Gordonvale Library celebrated its diamond anniversary in February, having operated in its current location for 60 years.

Boasting Queensland's favourite Librarian in Trish Richards, Gordonvale Library is a much-loved part of Gordonvale's village-style community. Gordonvale Library epitomises the traditional country library," Division 1 Councillor Steve Brain said.

"Some things may have changed over the years, such as the introduction of computers as a library staple, but the important things have remained untouched.

It's still a hub of community life; a source of information and recreation; a place where everyone is treated to a friendly smile and warm welcome.”

Gordonvale Library was opened in its current location by the then Mulgrave Shire Council on 19 February 1954. The building was purchased by the council three years earlier and the interior was remodelled for library purposes.

This included two outdoor reading rooms, one for adults and the other for children. Prior to moving into the current premises, the library operated from the original School of Arts building at the corner of Norman and Cannon Streets.

Gordonvale Library now boasts a collection of about 9500 items, with access to the full Cairns Libraries catalogue of more than 200,000 items.

In 2013, the library received 98,756 visitors, who borrowed 63,893 items. The library also contains a Cairns Regional Council customer service office.

A major refurbishment of the library building to increase customer space is currently in the planning stages.

One of the first sounds heard over Gordonvale Sunday morning, other than church bells, was the rifle fire coming from the Mulgrave Rifle Club range near the old council dump. This was preceded the previous night by the sound of the accordion, leaf and bagpipes heard at Scouts Hall, where the Caledonian Society held a Scottish dance every fortnight. Gentlemen were charged 2 shillings and ladies had to take a plate of nibbles.

The clip clop of horses could be heard either ridden, drawing vehicles or sometimes just strays, looking for some fresh grass. The sounds of train whistles and excess steam, were a daily occurrence, particularly when trains were getting up steam to make it up the cutting. The train driver blew the whistle to make children dive off the railway bridge into the river to prevent them being run over. At the station you could hear the screech of the large faucet at the water tank and the rattle of chains to open valves on the tank when filling the water tender.

During the cane season, the Mulgrave Mill used approximately 7 locos to haul and shunt cane. There was always the constant noise of whistles, steam and clanging when cane was being hauled or shunted.

Most goods were home delivered in the early days, so there was the constant sound of different vendors calling out the names of their wares, such as ‘grocer’, ‘baker’, ice’, ‘butcher’, ‘vegetable’ or ‘wedge-abul’as most green-grocers were Chinese except “Long Bean”Charlie who was an Italian. Milkman came, with the rattle of their cans of raw milk in the carts. With the sound of the one pint and quart measuring jugs clanging together. Then there was the ice-cream man ringing his bell when driving his horse and cart.

The sound of cross cut saws was the most prevalent as every home cooked on a wood stove, except for a few that cooked using the kerosene stove. Sawing was done on saw horses by members of the family, particularly on Saturday afternoons, as Saturday mornings everyone was still working. This noise was soon followed by the sound of the axes splitting wood for the stove or kindling.To Be Continued...

Southern Suburbs Junior Rugby League are ready to kick off the 2014 Season with a fresh new look thanks to the generosity and support of Local Businesses.

Southern Suburbs Junior Clubhouse has been given a make-over with thanks to Dan and Belinda Vella, of Vellacorp Painting Services who donated their services and arranged for the Canteen, Office and exterior of the Club to be painted. Dulux Scott St. Trade centre kindly donated the exterior paint. The walls were cleaned and prepared by Craig of Under Pressure Cleaning. Suburbs parents and players joined forces in a working bee weekend, replacing the guttering and down pipes and giving the venue a good old clean up. SSJRL is one of the only Junior Rugby League clubs to boast they own their clubhouse, much of the revenue raised through fundraising efforts goes straight back into the necessities such as Rates and Insurances therefor we truly appreciate the generosity and support these Locals give to our Club, we would definitely struggle to function effectively without them.

The committee would also like to acknowledge our team sponsors (also local businesses) who have committed to the club providing teams with new jerseys and much needed equipment required by our up and coming rugby League Stars. Many of these businesses have been with us for many years. Mulgrave LandcareBiodiversity ProjectMulgrave Landcare’s ‘Biodiversity Project’is all about working with local partners torevegetate any significant gaps in the tree linealong the Mulgrave River and its tributaries, andto bring problem weeds such as Pond Apple and Hymenachne, down to a manageable level of control.

This project is supported by Mulgrave Landcare and Catchment Group through funding from the Australian Government with additional support from Terrain NRM and the Cairns Regional Council.

Since July last year we have planted another 2,500 trees and treated up to 4ha of Hymenachne along the Mulgrave River, and, Figtree and Hobson Creeks.

Now is the perfect time for tree planting and another 600 trees will be planted on Hobson Creek, Sunday afternoon, March 16. We need lots of help to get these trees in the ground before the wet season is over. The holes are pre dug and it is a good family activity, so come along if you can. Another great family activity is toad catching, especially when you consider that they were first released in this area in 1935!

During Earth Hour on the 29th of March, Mulgrave Landcare and Gordonvale State School are encouraging families to catch cane toads then BRING THEM IN ALIVE to Norman Park on Sunday morning the 30th between 8and 9am for collection.

They will then be taken to the Conservation Volunteers Australia drop off point where they will be measured and weighed. Last year a Gordonvale State School student won the prize for the longest toad. You could be next!

This article was prompted by a reader who sent a photo to us at the office of the Mulgrave News, which highlights the only natural pyramid in the world, Walshs’ Pyramid.

The Pyramid has a wonderful walking track for the fit and adventurous and takes about 3-4 hours walking to reach to the top. Once at the top, you are able to take in spectacular views, from the reef to the rainforest.

The track takes about 3-4 hours to get to the summit, but once there it is a very rewarding experience and well worth the effort. Walshs’ Pyramid is Part of the Wooroonooran National Park which also takes in the many more beautiful attractions.

Travelling along the Gillies Highway towards Atherton there aremany natural swimming areas such as Peets Bridge and Ross and Locke. Turning left off the Gillies Highway across Peets Bridge and a short drive takes you through to Goldsborough camping grounds which once again provides for freshwater swimming, beautiful camping and day visit areas including barbecues.

Walking to the end of the road at the camping ground takes you to another walking track and following this will take you all the way to The Boulders which is just west of Babinda. This track is quite long and at least 1 days walk is required.

At the southern end of the town we reach more natural swimming areas including Greenpatch which has been a favourite for many years. For those not quite up to walking the Pyramid, Behana Gorge lends itself to quite an energetic adventure. In full flood Behana Gorge is an amazing site and well worth the walk.

The Gordonvale township itself is scattered with character including many of the old buildings and parks. From the Ye Ole Gordonvale Hotel to the Ambulance Building, Gordonvale is one of the only areas left in the Far north to keep it wonderful character. Lets hope that it remains this way for years to come.

Welcome to this month’s Editorial and all things Real Estate. In the news this month is a continuing debate over the State Government's controversial new legislation for the real estate industry with the findings to be reported early March.The Property Occupations Bill will cut a lot of red tape for the Industry with many repetitive forms required for the purchase of a Property to be simplified, making signing a Contract much easier. Although

most of the Bill's changes have been supported by the industry, the proposal to ban advertising price guides for homes going to auction in the state has divided agents.

REIQ General Counsel said the peak body supported the ban on price guides because a vendor chooses an Auction Method so that the public can determine what the value of that property is rather than imposing a figure on it at the outset, which may be too high or too low. An auction is the best method for establishing the market value of a property. If you want to advertise a price range then you should sell by private treaty.

Snakes on the move...It appears that snakes are on the move again in the Gordonvale with an unusual high number of reported sightings around the town and surrounds.

It comes after a man was airlifted in the early hours of February 13 from Walshs’ Pyramid after being bitten by an unknown species of snake. The man was camping on the Pyramid with friends when he was bitten.

Gordonvale is home to at least 5 of the most venomous snakes in Australia. With the warmer temperatures around, snakes are more active. Make sure that when you are exploring the many walking tracks especially the Pyramid that you take all necessary precautions including wearing closed in boots, long pants and long sleeved shirt. Carrying a compression bandage and a mobile phone is also a good idea.

You Beauty Opening InternationalWomen’s Day

Gordonvale Youth FundStudents, parents, teachers and coaches are being reminded of the Gordonvale youth fund. The Gordonvale youth fund is a community based organisation administered by the Mulgrave News that provides funds for children who attend sporting, cultural or artistic events throughout Queensland.

Being selected in representative teams especially from the far north can get quite expensive and we try to alleviate some of that cost by donating money to the cause. Our only criteria is that the particular representative writes a letter to us at the office 86 Gordon Street Gordonvale, that the representative lives in the coverage area of the Mulgrave news and it is verified by a parent or coach.

The Gordonvale Youth Fund is sponsored by the Ye Old Gordonvale Hotel who allows us to sell tickets each and every week to the patrons of the hotel. Last year over $2000 was distributed throughout the community to assist with travel, uniforms and sporting equipment. Letters can be sent to P.O. International Women’s Day (IWD) iscelebrated on March 8th across the world.

IWD is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, present and future. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women. International Women's Day is celebrated each year on March 8 and showcases women and their achievements worldwide. The Cairns Regional Council's Woman of the Year and Young Woman of the Year Awards celebrate the achievements of local women in enriching the lives of other women and girls.

"There are many ways that women contribute positively to the lives of others – through leadership, achievement, voluntary service and by empowering other women and girls to take control of their own destinies," Mayor Bob Manning said.

"Last year's Woman of the Year, Adrianne Hicks, has dedicated more than 20 years of her life to supporting people with mental illness and their families. She is just one of the unsung heroes whom these awards have uncovered over the years. We are now calling on residents to help us uncover one more."

Ms Hicks will be one of two guest speakers at Council's International Women's Day Breakfast, during which the awards will be presented. She will be joined by James Cook University's Dr India Bohanna, who has conducted extensive research into the areas of mental health and brain injury.
