Dearest Friends,

It is with a great sense ofhumility and honor that Ihave accepted to serve as

the major superior of theBrothers of the Sacred Heartof the New England Province.I humbly accepted to beProvincial as animator andadministrator of the Brothersand of our ministries in NewEngland and England for thenext four years.

Having been head of Mount, first as Principal from 1986 to 1991 and then its firstPresident, I have grown inappreciation of the value ofleadership amidst dedicatedmen and women, committedto the education of the youngpeople entrusted to our care.It is an honor to continue myefforts in a comprehensive wayto ensure the life and missionof our founders Rev. AndreCoindre and Br. Polycarpremains active at Mount.

The French community of theBrothers of the Sacred Heart, founded in Lyon, France, in1821, responded in its mission-ary spirit to the people of theSouth, to come to the “newworld” to open schools for theFrench communities along theMississippi Valley. By the closeof the 19th Century, a vastnumber of Canadians weremigrating to the mill cities and towns of New England, and the Brothers embracedthe dream of assisting theseimmigrant families, educatingtheir children, preserving theirlanguage and enlivening theirCatholic faith.

The newly founded AmericanProvince of the Brothers ofthe Sacred Heart quicklyexpanded in New England, opening parish schools inManchester, NH in 1889, inNashua, NH in 1891, Haverhill,MA in 1894 and “Le PetitCollege” at Precious BloodParish,Woonsocket, RI in1898.These schools not onlynourished the faith and cultureof the French Canadian com-munities but enabled familiesto educate their children tothe 9th grade and beyond.

Throughout the 20th centurythe Brothers continued toexpand Catholic education inNew England. In 1909, theBrothers began their firstjunior-senior high school,Sacred Heart Academy inCentral Falls, RI and in 1924,Mount Saint Charles Academy. The school was soon recog-nized as an excellent seat oflearning and increasing enroll-ment and expansion markedthe ensuing years.Young menwere now being afforded anopportunity to attain a highschool diploma and manybecame the first in their familyto go on to college.

In the late 60’s, due to the religious vocation crisis andthe deterioration of buildings, many parish schools mergedand some were forced toclose their doors. In 1972,the leaders of Mount SaintCharles made the courageousdecision to expand the schoolinto a co-educational institu-tion. During the ensuingdecades, the school continuedto flourish. Mount achieved

accreditation by the NewEngland Association of Schoolsand Colleges and was twicerecognized as a Blue RibbonSchool of Excellence by theU.S. Department of Education.

The Brothers of the SacredHeart continue to maintain astrong presence, carrying onthe dreams of their founders. In partnership with lay educa-tors, they prepare students to meet the challenges of thenew millennium. Our studentsare guided by the school’s mission to develop their giftsand talents for the bettermentof themselves and in serviceto society.

As I end this academic year as President of the Academy,I have accepted to serve asMount’s next Chairman of the Board of Trustees. I lookforward with anticipation toMount’s bright future of edu-cating the next generation ofyoung people “who believe in God’s love, who live God’sLove, and who spread the loveof God” among themselves, their families and the largercommunity for the bettermentof the world.

God bless us all,

Br. Robert R. Croteau, SCPresident

Mt. St. Charles has begun its 85th year of educatingyoung men and women in

the tradition of the Brothers of theSacred Heart. Over the course ofthose years much has changed inthe world of education and in theworld itself. Life in 2008 is very different from what it was in 1928or 1948 or 1978.There is no doubtthat you would find Mount some-what different thanit was during yourdays here wereyou to visit us now.The challenges ofthe 21st Centuryhave necessitatedthat we respondappropriately inorder to prepareour students forlives and careers inthis new century.

Were you to visit Mount today, though, I think you would find thatwhat lies at the heart of the schooland its mission has not changed.Thecurriculum may be different, the way we go about teaching andlearning is somewhat different, andthe physical plant itself has changed. But what makes Mount the schoolthat it is has remained the samethrough all of these years. OurMission Statement, which is postedthroughout the school, reminds usall of what we are called to do andwhat we expect our students tobecome: “We challenge our studentsthrough a rigorous academic programand through religious and co-curricular

experiences to become people of faithwho use their talents and intellects toserve others.”

Yes, Mount is a college-prepCatholic high school. Academically,we strive to prepare our students tobe successful in college and beyond. But beyond their success in collegeand career, we strive to instill in ourstudents a desire to be of service to

others so that whether theybecome teachers or doctors orlawyers or engineers, they will livelives focused on making a differencefor others. A Mount graduate ishopefully one who opens his heartand his hands to others, one whofinds room in her busy day for thosewho need help, one who recognizesinjustice and works to combat it,one who, by his or her presence, brings Christ into the world andthus makes the world a betterplace.

In the pages of this magazine youwill read of some of the many waysin which our students today serveothers – students who visit nursing

homes, who tutor other students, who work in local soup kitchens, who volunteer to work with chil-dren with disabilities, who volunteerin hospitals. These values havebecome a way of life here at Mount. The younger students learn fromthe example of the older students. And our graduates take these valueswith them and will hopefully makethem a permanent part of theirlives.

Yes, the world has changed over the course of 85 years and Mounthas changed in response to thedemands of a changing society. Onething, though, has never changed. There are always those among us to whom we need to reach out.Mount continues to challenge itsstudents to reach out to those peo-ple – and our students respond inmany, varied, and marvelous ways. And the world is hopefully madebetter – one person, one moment, one day at a time.

Excelsior!

Students at Mount, in religionclasses alone, spend over31,424 hours per school yearhelping the elderly, tutoring, coaching, volunteering, cook-ing, cleaning, serving, shoveling, walking dogs, picking up trash, and the list goes on.

How did we get that number?Well, there are 268 students in the 7th and 8th grades atMount and 724 students inthe high school. The junior high students are required tooffer a minimum of 5 hours of service per quarter for atotal of 20 hours per year andthe high school students aminimum of 6 hours of serviceper quarter for a total of 24hours per year.

Therefore,

20 hours x 268 students = 5,360 hours

36 hours x 724 students = 26,064 hours

For a total of = 31, 424 hours

And this is just the beginning. Most of our students also per-form additional hours throughtheir participation in theNational Honor Society,Student AdministrativeCouncil, Best Buddies, MusicMinistry, Peer Ministry, ServiceOpportunity Depot, andschool sponsored food, cloth-

ing, toy, and book drives. Many Mounties have found anopportunity to carry this loveof service throughout theirlives. In this issue of MOUNTwe are highlighting just a fewof their stories.

Anthony VinciguerraAnthony graduated fromMount St. Charles in 1992 –but the values and inspirationhe found at MSC have stayedwith him as he has carved outhis life’s unique path.

After graduating from Mount,Anthony went on to studyEnglish and Religious Studies at the College of the HolyCross. While at Holy Cross he participated in various service trips, both locally (inWorcester, MA) and in ruralAppalachia. He spent his junioryear studying in Italy and traveling in Eastern Europe, while also participating in aformative intercultural dialogueexperience with the extremepoor in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

After finishing school at HolyCross, Anthony spent one yearas the first American partici-pant in the Eastern EuropeanJesuit Volunteer Corp, teachingEnglish to low-incomeHungarian-minority students inBratislava, Slovakia. Followingthis he returned to Mount toteach religion for a (very

enjoyable) six months, andthen went to Cuba for a yearto study religion and socialchange in the Latin Americancontext.

After his time in CubaAnthony moved on to studyReligion and Society at theGraduate Theological Union(in Berkeley, CA).While ingraduate school, he lived andworked at the OaklandCatholic Worker – a half-wayhouse and community centerfor Central American refugeesin inner-city Oakland.

Anthony left Oakland, andeventually found his way toMiami, FL, where he now lives. He spent one year workingwith the South FloridaInterfaith Committee forWorker Justice (organizing aworker-rights initiative for low-income immigrant workers),as well as a year withthe Archdiocese ofMiami’s Office ofSocial Advocacy.

Anthony currentlyteaches in theReligious Studiesdepartment at St.Thomas University(the Archdiocesan uni-versity for Miami, FL),and directs their Centerfor Justice and Peace. His work at the Centerfocuses on engaging thestudents, faculty and staffof the university in socialjustice issues on severallevels: Locally he coordi-nates the university’s

participation in communityorganizing efforts to curb violence and poverty in theuniversity’s immediate area;Regionally he connects stu-dents and faculty with farmworker organizations fightingfor better labor standards inthe fields of Central Florida;and Internationally Anthony’swork engages faculty and stu-dents in collaborative develop-ment projects in Miami’s sister-diocese of Port-de-Paix, Haiti.

In light of the political turmoil, food crises, and recent hurri-canes in Haiti the internationalcomponent of his work hastaken on a renewed emphasis. In partnership with theArchdiocese of Miami,Anthony leads a team of faculty and students at the university who are working on three long-term, social, economic and environmentaldevelopment projects in what is the poorest region of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The three projects are:

1) Kafe Lavi/Coffee of Life;2) Women’s Fair-Trade ArtisanProducts;

3)Solar Energy/SolarBakery Projects

Though he’s traveled theworld, and studied at a num-ber of universities, Anthonycites his time in the MSCMusic program (with MarcBlanchette) and his AP Englishclass as two of his most formational experiences.

One of his favorite Mount sto-ries, however, comes from asenior-year, homeroom morn-ing with Mr. Richard Lawrence. It was the day of a big tennismatch against Barrington, andAnthony and the other tennisteam members were excited.Amid the chatter, Anthony ranup to up to Mr. Lawrence, who was then the varsity ten-nis coach, and was characteris-tically busy correcting papers.“Hey Mr. Lawrence!” he asked.“Are you psyched for thematch today?!” Mr. Lawrencestopped his work. He paused. Then he slowly looked upfrom his desk, and answereddeliberately: “Vinciguerra. I’mpsyched when I brush myteeth.”

Anthonytries tolive withthat samepassionevery day.

Anthony currently lives inMiami, FL, and works at St.Thomas University. He can be contacted at [email protected].

Chickering Familywritten by John Chickering

Getting involved and helpingothers has been part of ourDNA for a long time, andprobably explains why Mountwas such a natural choice for us.

One of my first deliberateefforts at organized volunteer-ing began 25+ years ago whenI started visiting residents at a local nursing home inMaryland. During our timehere in Boston, the volunteer-ing has been a family passion. We’ve worked with severalvolunteer organizations in theGreater Boston area. The workhas ranged from painting, tovisiting at a hospital, to dress-ing up as oversized charactersin support of Reading isFundamental. I’ve led 4 trips to Pearlington, MS with theUnited Methodist Church’sVolunteers in Mission organi-zation.The trips have beenrewarding all the way around.

One funny story comes out of Monica’s senior yearwhen one of her teach-ers said something tothe effect of “... wellit’s not like any ofyou have gotten onan airplane andflown to NewOrleans...” I can’t

remember herexact reply, but I

believe Monica raised herhand and pointed out thatshe’d been several times. BothJennifer and Monica are active-ly pursing community servicestudies at Hood College inFrederick, MD. Jennifer is run-ning the Best Buddies programthere. Hood’s Best Buddiesprogram is nearly the size ofthe University of Maryland’sdespite the fact that theUniversity has nearly ten timesthe population of Hood.

I’m currently planning our nexttrip to Mississippi for March7th - 14th. I welcome the sup-port of anyone in the Mountcommunity who is interestedin going with us.

If you would have asked mewhy I do it several years ago,I’d probably say something tothe effect of “I can’t not getinvolved.” I’ve grown spirituallyover the last couple of yearsand now know that I’m simplyfollowing God’s call.

I was a six-year-old boy whowas very nervous to be atone of New England’s busiestairports: Boston LoganInternational Airport (KBOS).This flight was going to beinteresting; it was a six-hourflight direct to Lisbon, Portugalon a SATA International AirbusA310.The effect of Newton’sFirst Law of Motion (inertia)was amazing. Furthermore, with a beautiful landing onrunway 03 in Lisbon (LPPT), Iknew from that point onwardthat I wanted to become aprofessional pilot. After a fewyears of begging my parents,

they took me down to NorthCentral to sign up for flyinglessons under one condition:I would have to help them payfor it as this is a very expen-sive hobby. I knew that I hadto start training in smallerplanes and that is why I start-ed at Skylanes, locat-ed at North CentralState Airport, “thebiggest little airport inRhode Island.” I cur-rently have over 30hours and I am nearlydone with all thenecessary training butstill have 10.4 hours

to go before I am eligible to goon my examination. I hope togo to Embry-RiddleAeronautical University, locatedin Daytona Beach, FL. Aftergraduation, I hope to enter the airline industry as a FirstOfficer at a regional airline suchas Atlantic Southeast Airlines,a Delta Connection partner.

I arrived atMount withmy youngerbrotherFrancis inSeptember,1938; I as asophomoreand Francis

an 8th grade pupil. The previ-ous year we were students atthe Sacred Heart Brothers’school in Sharon, MA which isnow closed. We were assignedto the 2nd Section under thesupervision of BrotherMichael. On the eve of theHurricane we were playing onthe old playground used byboth the 1st and 2nd Sections. It was also the school’s base-ball field, practice football field, and was used as an outside icerink which was built and main-tained by Bro. Michael and his‘boys’ every winter for use bythe boarding students.

I was sitting in the old baseballstands on the 3rd baselinetalking with friends. The windwas blowing up strong andBrother Michael called “All in!”from the playground.Thinkingback, I imagine he had heardover the radio of the impend-ing storm and winds. We nosooner got out of the standswhen a gust of wind blewover the upper 8 rows ofbenches. While running for the2nd section Hall, one of thekids got swept off his feet and

into the air bythe gusts ofwinds.

As we studiedin the StudyHall thatevening, thewinds blewharder andharder.Thatnight on the very top floor(4th floor dormitory) the ven-tilators rattled and rattled allthrough the night. It was not anight for sleeping. Being youngand naive and with no radioand news of the impendingstorm, we just accepted thestatus quo.

The following day we got thenews of the Hurricane that hitall of Rhode Island, even inlandto Woonsocket. We lookedout the classroom windowsdown into town and could seefactory roofs blown off by theterrific winds and buildingsdestroyed down town.Yet, notONE BRICK was loosened ordestroyed at Mount — on thehighest hill in town — not oneboarding student or Brotherwas affected. Outside the wallof the playground the twoabandoned empty water tankswere stove in — like onecrushing an empty soda can.The winds were that strong. The newer high water tank stillthere was unaffected.

I always thought that theGood Lord Jesus took care of

his Mountie boarding students. We all survived the “38Hurricane”.The statistics areawesome, considering we hadno warning of such severeweather conditions in thosedays.

21

“In terms of fatalities and propertydamage, the 1938 hurricane stands as one of the worst disasters in NorthAmerican history. In a matter of hours,688 people were killed, 4,500 wereinjured, and more than 75,000 build-ings were damaged. The states of NY,CT. and RI suffered their worst nationaldisaster in history. The tidal wave thathit Long Island and RI was so severethat earthquake instruments 3,000miles away recorded it on seismo-graphs. As a final cruelty the residentsof the North Atlantic states had littleor no warning that this meteorologicalevent was unfolding before them”.

Memories of the 1938 HurricaneMemories of the 1938 hurricane and how it affected me and others living at “The Mount” on that fatal day.

Mount Saint Charles wasa place to learn and atime to grow. As the

years pass, it becomes easierto realize what those yearsprovided us and it’s only natur-al to want to return the favor.Alumni donations are vital toMount and a great way to giveback to the community.Thereare many ways we can giveback to the school that did somuch to shape us. From creat-ing scholarships to makingdonations to the general fund, supporting Mount financiallycan be a particularly rewardingcomponent of your philan-thropic activities. Some simpleplanning can maximize thebenefits for everyone.

The Power of IndividualGiving

Historically, gifts from individualalumni provide the bulk ofcharitable support. In 2006,charitable contributions toeducational institutions in theU.S. reached $28 billion --over half of which camedirectly from alumni and otherindividuals, according to arecent Council for Aid toEducation report(www.cae.org).

Although major gifts, like Nikefounder Philip Knight’s $105million pledge in 2006 toStanford’s business school, receive a lot of exposure andpress coverage, the combinedvalue of smaller gifts from anarmy of contributors funds afar greater portion of educa-

tion. Donations provide anestimated 20% of annual edu-cation inflows.Without individ-ual gifts, it would be impossiblefor schools, such as Mount, tosponsor a full range of activi-ties.

The Smart Way to Give

Individual gifts can be made inmany forms. Unfortunately, donors often overlook theimportance of structuring theirgifts to maximum advantage.Eighty-five percent of donorsgive cash, often in directresponse to pledge drives. However, giving other assetsmay hold significant advantagesfor you and Mount.

For example, donating appreci-ated stock, rather than sellingthe shares and writing a check, allows you to give more andcan help trim your tax obliga-tions. For instance: If you sellstock that has appreciated by$100,000 and then donate thecash from the sale, you wouldpay at least $15,000 capitalgains tax and be able todeduct only the after-taxamount you contributed. However, if you give the stockdirectly, you can deduct the fullmarket value without payinggains tax. Plus, Mount receivesa larger donation.

The same holds true for dona-tions of other appreciatedassets as long as you meet theIRS’s requirement for a rigor-ous professional evaluation ofthe gift’s market value. However, artists may find itpreferable to sell their work

and then give a cash donation. That’s because artists can onlydeduct the cost of the materi-als used and not what theworks would fetch if sold.

The Value of Trusts

Different types of trusts canalso play an important role ingenerous and efficient gifting. ACharitable Remainder Trust(CRT) provides a paymentstream for the donor’s or ben-eficiary’s lifetime with the bal-ance of the assets going toMount when the trust expires. For instance, if you establish aCRT to benefit Mount andfund it with appreciated secu-rities, capital gains are deferredand your income tax obliga-tion lessened. You can chooseto set a term for the trust ofup to 20 years or for your life-time.The trust will then makepayments to you. When thetrust terminates, the remainingprincipal goes to Mount.

Similarly, a Charitable LeadTrust (CLT) provides Mountincome for the slated numberof years, after which theremaining assets pass to thedonor’s beneficiary.Thesetrusts are ideal vehicles fordonating highly appreciatedassets valued at $250,000 ormore.

Lastly, a Charitable GiftAnnuity (CGA) makes it possi-ble for you to receive anannuity with the balance paidto Mount upon death. With a
