Thank you for my care.” “The staff were caring, compassionate and so understanding.” Dr. Jake Flinkman, who works in the Marshalltown ER, practiced social distancing from his family for 43 days and nights. Dr. Flinkman Practices Social Distancing for Family, Patients Parenting is tough business. Now, consider what that would be like if you were socially distancing from your wife and kids. Through a pandemic. Such was life for Dr. Jake Flinkman, who works in the emergency depart- ment at UnityPoint Health – Marshall- town. When COVID-19 started to surge, he did what many other provid- ers across the nation did. He kept his distance from his family to keep them safe, while ensuring he would stay as healthy as possible for the community that needed him. So, for 43 days and nights, Dr. Flink- man was unable to hug his wife, Molly, or embrace their children, Lily, 7, Norah, 5, Sawyer, 3, and Jude, 1. Dr Jake Flinkman who works in the Marshalltown ER practiced social distancing from his family for 43 days and nights

Dr Flinkman Practices Social Distancing for Family PatientsParenting is tough business Now consider what that would be like if you were socially distancing from your wife and kids Through a pandemic

Such was life for Dr Jake Flinkman who works in the emergency depart-ment at UnityPoint Health ndash Marshall-town When COVID-19 started to surge he did what many other provid-ers across the nation did He kept his distance from his family to keep them safe while ensuring he would stay as healthy as possible for the community that needed him

So for 43 days and nights Dr Flink-man was unable to hug his wife Molly or embrace their children Lily 7 Norah 5 Sawyer 3 and Jude 1

He spent many nights in a separate living area at the home of Dr Lance VanGundy the ER Medical Director in Marshalltown Other times he hun-kered down in his familyrsquos three-season

An MRI was ordered for a patient on the medsurg floor Davin Kruse was going over the pre-MRI screening form and discovered the patient had a pacemaker which meant this patient could not have an MRI An MRI for this patient could have changed the pace-maker settings or caused damage to the pacemaker This thorough screening by Davin was a true great catch Thank you for your diligence and for keeping your patient safe Davin

Through it all he tried to be as present and impactful as possible He visit-ed with his family by Facetime and dropped by the house to read a book through the sliding glass door or play checkers from a different room with an extension pole and paint roller rod

ldquoBy the end of that six-week period I was driving home almost every day I was off and spending time with my fami-ly and just keeping my distancerdquo Dr Flinkman says ldquoIt was particularly chal-lenging for my youngest son Jude who didnrsquot understand why he couldnrsquot hug dad or why dad couldnrsquot come inside

ldquoAt one point I couldnrsquot keep him from trying to come close to me so I climbed on the roof of my garage so I could watch the kids play and also talk with my wife without putting Jude at riskrdquo

At other times Dr Flinkman would play charades Battleship and tic-tac-toe

sometimes using dry erase markers on opposite sides of a glass door

ldquoIt was very inconvenientrdquo he said ldquoI was unable to show previously routine physical affection to my wife and kids I was unable to scoop up Jude in my arms when he skinned his knee and had to bear the per-plexed look in his tear-filled eyes as he waited for Molly to make the trek across the yard to render aid And it was challenging to maintain a role of disciplinarian for my kids when I was unable to later hug them and tell them I love themrdquo

Your life has been full of fear You Google survival rates for your cancer and you are forced to face the question of your own mortality Your goals change and now family means more than anything It is your biggest reason to live and you count each moment as a blessing COVID-19 hits

You need the lifesaving and unending tests required to keep your care plan intact Your immune system has been whittled down to near nothing In the past you feared even the common cold but now COVID-19 is a deadly dragon to your survival You are grateful for COVID-19 screening sites mdash they are a source of reassurance as you enter the hospital for your test Each masked person you pass eases your anxiety and you are thankful for an organization with high infection control standards and the caregiv-ers who support this effort On this day your journey felt a little safer and a lot less scary

This scenario is all too real for so many of our at-risk patients A big shout out to the many unselfish team members who come to work each day entering our hospital fully masked To our patients this is an unselfish act of compassion and you are their heroes

Masking is required at all entries to our hospital for all team members No one is allowed to walk in our patient-protective halls unmasked

Why Because itrsquos the right thing to do for our at-risk patients Itrsquos our act of com-passion

New Module Assigned in NetLearningA new ldquoPatient Rightsrdquo NetLearn-ing module has been assigned to all team members Please note the deadline for completion of this specific module is July 15

As a reminder the rest of the standardized 2020 NetLearning modules assigned at the start of the year are due by October 31

What an exciting time to be at UnityPoint Health ndash Marshalltown Our plans for the South Campus consolidation and expan-sion is moving full steam ahead and itrsquos been fun to see the project taking shape

bull Recently department leaders and front-line team representative groups worked with INVISION our architect partner to provide further input to high-level floorplans and determine where each room will be in the build-ings on campus

bull Finalizing high-level floorplans allows

Graham our construction partner to firm up groundbreaking plans Marketing is brainstorming what a groundbreaking event will look like

bull This week these same groups are slated to approve final designs and move into equipment planning with our Medical Equipment Planner Jodelle with VOC

bull Next steps with INVISION include designing floorplans within the rooms and spaces Input from EVERYONE is needed to make workflows optimal
