A crowd of over 4000 people watched 150 runners challenge themselves in the 2012 Great Pyramid Race. This year was the 53rd anniversary of the running of the race. The 12 kilometre race was run in warm conditions with the eventual winner Neil Labinsky clocking a time of 1 hour 23 minutes and 32 seconds, almost 2 minutes ahead of David Wood in a time of 1 hour 25 minutes and 19 seconds and then Steven Francis almost 4 minutes after that.

Neil Labinsky has won the Pyramid race on three other occasions in the past including, 2007, 2008 and 2010. First female across the line in a time of 1.45.58 seconds was Kate Johnston a clear winner from second place getter Rosannah Blackwood followed by Shannon Lenehan. 9 competitors competed in the 50-59 year bracket which was eventually won by Steve Cunningham in a time of just over 1 hour 36 minutes.

The 60 years and over race was run and won by Graham Barralet in an incredible time of 1 hour 36 minutes and 37 seconds. An incredible total of 6 runners competed in this division and considering this has been compared to a marathon in intensity it is a great effort.

At the official opening of the 2012 Great Pyramid Race, Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt acknowledged the tireless community service work performed by three members of the Gordonvale community who have consistently given of their time so generously to benefit the local community. Mr Pitt paid tribute to Mr Frank Steene who is involved with many local community groups. "As a Member of Parliament I get to attend many local meetings and it's odds-on that Frank will be there too," Mr Pitt said.

"Frank is a member of the Local Ambulance Committee, spent 37½ years as an auxiliary firefighter, is a member of the Quingilli and Behana Gorge Rural Fire Brigades and is Fire Warden for Quingilli and Behana Gorge. "He has been a JP (qualified) for 43 years and is actively involved in the 'JP in the Community' service at Mount Sheridan Plaza, Stockland, Raintrees and Cairns Central. "Additionally he is on the St Michaels School SafeST committee, part of the Gordonvale Eliminate Dengue team, past member of the Gordonvale Lions Club and set up the Meerawa Community Centre.”

Mr Pitt also honoured husband and wife team Jim and Marie Floyd. "Jim has been with the Gordonvale Tennis Club for about 20 years and has coached over 2,000 kids. He is the tennis and ALF school liaison officer for the local area including Yarrabah," Mr Pitt said. "Pyramid Power Junior AFL Club is a passion for Jim because he not only trains the kids but he also drives the bus to make sure they get to training and matches. "He’s happy to do anything including mowing, whipper-snipping, painting and is always hassling people so the club can get something for nothing.”

Mr Pitt said at Pyramid Power, Jim and Marie Floyd are a formidable team. "There would be no club without Marie - she is everything to the club. Marie does all the administration work, she manages a young team and is the club's tribunal advocate. "Basically she organises everyone - and if someone is sick she can do the job for them. She can even operate the line-marker to mark the field and knows that it takes 10 litres of paint because she orders the supplies," Mr Pitt said. Mr Steene and Mr and Mrs Floyd were presented with commemorative plaques by Mr Pitt.

Mr Pitt said the weekend was not only about the Pyramid Race, but it was also an opportunity for the Gordonvale community to show why it’s still the envy of many others in Far North Queensland. “This great race shines the spotlight on what is truly a magnificent part of Australia,” Mr Pitt said. “The reason there is still such a strong sense of community in Gordonvale is because of the efforts of people like Frank Steene, and Jim and Marie Floyd. "I hope our younger generation will continue the tradition of putting their time into the community to make it a better place."

Gordonvale Lions Club

In 1935 The Mulgrave Central Sugar Mill purchased a steam cane loco. It was built in 1934 by John Fowler, Leeds.

When it arrived at the mill it was called Nelson after the previously gazetted name given to the small sugar town that became Gordonvale.

The Nelson was used to haul cane to the mill. Between 1951 and 1955 the driver was George Hesp.

Apparently the fireman’s job was considered, by the younger fellows, to be the pick of the jobs on the loco. It was hard work as the fireman had to shovel anything up to 6 tons of coal each shift.

The Nelson was decommissioned in 1955 as steam made way for more efficient locos. In June of that year George made his last run out to Aloomba. Many a Gordonvale resident remembered the sound of Nelson’s whistle long after it stopped running.

On its retirement the Nelson was set up in Norman Park as a reminder of part of the history of the sugar industry in North Queensland.

Directors of the Mulgrave Mill decided to diversify their milling interests and came up with the idea of a tourist train ride venture. The Nelson was resurrected from Norman Park and renamed The Rambler.

Specially designed old style carriages were built to allow passengers the scenic view. The trip took them through some spectacular sugar cane country

from the Rambler Station in Gordonvale up through Orchid Valley to the Waterfall Nursery run by David and Susan Collier.

The driver on that first trip out of the Rambler Station was George Hesp who was the locos last driver before it was decommissioned. George also acted as a relief driver.

The full time driver was Richard Salisbury. Also assisting with the train was Michael Kent.

Tony Hunter drove the Rambler bus and Jacqui Ireland, Diane Ross and Janice Sherratt looked after the kiosk at the station.

Ian Elkington gave a talk before the tour began and also guided the tourists through the mill.

According to the brochure the tourist’s venture was a ride on the historic train The Mulgrave Rambler.

Tourists were lured with a Devonshire Tea, a steam train ride, rainforest tour, sugar mill tour, museum admission and an explanation of the sugar industry plus coach transfers with full commentary (where applicable).

The Mulgrave Settlers Museum in Gordonvale is interested to find out anymore information and stories from passengers who travelled on the Mulgrave Rambler and from anyone who experienced the last train trip and how the tourist venture came to an end.

Welcome to this month's industry update.

The fantastic weather has brought with it a lot of buyer activity at Open Homes and also for private inspections. Like most Agencies, at Cairns Property Office we are finding that Property Listings are becoming scarce and many buyers are

becoming quite anxious about finding a suitable home. Many of these buyers have sold in the last 6 months and have rented whilst looking for their new home.

As the end of their lease approaches they are keen to buy, especially since many landlords are putting rents up, some by as much as $30 per week, due to the low vacancy rates in the Cairns Region.

Ingredients

1 packet short crust or puff pastry 3 shallots, sliced

2 bacon rashes, chopped 125g grated cheese

3 eggs 300ml thickened cream

1 tsp Dijon mustard

Method

1. Using a 7cm scone cutter, cut circles of pastry and press into greased patty tins.

2. Fill each shell evenly with shallots, cheese and bacon.

3. Combine cream, eggs and dijon mustard and fill each shell until almost full.

4. Bake at 200 degrees in an electric oven for 15-20 minutes.

Makes approximately 24.

Treatments at Robyn's clinic are for all ages from babies to the elderly. The techniques used are through clothing, very gentle and can be very effective.

Children with a range of movement issue, aching muscles, sporting injuries, headaches, knee or back pain, growing pains, stress, sinus and many more pain and discomfort issues can be addressed.

Some problems that babies may be assisted with include restlessness, colic and breastfeeding issues. If a baby cannot feed properly on one side it may be because of a stiff neck or restriction that gives them pain when turning their head to that side.

Councillor’s Corner

WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND THE REGION

A lot has happened in the last month from my perspective. On the 5th of August the Mulgrave and District Chamber of Commerce hosted a community working bee. It was not as well attended as we had hoped but it was fantastic to see volunteer members of the community get out on a Sunday morning, cleaning tables and park bench seats, as well as Norman Park play ground and Cane Toad World. I managed to get a Council worker in (thanks Jack) who cleaned the stage and around the toilet block, statue and shelter with a large industrial cleaner. Many shop tenants and landlords had out the gurneys and hoses and cleaned the footpaths from Ye Old round to the RSL. A few things came out of it for me. We has the toilets cleaned but will replace the benches in the kids room, get some towel dispensers installed, change the taps and bubblers in the park and got a lick of paint on the park benches/tables. A good morning overall.

On the 11th of August Gordonvale hosted one of the best Pyramid Race and Country Fair's held for a long time. Well done to Lyndell Brownlee and all the committee - your hard word paid dividends and the day was enjoyed by all. The runners were the highlight of the day, courageously taking on the mountain. It was also great to see a lot of young ones tackling the 5 km race.

I thought it was great of Lyndell to highlight to the Mayor that the Festival is not yet funded for next year, so publicly Cr Bob Manning announced CRC funding for another three years. Brilliant outcome and I didn't even have to promise to race to get the funds!

Saturday the 18th we held the first meeting of the newly formed or reformed Gordonvale Focus Group. We had about 12 people attend who were active and concerned members of the community or were representing another community body within the area. As we laid down at the Community Forum in July, the Focus Group has decided on Norman Park as its first mission. Attending was the CRC new Branch Manager of Parks and Leisure, Brett Spencer.

We had some great ideas put forward, such as some nee park tables and benches, a footpath all around, increased equipment for the playground and a tourist like street sign with directions to all interesting points in Gordonvale.The Water Tower sparked the most discussion mainly due to its historical significance to the region. Brett's crew are going to knock up a quick survey for people to be able to fill out concerning the water tower and its future.

The next meeting will be held on Saturday the 6th of October at the Hub. Come along with a positive mind set. All citizens welcome.

When Deb began delivering brochures, she had a big problem returning friendly waves because she would automatically raise her right hand which meant that she released the accelerator handle, causing the scooter to come to a sudden, (and sometimes embarrassing) stop. She also kept trying to put a seat belt on and it took her a while to synchronize everything.

Deb loves the greetings from householders and her “pet mates” and laughingly tells of the morning that she was saying “G’day, Babies,” to her canine friends when the owner stood up from behind the bushes where he was gardening and said, “Were you talking to me then?”

During a thunderstorm, Deb rescued a terrified little dog and put it inside the front of her raincoat. With its head poking out under her chin, Deb says she felt like a kangaroo with a joey in her pouch. Sometimes she recognizes the lost animal and is able to return it to its owner.

Deb delivers The Cairns Sun, Mulgrave News and over two thousand brochures on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and has gone through three scooters and uses over two and a half tanks of fuel each week.

The rapid development in this region requires up to 12 hours preparation time folding and packing, whilst loading the scooter can be repeated up to five times in the one day. And that doesn’t count delivery time!

Bad weather means slippery gutters, wet footpaths and grass which Deb will not drive through if it is over a foot high because hidden rocks, rubbish and holes could cause serious injury. Fortunately, the only snake she has encountered was a dead one!

Because her scooter is sometimes below the level of trucks and cars, Deb gives those drivers a wave to remind them that she is there. So, when you spot our Brochure Lady, give her a cheery wave and make her day.

Today’s society has become more complex and thousands of documents require formal signing each day to comply with government legislation.

Justices’ of the Peace are trained highly respected citizens who are appointed by the Qld Government to take on special responsibilities, such as witnessing signatures of wills and powers of attorney, processing affidavits and statutory declarations, and certifying copies of documents etc – all on a voluntary basis.

To provide this voluntary service to the community south of Cairns city, the QJA Cairns South Branch announces the operation of JP signing centres at Gordonvale and Edmonton.

Gordonvale centre operates on the second last Friday each month at Gordonvale Community Centre (the Hub), from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Edmonton centre operates on the last Friday each month at Hambledon House Community Centre from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.
