Expo in Moscow

This week the expo selection will be all about the IX Moscow International

Biennale – Fashion and Style in Photography 2015.

We have already written about the fantastic exhibition of Robert Doisneau and the Exhibition about Surreal Il-lusionism, and now we wel-come the Guru of Photogra-phy Albert Watson, and some not so famus but not less in-teresting exhibitions of the young artsts Olga Izakson

and Igor Samolet.

OLGA IZAKSONJOURNEY

The black and white im-ages, in which Olga Izak-son references Alexander Rodchenko, emphasise the connection between fashion and architecture and are composed using a purity of line and volume typical of Russian Con-structivism of the 1920s and 1930s.

‘Sunstroke’ was initiat-ed before Olga became a fashion photographer and marked the beginning of her professional career.

She began work on the se-ries in 2008 and it is ongo-ing.

Rarefied, sun-baked air and sharp contrasting shadows define the archi-tectonics of these photos, where, at times, the silhou-ettes of sun worshippers are pushed to the periph-ery.

This compositional tech-nique creates the aesthetic of the shot, which is made furtively, ‘without taking aim’, the image of a pho-tographervoyeur.

At the same time it relays the somnambulistic state of the people who find them-selves in front of the lens, and of the photographer who is spying on them.

‘Journey’ is Olga Izakson’s first museum project.

The exhibition includes two of her most important series, ‘Sunstroke’ (2008 to date) and ‘Louis Vuitton. Journey: Ekaterinburg’ (2012).

The story of the young art-ist’s collaboration with the world famous fashion com-pany began in 2011, when Olga was invited to shoot backstage.

Inspired by the initial project, the Russian representa-tives of Louis Vuitton offered Olga to create a fashion se-ries in which the main ‘pro-tagonists” were the luxury brand’s accessories and the city of Ekaterinburg.

At various times it has been occupied by peasants, col-lective farm workers and weekend holiday makers.

Each change left its mark, and the village was filled with new meanings.

In delving in to the various layers of this past I am trying to catch the mood, whether it be a relaxed, collective, or superstitious.

By mixing all of these states I aim to create a portrait of this place and to make friends with it.

ALBERT WATSONThe globally celebrated Scottish photographer Al-bert Watson (b. 1942) is one of contemporary photogra-phy’s Renaissance Men, working seamlessly across genres, from portraiture to landscape to still life, and making them his own.

His career spans more than four decades, and beyond including some of the fash-ion industry’s most iconic im-ages of all time, his portfolio is as varied as it is distinct-ly his, marked by a deeply intuitive understanding of texture, color, and shape—always at the service of cre-ating dramatic, breathtaking compositions that amount to the visual equivalent of the literary Epic.

There is no limit to the sub-jects across which Watson has trained his lens—and his meticulous eye—capturing the intimate, personal mo-ments of Las Vegas domi-natrixes, dramatic expanses of American desert, or even a starkly lit close-up of King Tutankhamen’s sock.

Indeed, his use of light to transform any object into striking objects worthy of aesthetic worship is one of the defining qualities of his work.

He imbues every image with a compelling psychological depth that both draws view-ers in and commands a level of respectful distance.

As diverse as are his sub-jects, so, too, are his influ-ences and allusions vast and varied.

In his studies of human skin, smooth expanses of flesh are abstracted to evoke swaths of sand or rolling hills—much like the work of Edward Weston.

The influence of commer-cial advertising—and even of Pop art’s masters, from Andy Warhol to Roy Licht-enstein—is evident in the spare, graphic orientation of his figures to ground. He regularly creates stark con-trasts between light and dark, object and shadow, to keep the eye actively mov-ing and vividly involved with his images, which appear to balance composition and gesture as successful-ly as Abstract Expressionist painters from Pollock to de Kooning.

Born and raised in Edin-burgh, Scotland, Albert Watson studied film and tel-evision at the Royal College of Art in London before he moved to the United States in 1970 to launch a career in photography.

He has received many hon-ors, including a Lucie Award for lifetime achievement in photography, a Grammy Award for the cover of the Mason Profitt album, Come and Gone (1975), and three ANDY Awards for creativity in advertising.

On September 9th, 2010, the Royal Photographic So-ciety

awarded him their Cente-nary Medal, which recog-nizes outstanding contribu-tions to the art and science of photography.

Photo District News has named him one of the 20 most influential photogra-phers of all time, and his many monographs and cat-alogues include Cyclops (Bulfinch, 1994), Maroc (Rizzoli, 1998), The Vien-na Album (Schirmer/Mosel, 2005), Albert Watson (Phai-don, 2007), and Il Coniglio Bianco (Contrasto, 2009).

In 2010 PQ Blackwell re-leased two major mono-graphs, UFO (Unified Fash-ion Objectives) and Strip Search, presenting a 40-year retrospective of Wat-son’s work, pulled from his vast archive.

Albert Watson has had solo exhibitions of his work at famed international institu-tions including the Deich-torhallen in Hamburg, Ger-many, Museum of Modern Art in Milan, Italy, Fotograf-iska in Stockholm,

Snowboard World Cup

Mr. Sherman Poppen of Muskegon, that is in the state of Michigan, could not imagine, that toy that he made for his daughter (fas-tening two skis together and attaching a rope to one end), would be so popular that it would even become an Olympic Games discipline.

Initially, this tool was called “Snerfer” and only after many years, it has become a snowboard.

The popularity of snow-boarding had grown to such extent that it was eventually recognised as a sport. As a result, in 1985 the first World Cup was held.

This World Cup will be held in the discipline parallel sla-lom. This kind of competi-tion implies the simultane-ous descent of participants on parallel tracks, which one to one repeat each oth-er. Athletes must pass this route for less than 20-25 seconds, which requires a maximum of concentration from participants.

Once upon a time there lived an old man and woman who had a grand-daughter named Masha.

One day some friends of Masha’s decided to go to the forest to gather mush-rooms and berries and they came to Masha’s house to ask her to go with them.

“Please, Grannie and Grampa,” said Masha, “do let me go to the forest” “You may go but see that you keep close to the oth-ers and do not lose sight of them or you might get lost”, the two old people replied.

Masha and her friends came to the forest and be-gan to hunt for the mush-rooms and berries. From bush to bush, from tree to tree went Masha.

Before she knew it she had strayed away from her friends.

When at last she saw that she was all alone she be-gan to halloo and call to them, but her friends did not hear her and made no answer.

Masha went here and there, she walked all over the forest, and there before her she saw a little hut.

Masha knocked on the door but there was no an-swer, so she gave the door a push and lo! the door opened.

Masha went into the hut and sat down on a bench by the window.

“I wonder who lives here she thought”. Now in that hut lived a great big bear, only he was out walking in the forest just then. It was evening by the time he came home and when he saw Masha he was very pleased.

“Aha”, said he, “now I’ll never let you go!.

You will live here in my house as meek as a mouse, and you will cook my din-ner and my breakfast too, and be my servant, faithful and true.”

Masha grieved and sor-rowed for a long time, but it could not be helped, and so she stayed with the bear and kept house for him.

Every day the bear would go into the forest for the day and before leaving, he would tell Masha to stay in the hut and wait for him.

“You must never go out without me, he told her, for if you do I will catch you and eat you up.”

So Masha sat thing of how she could get away from the bear.

All around was the forest and there was no one to ask which way to go.

She thought and thought until she knew what to do.

That day, when the bear came back from the forest, Masha said to him:

“ Bear, Bear do let me to to my village for a day. I want to take something good to eat for my Grandma and Grandpa.”

“No that wont do at all” said the bear, “you will get lost in the forest, but if you give me what it is you want to give your Grandma and Grandpa, I will take it my-self”.

Now that was all that Ma-sha wanted to hear. She baked some pies, put them on a plate, and getting out a very large basket, said to the bear:

“I’ll put the pies in the basket and you can take them to my Grandma and Grandpa.

But mind you are not to open the basket on the way and you are not to eat any of the pies.

“Very well “, said the bear, “Give me the basket”.

The bear went out on the porch to make sure that it was not raining.

When he did, Masha crawled into the basket and covered herself with the pies.

The bear came in, and there was the basket all ready to go.

So he strapped the basket on his back and started off.

Tramp-tramp went the bear amid the spruce trees.

Clumpity-clumphe went amid the birch trees, up hill and down dale went his long winding trail, and on and on he walked.

At last he got tired and sat down to rest.

“If I don’t rest my bones I think I will die, So I will sit on a stump And I’ll eat a pie”, said the Bear.

But Masha called out from the basket:

“I see you, I see you Don’t sit on the stump And don’t eat my pie But take it to Grandma And Grandpa, say I”.

“Dear me what sharp eyes eyes Masha has”, said the bear, “she sees everything”.

He picked up the basket and went on. He stopped again and said:

“If I don’t rest my bones, I think I will dies, so I’ll sit on a stump and eat a pie”.

But Masha called out again from the basket:

“I see you, I see you! Don’t sit on the stump, and don’t eat my pie, but take it to Grandma and Grandpa, say I”.

“What a clever little girls Masha is”, said the bear.

“She is sitting high up in a tree and she is far away, but she sees all I do and she hears all I say”.

He got to his feet and walked on and on even faster than before.

He came to the village and finding the house where Masha’s grandfather and grandmother lived he be-gan to bang away on the gate with all his might.

“ KNOCK, KNOCK, open the gate”, he cried, “I have brought something for you from Masha, he cried”.

But the village dogs scent-ed the bear and rushed out at him from every yard, yelping and barking.

The bear was frightened, he set down the basket by the gate and away he ran as fast as he could without looking back.

The old man and woman came up to the gate and saw the basket.

“What is in the basket”, the old woman asked.

The old man lifted the top, and looked and he could not believe his eyes.

For there in the basket sat Masha alive and well.

The old man and woman were overjoyed.

They kissed and hugged and embraced.

Masha and they said she was as clever as clever can be, as indeed all our read-ers will surely agree.

Julio Iglesias’ concertThe creative way of Julio Ig-lesias, who’s been dubbed the great Spaniard by the world press , is incredible: more than 300 million cop-ies of 80 albums released throughout the world, more than 5,000 concerts in 600 cities of the world, in 2600 platinum and gold discs, the most prestigious music awards ...

Early in his career, he partici-pated in the Eurovision Song Contest, and soon started conquering countries and continents. Spanish “sing-er’s number one” has toured throughout Europe, receiv-ing standing ovations at the most prestigious concert venues. Conquest of the Americas began with his speech in Los Angeles with Hollywood stars and the subsequent joint record with Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder and many other famous art-ists. But the main event was the release of an American voyage CD “Duets”. Igle-sias has achieved its goal: the patriarch of American pop music, maestro Frank Sinatra invited Iglesias to perform with him “Summer Wind”.

He sings in Spanish, Italian, French, English and Ger-man. This will not
