Twelve new acts from around Scotland join Words and Music showcase line up

Perth : 14-15 March : www.wordsandmusic.co.uk

Twelve up and coming acts from around Scotland have been selected to join a line up of top Scottish musicians in a series of free showcase gigs in venues around Perth on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 March. The showcases are part of Words and Music a two-day conference in Perth Concert Hall aimed at providing musicians and music workers practical tips and essential advice about making a career in music. Words and Music organisers Horsecross Arts considered over sixty applications from throughout Scotland before selecting the successful twelve: The Age, The Black Diamond Express, Dante, Lidh, Angus Munro, Pinact, Poor Things, Lisa Rigby, Sienna, Leanne Smith, Urvanovic and The Youth And Young will join Fatherson, Alasdair Roberts, Siobhan Wilson, Model Aeroplanes, Findlay Napier, We Came from Wolves, Randolph’s Leap, The Jellyman’s Daughter, Fiona Hunter, Fake Major and Beerjacket in a unprecedented night of live music across the city taking in The Twa Tams, The Green Room and Greyfriar’s Bar. Tom Irvine from Edinburgh band Urvanovic who will play The Green Room on Saturday 15 March said: “It's excellent to see so many prominent Scottish musicians and industry professionals in one place. The showcases will be a great opportunity for bands like us to play alongside established acts, gain exposure and make valuable contacts. We're looking forward to being surrounded by such a

wealth of talented artists and we're absolutely thrilled to be involved!” Andy Shearer, creative director for contemporary music at Horsecross Arts, the creative organisation behind Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre said: "We were delighted firstly with the number of applications we received from artists to perform at Words and Music and, more importantly with the sheer quality and diversity of talent that we listened to during the selection process. The depth, breadth and excellence of the submissions confirmed to us just how necessary Words and Music is to the development of emerging Scottish artists, both in providing a platform to perform and also in terms of career and business advice and mentoring. One of the most pleasing aspects was the amount of great acts from Perthshire or with connections to the county and it's wonderful to be able to offer so many places to these musicians in what is probably the most important grassroots music event to ever take place in the area." The showcase gigs in The Twa Tams, The Green Room and Greyfriar’s Bar are free and unticketed, open to anybody over eighteen. Organised by Horsecross Arts in partnership with Perth College UHI and the Traditional Music Forum Words and Music is a gathering for musicians and music workers from across Scotland and beyond. Packed with practical tips, networking opportunities, evening gigs and showcases the two-day conference in Perth Concert Hall on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 March aims to inspire, educate and entertain musicians of all genres at all stages of their careers. To register for Words and Music visit www.wordsandmusic.co.uk, call Horsecross Arts Box Office on 01738 621031 or book in person at Perth Concert Hall, Mill Street, Perth PH1 5HZ. On booking, delegates will be sent a link to sign up for the many sessions on offer including panels, case studies, seminars and one to one’s. www.wordsandmusic.co.uk www.facebook.com/wordsandmusicperth

The Pathhead Music Collective are delighted to host the slow but steady revival of the Scottish Stepdance Company who will be joined by Cera Impala and The New Prohibition on Friday 28 February at Pathhead Village Hall. For the uninitiated, Stepdance is an old Scottish percussive dance form which was extremely popular until the Clearances. In Victorian times it was cleaned up and developed into modern Highland Dancing and the advent of village halls & social dancing contributed further to its demise. Amy Geddes, fiddler and step dancer explains further; “yes, it does share some similarities with the ‘Riverdance’ style of Irish hard shoe dancing, but our vibe is very much a gathering in someone’s front room as opposed to a stage filled with lots of people in fancy costumes”. So who are the Scottish Stepdance Co? Well, as well as the PMC’s own Amy Geddes, the line up will include Alison Carlyle dance teacher, performer, writer and legal consultant, John Sikorski dancer who literally has the power to make even the most stubborn of hearts melt, Rory Campbell, singer, piper, music therapist and former Old Blind Dog and Kevin Mackenzie international jazz guitarist. Joining the Scottish Stepdance Co will be Cera Impala, “a wild banjo wielding mama”, and her band the New Prohibition. Cera is originally from Flagstaff, Arizona but now lives in Edinburgh when she’s not busy performing across the USA and Europe. Cera is a ‘well kent’ face in Pathhead as she is also a Bevvy Sister and was last seen at their sell-out gig during the PMC’s Music In The Heid Festival last September. Don’t worry the Prohibition part of the band name is not any reflection on the licensing policy at this concert. Doors and bar open at 7.30pm with music from 8pm. The Heiders look forward to welcoming you; tickets as always available from Wahlberg’s Bakers on the Main Street in Pathhead or buy securely online at: http://pathheadmusiccollective.org.uk/scottish-stepdance-co-and-cera-impala/ https://twitter.com/TwitPMC www.pathheadmusiccollective.org.uk www.facebook.com/pages/Pathhead-Music-Collective/295231117261561

Tiree Music Festival has announced that entries for TMF Unsigned, backed by the voice of new music in Scotland, Jim Gellatly, are now open. The competition sees Scottish unsigned bands and musicians battle it out to play the main stage of the award winning festival, which takes place on 18-20 July. Acts have up until the 10 March to enter TMF Unsigned by emailing a track, video or link to [email protected] Heading for a rapid sell-out following the announcement of Julie Fowlis as the first confirmed act to play (with only 200 tickets left as this edition was published). Remaining tickets to Scotland’s 'Best Small Festival' award winner are available from http://tireemusicfestival.co.uk/ticket-prices/ Says festival Director Daniel Gillespie: “We’re delighted to have Jim Gellatly on board for the second year to compere TMF Unsigned – no one knows unsigned talent like Jim and I’m looking forward to listening to all the entries. The demand for tickets has been phenomenal, festival goers are increasingly combining the festival with a few extra days on Tiree - enjoying the Island walks, water-sports and white sandy beaches. The TMF campsites and campervan site will be open from the Wednesday to Wednesday (16-23 July) to cater for all those making a holiday out of TMF and we will also have a series of Fringe events outside of the main festival days to accompany this. 2013 was phenomenal for TMF with the quickest sell-out ever, winning four major festival awards and Mediterranean style weather – we’ve put an order in for the same again for 2014!” Over 1500 bands entered the TMF 2013 Unsigned competition with Jim and the festival organisers then whittling down the entries to the top 5 before it was put to fans via social media to vote. The lucky winning act Amber Road went on to open the main stage at the festival. In a final twist Jim selected his favourite act of the remaining four who also rocked the TMF main stage. Jim Gellatly said: “I’m delighted to have been asked to return to the TMF Unsigned panel. The competition attracts unrivalled talent and I am sure we will have a difficult task selecting the winner. Tiree is becoming one of Scotland’s best festivals and this competition provides a fantastic platform for new music to get heard.” www.tireemusicfestival.co.uk https://twitter.com/TireeMusicFest www.facebook.com/Tiree-Music-Festival

Getting their 2014 season, and 10th anniversary year properly underway, Kevin Morris's The Fallen Angel's Club presents Anaïs Mitchell, who has just been named a winner at this year’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, at Glasgow's St Andrew’s In The Square on 28 February. Anaïs took the Best Traditional Track title for “Willie of Winsbury” with friend and collaborator, Jefferson Hamer. The song is from her fourth album, “Child Ballads”, which was also nominated in the Best Album category. fRoots magazine also shortlisted her for the Album of the Year award: Anaïs is an American singer-songwriter and musician who clearly deserves the description: "Queen of modern folk music." “Child Ballads” is a collection of traditional songs from the British Isles, named after their collector, Francis James Child. In one interview, the album was described as “ a gorgeous reconfiguration of some of those tales, made all the more compelling by its spare acoustic guitar settings and intimate harmonies.” Her previous releases have included “Hadestown” and “Young Man in America.” You can check out Anaïs performing the award winning song live from The Folk Awards here:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFLllQovXLY Following quickly on from Anaïs is the highly-rated Sons of Bill who are booked to play a show at Stereo on 9 March 9 with The Wynntown Marshals. From Charlottesville, Virginia, three brothers are at the heart of the five-piece Sons of Bill whose third album, Sirens, has gathered glowing reviews with some observers saying they put the rock into country rock. Released earlier this year, the album debuted at No 12 on Billboard among new artistes. Their live shows mix acoustic ballads and sweaty stage dives and they have shared the stage with bands ranging from My Morning Jacket to the Drive-By Truckers and they have also played coveted slots at Bonnaroo, ACL Fest and SXSW. Fans of Uncle Tupelo, Wilco and Richmond Fontaine will love The Sons of Bill. This promises to be a great night as The Wynntown Marshals are no slouches when it comes to getting a gig going, the Edinburgh boys dazzled Fallen Angels Club and Glasgow Americana fans on previous occasions with support slots for Israel Nash Gripka and Chuck Prophet. Kirknewton Stables in the Pentlands will host a performance by The Scottish Traditional Music Players, on the afternoon of Sunday 2 March, for a concert of words and music to celebrate the coming of spring. Two musicians from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, (RSNO), Associate Principal Oboe Katy MacKintosh and First Violin Alan John, are joined by pianist Graeme MacKintosh for a programme drawing on the rich heritage of Scotland’s music and literature. Music includes compositions from Niel Gow, William Marshall, James Scott Skinner, and the songs of Robert Burns. The afternoon will also feature readings from the works of Robert Louis Stevenson, Queen Victoria and Lewis Grassic Gibbon. Daughter and father team Katy and Graeme have been playing music together for the past twenty years. In 2012 they visited Shetland to perform a series of concerts with local traditional musicians. Following the success of the duo’s concerts of Scottish music in 2013 - recitals at St Cuthbert’s Church, Edinburgh and at Kinlochard Village in the Trossachs - they now present a completely new programme, with the addition of violinist Alan. This is a beautiful and thought-provoking concert, with some surprising juxtapositions. A treat for all with a love of Scotland’s music, from musicians highly experienced in this repertoire. Kirknewton Stables is only 10 miles from central Edinburgh, and set in beautiful Pentlands countryside. The concert begins at 3.00pm and tickets cost £15 including a glass of wine and canapés - from www.hubtickets.co.uk or 0131-473-2000.

SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE ............ member profile:

JOHN HEARNE "The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members

John Hearne has lived in Scotland since 1970 after studying at the University College of Wales where he gained a First Class Honours degree and a Masters degree. For a time he taught music in Iceland, and for 17 years was a lecturer at Aberdeen College of Education.

He was the first Chairman of the Scottish Society of Composers, and was the Chairman of the Scottish Music Advisory Committee of the BBC from 1986 to 1990. He is now a freelance composer, singer and conductor, and was Chairman of Gordon Forum for the Arts in Aberdeenshire for three years. Notable commissions include a Trumpet Concerto for Nigel Boddice and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and a big Festival Fanfare for the opening ceremony of Aberdeen International Youth Festival. His wind band overture De Profundis was commissioned for Aberdeen University's 500th anniversary, and he completed a commission for the Hebrides Ensemble, and a cantata for the 150th anniversary of St Margaret's School for Girls, Aberdeen, which was performed by the whole school. His suite for Brass and Percussion, The Four Horsemen, was premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. It was voted the best new work heard on the Fringe that year and the composer received the Festival City Radio Trophy from Radio Forth. This work has since been performed many times by a number of different groups, including the BBC Scottish Brass Ensemble and The Wallace Collection. In 2000, John was commissioned by Dundee Orchestral Society to write an overture to commemorate the launching of RRS Discovery,

Captain Scott's ship is now preserved at Discovery Point, Dundee, and Dundee Symphony Orchestra gave the world premiere of Hearne's overture Into Uncharted Seas in the Caird Hall, exactly 100 years after the ship was launched from Dundee on its maiden voyage to the Antarctic. The Inverurie Choral Society performed another new commission composed and conducted by John. This was The Ben, a cantata for soprano and baritone soloists, children's chorus, SATB chorus, and instruments. The text, in the Doric dialect of Aberdeenshire, was another collaboration with the poet William Imray, celebrating the familiar landmark in North-east Scotland, the mountain Bennachie. The performance took place in the Chapel of Garioch, under the shadow of the mountain itself. In July 2003, John was a guest composer at the Victoria International Arts Festival in Gozo, Malta. His choral song The Seagull, based on a folksong from Skye, was featured by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain in their 2003 tour of Australia and Singapore and at their 25th anniversary concert in Symphony Hall, Birmingham and was a spectacular success. www.impulse-music.co.uk/hearne.htm

The plan is to run weekly sessions presenting new compositions in the Outhouse’s intimate loft setting and the first two sessions will feature Kershaw and Stephen with Mario Caribe (bass) and Tom Bancroft (drums). “Since the demise of Henry’s Jazz Cellar as a regular hub where musicians could try out new ideas and formats in a listening environment, it’s been very hard to find a sympathetic venue,” says Kershaw, who as well as fronting his own projects is a stalwart of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra’s saxophone section. “We’re hoping to create the right setting that will give a platform for the creativity that we know exists on the scene both locally and nationally.”

He was also given the honour of opening for the Violent Femmes on their 25th Anniversary Tour in Ireland.

The Bevvy Sisters : album : 'Plan B' release date - 28 March : www.bevvysisters.co.uk

There’s an uncanny musical empathy and alchemy that’s always been the hallmark of The Bevvy Sisters. On the group’s brand new album ’Plan B’, it shines brightly. Whether they are exploring a deep old American roots/gospel classic like ’Ain’t No Grave’, stamping their identity on Americana gold, tackling new self-penned work (’Junkyard Band’, ’Higher Place’) or songs from the pen of the acclaimed songsmith Sandy Wright (’Little Bird’, ’Six Degrees’), the vitality of this fresh, dynamic ensemble is always a joy to see and hear. The band’s potent spirit has already made waves in their native Scotland and, with the new album, they will also be venturing further afield. Audiences will find The Bevvy Sisters mix equal measures of sweetness and sass, grit and glamour, heartbreak and hilarity. Their radiantly triple-layered vocals and artfully, wide-ranging repertoire of vintage, contemporary and original songs stands out in both style and substance. What they produce is pure vocal magic. The Bevvy Sisters are: Heather Macleod, vocals / Gina Rae, vocals, Rhodes (album only), Whistle / Cera Impala, vocals, banjo, guitar / David Donnelly, vocals, guitar, double bass. Plus special guests (on the album only): Dr Dirk Ronnenburg, fiddle / Mattie Foulds, drums and percussion There will be three launch gigs for the new CD: Fri 28 March - EDINBURGH House Concert - 42 Royal Park Terrace, Edinburgh. COREEN SCOTT Beyond The Sea Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now 'Beyond The Sea is the new album from Scottish singer Coreen Scott. Singing in French, English and Portuguese, the album is a collection of songs from around the world. From the haunting melodies of Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where the Time Goes and Tom Wait's The Briar and the Rose to the thought-provoking lyrics of Weeping and the deceptively jaunty sound of Je ne veux pas travailler, Coreen’s voice soars above the beautiful instrumental melodies and tight-knit harmonies – there is something for everyone on this CD, including lovely interpretations of such classics as the Dylan's To Make You Feel My Love, Piaf’s La vie en rose, and Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac’s Songbird, but also the more rhythmic South African Weeping, the Portuguese Manha de carnival and the lovely French La mer. CEILIDHCATU NordEste /NorthEast Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name. ROWAN ROSS

Button Up single : download Release Date: 1 December

The new single from Irish folk singer Heidi Talbot’s latest album ‘Angels Without Wings’, is a beautiful modern day folk song. Co written and sung with King Creosote, AKA Kenny Anderson, ‘Button Up’ was created after the pair discovered a mutual admiration: “He was asked to pick his fantasy band for The Independent and he picked me and Morten Harket from A-ha on joint lead vocals,” Heidi laughs. She conceived the melody for Button Up with Anderson in mind, and he sent back his own lyrics. The result is a brooding urgent love song. Heidi is touring the UK in November ande December with multi instrumentalist/Producer John McCusker and Irish Guitarist and singer John Doyle.
