Jimmy works as an engineer for Ford Motor Company and recently returned from Mexico City, which has a population of 20 million! He lived there for three years while he taught new engineers his trade. Jimmy said he liked the weather in Mexico because it was 85 degrees nearly every day. He also liked being surrounded by mountains, palm trees, and tropical birds, and said that he enjoyed the kind, hard-working people, and the food. However, while he was there he missed his family, friends, and home near Detroit. You will probably see Jimmy this sum- mer out on the lake entertaining others on his pontoon boat. But that’s behind us so let’s celebrate!

The water may still be chilly, but that does not stop us; summer

2014 Regatta Discussed

By: Jon Carlisle

There has been talk of resurrecting

the Monocle Lake Regatta in one

form or another. Talk among several

Lakers recently resulted in a plan for

a pre-regatta gathering on Friday,

Aug. 8, at Jimmy Claxton's cabin,

and a day of sailing and fun on the

Cove beach on Saturday, Aug. 9.

The Regatta, initially known as the

Monocle Lake Two-Moon Regatta,

began in 2000 and was held annually

for 12 years, but interest waned and

the event was not on the calendar in

2013.

the pirates are going to win this

year!)

Jon and Barb Carlisle, who live at 1818 South

Monocle Lake Rd., are building a 24x26ft garage. It is going to be two

stories tall. They hope to have it done by September. They are build-

ing it with the help of Elgon Ellis, who is a cement layer, and their

daughter Katie. Jon said they are building the garage because they are

planning on living up here full time, so they will need it for cars and

storage. So, if you live near Jon and Barb’s house and you hear a lot of

banging going on, it is for the garage.

Monocle Lake’s very own Lilli Kelgar, age 11, is

with her friend

and teammate

Aliah Robertson.

Both girls are

members of the

Northern Storm

Aquatic Club,

which is a competitive swim club in Sault, Canada.

Both girls just competed in Ottawa the weekend of

June 27-28th where their relay teams placed 4

times! Lilli, who is the daughter of Tara and Clem

Kelgar and granddaughter of Caroline and Pete

Behling, said she has been swimming for 8 years.

Her qualifying time for this latest meet in the 50

meter freestyle was 32.57 seconds! That is fast,

considering that the current female world record is

held by Germany’s Britta Steffen at 23.73 seconds!

To get to this level of competition the girls said

they practice in the early mornings, for 2 hours

each practice, at least 5 days a week, all year. The

next time you see Lilli on the beach you might want

to think twice before challenging her to a race.

Keep it up Lilli and Aliah! By: Autumn

Have you seen Logan Mikenneth Peake, age 9, practicing baseball in

front of his grandpa Dennis Parrish’s home? That is because Logan is

on the Brimley baseball team. Logan said he has been playing base-

ball for 3 years, and that his favorite position is catcher. Logan said

he also enjoys playing basketball and football, and that his other hob-

bies include playing video games and sleeping.

Have you seen this new sign in our neighborhood? It is in front of Steve and Christine Kois’ home, and they earned it

from the National Wildlife Foundation by “creating a garden space that improves habitat for birds, butterflies, frogs and other wildlife by providing essential elements needed by all

wildlife – natural food sources, clean water, cover, and places to raise young.” -Source NWF

Lakers Reunite Lost Boy With Family by: Jon Carlisle

Little 3-year-old Josh was happily reunited with his parents recent Saturday, thanks to the efforts of a couple of Monocle Lakers.

Josh, whose family was camped at the far south end of Monocle Lake Campground, became separated from his sister and disoriented,

and was discovered running north on S. Monocle Lake Road, crying for his father.

Rick Arbic and Jon Carlisle had been standing near the road, discussing Carlisle's garage project with mason Elgon Ellis, when the boy

ran past. Sensing that something was wrong, Arbic chased after the boy while Carlisle rode his bike to the campground to see if he had

been reported missing.

Sure enough, the boy's father was found talking to other campers at the campsite nearest the path that connects the park with S.

Monocle Lake Road. Meanwhile, Arbic quickly caught up to the boy, comforted him and took him into his arms, and was walking

south with him when Carlisle and the boy's father met them on the connecting path.

The father explained that an older sister had been responsible for watching the boy, but they had become separated and the boy ap-

parently panicked.

The boy's family is from Sault, Mich.
