In Ireland, we have lots of lush green grass because of our mild wet climate. This means that Irish cows can graze on grass for up to 300 days per year. Irish dairy is renowned worldwide for its high-quality grass-based production system. Our milk comes from 18,500 farms, many of which are family owned and have been rearing cows for generations. Cows are milked twice a day in milking parlours, once in the morning and once in the evening. A driver from the dairy collects the milk in a refrigerated tanker which is cleaned every day. When you drink Irish milk you can be sure that you are enjoying world-class quality milk from grass-fed cows. Milk is poured into recyclable bottles and cartons and delivered to shops, homes and schools around Ireland. Empty cartons and bottles of milk should be cleaned, flattened and recycled. The milk is tested and heated to a high temperature (pasteurisation) and cooled quickly. Celebrate National School Milk Week March 2nd to March 6th with our Moo Crew Dairy Challenge!
