Cairns Regional Council reclaimed the title to the top drop in Far North Queensland when attendees at the Queensland Water Directorate’s regional conference selected water from its Mountain View Water Treatment Plant as the best tasting from nine samples across the region at the 2015 Ixom Best of the Best Queensland Water Taste Test on Friday, 8 May 2015.

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning said the win came as no surprise. “We are lucky to have some of the best water in Queensland,” Cr Manning said. “And the residents of Mountain View are getting the best of the best.

“This might be one of our smallest catchments, but the quality speaks for itself. With water sourced from a tropical mountain creek, you could not ask for a more pristine water supply.”

Mountain View treatment plan sources water from the Little Mulgrave River and supplies 30 connections in a rural locality to the south-west of Cairns. Water passes through a 50-micron pre-filter screen then through an additional two sets of bag filters, which screen down to 1-micron (or one thousandth of a millimetre), before passing through

a UV disinfection system, and into the water storage reservoirs. Once in the storage reservoirs the water disinfection is automatically sampled, monitored and maintained with residual chlorination up to the delivery through the network to consumers.

Queensland Water Directorate (qldwater) CEO, Dave Cameron, said the event marked the end of the tenth annual Water Connections Tour where representatives from the water industry and state government this year visited remote communities in Far North Queensland to learn more about the issues faced in providing water and sewerage services.

“The water industry continues to experience numerous challenges from extreme weather events, removal of subsidies for building new infrastructure, downward pressure on prices, red tape reduction and an ageing asset base, all of which impact the way water service providers – including councils – manage water and sewerage within their communities,” Mr Cameron said.

“Most customers are happy when the tap works and the toilet flushes and probably only think about who provide these services when they are paying their bills or when something goes wrong. The aim of the taste test is to raise awareness of the hard work that happens behind the scenes to ensure we all have safe, clean drinking water when we turn on the tap.”

“Our conferences this year focus on customers, innovation to reduce costs and industry skills and capacity. Industry collaboration in Queensland is exceptional and the events we have held in Cairns have been some of the best anywhere.”

With 75 drinking water service providers around the state - mostly owned and run by local government organisations - and over 300 schemes (or community water supplies), the quest to find the top drop of tap water in Queensland is divided into six regional semi-finals before the final six go head to head at a State Finals event in November 2015. With the taste test now crossing borders into NSW,

the overall winner of the 2014 Best of the Best Queensland Water Taste Test, Richmond Shire Council, will take on NSW winner Orange City Council at the Water of Origin taste test event to be held at the Water Industry Operators Association of Australia (WIOA) Queensland Conference in Toowoomba on 17 & 18 June 2015.

Livingstone Shire Council won the first regional title for 2015 in Central Queensland at a Rockhampton event in April.

Other regional taste test events for 2015 are scheduled for Barcaldine on 15 June, Ingham on 23 June, St George on 31 July and the Gold Coast on 20 August, culminating in the grand final event on the Sunshine Coast on 5 November.

Kindly hosted by Cairns Regional Council, the Cairns event provided an opportunity for Far North Queensland Water Service Providers to share water management information.

80 children at Gordonvale’s St Michael’s Catholic Primary School learnt important personal safety skills that will educate, empower and protect them against child sexual assault through Bravehearts acclaimed education program ‘Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show’.

The child protection advocate’s Cairns-based education team visited the school on Thursday, 7 May to teach children aged up to eight years about how to stay safe in a range of situations from bullying to sexual assault.

The 40-minute live production underpins children’s instinctive understandings and feelings around personal safety in a non-confrontational and safe way, teaching them about warning signs, privacy, that it’s OK to say no if they don’t feel safe and what to do if they feel unsafe or unsure.

The national program has reached 440,000 children across Australia since 2008. The Cairns team alone visited almost 25,000 children last year and is expected to surpass this figure in 2015 as an increasing number of schools and daycare centres become empowered around the prevention of child sexual assault.

The Cairns Regional Council has completed its update of Johnson Park in Gordonvale and have now spent the last few weeks adding some signage and refreshing the clubhouse.

The clubhouse used by a number of sporting clubs has a new roof, security, panes and paint. These upgrade have added a new look to the park that is well used by the community. The park is home to

Johnson Park Update Completemany sporting event in the local area including Netball, Soccer, Little Athletics and Cricket. The work of the Cairns Regional Council also included the relocation of 2 picnic tables from under the shelter to more family friendly areas under the trees.

New playground equipment including 2 spinners, and oodel swing and a play booster were placed under the recently repaired shade sail.

Growing in popularity, Walk Safely to School Day has again attracted large numbers this year with nearly 200 walkers from the Gordonvale State School community joining in.

Sandra Charlton, Healthy Citizen Co-ordinator commented, “This school event has gone from strength to strength with participation numbers significantly growing since it was started 7 years ago. It is a great social community event but it also importantly highlights healthy lifestyle options and road safety.”

School staff enjoyed the interaction with parents and children as well as the school’s Healthy Citizen mascot along the walking route. This year two Federal Police Officers joined the walk and assisted at the road crossings.

The Gordonvale State High School 50th Anniversary organising committee is feverishly working to finalise details for our big weekend in September.

As part of the celebrations, a courtyard will be revealed and you can be part of it! Commemorative Bricks are now available for order for $60.00.

The multi-purpose hall at Gordonvale State School was buzzing with 15 organisations being represented at the Healthy Citizen Expo. The vision for Gordonvale State School is centred on creating active and informed citizens for the 21st Century.

The school’s vision identifies five key areas for building the citizenship skills of their students. These five areas are encompassed in the five citizens’ roles: Healthy Citizen; Creative Citizen; Eco Citizen; Informed Citizen and Democratic Citizen. The Healthy Citizen Expo aims to contribute to developing students into a Healthy Citizen i.e a balanced individual with a positive self image who immerses themselves in positive relationships and environments allowing successful participation and contribution to all aspects of personal and community endeavours. Girl Guides, golf, AFL, NRL, Gordonvale police, Trolley Studio, Benevolent Society, touch, cricket, hockey, soccer, tennis, landcare, vigoro and netball were all represented.

The Healthy Citizen Expo included interactive as well as stationary displays with a range of sport and leisure activities holding the attention of the students. Gordonvale State School’s Healthy Citizen Co-ordinator, Sandra Charlton, was inspired to once again co-ordinate this event following the events outstanding success in the previous two years resulting in a significant number of students joining clubs or organizations.

Gordonvale’s Paraclass athlete Joshua Lush has had an 8 month blitz at State, National and International level.

Joshua’s first achievement was taking 5 gold medals at the Special Olympics National games in Melbourne, followed by 2 gold and 3 silver medals at the Australian Junior Nationals in March and then being selected as the youngest team member for the Regional Australian team for Oceania’s Games held in Cairns in May competing against 22 countries.

Joshua, now an adult athlete has won 3 gold medals in this division. He was in the FT20 category. In the Junior Competition (Under 16) he won the 100 metres, 200 metres, Long Jump, High Jump, Discus and Shotput. As a result he is now ranked the Number 1 Junior athlete in Oceania. Josh broke the Australian and Queensland records in High Jump and the Queensland record in Discus. He also competed in the Senior Competition and won the High Jump, Discus and Shotput events, was 4th in the 100 metres, 5th in the 200 metres, 5th in the Long

Jump. He is ranked the number 5 Senior Athlete in Oceania. It was at these competitions where Joshua broke 9 Qld and 2 Australian records now holding a total of 20 Qld records, 3 Australian and 9 Australian school records.

All these achievements couldn’t be done without the support of Mulgrave athletics, Brendon Pearce painting contractors, Troy Casey, the Mulgrave mill and all the Gordonvale residents and business that continue to support him by making donation and constantly buying raffle tickets. This year Joshua also won the Australia Day junior sportsperson of the year award. He is looking forward to more International events in the near future.

Joshua puts many hours of serious training and his success is well deserved and what is even more amazing about these efforts is that he has done all of this without a coach. The Lush family pass on their thanks for this continued support. Joshua’s records to date total 9 Queensland records over the last 12 months and two Australian records.

The Gordonvale Turf Club opened in 1916. There was no grandstand. Housed in the only official building on the racecourse land, was the Judges Box, Jockeys’ room, weighing-in and committee rooms.

There were no starting gates, just a Barrier stand or Tapes. In the middle of the course were high Ti-Trees that were hundreds of years old, which the jockeys had to dodge. Many Cairns horses used to come out to the Meetings and it was quite common to see owners giving their horses a bottle of whiskey before the race.

The railways always ran a race special train with passenger and horse carriages. There were also a racecourses at Queerah, (then called Warwon) just south of White Rock and another at Behana Creek. The best Tote result was for a horse called ‘Hero’, who paid five pounds, which was a lot of money in those days.

Jack Trevor had two good horses called ‘Ranaway’ and ‘Propstick’ which won the Gordonvale Cup. In the 1940’s Bert Healy’s father trained 8 racehorses and had another 40 horses for rent to the elite American paratroopers.

He sold one racehorse called ‘Slow Tim’ to one of the paratroopers, who was a novice rider. The horse took off at a flat gallop from Bells Lane all the way on the bitumen to their camp on Riverstone Road. No one knows how he did it, but he managed to stay in the saddle!

In 1943 Bert started riding work; he was 55kg and 1.73m tall. ‘Annabelle’ a grass fed horse, spooked and threw him, tearing bits of skin off everywhere and galloped past the post riderless. Another horse Bert rode was called ‘War

It’s been an eventful year at The Parkview with new Managers Brad and Jodie leaving Mackay to get the Tavern back to the family friendly pub it used to be.

Brad is now a part owner of the Tavern and has been involved in the business since the renovations took place in 2006, along with his Mum Patricia Havill and Partners Barry and Bryan Sheedy.

The Tavern has come a long way but unfortunately due to unforseen circumstances it had lost its family friendly touch over a few years. Now with Brad and Jodie back full time they have spent the year turning the business around to give the Gordonvale community something that “little bit more than just a pub”.

Leaving Mackay and the mining industry it’s been a big change for them but they are enjoying being part of a friendly township, with Brad becoming the Chairman of the Liquor accord and Vice President of the Pyramid race committee they are always there to lend a hand to help out with the fantastic events that are held here every year and be involved in the community as much as possible.

The tavern will continue to see some changes over the year with upgrades to the restaurant and bar equipment coming soon. Ongoing events within the venue include, Texas hold-em poker every Thursday and Saturday night, pool comps Wednesday night, live bands Fridays, fresh seafood buffet 4 times a year, Jag the Joker Saturdays from 2pm, darts board, pool tables, Keno, Gaming room, Night life juke box system, meal specials in the restaurant every night of the week and much much more. The M.O.B held their first charity bike ride last week to raise money for the Murry street community centre, with great success they hope to hold it annually to help raise money for charities all while having a great day out followed by music and fun at the Tavern.

Frank Reys grew up in the Gordonvale area and gained his horse riding skills initially, from his aboriginal mother and by chasing brumbies and riding bareback. At 41 years of age and being the oldest jockey, he won the Melbourne Cup in 1973 on a 4 year old gelding called ‘Gala Supreme’. Frank Reys became the first indigenous person to ever win the Melbourne Cup. What a terrific achievement!
