Described by her school as softly spoken and amazing, Portia is a real competitor on the BMX track. In July this year Portia competed in the BMX world titles in Rotterdam where she crowned second place in the 7 year old division. Portia started her beloved sport BMX at the tender age of 2 and from there has been unstoppable, her love for the sport quickly developed into a serious obsession with riding. Because of this obsession, Portias’ whole family came on board to support her dream of going to a World title to see how she would go against other young BMX champions. In 2013 Portia raced her first World titles in New Zealand after taking out the Australian championships. Portia came home from New Zealand as World ranked number 3, so it was inevitable that she was going to go a long way in the sport, which gave her the drive to try again in 2014 and better her world number 3 achievement. After finding out that the 2014 World titles would be held in Rotterdam, Portias’ supporters started fundraising, as the cost to get her to Rotterdam was mind blowing, but with local support from a few wonderful businesses, Hindquarter quality meats, Supercuts, Cairns Hardware, Babinda Bakery, and the general public it helped make a dream become reality. Taking another step up the podium this year was amazing, especially as she raced against girls from what's known as the bicycle capital of the world. Her achievement in Rotterdam also means Portia has automatically qualified for 2015 BMX World titles, which will be held in Belgium. So it is back to fund raising to get the early bird flights to secure Gordonvales’ Future World Champion? her place in next years’ event. The Eden family would like to thank BP service station for their wonderful homecoming notice board message that bought a massive smile to Portias’ face. She couldn't have done it without the support of the community. Portia is already back in training for state titles and then Australian titles before taking on the worlds’ best again in 2015 where she hopes to bring home another world plate. We don’t want to put pressure on such a young talent, so whatever the future for Portia in BMX we are very proud of your achievements to date and are proud to call you a Gordonvale product. Gordonvales’ annual Pyramid Race continues to grow every year with over 15,000 people attending this years’ event. 2014 was the 56th year of the event and saw more than 150 competitors scramble to the top of the mountain and back.Jimmy Hilton of Mossman was the first male across the line in a time of I hour 18 minutes and 50 seconds, followed by race record holder Neil Labinsky in 1 hour 22 mins and 8 seconds with third place going to Steven Francis almost 10 minutes further back. Susan Crowe was the first female across the line in 11th spot with a time of 1 hour 41 minutes and 17 seconds followed by female race record holder Anita Appleby and Selina Stoute in third position.Racing conditions turned out to be great after a couple of days’ rain before the race and then more rain a couple of days after. The cooler temperatures made for a very fast race with the winner missing the record by just under 3 minutes. This year there was also a charity fundraising event which was a five kilometre road race to raise money for any local charities. Every cent of the funds raised for this event was donated to the local charities, and a total in excess of $10,000 was raised for the local charities in Gordonvale.Early morning markets kicked off the day with a record number of stall holders setting up their products in the Norman Park. The event and the supporting markets, entertainment and music, cultural and craft events, children’s activities and rides and amusements have become the foremost community event for Gordonvale and surrounding areas, growing every year since its inception in 1959.Festival activities included the main event, The Great Pyramid Race, as well as other sporting activities including the 5km Cross Country Race and a 1500m Road Race around Norman Park (for competitors from 10 years of age) .There was also a diverse selection of performers, musicians, workshops and roving entertainers to keep the crowds enthralled all culminating in a fireworks spectacular. This year saw great representation from local businesses, organisations, school groups and individuals – all committed to showcasing the unique community of Gordonvale.

Australia Day Achievement Medallions are a way to acknowledge the outstanding contributions and performance of people in the community.

Whether for outstanding performance of core duties or for work on special projects, Australia Day Medallions are reserved for the highest level of recognition. It is a particularly special way of recognising community members contribution to Australia.

Many projects, large and small, impact our nation every day. Some of these projects and the people who undertake them are prominent and receive public recognition. Yet there are many others who make a national contribution at a less visible level.

In 2014 two Gordonvale residents were presented with medallions, Dave Chalk and Beryl Wilson have worked tirelessly for the Gordonvale RSL over a number of years and they received the special awards.

Pyramid Polo Cross

Gordonvale Community Hub located @ 17-19 Cannon Street

As the season has wrapped up for 2014 for the Polo Cross circuit in North Queensland, a new season is just beginning for the Pyramid Club. In mid-August construction commenced on a brand new establishment for the Pyramid Polo Cross grounds on Redbank Road.

The grounds will include Club House, with brand new undercover bar, kitchen, toilets and shower facilities. Along with the new Club House facilities will be 3 full size polocross fields and tie-ups for the horses.

Doug Cook, President of the Pyramid Polocross Club is excited to see what will come of the new facilities. “It’s has been a good 32 years at the previous grounds, which was built up by committee members, players, and sponsors”. Construction of the new Club House and associated facilities was won by Gary Riches Pty Ltd, and Mr Cook says that “it’s great to have a company like Gary Riches Pty Ltd successfully win the job, over the years they have sponsored the Pyramid Polo Cross Club and several other organisations in the Gordonvale Community”.

Gilvear Planning and a number of local businesses are involved in the project, which has taken over two years to get to this point. Construction is expected to be finished by end of the year with the club looking forward to kicking off the season in 2015 at the new facilities. If anyone is interested in learning more about Polo Cross and would like to join in on the fun, contact Club President Doug Cook on 0438 565 386.

I have astrong plan for

a brighter futurein Mulgrave

I welcome the LNP State Government priority in funding education with capital works for schools in Mulgrave over the last two years, totalling over five and a half million dollars. ($5,581,393.) Additional funding of extra prep teacher aide hours for our children, as well as early intervention in literacy and numeracy.

The Gordonvale State School P&C Association received in July $8,449 from the latest round of the LNP Government’s Community Road Safety Grants to promote the Active Travel and Road Safety program. Funds to address the backlog in school maintenance for Gordonvale SHS and Gordonvale State School is so far up to $650,103.

The Life of Early Pioneer Louis ChristensenAn account by his son Jim Christensen (Part 2) (Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum)

A new fowl house was eventually built complete with laying boxes and perches. The habits of the fowls had to be altered. For several nights we climbed the mango tree just on dark to catch them and put them in their new quarters.

The door was then bolted after the last chook was in and we didn’t have any more trouble with snakes. We had great delivery service those days. Our groceries came from Armstrong Ledly and Stillman’s store in Lake Street Cairns. On Tuesdays, the order man came round in his single seater car and took the orders. Then on Thursdays a large truck, which always looked overloaded, came around to deliver. He would dump the groceries on the kitchen table then take out a heap of invoices and commence to check the delivery. Then it was over to the stables to drop off some fodder, barbed wire or bags of corn.

Early in the piece, Chinamen with poles over their shoulders balancing two large baskets, would come round with fruit and vegetables. At Christmas time they always left boxes of ginger and packets of bombs and crackers. The butcher and the baker came round in their utility trucks, although I seem to recall that earlier on they came using horses and carts. Sometimes they would throw a handful of toffee wrapped in paper at us kids. Feed for the horses was normally made from fresh green cane tops during the crushing season. The tops were collected from a paddock which was being harvested, loaded onto a dray and pulled home. In the stables the tops were passed through a chaff cutter. During the slack season, (January to April) panicum grass was used

instead of cane tops for the ‘chop chop’ as it was called. It still had to be put through the chaff cutter. The ‘chop chop’ was then put into kerosene tins and each horse was given one tin each at feed time. If the horses were working, they were also given a fruit tin full of cracked corn and molasses.

In the late 1920’s, Dad bought a Fordson tractor and the draught horses were hardly needed except to pull the dray. We owed a lot to those faithful, hardworking draught horses over the years. When one of them had to be destroyed for some reason or other, Dad couldn’t bring himself to do it and got one of the farm hands to do it.

One day Dad was riding on top of a load of firewood in the dray, coming down the slope of a hill behind the house, when dray ran over a rock and he was tossed into the path of one of the wheels. Fortunately, he was able to roll clear in time as there was no way those horses would be able to stop with that weight behind them.

Dad told me that he never worked as hard as grandad had, but he must have come close to it. He had to manage and handle about eight draft horses which were used for pulling scarifiers, harrows, planters, manuring machines and four at a time to pull the disc plough and at least two at a time to pull trucks of cane. Most of the year he was up before dawn and finished about dark with an hour for lunch. He never read a book; his work was everything.

Registered as the Far North Queensland Amateur Turf Club Inc., our event has become widely, and affectionately, known as "THE CAIRNS AMATEURS”.

camp is that the ACCC has approved that there will not be a conflict of interest to purchase of the Cairns Reef Casino which is now due be finalised by the end of the year at which time Aquis owners will completely refurbish the property and start training staff for the new Yorkeys Knob Casino Project, if it is approved.

At time of print the Tender for Sanlay Boarding Kennels and Cattery was not completed so please feel free to call me if you missed out on the deadline of the 29.8.14, to see if it is still available. There are finally some major changes to the Real Estate Act via the Office of Fair Trading, to be implemented sometime by the end of the year. Some of these changes will certainly simplify purchasing and selling real estate. 1. The Appointment

Form will be a single appointment form combining the 21a & 22a and there will no longer be a reappointment Form 23 as this is included in the one appointment form. 2. Sole/Exclusive agreements will be 90 days rather than 60 days with notice of cancellation by the client to be at least 60 days. 3. No Cooling Off Period or Form 30c. However there will be a separate statement that is inserted in the new contract where the buyer signs. 4. Auctions - the OFT wants to remove all bait advertising - No Price Guides at Auctions. This month is Auction month and I have a glorious acreage property going under the hammer on 14th September at 1pmon site at 24 Jamieson Close, Gordonvale. SEPTEMBER SUDOKU SOLUTION

By Cr. Steve BRAINThe 2014-2015 Cairns Regional Council Budget is a product of a strong focus on improving the organisation's financial sustainability while delivering critical new infrastructure and meeting the community's expectations in managing and improving existing assets.

CRC finished last FY with a $6.5 million surplus in the operating position - a significant turnaround from a $6.6 million deficit two years ago. This was archived with some 'deep dive' analysis of how we do business. Like all work places it could be better but I am happy we are on the right path.

CRC are now looking to reinvest that $7m into the region and operate this coming financial year as a balanced budget, with total operating expenditure and total operating revenue of $276.8m.

Rates in the dollar have risen by 1.6%. This is less than CPI. This means Council has used some of the surplus to keep rate increases below inflation rates. This is the lowest increase in 6 years. This keeps our rates at the fourth lowest in the State! (Ahead of Gold and Sunshine Coasts , Townsv i l le , Rockhampton and Bundaburg (Ref: Richard Bruinsma: Sunshine Coast Daily News).

A few things Council has achieved in this area in the last 12 months...

We completed the Skate Park and BMX tackat Kenrick Street Park, we have added Closedcircuit TV cameras and lights to the same area, we have rendered the water tower safe at Norman Park by reducing the tower to complete a memorial to its structure, we have purchased land at Peterson Park for sporting expansion, built a columbarium wall at the Gordonvale cemetery and completeda refurbishment upgrade of the toilets atNorman Park.

In the coming year we will add two new BBQs and picnic tables under one large roof near the Water Tower memorial, will make more room in the park by removing the mound, we will add and upgrade security lighting in Norman Park to make the area safer and more pleasant to be in. $1million has been allocated to upgrade the Gordonvale Library (complete refurb inside and new roof outside - on top of the new free WiFi in the library).

Finally, Council is conducting final engineering designs this financial year for the expansion of Alley Park and allocated $6million next financial year for two new rectangular fields. In all, the town is brimming with enthusiasm, most shops are full and the town continues to be a wonderful place to live, socialise and raise a family. Take care and enjoy the cooler months while they last.

The time has come for our local Laundromat to have a makeover, and what a makeover it is.

Now boasting 4 brand new washing machines. The 9kg & 14kg are perfect for all family's great and small. While our super sized 18kg washer is perfect for businesses and is able to take all your larger items like doona's, linen & blankets.

There are also 4 new massive dryers, to dry your items in record time. Fabric soap and softener are now available from the vending machine in store, as well as a change machine to convert your notes into coin. This really is an amazing upgrade for the Gordonvale community. Laundry services are available for washing, folding & ironing from $25.00. Please contact Renee on 0437 503 464 for more information.
