I t has been a whirlwind sum-mer as we completed the firstpart of the West Wing
Project. We began the demolitionof the third floor of the WestWing area on June 13th and 69days later, we received our officialcertificate of occupancy for ournew computer technology center, our new academic learning cen-ter, a faculty computer lab, andtwo completely remodeled class-rooms.The next day, on August22nd, our students began a newacademic year, enthusiastic andexcited about our new techno-logically advanced learning space. As I entered the new computerclassroom a junior by whisperedto me, “Brother, this space is
REALLY NICE! Thanks so muchfor making this happen!”
We are so thrilled that we wereable to complete another phaseof the development of our build-ing, all in better service to ourstudents and their families.Thisagain has been possible throughthe dedication of board and com-mittee members, academicdepartments and administrators, students involved in theWalkathon, and the numerousdonors who believed in Mountand committed themselves tomake this $1,400,000 improve-ment a reality.
Of particular note was the dedi-cation of our Building and
Grounds Manager Br. RolandChampagne SC and TechnologyDirector Brenda Hammerschmidt, who worked at least six days perweek, with no time off, to makesure that we would be ready forthe opening of school.
We pray that they be blessed andthat all the benefactors who arepartners in our ministry thatmade this possible rejoice in thisnewest success story.
Sincerely yours,
Br. Robert R. Croteau, SCPresident

Usually this space is givento me to share with youthoughts and reflections
on life at Mount today. And Ienjoy being able to give you aglimpse of what’s happening in theclassrooms and hallways that weall shared over the years.
This month, I have chosen toshare with you someone else’swords because I find that they aretestament to all that is goodabout Mount and to what makesMount the unique school that it is.
The words are those of DavidRoderick, chemistry teacher, swimcoach, track coach, and sergeantin the U.S. Army. Currently, Dave is serving his second tour in Iraqand recently helped kick off ourannual walk-a-thon by addressingour high school students via aninternet link. You could have hearda pin drop as Dave addressednearly 700 students in the Mountgym. His address follows:
“Good morning Mt. St. Charles. It is an honor to speak with you
today. While there are manythings I could discuss with youtoday, I think the most importantthing to discuss is community.
In the six years since 9/11, I havespent almost half of that timeaway from the ones I love most –my wife Janet, my children Justinand Allie, and my second family, the Mount community. It has notalways been easy, but whether I have been walking the vast hallways of the Pentagon or thesands of Iraq, thoughts of youhave always been with me.
The thing about our school ofwhich I am most proud is oursense of community and how weas a school are always willing toreach out to others – whetherthey have been across the city oracross the globe. It is that senseof community that I cherish most.In that spirit, I would like you toreally think about what walk-a-thon means.Walk-a-thon is notjust a day to take off from schooland stroll the streets ofWoonsocket.Walk-a-thon is an
opportunity to give back to ourschool – a school that has givenso much to us.
Mr. Demers has told me that ourgoal is $125,000, but I think wecan do so much better that that.So when you’re thinking aboutgetting sponsors, think about the friendships, the laughter, thecommunity that is Mount andhow walk-a-thon provides youwith an opportunity to give backto Mount.
Never forget what a special placeMount is and how fortunate weare to have it. Let’s do all that wecan to improve it. May God blessyou and keep you until we meetagain.”
The Mount spirit is alive and well– even in the sands of Iraq.Excelsior ! !

We recently reconnected withMichael Guilbault ‘77 forthe first time in many years at
his 30th class reunion, and wewere so impressed.
Mike is an Air Force Veteran,Northeastern University graduate, Engineer and a quadriplegic as a result of anautomobile accident in 1995.
Mike is involved with all kindsof competitive sports andspends a lot of time mentoringnew spinal cord injury victims. He makes quite an impact oneveryone who comes into
contact with him. As quotedby Peter Moore, one of Mike’sprotégés, “Mike was one of thefirst people in a wheelchair toencourage me during physicaltherapy. To try to drive meharder by showing me whathe’s capable of as a quadripleg-ic. ‘I’ve always been in quad-denial!’ Mike says with a twin-kle. ‘When I was in the hospitalall they were telling me was I can’t do this and I can’t dothat. Ever since then I’ve beenproving them wrong on allcounts, one thing at a time.’”
Mike was a competitor andmedal winner in the 2007National Veterans WheelchairGames, medaling in the follow-ing events: air guns (Bronze),swimming (Gold), softball(Bronze), “I have been comingto the Wheelchair Gamessince 1998,” said Guilbault.“The Games are rehabilitationthrough recreation. Competingis challenging and keeps me fit. It is fun and I enjoy seeingthe peer mentoring and whatothers can do.”
Mike is also a competitor withthe New England Rollin’ RedSox.The Rollin’ Red Sox areNew England’s only wheelchairsoftball team and practices atthe Brockton VA Hospital inBrockton, MA where the firstwheelchair softball field in

Donating financialresources can be morecomplicated than just
writing a check. If you want toengage in lifetime gifting ofassets, you should be aware of
certain rules. For instance,in 2007, the maximum
annual gift tax exclusionamount is $12,000
per person whilethe lifetime
federal gift taxexclusion amountis currently $1
million, and willremain at that level
through 2009.
A Charitable RemainderTrust is a tax-exempt way to distribute income from the trust to beneficiaries for a period of time after whichremaining assets are distrib-uted to charities of yourchoice. You determine thetime frame of the trust—it canlast a lifetime or for a fixedterm of up to 20 years—aswell as the amount of annualpayouts.
Charitable Lead Trusts arefunded with assets that are, preferably, expected to appre-ciate.The charity of yourchoice receives a fixed annualpayout from the trust, with theremainder going to your familymembers at the end of thecharity’s payout term.
A Grantor RetainedAnnuity Trust allows you to pass assets you believe willappreciate in value to familymembers at discounted levels. You contribute assets to atrust and receive a fixed annuity payment stream for a specified period of years. At the end of the trust term, the remaining assets and theirappreciation (if any) are dis-tributed to your beneficiaries.
You could use life insuranceto help replace your estateand gift tax liabilities. Life insurance often provides asubstantial benefit for relativelysmall costs. A life insurancepolicy may be used by itself to increase the size of yourestate, or it may be used forcost-effectively paying estatetaxes.
A Limited LiabilityCompany or FamilyLimited Partnership mayhelp reduce the size of yourestate for transfer-tax purpos-es.The LLC or FLP is made up
of managing or voting interestsand nonvoting interests, andyou could gift the nonvotinginterests to your children andgrandchildren .
A Dynasty Trust could allowyou to establish a source offunds for multiple generations. Here’s how it generally works:You would fund the trust withan amount up to your andyour spouse’s lifetime gift taxexclusions. The trust assets, including any growth, willremain free of federal transfertaxes (i.e., estate, gift and generation-skipping transfertaxes) for as long as theyremain in the trust.
Discuss your estate planningobjectives and concerns withyour Financial Advisor andyour tax and legal advisors.Together, you can develop anestate plan that best addressesyour financial and family situations.
