A lifelong love of books and reading has culminated in a prestigious award for a local Gordonvale mother who has been honoured as the state’s favourite librarian.

Trish Richards, an employee of Cairns Regional Council, has worked with Cairns Libraries for six years, the last three years at Gordonvale Library.

In March Trish was nominated by an anonymous library customer and beat a strong pool of contenders to clinch the public-voted online poll.

Trish said she has always loved reading from when she was at school to when she became a mother and would read to her children.

“I always came into the Gordonvale Library and I loved the atmosphere. The richest reward of working in a library was being part of a young reader’s journey through the world of the written word. In a close-knit rural community like Gordonvale, you get to see the customers and their children grow up and develop as readers. I love seeing the excitement on a child’s face when they find a book that interests them.”

Trish was announced as Queensland’s winner ofthe inaugural Australia’s Favourite Librarian competition during Library and Information Week

20-24 May. At a celebratory morning tea at the Library on Thursday 23, Trish received a floral bouquet and box of chocolates from Ms Kerrie Still, Manager Cairns Libraries.

As the State’s winner Trish receives a year’s membership and subscription to the professional journals of the Australian Library and Information Association.

At the Healthy Citizen Expo, students from Gordonvale State School had the opportunity to learn about 16 different sport and recreation organisations they could access in their local area.

Hosted by Gordonvale State School as a strategy to promote our local sporting and recreational organisations, the expo was very popular amongst students and parents. Children were lined up to see if they could knock the jack in lawn bowls or throw a fast ball at the tennis display.

Cairns Regional Council officers had students hula hooping and Mulgrave Landcare gave native plants away. The Choi Kwan Do instructor taught some martial arts moves while stumps were being knocked over at the cricket display.

Traditionally a strong sport in Gordonvale, vigoro was showcased on the day, with local star players Megan Maloney and Lynelle Crappe demonstrating the unique batting equipment. There is a long history of this game in Gordonvale and it is hoped that along with the other sports, our juniors will take the opportunity to participate in some after school sport and recreation activities.

The organisations represented include: Pyramid Power (AFL), Mulgrave Athletics, Gordonvale Bowls Club, Mulgrave Cricket, Mulgrave Landcare, Southern Suburbs- Junior Rugby League, Souths Soccer, YMCA- Gordonvale, Gordonvale and District Tennis Association, Gordonvale Junior Touch Association, Gordonvale Scouts, Gordonvale Girl Guides, Cairns Regional Council - “Active Games in the Park”, Cairns Vigoro Association (Gordonvale Branch), Choi Kwan Do and Edmonton Dodgers Baseball.

Gordonvale Girl Guides are on the lookout for new members. Girl Guides Australia is one of the largest organisations in Australia for girls and young women.

It provides leadership and personal skills development to its 30,000 members, including 22,000 youth members. Girl Guides provide a non-formal educational program that is dynamic and flexible while offering values based training in life skills, decision making and leadership.

The Australian Guide Program is delivered to girls by trained volunteer leaders. Girl Guides are a not-for-profit organisation that involves volunteers at all levels of its operations and an organisation that involves volunteers in its work to enable our members to gain maximum benefit from the unique knowledge and skills volunteers are able to offer.

Our Mission is to enable girls and young women to grow into confident, self respecting, responsible community members. Our 2015 Aspiration is to be Australia’s leading organisation for girls and young women in leadership and personal development.

The Gordonvale Cane Farmer StatueBy Wendy Maddocks & Tina Elmer

If there is one item in Norman Street that draws great interest from locals and visitors alike, it has to be the statue in the middle of Norman Street, on the park side, known locally as “The Hoe Man”.

Modeled on a photo supplied by Mrs. May Crossland, the statue is not of a “hoe man” as such, but depicts a cane farmer from an earlier time when the work of hoeing, weeding (chipping), planting and cutting the cane and disposing of the rubbish was done by the cane farmer and members of his family. The teams of cane cutters came later.

The statue was bequeathed by the estates of Charlie and May Crossland to honor the pioneers of the sugar industry in the Mulgrave Area. Designed and Sculptured by Mrs. Anna Holan, it was made at the Holan Foundry in Bungalow, Cairns.

with the Mulgrave Central Mill in their Centenary Year, CSR Sugar Mill Group, The Queensland Government Arts Grant Programme and The Cane Growers Cairns District.

It was designed by Art Busters of Brisbane who also sent their own tilers to lay the mosaic. Many local residents helped with the construction as well, including Mr. Frank Dall’alba and Mr. Vito Fermo.

Both the statue and mosaic were dedicated and unveiled by Cr T.A. Pyne on the 22nd April 1995 with a font inscription which reads: “Sugar – Nature’s Sweet Gift.” The sculptress, Mrs. Anna Holan, now lives in Tasmania.

Gordonvale was a thriving bustling little town in 1946. There were three large Grocery/Drapery shops, Bryce’s, Lowry’s and Messina’s. At these stores you could buy groceries, hardware, drapery, Manchester, mens and ladies wear, shoes and hats. The town also had three butcher and three bakery shops.

There was no problem getting in to a hairdresser as we had three men’s barber shops owned by – Alf Setter, Snow Toms and Vince Bellino. We had four ladies’ hairdressers operated by– Kathy Kaine, Gloria Furlong, Ruth Way and a German lady as well. We had two chemist shops to choose from operated by Jim Louis and John Pritchard.

Lanskeys Saddlery was the local saddler in Gordonvale and the family still operates a Lanskeys Saddlery in Cairns today. Les Miller was the local watch maker and jewellery shop in Gordon Street. There was a billiard saloon and café in Gordon Street and Mick Court owned a café in Norman Street and The Tyrol Tea Rooms, next to where the squash courts are today.

Nellie Asaki had the fish & chip shop on the corner of Bell Lane and Gordon Street. The fish & chips were the best and always kept piping hot in newspaper wrapping. There were six hotels, four are still in operation and two of them are no longer standing. Of those two, one was located where the video shop is and the other was across the railway line next to the museum in Gordon Street.

Also in Gordon Street, there was a men’s wear shop operated by Steve Thimios and a ladies frock shop operated by Liz Undy. Gordonvale Hospital was well established with Outpatients, Maternity ward, Operating Theatre, private and public wards. The hospital was serviced by 3 private doctors- Dr. Percy, Dr. Brody, Dr. Davis and a hospital doctor. We had two dentists –Charlie Anderson and Eric Charlton.

Milk was delivered to shops and houses by two milkmen – Bob Allison and Harry Napier. The milk came from Harry’s dairy up at Goldsborough. Fruit and veggies were delivered by horse and cart to your door by a chinese man named Jang Tim and another chinese man called Mr Hoi-Kee owned a fruit and vegetable shop in town. The town blacksmith was Mr Harris and a replica of his workshop can be seen at the Mulgrave Settlers Museum.

High pressure clean driveways, exterior walls, eves and roof, if needed - this often saves any thought of painting and brings surfaces up like new. Have a copy of your rates notice, a survey plan of the block, especially if there are easements, a copy of the House Plan as all these documents allow for an easier sales process.

Pet of the Month

Record numbers participated in National Walk Safely to School Day at Gordonvale State School. 250 members of the school community joined local police officer, Paul Van Den Bos and Councillor Steve Brain to walk to school from the BP Service Station or the Council Depot. All walkers were served a healthy breakfast by the school tuckshop.

This annual event encourages children and parents to lead a healthier, more active lifestyle by incorporating more walking as part of the family’s daily routine. The event also promotes reduced car-dependency, cleaner air and road safety to primary school children throughout Australia.

This year a new WSTSD App for Apple and Android smartphones has been introduced. This FREE App allows children and parents/carers to track their kilometres travelled to and from school, time spent walking and their average walking speed. You can down load your FREE WSTSD App at www.walk.com.au.

As 2014 draws nearer Gordonvale High is preparing for the arrival of our first cohort of year 7 students.

To ensure a smooth transition when Year 7 becomes a part of high school in Queensland, from 2015, the government is taking a number of practical steps to prepare for the move, including piloting Year 7 in 20 state schools before 2015. As the only pilot school in the far north, introducing Year 7 before the statewide change in 2015, Gordonvale High is working hard at developing a distinct Junior Secondary identity and strengthening support for students in Years 7, 8 and 9.

A regular column in the Mulgrave News aims to keep parents and the wider community informed about up coming events and information sessions related to the Flying Start at Gordonvale High.

June: Enrolments are now taking place for year 7 in 2014 packages are available from the school’s administration office. Work begins on the Year 7 Precinct. An exciting new two-storey learning area specifically designed for the needs of Junior Secondary students. This is an exciting time for Gordonvale SHS and we are looking forward to sharing our journey with our local community.

North Queensland Animal Rescue Inc. (NQAR) aims to r e s c u e h o m e l e s s a n d abandoned pets from local pounds and private surrenders.

All pets will be desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated before being adopted out to wonderful new homes.

NQAR is an Incorporated Association and is run completely by volunteers. We are a c o m p l e t e l y n o n - p r o f i t organisation and do what we do because we love animals and care about their welfare.

NQ Animal Rescue

Peninsula HockeyCongratulations to Ashley Raymond a year 7 student at Gordonvale State School for his selection in the Peninsula Hockey team.

After being selected at the trials in May this year Ashley now will compete in the State titles in June at the Gold Coast on June 13th.

Ashley plays in the midfield and currently plays for Brothers Hockey Club in Cairns. There will be a total of 10 regions competing at the Gold Coast at the state titles where Ashley will get the opportunity to be accepted into the Queensland side.

Cairns Hockey is currently looking for players of all ages. Games are played on synthetic turf at the Cairns North Hockey Fields on Saturdays.
