Lamp House Music want to bring that fantastic music into East Lothian, get us back on the gig circuit, and also provide a platform for the huge array of talented bands and local musicians living in East Lothian. We’ve worked alongside the Haddington Community Development Trust to take this concept forward and we’re now very pleased to announce that Bombskare will begin what we hope to be a new chapter in live music in East Lothian.” Scott McCafferty of Bombskare says: “We are really looking forward to playing in Haddington. One of the UK’s most celebrated music events welcomes the addition of the acclaimed National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCoS) to its programme this summer. Winner of the prestigious Ensemble prize at the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards in 2012, NYCoS will travel to London’s Royal Albert Hall

for The BBC Proms on Sunday 3 August. Performing the ever-popular Mozart Requiem, the Choir will join the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and world-renowned conductor Donald Runnicles.

The same forces garnered five-star reviews for their sell-out performances of Mozart Requiem in

Edinburgh and Glasgow in September 2013: “…world-class singing, absolutely top-drawer performing from an ensemble at the top of its young game” (The Herald); “…this performance offered a whole fresh perspective through the exceptional precision, power and homogeneity of Christopher Bell’s National Youth Choir of Scotland. There are few places you’ll hear this level of choral perfection.” (The Scotsman).

Donald Runnicles said: “It became apparent within a few minutes of rehearsing the Mozart Requiem with NYCoS that Christopher Bell and these remarkable young singers have added one further cultural jewel to the crown of elite music ensembles in this country. It is a chorus that will hold its own with the worlds finest and with whom I hope to have many opportunities to make music. What a joy!"

NYCoS Artistic Director, Christopher Bell said: “This concert at the prestigious BBC Proms is truly the high point of a journey that started when the choir was formed 18 years ago. We are looking forward to recreating the intensity of the concerts last September with 130 of Scotland’s young singers showing that they

have what it takes to perform on a world stage. A proud moment.”

The choir will also make a welcomed return to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, 22 and 23 August, for its third consecutive year, a highlight of which will be its performance of Fauré Requiem - another work that has gained NYCoS much critical acclaim in recent years.

Why are we featuring a bike show in MNS? Because there's loads of bands!

Bikefest : Kelso, Scottish Borders : 4-6 July : www.thebmfshow.co.uk/the-shows/bikefest-kelso/evening-entertainment/

The second show in the British Motorcyclists' Federation’s season sees the party heading to the Borders Union Showground at Kelso. This is a great event not just for bikers but also for music fans who can either camp for the full weekend or enjoy just a day visit - in a fantastic setting. The BMF Kelso Bikefest brings bikes, entertainment, music and above all great fun to the Borders region and the surrounding roads lend themselves to be explored. There will be live music on Friday & Saturday evenings plus during the day and an awful lot of bikes! If you're a biker check out all the bike stuff at www.thebmfshow.co.uk/the-shows/bikefest-kelso - but on the music side the attraction of a camping weekend of music is not something you can often experience in the Scottish Borders. Although the attendance at last weekend's 'Riverside Rock' in Jedburgh proves the demand is there for lots more. The festival is delighted to welcome back Slade member Don Powell, Don supports the National Autistic Society (NAS) who come to the shows to raise money and awareness. This year he will, once again, be playing a few numbers with each of the bands that wishes to play with him (unsurprisingly we haven’t had a band yet say no) as well signing autographs from the NAS stand. Advanced tickets are on sale until 23:59 on Wednesday 2 July at http://bmf.skiddletickets.com/events.php Tickets are also available on the gate but you can make savings by buying in advance. The weekend music line-up is: Friday 4 July MAIN STREET BLUES: Main Street Blues, are a high energy blues/rock band that has emerged from the Edinburgh blues circuit in the recent years, bringing together a powerful mix of up-tempo electric blues/rock material, with a range of new and old blues classics. Musical influences in the group are wide and eclectic but classis Rock and melodic music of any genre would list in the bands inspirations. www.facebook.com/Iainjamesandthesound THE GYPSIES: Five piece rock band from Lincoln, UK. The Gypsies are a band who will

take a song, strip it down to the basics and rebuild it in their own way. This results in some great twists on some great songs. The Gypies will also be playing on Saturday afternoon! http://thegypsies.weebly.com/ Saturday 5 July GADJI: Established in 1995, Gadji has built a reputation for entertainment that is second to none. Both groups of songwriters will perform their songs live at the Big Big BIG Sing Day taking place on 27 July on Glasgow Green, on the same day as the Glasgow 2014 marathon – full details of all the activity taking place at the Big Big BIG Sing Day will be announced soon. The winning songs will also be professionally recorded in a studio and filmed for video edits, which will be made available on the Big Big Sing website. Loch Primary’s P.6 class worked with their class teacher Ashlea Rusell to compose their song Jump, Swim, Run. She said of the experience: “The kids had a wonderful time writing Jump, Swim, Run and were so delighted hearing the final version, I’m so proud of them and can’t wait to see them all sing it live at the Big Big BIG Sing Day on Glasgow Green during the Commonwealth Games” The winners in the secondary schools’ category of the competition were Shannon McLean, Evelyn Martin and Lucy Howie of Balfron High School who wrote the catchy, sunny pop track Life’s a Game. All three girls sing on the track with Shannon McLean playing ukulele, Shannon explained the inspiration behind song saying: “We wanted to write a song as our school sports award ceremony was approaching and we wanted to write about the spirit and determination involved in sport but also to relate it with life as a whole. So, when we heard about this competition we thought it gave us perfect opportunity. We never thought for a minute we would get the chance to perform it at Glasgow Green during the Games! We were all speechless when we found out, it's such an amazing opportunity and we're so honoured!” Director of Big Big Sing, Svend Brown said: “We were overwhelmed by some of the talent that came through Big Big Sing’s schools’ songwriting

competition, and choosing the winners wasn’t easy. However we feel the children from Loch Primary really captured the spirit of Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and we loved their lyrics welcoming everyone to the city because that’s what Big Big Sing is all about, having fun and welcoming everyone, no matter what, to take part. “We also felt that Life’s a Game from the girls at Balfron High School was an outstanding effort, getting under the surface of the Games and tapping into the emotions both of those taking part and those making their way to Glasgow this summer

for the Commonwealth Games experience. We are exceptionally proud of both winners and we can’t wait to hear their songs live at the Big Big BIG Sing day at Glasgow Green during the Games” Big Big Sing is the UK’s big big singing project. It aims to get more people singing and to inspire thousands across the country to join in the Commonwealth Games through singing - because singing is fun, but also for its social, health and wellbeing benefits. Big Big Sing is an initiative of Glasgow UNESCO City of Music, and is set to be one of the highlights of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme.

BIG BIG SING – HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The Big Big Sing’s online singing portal – www.bigbigsing.org – provides a wealth of materials and information for those looking to take up singing. The site includes a searchable database of choirs, the Big Big Commonwealth Songbook with lots of learning and teaching resources, a guide on how to set up your own choir, tracks from Big Big Sing’s schools’ songwriting competition and details on all Big Big Sing events.

For the first time the Royal Scottish National Orchestra will be taken over by forty teenagers, for a two-day work experience initiative, where the pupils will plan, promote and present an orchestral concert. The forty young people, between sixteen and eighteen years old, originate from across Scotland, representing twenty local authorities spanning 220 miles. Many of the young recruits have joined the RSNO’s Young Ambassador programme, which has been designed to develop interest in live orchestral music through school-aged advocates across the county. They will join staff and musicians at the Orchestra’s base in Glasgow and will be assigned to each department of the organisation – from

marketing and development to artistic planning, conducting and playing in the Orchestra. A number of the young people will learn practical workshop delivery skills which they’ll then use to lead music workshops with primary aged pupils of Glasgow Gaelic School. The two-day programme will culminate in a performance with the RSNO at the end of the second day, which will be open to family and friends. RSNO Director of Learning and Engagement Jenn Minchin: “This will be the first time we have opened our doors to an influx of youth in this way, giving them the chance to run one of Scotland’s busiest performing arts organisations. It will provide valuable experience to those seeking to pursue employment in the arts, and is intended to be challenging, stimulating and fun. You never know - we may very well have a future RSNO conductor or Chief Executive among our group.” Last month the RSNO launched its programmes for schools, RSNO Engage for Schools, one of the most comprehensive and far-reaching

initiatives of its kind. Headlining the initiative, the RSNO launched a national composition competition, in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland, open to twelve to eighteen year olds across the country. Notes From Scotland invites young composers to write a two-minute work for an instrumental trio, quartet or quintet. The theme for the first year’s Notes From Scotland is inspired by five National Trust locations around the country. RSNO Engage, announced last year, has led to a five-fold increase in the number of people enjoying music with Scotland’s national orchestra

outside of its Season performances. A notable success story is the RSNO’s Young Ambassadors scheme, which invites young people aged sixteen to eighteen to help promote the live orchestral experience in their area. There is now at least one RSNO Young Ambassador for every local authority in Scotland, and the attendance of audience members under twenty-six years old has risen to 15% across Scotland and nearly 20% in Glasgow as a result.

For more information on RSNO Engage, contact the RSNO Engage Team on 0141 225 3574, email: [email protected], or visit www.rsno.org.uk/engage

SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE ............ member profile:

John McLeod "The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members

For over 30 years John McLeod has been at the forefront of contemporary Scottish music and is still one of the UK's busiest and most prolific composers. Born and educated in Aberdeen, he has been resident in Edinburgh since 1970. He first studied clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music, London with Jack Brymer, Reginald Kell and Gervase de Peyer, but later changed direction and became a composition pupil of Sir Lennox Berkeley. Subsequently he came under the influence of Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski whom he knew and admired. Conducting studies were undertaken with Sir Adrian Boult. John has won important awards for his work including the prestigious Guinness Prize for British composers. In 1989 he was elected a Fellow of the RAM and in 2005 and 2010 was nominated for a British Composer Award. Renowned also as a teacher, he was Director of Music at Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh for eleven years before holding Lectureships at the RCS, RAM and Edinburgh Napier University. Latterly he was Head of Composing for Film and

TV at the London College of Music (Thames Valley University) and the Ida Carroll Research Fellow at the Royal Northern College of Music where he specialised in the works of Messiaen, Boulez and Birtwistle. Soloists such as Evelyn Glennie, Colin Currie, Jane Manning, Benjamin Luxon, Raimund Gilvan, Peter Donohoe, Murray McLachlan, Sam Haywood and Mark Tanner have all performed his music and conductors including Sir Charles Groves, Sir Alexande Gibson, Neeme Jarvi, Janos Furst, Takuo Yuasa, Yasuo Shinozaki, Rumon Gamba, Gary Walker and a host of younger conductors have all included McLeod's works in their programmes.

His music has also been featured at international festivals including the London Proms, Edinburgh, Canterbury, Perth, Aberdeen's Sound Festival and St Magnus (Orkney). Most of his works have also been heard on BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, BBC TV and Channel 4. McLeod's compositions cover most musical genres: orchestral (including concertos for piano, percussion, clarinet, guitar and 3 symphonic song-cycles), choral works, church music, songs, instrumental and chamber music as well as scores for film and TV. Described by The Scotsman as a major force in contemporary Scottish music, McLeod is the subject of a new article by Francis Morris in the latest Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. In April 2012 Edinburgh Contemporary Music Trust (ecat) featured McLeod in their final concert of the season which featured a staged performance of his little Chinese opera for solo percussion Thrashing the Sea God, performed by Joby Burgess, and the world premiere of The Song of Leda for cello and piano played by Robin Michael and Peter Evans. These works elicited a 5* review by Conrad Wilson in The Glasgow Herald. www.johnmcleod.uk.com

GLASGOW-based Celtic Music Radio is promising a festival of music as it prepares to switch over to 95FM transmission in July. With 80,000 listeners a month in the Glasgow area and thousands more in 180 countries worldwide via its Internet stream, the charitable status community radio station hopes to boost its audience and further improve services. On air since January 2008 on 1530AM in the Glasgow area, Celtic Music Radio prides itself as a station with a mission to support new musical talent and to be a strong voice for contemporary and traditional Scottish music, arts and culture. “The change to 95FM is a landmark occasion for Celtic Music Radio, one of the biggest decisions

we’ve taken since we launched six years ago,” said Ross Macfadyen, broadcaster and a director of the station. “Our listening figures are rising so the move to FM comes at a vital time for all of us involved. Our programmes will be available to thousands more on 95FM so we hope what we offer will persuade people to tune in daily. By offering a wide-ranging festival of music round the clock, we hope to continue to appeal to our existing, loyal audience, to attract new listeners, and to bring in fresh streams of income from advertisers and sponsors to meet the increased costs we face.” The station, run by around 30 volunteers, has a fund-raising campaign on the go as it has licence fees and increased running costs to pay because of the move to 95FM. Any income it generates, through advertising, listener donations, and special live gigs goes directly to paying these expenses. “We’re making the move to FM to raise our

profile and to give our listeners a better experience when they tune in,” said Ross. “We’ve set ourselves high standards and we’re confident people interested in the work of Celtic Music Radio will be prepared to be generous in their support.” www.celticmusicradio.net https://twitter.com/celticmusic1530 www.facebook.com/celticmusicradio1530

Willie Campbell is a Scottish singer-songwriter based on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Regarded by a broad cross-reach of respected voices as among the finest songwriters in the country, Campbell came to widespread attention co-fronting indie contenders Astrid, and also as a founding member of Gary Lightbody’s Reindeer Section. His current creative guise, The Open Day Rotation, have released two critically acclaimed albums- 2008 debut, Down by the Head, and last years, Toxic Good Toxic Bad, the latter produced by Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle and Sebastian). Campbell’s artistic collaboration with award-winning author Kevin MacNeil further illustrates his creative versatility, dropping full length offering Visible From Space last year to a fantastic response- with focus single, Local Man Ruins Everything, garnering Single of the Week across a range of respected media including, The Guardian, The List and Steve Lamacq’s radio show. Campbell was also the subject of last year’s BBC documentary, 'An Estate Car and a PA' @ http://bbc.in/YlfiuH - which documented his return to his native Lewis and successful writing trips to the fiercely competitive environment of Nashville. Since arriving on the Isle of Lewis Willie has started working with veteran Gaelic folk rock musician Calum Martin. A generation apart, the pair bonded over a love of Gaelic psalm singing, melodic 60s pop and oddly enough Nashville Americana. Willie re-embraced the Gaelic language that he had rejected in his teens and under Calum’s tutelage produced an album of original Gaelic songs. The lyrics are unflinching in their honesty – expressing a deep sense of loss experienced before the turning point that offered Willie the chance to start again. The music in Dalma spans the highs and lows of this journey with a collection of melodies that are as beautiful, varied and inspiring as a Lewis skyline. The result of this creative partnership takes the Gaelic song tradition in exciting and uplifting new directions. “Being involved in the co-writing of this project with Willie has been truly inspirational. It brought me right back to the halcyon days of the mid 70s when I first started writing and recording Gaelic songs in a new and maybe ‘Dalma’ way. I wish Willie and Ceòl’s Craic much success with this new groundbreaking album.” Calum Martin. www.williecampbell.co.uk
