As industrial networking increases, requirements for IT Security in industry are becoming more rigorous

Networked systems are more vulnerable At the latest since the computer worm Stuxnet, we know that industrial automation and control systems, even when not directly linked to the Internet, are vulnerable to attacks. How can operators protect system functions and data against malicious attacks, sabotage and espionage? Malicious attacks not only jeopardize data security, but also the operatio-nal safety of systems and installations. Analyses, assessments and tests play a key role in implementing appropriate security controls against these threats.

Smart Grid – Power from an array of intelligently linked sourcesEco-friendly, efficient and extremely flexible – Smart Grids are the future of electricity supply. Instead of purchasing power from only a handful of centralized suppliers, consu-mers can also feed electricity into the public network – for example, from solar power systems or cogeneration units. Both these small units owned by ‚prosumers‘ and large-scale plants such as offshore wind farms increase the share of intermittent energy sources. This is where the Smart Grid comes in, automatically matching energy supply and demand.

Smart Grid communicationsThe components in the Smart Grid need to be perfectly coordinated to ensure the decen-tralized supra-regional electricity grid functions without fail. For this reason, a host of standards including the IEC 61850, CIM (IEC 61970 and 61968), IEC 60870 and IEC 62351 provide the corresponding standardization guidelines.
