersey Shore's famous boardwalk has been

torn into splinters; the roller coaster washed out to sea.Thousands were left homeless, powerless, and hopeless.

Loved ones were lost. Hurricane Sandy not only affected

the U.S., she affected The Caribbean, Jamaica, Cuba, The

Bahamas, Bermuda, New England, and Canada. Hurricane

Sandy defiantly has left her mark all across the globe.

    How Sandy became Sandy

Hurricane Sandy began as a low pressure system which

developed into a classified tropical depression on October

22 south of Kingston, Jamaica. It moved slowly at first due

to a ridge to the north. Low wind shear and warm watersallowed for strengthening, and the system became Tropical

Storm Sandy late on October 22. Early on October 24, an

eye began developing, and it was moving steadily northward

due to an approaching trough. Later that day, the NHC upgraded Sandy to hurricane status about 65 mi

(105 km) south of Kingston, Jamaica. At about 7pm that day, Sandy made landfall near Kingston with

winds of about 80 mph. Just offshore Cuba, Sandy rapidly intensified to winds of 110 mph, and at that

intensity it made landfall just west of Santiago de Cuba on October 25.

After Sandy exited Cuba, the structure became disorganized and it turned to the north-northwest over the

Bahamas. By October 27, Sandy was no longer fully tropical, and despite strong shear, it maintained due

to influence from an approaching trough; the same trough turned the hurricane to the northeast. After

briefly weakening to a tropical storm, Sandy re-intensified into a hurricane, and on October 28 an eye be-

gan redeveloping. The storm moved around an upper-level low over the eastern United States and also

to the southwest of a ridge over Atlantic Canada, turning it to the northwest. Sandy reached a secondary

peak of 90 mph on October 29, around which time it had a wind diameter of over 1,000 nautical miles.

The convection diminished while the hurricane accelerated toward the New Jersey coast, and the hurri-

cane was no longer tropical by 11pm on October 29. ] An hour later, Sandy made landfall about 5 miles

southwest of Atlantic City, with winds of 90 mph. The remnants weakened over Pennsylvania, degenerat-

ing into a remnant trough on October 31.

    Effects from the Storm

The Great Lakes: As Hurricane Sandy approached and made landfall in the U.S., The National

Weather Service issued a storm warning for Lake Huron on October 29 that called for wave heights of 26feet, and possibly as high as 38 feet. Lake Michigan waves were expected to reach 19 feet, with a poten-

tial of 33 feet on October 30. Flood warnings were issued in Chicago on October 29, where wave heights

were expected to reach 18 to 23 feet along the Cook County shoreline and 25 feet in northwest Indiana.

Gale warnings were issued for Lake Michigan and Green Bay in Wisconsin until the morning of October

31, and waves of 33 feet in Milwaukee and 20 feet in Sheboygan were predicted for October 30. The ac-

tual waves reached about 20 feet but were less damaging than expected.

    Many schools were shut down

for over weeks before, during, and after

    the storm.

    Flights were canceled to and

from the East Coast, leaving people

    stranded in the airports.

Many places were flooded along the

East coast; many having to evacuate

and eleven died from the flooding.

Many of the subways also flooded,

leaving damage and a lot fixing!!

    During the hurricane, the presi-

dential election was on the horizon. The

weather caused both Obama and Rom-

    ney to cancel speeches planned

throughout the states, and campaigning came to a screeching halt. Even with the hurricane going on, theelection continued.

    Now, that the storm has past, major snowstorms have been barreling through the affected states;

leaving snow topped houses and frozen land. One thing after another has happened to these people, and

now more high winds wreak havoc on the states. The winds are reported up to 55 mph. Meteorologist are

predicting another storm/high winds on Wednesday the 14th and continuing throughout the week.

    Damage Done

Hurricane Sandy was extremely devastating. In the United States, Hurricane Sandy affected at

least 24 states, from Florida to Maine and west to Michigan and Wisconsin. At least 193 people were

killed along the path of the storm in seven countries. Sandy cost the world $52.4 billion dollars; making itthe second-costliest Atlantic hurricane in history, only surpassed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Sandy

was the largest Atlantic hurricane on record. Sand was a category two hurricane. Even though she has

left, our country and other nations are still reeling from this monstrous bow. But even as we struggle and

stress, together, we will grow from this event. We will learn, we will rebuild we will become stronger.

    Personal Storys from Jasmines

My friend and Captain of the JETs (Junior Equestrian Team, done on horseback) Jenny Tolbert

survived a hurricane. What started as a simple vacation with fianc Nils Toring turned into a giant swim-

ming pool with high winds. Being stuck in North Carolina for four extra, and then having their flight de-

layed for days more, Jenny said shes never going back to North Carolina.

A friend of our families, John Svendsen from Nisswa Minn., owned a fishing vessel. Having been

fishing off the coast of New Jersey, he made a steady living. His boat was dubbed the HMSBounty. He

had a crew of 16. During the hurricane, the boat started taking on water and eventually sank. 13 out of

the 16 crew members made it off safety. 2 of the crew members were found alive, floating in the ocean. 1,

unfortunately, was found dead. John Svendsen did survive.

    Technology: Helping or Degrading?

    Studies have shown that technology

can degrade our performance. In a 2010 study,

2027 students answered a set of quesons and

83% said that driving while texng was danger-ous. 93% of those students admied to sll do

just that. In a study of 237 college students,

those who heavily mul-task with texng, doing

homework, and watching T.V. were shown to

have worse short-term memory and found it

harder to concentrate under pressure. Also, in

a test with 6 boys, they were given each a game

console and 6 months of monitoring found that

with each month, their grades fell by an aver-

age of 2.6% their normal performance. Is ad-

vanced always-on technology really helping us?

Or is it degrading our lives?

The Sea Shepherds: The Game of Battleship

    The Faroe Islands: Viking Shore

    By: Jasmine Zientara Carvelli

Not only has whaling been going on in the Southern Ocean, it has been

going on everywhere. In this article,The Faroe Islands are our target.

The Faroe Islands are located approximately halfway between Norwayand Iceland. The Faroe Islands are sovereignty of the Kingdom of Den-

mark. During the late 8th to the mid-11th century, Vikings ran the islands,

thus called the Viking Shores.Since being somewhat isolated from the rest

of the world, the Faroese depend on the Pilot whales for food. But as the

population of the Faroese grew, the more whales they kill. In the past five

years, over 6,000 Pilot whales have lost their life. Pilot whales are indeed

endangered; an estimated 350,000 Pilot whales are left today in the

oceans. But if the whaling continues, they very well might be existent in

the next fifty five years. The islands may be small, but they certainly have

    iron wills.

It is from within an environment of controversy, uncertainty, and challenge that

great things can be accomplished"-- Paul Watson

The Faroese don't hunt the big whales such as the Right whale, the Blue, Minke, Baleen, and Humpback. The Faroese target the

much smaller Pilot whale. The Pilot whale ranges in length from twelve to fifteen feet. The Pilot whales are found in the northern

and southern hemispheres in tropical and temperate waters throughout the world. These whales are very intelligent, one time hav-

ing been trained by the U.S. Military to retrieve sunken objects from ships! These whales are really dolphins, but often classified

as whales along with the Orca (Killer Whale). All in all, these whales are magnificent, just like all the dolphins and whales.

"It is not uncommon for 100 whales to be killed at a time in the Faroe Islands"--

    Paul Watson

Every year starting in June and ending in August/September, the Faroese people hunt the Pilot whales. They call this hunt the

Grind, or in Faroese, the "grindadrp". The Grind consists of over one hundred small boats and two land crew. The first land

crew keeps watch on the ocean's surface for any sign of the whales. Once they have spotted a pod of

whales, they radio in the boats. The hundred or so boats then race towards the pod and completely

surround them. Once surrounded, the boats drive the whales up onto the shore or the shallows.

There, the second land crew brutally kill them. They then use the meat to make steaks, patties, or

whale jerky. After they have used all of the meat they could from the whale, they carelessly throw

their remains back into the ocean.

"Many whales are left to rot on the beach or are thrown back to

sea after they are killed,"-- Andrew Christie, the director of the

    American Chapter of Sea Shepherd

This has been going on forsix hundredyears. But not anymore. Captain Paul Watson has led cam-

paigns to oppose the hunt in 1985 and 1986 and again in 2000. He in fact did stop them for a while,

but reinforcements came. He was threatened to be arrested, so he left the islands. But on July 15th

2011, after the Japanese were thought to have stopped their whaling, him and The Sea Shepherds

came upon the islands like rabid squirrels. They immediately stationed the Bridget Bardot and the

Steve Irwin around the islands. Their plan was to ward off and Pilot whales attempting to go near the

islands. A land crew of six were placed on the main island to watch the boat activity; major boat activity meant a Grind was pos-

sibly happening. Since having eleven Grind spots, the Sea Shepherds had to watch all eleven of those spots, making it close to impossi-

ble. But their determination didn't waver. For six long and perilous weeks, the Sea Shepherds worked fourteen plus hours a day to keep

    watch on the ocean surface.

"It all looks quite violent but each animal is dealt with so fast that the pain is brief"--

    Danish Embassy

But being in Faroe waters wasn't always welcomed. In previous campaigns like in 1985, 1986 and 2000, Paul Watson often got into

scuttles with the Faroese. The people didn't like the idea of stopping their annual Grind. To them, the Grind was their life. It was their

job, it was for their food.It was their life. Tensions rose greatly, and the Faroese hatred towards Paul grew tremendously.

Yet, the Sea Shepherds persisted with their campaign; they didn't let a single Grind happen for those six weeks.

There are 30-million plus species on this planet. Theyre

all earthlings. Theyre all equal. Some are more equal

than others, I admit: whales and dolphins are farmore

    valuable than people"--Paul Watson

But, on August 26th 2011, Paul Watson got a call. It was first mate Peter Hammerstead

aboard the Bob Barker back in Friday Harbor. He had bad news. It was officially an-

nounced that the Japanese whaling fleet would once again go back to the Southern

Ocean to hunt whales. Paul Watson originally thought that the Japanese were done with

whaling; he was wrong. Thus, they had to cut the campaign short. They were scheduled

to leave the next morning. But before leaving, they managed to successfully drive a large

pod of over one hundred Pilot whales away from the islands. Paul Watson would leave

the islands early, but not forever.

The day after the Sea Shepherds left, a Grind happened; the largest Grind ever recorded. Over two hundred Pilot whales were taken ina single day. It was said to have been the pod the Sea Shepherds originally drove away.

No whales were killed while Sea Shepherd patrolled the Islands. Sea Shepherd were also successful in convincing

20,000 stores in two grocery chains in Germany to boycott Faeroese fish products.

Animal Planet also did a spin-off show to Whale Wars about the Faroe Islands; Whale Wars: Viking Shores. It was

    aired on April 27, 2012.

    A BAG FULL OF LAUGHS!!!!!!!!

Have you ever done a hilarious prank and never gotten any credit for it? Or do you need a prank to doon a sibling? Well here is the answer to your prank problems

One prank that I did was you take the sticker off an apple or, something else. Then you pretend to pat

them on the back or something. Then they are walking around with a sticker on their back.

You could also take a plastic wrap or bag and tape it head level in their doorway. They when they come

walking out of their door, they will walk straight into it.

I dont know if you have ever heard of this put I will explain it. What you do is you fold over their

blankets on their bed upwards, and tuck it under the mattress. Like a pouch so that when they try to get intobed they will be stopped. This process is called short sheeting.

I hope that you enjoyed a bag full of laughs. Remember dont do any pranks that can harm someone.

Well thats it for this time. Samantha Webster

    Friendships

A good friend is someone who is there to catch you when

you are falling. They are there for you when you are in ame of need. They are going to actually catch you when

you are falling, not just watch you go through the pain of

doing something not worth it. Your friends are someone

who will help you get through the pain of life and if you

have a friend that would catch if you were falling, then you have yourself a true

friend and if you. And best friends are the ones that

would risk their own life for you. That is what friends

are for and what a best friend really, really are. I have

    time, Odin's son, Thor,

prepares to ascend to the throne of Asgard. They are sud-

denly interrupted when Frost Giants attempt to retrieve

the Casket (Tesseract). Against Odin's order, Thor travels

    to Jotunheim to confront Laufey,

    accompanied by his brother Loki,

childhood friend Sif and the Warri-

    ors Three: Volstagg, Fandral and

Hogun. A battle ensues until Odin

    intervenes to save the Asgardians,

    destroying the fragile truce between

the two races. For Thor's arrogance,

Odin strips his son of his godly pow-

er and exiles him to Earth as a mor-

tal, accompanied by his hammerMjolnir, now protected by an en-

chantment that allows only the wor-

thy to wield it.Thor lands in New Mexico, where

    astrophysicist Jane Foster, her assis-

tant Darcy Lewis and mentor Dr.

Erik Selvig, find him. The local populace finds Mjolnir,

which S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson soon comman-

deers before forcibly acquiring Jane's data about the

wormhole that delivered Thor to Earth. Thor, having dis-covered Mjolnir's nearby location, seeks to retrieve it

from the facility that S.H.I.E.L.D. quickly constructed

but he finds himself unable to lift it, and is captured.

With Selvig's help, he is freed and resigns himself to ex-

ile on Earth as he develops a romance with Jane. Loki discovers that he is actually Laufey's son, adopted

by Odin after the war ended. A weary Odin falls into the

deep "Odinsleep" to recover his strength. Loki seizes the

throne in Odin's stead and offers Laufey the chance to

kill Odin and retrieve the Casket. Sif and the Warriors

Three, unhappy with Loki's rule, attempt to return Thor

from exile, convincing Heimdall, gatekeeper of the

Bifrstthe means of traveling between worldsto al-

low them passage to Earth. Aware of their plan, Loki

sends the Destroyer, a seemingly indestructible automa-

ton, to pursue them and kill Thor. The warriors find Thor

but the Destroyer attacks and defeats them, prompting

Thor to offer himself instead. Struck by the Destroyer

and near death, Thor's sacrifice proves him worthy to

wield Mjolnir. The hammer returns to him, restoring his

powers and enabling him to defeat the Destroyer. Kissing

Jane goodbye and vowing to return, he and his fellow

    Asgardians leave to confront Loki.

In Asgard, Loki betrays and kills Laufey, revealing his

true plan to use Laufey's attempt on Odin's life as an ex-

cuse to destroy Jotunheim with the Bifrst Bridge, thus

    proving himself worthy to his

    adoptive father. Thor arrives and

    fights Loki before destroying the

Bifrst Bridge to stop Loki's plan,

    stranding himself in Asgard. Odin

    awakens and prevents the brothers

from falling into the abyss created

in the wake of the bridge's destruc-

tion, but Loki allows himself to fal

when Odin rejects his pleas for

approval. Thor makes amends withOdin, admitting he is not ready to

be king; while on Earth, Jane and

her team search for a way to open a

portal to Asgard.Thor now fights alongside Iron
