places to visit.

that times, there were no Photoshop.

Or visit Zorikto Dorzhiev (born 1976) is an artist who works in easel painting, graphics, book illustration, sculpture, and as a set and costume de-signer. Or visit the expo timed to coincide with the 30th an-niversary of the Museum of

Surreal illusionism. Photographic Fantasies of

the early 20th century

www.intermarkrelocation.ru Moscow Digest 06

Page 16: Moscow digest 005.15 - February 28th & March 1st

The late 1890s saw the emergence of a number of factories in Europe that produced postcards with real photographs, by using mechanised exposure and development processes. Unlike today, the photo-graphs were not printed on the cards. The production of photographic postcards, also known as «real photo postcards», became a siz-able industry, and the end products were distributed as far away as South Amer-ica and Australia. The phe-nomenon only lasted for two decades, but resulted in mil-lions of photographs.

The golden age of photo-graphic postcards drew on early 20th-century urban popular culture.

The combination of images and drawings, and multiple exposure were some of the techniques used in industri-al photography a hundred years before «photoshop-ping». Because industrial colour photography was yet to be invented, the cards were coloured by hand. It is the craft that makes the im-ages unique.

The exhibition is organised in five thematic sections: Forward, Fotomontage, Fascination, Fancy and Fun. The curator of the exhibi-tion is art researcher, docent Harri Kalha.

Until April 19thMAMM15, Ostozhenka str.m. Kropotkinskayawww.mamm-mdf.ru/en

The rise of the cinema, the modern culture of sun-bath-ing, eroticism, circus and variety shows inspired the imagery of the cards. Tech-nical innovations, such as the aeroplane, stimulat-ed the imagination. In the 1920s and 1930s, a group of avant-garde artists and poets began to draw inspi-ration from dreams, fantasy and the depths of the un-conscious. An art move-ment known as surrealism emerged. The photographic postcards presented at the exhibition were «surrealist» before the word was even invented!

From today’s perspective, photographic postcards are fascinating particularly be-cause of the photomontage techniques used.

Zorikto Dorzhiev. Imagined Realty

Zorikto Dorzhiev (born 1976) is an artist who works in ea-sel painting, graphics, book illustration, sculpture, and as a set and costume designer. Having assimilated the fun-damentals of the Russian Academy of Arts and the “cosmopolitanism” of mod-ern European art, Dorzhiev nevertheless continues to follow national Buryat tradi-tions in his work.

The Artist. 2014 Dorzhiev’s creative method is built on a synthesis of several compo-nents, the most significant of which include the figura-tive tradition of the Russian Academy and the cultur-al heritage of the nomadic Buryat people. In 1996 he finished at the Buryat Republic School of Art and Culture in Ulan-Ude; in 2002 he graduated from the Krasnoyarsk State Art Institute, and from 2003 to 2005 he worked as an ap-prentice in the art studios of the Russian Academy of Arts.Instruction in the Acade-my’s artistic practices gave Dorzhiev the opportunity

Page 18: Moscow digest 005.15 - February 28th & March 1st

to assimilate important techniques in the construc-tion of form, colour arrange-ment and the compositional organisation of the image; skills which he would later utilize in his work. In his handling of tradition-al national images, Dorzhiev is both highly attentive and subtle. He successfully avoids populist reproduc-tions of familiar scenes and ethnographic or museum reconstructions Dorzhiev creates images which rich-ly embody the character-istic attributes of Central and East Asian culture: his closed, introspective char-acters for example, his taste for asceticism and refined forms, and the decorative elaboration of his surfaces.

Dangina (Beauty). 2005 The unbounded expanses of the Steppe often occupy the background of Dorzhiev’s works, and the comprehen-sion of the Great Steppe is a leitmotif in his oeuvre. Meanwhile, Dorzhiev has described the hero of his works, the Buryat nomad, in the following way: “For me, the nomad is an observer…he is an artist, a poet, a phi-losopher, and often a loner.”The artist’s work in cine-matography has had a con-siderable influence on the development of his creative method. S.Bodrov invited Dorzhiev to be the costume designer for his film “Mon-gol” (2004), and he also be-came one of the main artists on A.Fedorchenko’s film, “Celestial Wives of

the Meadow Mari” (2012). Here he faced a singular task: to arrange the general composition of the frames while simultaneously paying attention to the specifics of costume and decoration. Dorzhiev’s artistic language combines a basis of graph-ic silhouette with great ar-chetypal forms. As such, the rendering of the Oriental aesthetic is combined with the depiction of mythical legends of epic proportions. An illustrated catalogue with an introduction by A.K.Yaki-movich has been published to accompany the exhibi-tion. It includes not only works presented at the cur-rent exhibition, but entirely new pieces from the artist as well.
