ousands of western suburbs students are learning in a growing
number of sub-standard portable classrooms, new gures have
revealed.
In some schools, more than half the students will study this
year in relocatable buildings.
An Education Department tender document has outlined that
population growth, high-density suburban development and emerging
regional growth corridors and constraints on capital investment
have increased the demand for portables.
West goes goes goes economy economy economy classAustralian
Education Union
Victorian branch president Meredith Peace blamed a lack of
foresight for the unprecedented number of portables popping up at
school grounds in the west. She said there needed to be more
investment in, and planning for, the states growth corridors.
eres a desperate need for schools and those schools havent been
built quickly enough, Ms Peace said.
I think were seeing a greater pressure on relocatables because
the previous government
didnt act fast enough to ensure we had new schools.
A spokesman for the department said relocatables oered a exible
and ecient solution to address various issues.
e relocatables provide state-of-the-art learning environments
comparable to a schools permanent classrooms, the spokesman
said.
Melbournes outer western suburbs are the fastest-growing area of
Victoria. So schools in the area typically receive more of the
relocatables.
e number of portable classroom
transfers across the state is expected to rise from about 160 in
2012-13 to 260 this nancial year. Meanwhile, 61 portable classrooms
were transferred to schools in the western suburbs last nancial
year, followed by 58 in the south, 53 in the north and 24 in the
east.
e department is now seeking expressions of interest to transfer
the buildings in a bid to cut the programs annual cost of $30-$40
million.
e Andrews government made an election pledge of $50 million to
replace 250 portable classrooms and $510 million to rebuild schools
across the state.
A Jurassic world has come to life at Woodgrove shopping centre
as life-sized moving dinosaurs roar into town for the holidays.
Youngsters can discover all manner of animatronic dinosaurs,
including Triceratops, just as a paleontologist would. Eoin and
Montanah (pictured) put on lab coats and eye shields before busily
chipping away on their own take-home fossils. Daily guided dino
tours are hosted by rangers at 11am, noon and 1pm, before a campre

week until Friday, January 30. Details of Woodgroves school holiday

Housing aordability and family breakdowns have forced many
Melton people from their homes in the past year.
Melton councils housing services recorded about 1500 calls for
help during 2014.
Melton councils acting family, youth and housing manager, Rohna
Pedretti, says there is an ongoing demand for housing assistance in
the city.
Many contributing factors are leading to people experiencing
homelessness or being at risk of homelessness, Ms Pedretti
said.
ese factors can include family or relationship breakdown; family
or partner violence; abuse or neglect; drug, alcohol or gambling
addictions; family homelessness; unemployment and poverty; and lack
of aordable housing.
Data released by the Council to Homeless Persons indicates the
number of homeless people in Melton climbed 30 per cent between the
2006 and 2011 censuses.
While homeless numbers at Moorabool are slightly lower, even one
is a huge concern, mayor Paul Tatchell said.
is isnt a governments problem; this problem belongs to
everybody, Cr Tatchell said.
Not everyone has the capacity to bail themselves out of the
problem. is problem will grow until we, as people, start to take
some role in being humans to other humans.
And Bacchus Marsh locals Peter Turner and Gavin Fenech have
opted to play their part by raising money to help the citys most
vulnerable residents.
I had a limited perspective of what it meant to be homeless and
we just assume theres an issue with drugs, Mr Fenech said.
Humanity in demand
Peter Turner and Gavin Fenech are behind a music festival to
help the homeless. (Kristian Scott)
Its hard to relate to [what makes people homelessness], but some
people assume theres going to be a level of freedom aer all the
abuse and feelings of insecurity they experience.
People are living in makeshi camps under bridges and down in the
bushes.
e pair helped organise a music festival last weekend to raise
money for a caravan park in Bacchus Marsh, similar to the one in
Ballan, which has been very successful.

A special guest will visit Moorabool Shire on Australia Day.
Christine Durham, this years Australia Day ambassador, will join
the shires celebrations on Monday, January 26.
Dr Durham, the 2014 Victorian senior Australian of the year, had
her life changed aer sustaining a severe brain injury in a horric
car accident.
She woke up in intensive care with multiple breaks to more than
half her ribs, a brain injury resulting in diculty speaking,
eating, thinking and walking; and a fractured orbit in her le eye
and double vision.
But Dr Durham was determined to ght her way back. She used her
experiences to inspire others and has since written books,
conducted workshops and gained an international reputation as a
professional learning presenter.
I do a lot of talking to people about having your life changed,
being positive and nding ways to help yourself, Dr Durham said.
Triumph is made up of two words try and umph. Never give up, no
matter what happens.
Dr Durham will share her story at the councils Australia Day
ceremony.
I think its very important that people see that everything is
possible, that pigs can y and amazing things can happen, she
said.
Dr Durham will also present award recipients with a hope
stone.
She said the stone represented something very hard, a reminder
we can tackle the hard stu.
And on the stone is a star to remind recipients that by tackling
the hard issues they can reach for the stars.

Brazen thieves have been robbing car washes in the western
suburbs.
Sergeant Andrew Button, of the Melton crime investigation unit,
warned locals to keep an eye out for thieves targeting car washes,
mainly in Melton, Caroline Springs, Gisborne and Werribee.
Weve noticed a series of break-ins at car washes where people
are trying to steal loose change from coin tins, Sergeant Button
said. We think the break-ins are related.
Sergeant Button declined to comment on the nature of
investigation but said police were pursuing a number of leads.
They believe the thieves are three men in their early 20s.
They try to gain access to the [coin machines], Sergeant Button
said.
They cause a lot of damage to the machines and to the coin
mechanisms in the process.
He said the spree started last month and the thieves had already
broken into 10 car washes.
They had robbed some premises more than once.
Theyre mostly opportunistic crimes, happening at night or in the
early hours of the morning, Sergeant Button said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on
1800 333 000.

Jet skiers and boaters now have more banking area at Pykes Creek
Reservoir following zoning changes.
Southern Rural Water has developed zones at the creek to allow
for one access area to cater for water skiing and a larger area for
mooring vessels.
Water supply manager Edward Smith said the new zones would
increase the safety for all those on the water over summer.
ese days, the number of jet skis at Pykes far outweighs the
number of boats and other vessels put together, Mr Smith said.
at means there are a lot more vessels on the water to manage,
and we need more bank areas where they can moor when theyre not
being used.
Mr Smith said Southern Rural Water had also created a separate
area for non-motorised craft, such as canoes.
is way, water skiers, jet skiers and canoeists can all use the
reservoir more safely, he said.
For safety reasons, there is a cap of 80 vessels on the water at
any one time.
e changes have been endorsed by the Pykes Creek community
advisory committee to help plan for long-term management of the
recreational facilities at the reservoir.
For more information about the zoning changes, call South Rural
Water on 1300 139 510.

A gate separating properties on Lohs Lane in Myrniong is
dividing residents, with one couple ghting for its removal.
Scott and Olivia Fisher applied unsuccessfully to the council
last May for cancellation of an agricultural licence, which applies
to 500 metres of the lane, and for the gate to go.
Under conditions of the agricultural licence, a gate is
required. But Mr Fisher said the land was no longer used for
agriculture and the gate blocked access to his property.
Four properties on Lohs Lane are outside the gate; three are
behind it.
Mrs Fisher said her property was hard to reach.
Its our only access, she said. Everyone should have access to
their property.
e Fishers will submit a new request at the February council
meeting, asking that Lohs Lane no longer be classied an unused
road.
Mrs Fisher said the familys main concern was that while it was
deemed unused, that part of Lohs Lane would not be maintained.
Were hoping the council uses common sense and says, How can we
have three houses and no road that leads there?, she said.
Ambulance Victoria, Bacchus Marsh police and Myrniong re brigade
have all expressed their concerns over the road, and letters from
each will be presented at the council meeting.
A petition signed by more than 50 road users, including delivery
drivers, tradesmen and visitors, will also be submitted.
Neighbour Monica Bartels, who told the council in May the gate
should be closed at all times to stop o-road bikes, said this week:
I nd it strange the matter is again before council given the
council gave it due and proper consideration in May.

Bathurst burr alertMoorabool residents are being warned to watch
out for Bathurst burr, a very prickly thistle that pops up after
summer rain. The weed has spikes that cause animals to go lame; it
gets in their wool and injures shearers. It can also can cause
nasty injuries to people and puncture bicycle tyres. The weed often
grows beside roads and tracks, and in cropping paddocks, and the
best way to deal with it is to hoe it out, bag it and burn it.

Consumer Aairs Victoria has urged Wyndham residents to be wary
of travelling conmen following reports of two men oering bitumen

In both cases, residents were approached by the men saying a job

Aer becoming suspicious, residents refused to hand over
money.
Wyndham police crime prevention ocer Craig McDonald encouraged
people to be vigilant about common rip-os, such as cheap roof

A Proud Community Growing Together
Melton City Council Community NewsMOVING AHEAD
Happy New Year! The Christmas rush is well and truly behind us,
and I for one hope that all our residents enjoyed a safe and joyous
festive season with family and friends. Summer is well and truly
upon us so now is a great time to get out
and enjoy all the fun- lled activities our wonderful community
has to offer. A great family event that I encourage all residents
to attend is Councils Australia Day celebrations at the Willows
Historical Park, next Monday.Australia Day is a wonderful
opportunity to celebrate the great things this country has to
offer, and welcome all the new citizens who have chosen to call our
community home. So, come along and enjoy kids activities and live
entertainment.
Those of you who have been getting out and making the most of
our long, summer days will certainly have noticed the marked
increase in the number of trees and shrubs popping up throughout
our community.
Council has an extensive tree planting program that improves the
look and feel of neighbourhoods, while providing shade and
attracting wildlife. Over 2,000 trees have been planted in the last
year across the City, including Melton, Diggers Rest, Caroline
Springs and Rockbank, to name a few.
Council also has a responsive tree planting program for
residents whod like a tree planted on their nature strip. If you
are willing to water the tree regularly to help establish it and
would like more information, contact Council on 9747 7200.
I am available to meet with residents most Saturday mornings
from 9am, by appointment. Please contact Barb McKenzie on 9747 7200
to book a time, or contact me directly on 0412 584 224 or via email
at [email protected]
Welcome to 2015! I hope that you all enjoyed the Christmas break
and are looking forward to the year ahead. Summer is such a

and activities, including our Australia Day celebration at
Willows Historical Park in Melton on Monday 26 January. There will
be family entertainment, the presentation of the community
achievement awards and a citizenship ceremony which will see around
180 residents sworn in as new citizens. I would like to take this
opportunity to welcome all of our new citizens and congratulate you
on your decision to become an Australian citizen. I wish all our
new citizens happy and prosperous lives in Australia and,
importantly, in our great City. Early next month we are holding
pre-budget community engagement sessions to gain your feedback on
what you think Councils priorities should be over the next nancial
year. The sessions will be held on Thursday 5 February, 6.30 9pm at
the Melton Library and Learning Hub and Saturday 7 February, 10am
1pm at the Caroline Springs Civic Centre and Library. I encourage
you to come along and speak to Councillors and staff who will be

information visit www.melton.vic.gov.au
On a nal note, I would like to congratulate Melton South Tennis
Club for coming 6th in a Tennis Australia competition in the lead

Romanian player, Simona Halep. If Simona wins the Australian Open,
the City of Melton and the Melton South Tennis Club will win a
number of prizes. I encourage all residents to get behind Simona
and show your support during her Australian Open campaign.

Lessons for lifeA growing number of studies show that music
lessons in childhood can do something perhaps more valuable for the
brain than childhood gains: provide benets for the long run, as we
age, in the form of an added defense against memory loss, cognitive
decline, and diminished ability to distinguish consonants and
spoken words. Not only that, you may well get those benets even if
you havent tickled the ivories, strummed the guitar, or unpacked
your instrument from its case in years. And dividends could even be
in store if you decide to pick up an instrument for the very rst
time in midlife or beyond.Piano teachers across the world will have

Adults assume that if they didnt learn to play piano as a child,

13 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 20, 2015
Most children sing and dance almost as soon as they walk, often
in front of the TV mimicking The Wiggles. Not only is dancing a
great way to keep youngsters entertained but it also has health and
cognitive benets. Its a great way to improve strength and exibility,
posture and balance, and helps children express themselves,
according to the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, one of
the worlds leading dance examination boards. Some kids may be bored
running around a track or playing other sports but dancing provides
them with a fun way to keep t and out of trouble while meeting new
friends.Dancing helps with co-ordination, which is necessary for
many other sports and life activities. And bopping along to a beat
is ideal for children to improve their memory by learning new steps
and moves for various routines. Non-verbal communication is another
skill toe-tappers can add to their repertoire, which is something
they learn while boogieing.Local dance schools offer a range of
dance classes suited to boys and girls, whether they choose to be a
ballerina or a hip-hop, tap, rap or jazz dancer.Singing to
favourite songs is part of the dance experience and can be benecial
to young minds too. Singing helps in childrens speech development
and language construction, along with teaching them about tone,
beat and rhythm.Dance schools often have singing classes as part of
their programs, allowing children to embrace two things they love
while being creative and learning, probably without even realising
it.Parents looking for new activities to keep their kids away from
computer games and too much TV may nd their local dance school has
the answer. With classes catering for toddlers through to teens,
theres bound to be a move and grove session that appeals.

Built about 12 years ago and in popular Princeton Park estate,
this is a house decorated in a style that older buyers will nd
appealing. But what makes it an actual all-rounder is that, with
very few cosmetic changes (a lick of paint and different window
furnishings), it would become a place that a young family will
relish. And the amount of work done in the backyard is amazing,
perfect for all-age buyers looking to have a ready-made,
beautifully done, outdoor area.
Entry is into a tiled hallway, to the right of which is an open
carpeted lounge room with windows dressed in top-quality drapes.
That same look can be found in
the main bedroom, opposite, which has a set of four mirrored
robes and an en suite with a spa and timber vanity unit. Two more
bedrooms are down a carpeted hallway from the living hub, each with
mirrored robes; they share a separate toilet, and a bathroom with
Tassy oak vanity unit.
The entry hall continues, bisecting a carpeted dining room on
one side which has a full wall of built-in Tassy oak cabinetry; and
a study on the other side, also with built-in cabinetry including a
desk.
At halls end comes the living hub, with a tiled meals area under
an angled
ceiling, and a large, carpeted family room (pitched ceiling)
with two bay windows sporting window seats; in here, theres a
freestanding sectional display cabinet delivering plenty of
storage.
The kitchen has Tassy oak cupboards, a big walk-in pantry, a
concealed dishwasher, wall oven and 900mm gas cooktop and a garden
window behind the sink providing garden views.
Outside, its a feast of fragrance and colour. A timber walkway
heads from the meals zone to a pair of pergolas, both drenched with
wisteria one pink, one mauve. The walkway continues on to become an
arched bridge over ornamental

roses abound, and pretty owering shrubs of all descriptions create
pockets of bright colour. Every garden bed is tidily mulched and
sit amid sandy pebbled areas and, of course, theres a vegie patch.
Two 3000-litre water tanks with pump supply an irrigation system to
