INTRODUCTION
REPORT INTRODUCTION COMMENTS:
At the request of Mr. William T. White III, the prospective buyer of a Moody 47 Custom, a 1985 47 foot
sail boat, I agreed to conduct a pre-purchase and valuation survey. I arrived at the vessel's location onJanuary 21st 2014 at 8:00AM and met with the Mr. William T. White III. Mr. Richard Jordan and the vessel owner
Mr. Lloyd Cosby were on the vessel when I arrived. The vessel was located at located at 1213 Orange Isle Fort
Lauderdale, FL 33315. The survey was conducted from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
The weather on the day of the survey was cool with partly cloudy skies. Moisture readings were taken of the vessel
with a calibrated Model GRP 33 Marine Moisture Meter.
DC power was made available during the survey to the vessel. AC power was available from the ships shore power
in addition to the vessels onboard generator. The vessel's diesel engine was started and operated during the sea trial.
During a vessel's survey the mandatory standards promulgated by the United States Coast Guard (USCG),under the authority of title 46 United States Code (USC), Title 33, and Title 46, Code of Federal
Regulations (CFR), and the voluntary standards and recommended practices developed by the American
Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) have been used as
guidelines in the conduct of this survey. Findings in the summary pages of this survey reflect conditions
observed at the time of survey.

Vessel Surveyed At: 1213 Orange Isle, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315.
Weather Conditions: Cloudy skies with moderate rain and cool temperature was 62 degrees.
How Survey Conducted: The vessel was surveyed both while afloat & hauled out of the water.
Sea trail: A sea trial was performed as part of this survey. The results are included in the Sea
Trail section.

AC shore power was used to check AC electrical systems. DC power was used to
check DC electrical systems.
Moisture Checks: The calibrated Electrophysics moisture meter, Model GRP33 was used for

Vessel Description: The vessel "One Life" is a 1985 Moody sailing vessel that is forty six feet six
inches in length and fourteen feet six inches at her widest breadth. She is acenterboard design keel that draws four feet six inches with the keel up and nine
feet six inches with the keel down. The vessel is a sloop rig design featuring power
roller furling and main sail that is mast furling. All winches are power with manual
backup. The vessels auxiliary engine is a four cylinder diesel perkins engine
couples with an Onan brand 8KW generator.
ONE LIFE sleeps a total of 7, 4 in 2 staterooms plus 3 in salon, and has 2 heads.
All berths and settees have lee cloths. She is finished in gloss-varnished teak and
has a varnished teak and holly sole.
There are two, reverse cycle, Cruiseair air conditioning units, one on the starboard
side for the main salon and Guest Stateroom, and one on the port side for the mainsalon and aft cabin. There are 12V fans in various locations throughout for good
air circulation and cooling. Realistic speakers are in the forward, main and aft
cabins, as well as the cockpit.
Forward is a deck-accessed locker (just aft of the anchor locker) also accessed from
the forward head. The forward head is finished in white Formica with teak trim
and has a mosaic tiled vanity countertop with a stainless steel sink; hot and cold
pressure water, and a telephone-type shower and a Traveler Sea Land Technology
Vacu-flush toilet. The hatch overhead includes a Nicro-fico exhaust outlet. A teak
door leads aft to the Guest Stateroom.
This very comfortable Guest Stateroom has teak access doors, both forward andaft, one with full-length mirror. This stateroom has a large offset double berth, to
starboard, and a single berth to port with storage below the bunks. Two overhead
opening hatches afford great ventilation and natural light, and there are two
Realistic stereo speakers and fans. Storage is provided by a large hanging locker
with double doors on the starboard side. There is another hanging locker on the
forward end of the single berth on the port side. In addition, there are large storage
lockers outboard on the port side (above the single berth) and there are two large
storage shelves and another storage locker outboard and above the double berth.

Aft from the forward stateroom, through a varnished teak door, is the Main Salon
with a huge dinette with a Hi-Lo, extendable table to starboard that could allow
seating for 8+ people. The main bulkhead has beautiful brass lamps, a beveled
mirror, and a brass clock and barometer. All new upholstery (2013). Outboard and
starboard are storage lockers with cane facing, and two stereo speakers, port and
starboard. Outboard and above the dinette starboard is a built-in bookshelf and
additional shelf storage. There is similar storage above the port settee. There is a
15-inch LCD TV.
A large walk-through Galley is next, aft to starboard, with mosaic tile countertops.
Generator and engine access is in this area.
At the end of the port side settee is a forward facing sit-down Navigation Station
with a swivel nav seat with arms, full instrumentation, and a large chart table.
Moving aft on the port side of the vessel and through a door is the Aft Head for the
Aft Guest Stateroom, finished in white Formica, with tile countertop on the vanity
and a stainless steel sink. Outboard of this vanity are two storage lockers. There is
a Raritan PH toilet. Moving forward is a separate stall shower with a seat and
pull-around curtain. Storage locker space is under and outboard of the seat. Thetelephone shower hose is long enough to extend through the opening port light and
offers a sit-down deck shower.
The main entrance to the full-width Master Stateroom is aft of the galley. There is
a large, centerline, double berth. Storage lockers are port and starboard. The cabin
sides and cabinetry are all semi-gloss. Outboard and to starboard are two large
hanging lockers. There are two stereo speakers and a 10 inch LCD TV/DVD. The
forward bulkhead has another beveled mirror. There is an iron and ironing board
inside the hanging locker. On the starboard side of the berth is an L-shaped seat
and behind and below is more storage.

SURVEY STANDARDSStandards Followed: This survey was completed using as reference the federal regulations and
amendments issued and enforced by the United States Coast Guard under the
authority of Title 33 and Title 46 of the United States Code of Federal Regulations
(CFR's). In addition the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and National
Fire Protection Association (NFPA-302) voluntary standards were used as
reference during the survey. These ABYC and NFPA voluntary standard practices
are generally followed by most vessel manufacturers today.

Bottom paint:
Minor areas of flaking bottom paint noted. ------ Remove loose flaking paint, spot
sand areas and touch up peeling/flaking areas prior to next launch.
Osmotic blistering: NO evidence of blisters was found on hull bottom during bottom inspection.
Blister Comments: Blisters are an unknown factor on all boats and if not currently present, there is no
guarantee that they will not appear in the future. Blisters have a tendency to dry
out over winter storage unless severe or large. Blisters (if any) best appear after
vessel has been in water for an entire season. In addition, the symptomatic
evidence of blistering can be obscured by bottom coatings, a dry storage period
during which blisters spontaneously depressurize, bottom laminate sanding, and
other conditions or actions. Recommend full inspection for blisters immediately
after haul-out and power wash. Surveyor has no firsthand knowledge of the historyof bottom maintenance, blistering, repairs or prophylactic coatings on this vessel.
Moisture/Delamination: Moisture meter readings not taken since the type of bottom paint used would
provide false moisture readings. Percussion hammer testing showed no evidence of
any delamination on hull bottom.
Grounding damage: None noted.

check for possible delamination was done using a percussion sounding and no
indication was indicated. The area showed no blistering. Inspection from the inside
was not possible due to access. Anomaly could be consistent with water between
bottom paint coat. Recommend when vessel is hauled, allow bottom to dry for 24
hours and have the bottom inspected by a qualified fiberglass marine technician for
further action.

Keel type:
Center board dropped -lead. Swing center board.
Keel condition:
Keel is well secured and well faired into hull. No cracks or separation sighted at
hull to keel joint. Several blisters were sighted on the keel. Monitor blisters in

Several soft blisters were sighted on the keel. Monitor blisters and repair if condition becomes worse.

no cracks, corrosion or bent, nicked or chipped blades. Prop nut is secure and
properly locked in place with jam nut and properly cotter pinned.

sighted. Line cutter mounted on the shaft.

follows: One small void area on rudder starboard side showed what appears to be a

Hull mounted:
"Camp" anode securely mounted on transom. Good condition. No deterioration
sighted. One ground/anode securely mounted on hull bottom. No deterioration
sighted.
Bonding: Yes.Other Notes: Monitor all anodes frequently and replace when they are no more than 50%
wasted. Anodes are normal replacement items designed to protect the running gear
from electrolysis. Keep spares aboard vessel.

Bilge(s): Clean and dry. NOTE: Whenever you visit your boat, it's good practice to check
the bilge area(s) for higher than normal levels of water or anything else that could
be causing trouble.
Stringers:
Hull stiffness provided by FRP covered wooden longitudinal stringers that run the
length of the vessel. Complete inspection not possible due to limited access.
Stringers were sighted in the engine compartment and under cabin sole and are well
glassed into hull where sighted. Stringers sounded with hammer where accessible
and appeared very sound. No soft spots, separation, cracks rotting or splitting
sighted. Limber holes appear to be adequately sealed where sighted. Stringers
checked with Moisture meter where accessible and all readings were relatively
Dry.
Bulkheads: Athwartships reinforcement enhanced by structural bulkheads bonded to the hull
with FRP (fiber reinforced plastic). All tabbing appears serviceable and sound
with no cracks or separation of tabbing sighted in any compartments. No visual
evidence of movement sighted in any bulkhead.

valves be of the lever activated type. Gate valves are not recommended as they jam
easily and open/closed status cannot be visually discerned. Ball valve type is

tapered threads, so the through hull fittings should be changed to those that match
the valves. If Marelon is used, the manufacturer recommends replacement of the
through hull fitting with one of Marelon as well.Sea strainers:

ELECTRIC PUMPS:
Two electric pumps. Located at: Midship / Central bilge, Rule 12 volt, 2000 GPH,
Pumps power up when switched on manually.
MANUAL PUMPS: Whale manual operated bilge pump. Appears serviceable. Manual bilge pump
handle was sighted on board. Handle should be located in vicinity of pump to use
when required.
Bilge Pump Comments: CAUTION---- Bilge pumps are high maintenance items. Bilge pumps are only the
initial part of a de-watering system, which may include a strum-box, check-valves
or occasionally anti-siphon loops and valves, piping, a seacock if the exit is below
waterline and a thru-hull tailpiece. This entire system must be understood and
maintained. Bilge pumps may fail at any time. No warranty as to longevity can be
expressed or implied at survey. Tapered wooden plugs tied to seacocks are aninexpensive safety item and highly recommended under current ABYC standards.
Keeping bilges clean and free of debris is a vital part of insuring proper operation.
It is also recommended that each bilge pump be periodically tested by filling the
immediate bilge area with water, to ensure the pump(s) and float switch(s) are
operating as designed.

Detectors:
NOTE: During the burning of any of fuels, Carbon Monoxide ( CO ) gas may be
created due to incomplete combustion from propulsion systems, cabin heater or
stove as well as nearby boats running generators. Adequate ventilation must be
provided at all times while burning any of these fuels, but CO may also be drawn
into the cabin through ventilation systems. This is especially true of boats running
air conditioning. CO is a silent menace and kills without warning, Regular testing
of installed CO detectors in any occupied spaces below decks is highly
recommended.

SEA TRIAL OBSERVATIONS
Start test: Engine started properly during the power up phase of the sea trial.
Cranking: The engine(s) started without excessive cranking. Engine alarms are functional.
Exhaust smoke: The engine(s) exhaust smoke was minimal and appeared normal throughout the sea
trial.
Instruments: The engine instruments all operated and within normal operating limits at idle, andmaximum throttle. ( See "Engine Instrument Readings" below. )
Auto Pilot: Auto pilot was tested and found fully functional.
Thrusters system: Bow thruster worked properly backing out as well as entering the slip.
Steering: Steering worked properly when tested. The vessel steered a complete radius of
approximately 00 feet on the starboard and port turns hard over. Vessel stability
was good during turning.
Throttle levers: The throttles controls worked properly and smoothly during the sea trial.
Transmissions: The transmissions operated normally/smoothly.
Backdown: The back down test was satisfactory. Engine mounts secure & No unusual
movement of the engine(s) was sighted.
Vibrations Vibrations and engine noise were minimal during the sea trial.
Shaft Log: The packless shaft seal system remained dry throughout the sea trial for bothshafts.
Shaft Creep: There was NO noticeable shaft creep with engine(s) running and with gears in
neutral.
Leaks: No leaks were sighted in any of the lines or hull spaces of the vessel.
Generator: Generator output was recorded at 120 Volts and maintained voltage with all air
conditioners running during the sea trial.
Air Conditioner: All air conditioners functioned properly in both heat and cooling modes.

INSPECTION RECOMMENDATIONS SUMMARY
PRIORITY I - SAFETY & REGULATORY RECOMMENDATIONS:
(MAY BE MANDATORY)The items listed are required by state laws or federal laws and U.S.C.G. regulations or are considered by the
attending surveyor to represent unsafe operating conditions. Recommend these items be corrected before next use
of vessel.
U.S.C.G. REQUIREDFindings: No life jackets (PFD's) sighted on board.
Recommendations: One USCG approved personal flotation device (PFD Type I, Type II, Type III or Type V) must be available foreach person on board. This is a Federal regulation as stated in 33 CFR 175.15. In addition it should be noted thatchildren under 13 years of age must wear an appropriate PFD or remain below decks in an enclosed cabin.
PRIORITY II - MAINTENANCE & STANDARDS RELATED RECOMMENDATIONS:
(NOT NORMALLY MANDATORY)These are important maintenance items sighted which in this firm's opinion should be performed. They may also
include recommendations to conform to current ABYC and NFPA-302 voluntary standards which may not have
been in effect or may not have been adhered to by the builder when the vessel was constructed. Some of these, if
not addressed, could lead to a Priority I safety issue and/or may result in a reduced vessel market value.
HULL BOTTOMFindings: Anomalies were sighted when scanned using a FLIR thermal camera. A further check for possible delamination
was done using a percussion sounding and no indication was indicated. The area showed no blistering.Inspection from the inside was not possible due to access. Anomaly could be consistent with water between
bottom paint coat.
Recommendations: Recommend when vessel is hauled, allow bottom to dry for 24 hours and have the bottom inspected by aqualified fiberglass marine technician for further action.
RUDDER
Findings: One small void area on rudder starboard side showed what appears to be a void in the fiberglass.
Recommendations: Have a qualified fiberglass marine technician inspect the rudder and repair or replace as required.
MAST/BOOM
Findings: Gooseneck stainless steel fasteners are broken.
Recommendations: Have a qualified rigger replace gooseneck fasteners.AC ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Findings: Wire nuts sighted for some wiring connections. Control box located in master stateroom hanging locker showssigns of excessive corrosion and is no longer mounted.
Recommendations: Replace all wire nut connectors with crimp on butt connectors (preferably waterproof) or terminal strips to complywith current ABYC E-11 recommendations. Replace junction control box and remount in hanging locker.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:These are other less significant maintenance items or observations that if not addressed, could lead to more
important priority issues and/or could lead to a reduced vessel market value. The cost of addressing these
recommendations is generally minimal.
HULL EXTERIOR
Findings: Stainless steel portion of the rub rail is detached from the forward starboard side.Recommendations:Attach rub rail.
KEEL
Findings: Several soft blisters were sighted on the keel.
Recommendations: Monitor blisters and repair if condition becomes worse.
THRU HULL FITTINGS
Findings: Forward head seacock handle is stiff and difficult to operate.
Recommendations: Have a qualified technician inspect seacock handle and repair, lube extend handle or replace as required for
proper operation.
