1945

-Second world war influenced music across Britain. - The war influenced fast and often frantic music. From this dances such as the boogie-woogie and the jitter bug were born. - Lots of dances were held in church halls and village halls.

1950’s

-Rock and roll was extremely popular in this decade.

- American rock, such as Elvis Presley was a huge influence in bringing this rock and roll theme to the 1950’s.

1950’sFashion

Music in the 1950’s significantly influenced the way people dressed. For example both Cliff Richard and Elvis Presley influenced both male and female fashion. From this the idea of rebellious and stereotypical teenagers were born.

1960’s

- Music of the United Kingdom developed in the 1960s into one of the leading forms of popular music in the modern world. By the early 1960s the British had developed a viable national music industry and began to produce adapted forms of American music in Beat music and British blues which would be re-exported to America by bands such as The Beatles and Rolling Stones-At this stage British youth were becoming more and more known for the rebellious antics, such as being different to their parents. Influenced by bands such as the Beatles.

1960’sFashion

In the 60’s fashion was completely influenced by music. Leading bands such as the Beatles set a new fashion in which many wore extremely bizarre clothing to set them out of the crowd and from their parents.

The diverse change in fashion mirrored the social movement in the time period. For example many people could afford more diverse clothing due to the economic boom in 1966. also known as the ‘swinging sixties’.

1970’s

-The 70’s brought a diversity of different types of music. For instance Britain was developing on its electric folk, glam rock and even heavy metal music. - Britain was also influenced by ‘world music’ such as Jamaican music and Indian music. This opened up many different doors and created a whole variety of sub-genres. - in the middle of this decade Britain was influenced by ‘pub rock’ and ‘American punk rock’. From this a whole new wave of music was born. British punk rock. - British punk rock was influenced by the political changes at the time. From this the music was very ‘anti society’.

1970’sfashion

The 1970’s fashion was influenced by the music at the time. Throughout the 70’s more varieties of music were born. The main one being ‘world music’. Fashion was very much influenced by exotic countries such as Jamaica but at the same time was influenced by political and social change.

1980’s

- The 1980s saw the emergence of pop, dance music and New Wave. As the term disco fell out of fashion in the decade's early years, genres such as post-disco, Italy disco, Euro disco and dance-pop became more popular. Rock music continued to enjoy a wide audience; sub-genres such as New Wave, soft rock, and glam metal emerged and developed a significant following. Adult contemporary, quiet storm, and smooth jazz gained popularity- Throughout the decade, R&B, hip hop and urban music in general were becoming commonplace, particularly in the inner-city areas of large, metropolitan cities; rap was especially successful in the latter part of the decade, with the advent of the golden age of hip hop. These urban genres, rap and hip hop particularly, would continue their rise in popularity through the 1990s and 2000s.

1980’s Fashion

Fashion in the 80’s where influenced from Rap, punk and Michael Jackson. All very key in this decade.

1990’s

Britpop was a new name given to a whole new wave of successful British bands that made a great impact in the United States and Britain.

The most successful of these British bands being Oasis, Radiohead, Pulp, Blur and the spice girls.
