SPRING 2013 CALENDAR
BILBAO
ABOUT THE MUSEUM When it opened in 1997, the Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao—a spectacular structure made of titanium, glass, and limestone—was hailed as the most important building of its time. Located in the Basque city of Bilbao in northern Spain, the museum features exhibitions organized by the Guggenheim Foundation and by the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, as well as selections from the permanent collection of the Guggenheim Museums.
he past months have undoubtedly been challenging, not just in purely economic or financial terms; we are living in a time of global change and transformation, and consequently we must adapt to new circumstances and anticipate each new development.
Given this situation, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has reexamined and updated some of its operating procedures and made a serious commit-ment to IT innovation, seeking new ways of communicating and projecting an image that will help it achieve the objectives set in its mission statement and keep the museum on the cutting edge of contemporary reality.
One of the most obvious examples is the integration of social media in the museum’s daily work. Our presence and activity on the Internet’s leading forums has allowed us to connect with a broad cross-section of people, keep them updated, and interact with them on a different level.
Considering the adverse circumstances, the overall result of our efforts over the last year is quite positive, as evidenced in each of the areas an annual report usually addresses: the quality of the art program, the growing number of beneficiaries of our educational activities, the development of the Bilbao Collection with important acquisitions, the rate of self-financing achieved, visitor numbers again around the one million mark, or the figures for the different individual member categories. The projection of the museum’s image, the impact that our activity has had on the local economy, the museum’s remarkable presence in the media as well as professional and public forums, and the awards and certifications received all testify to the pace of our activity and growth. We will continue to work with responsibility, effort, creativity, dedication, and just enough optimism to take on new projects with both pragmatism and a healthy dose of imagination.

Featured Exhibits
Richard SerraThe Matter of Time
The Matter of Time allows the viewer to perceive the evolution of the artist’s sculptural forms, from the relative simplicity of a double ellipse to the complexity of a spiral. The last two pieces of this sculpture are created from sections of toruses and spheres that produce different effects on the movement and perception of the viewer. These are unexpectedly transformed as the visitor walks through and around them, creating an unforgettable, dizzying feeling of space in motion. The entire room is part of the sculptural field. As he has done in other sculptures composed of many pieces, the artist has arranged the works deliberately in order to move the viewer through them and through the space surrounding them. The layout of the works along the gallery creates corridors with different, always unexpected proportions (wide, narrow, long, compressed, high, low). The installation also includes a progression in time. On the one hand, there is the chronological time that it takes to walk through and observe it from beginning to end. On the other, there is the time during which the viewer experiences the fragments of visual and physical memory, which arecombined and re-experienced.

Man From Naples
Jean-Michel Basquiat
ACRYLIC + COLLAGE on WOOD122x244.5cm
Man from Naples and Moses and the Egyptians, both completed in 1982, were created at a particularly important mo-ment in the career of Jean-Michel Basquiat, after his discovery as an artist, and before his period of maximum produc-tivity. Both pieces are essential for understanding the development of his painting during the 1980s.
In Man from Naples, the artist apparently regarded the entire surface of the canvas as a big blackboard where he could scribble and mix signs. The title of the painting comes from a phrase written over the head of a red donkey which, although surrounded by countless inscriptions, splashes of color, cross-outs, and elementary signs, dominates the composition like a totemic image. Humor, irony, and primitivism define this forceful, representative painting.

Moses And The Egyptians
Moses and the Egyptians and Man from Naples, both complet-ed in 1982, were created at a particularly important moment in the career of Jean-Michel Basquiat, after his discovery as an artist, and before his period of maximum productivity. Both pieces are essential for understanding the development of his
painting during the 1980s.
At the center of the composition, one can distinguish the pro-file of Moses suggested with some white lines that appear to be the result of an instantaneous, unpremeditated impulse. This same color not only envelops the gigantic tablets of the law, but extend around the prophet’s profile in the form of expressive drips and drops. The tablets also contain a series of inscriptions in an arrangement that looks more orderly and contained, unlike the one in Man from Naples. This work ob-
