‘Fangame’ has a tacky feeling to it. We associate this with bad flash games, shoddy ROM hacks, or low-effort RPG Maker warez. The MOTHER/Earthbound community is known for a few ROM hacks- with various degrees of quality ranging from ‘unheard of for a reason ’ to ‘an excellent translation for English speakers’ to ‘this is how the creator of UNDERTALE got a following ’.

Anyone in the community is well aware of the MOTHER 4 pro-ject, which is creating a completely new title in the fashion of the previ-ous episodes, with a completely fresh cast and plot but the same quirkiness (and Mr. Saturns). As the crew received some complaint from Nintendo, the project is un-dergoing a facelift so it bears no relation to the previous works. However, since the game is said to be ‘coming in Winter 2014’ your craving for more quirky-yet-classic RPG will have to wait.

Or, it doesn’t have to. There’s a little-known project called ‘MOTHER: Cognitive Dissonance’, sometimes referred to as CogDis. Why is it little-known? That’s a dang good question, seeing as it ’s finished and is likely more than MOTHER 4 could have dreamed of being.

CogDis, created by otherhand aka hand-ish2000, is fanon that bridges the plot gap between the classic MOTHER 2/Earthbound and the grindy, less-respected MOTHER. If you haven’t played at least MOTHER 2 and heard the plot of MOTHER, the game won ’t make nearly as much sense. You don ’t have to grind through the boring nuisance of MOTH-ER in order to make sense of Cognitive Disso-nance, though.

CogDis also does something that the rest of the MOTHER series (save MOTHER 3 to some extent) has never really done- explore the ‘baddies’ and the weird aliens. In fact, that’s (almost) all this game is! Your direct interaction with the human race is very minor- taking the backseat to an inter-planetary ad-

venture. Strap in and enjoy this rollercoaster of unlikely heroes and alien cultures. What ’s the deal with Starmen? Why are Mr. Saturns… Mr. Saturns? What is Giyig? What was Buzz Buzz? But, be prepared to leave with as many questions: who is the greyface? Is that Fobby the true destroyer of worlds? Did I complete all the sidequests?

Thematically, the game is much more MOTHER 2- you ’re time-hopping, space-hopping, dimension-hopping, there’s aliens, everything’s crazy. But the story is more MOTHER 3- the connection to characters is much stronger.

The game starts by setting you up for some low expectations. You start in control of a Mook and advance the plot by walking slow-ly and only in 4 directions. The inability to walk diagonally- something even MOTHER had- seems like a bad omen, but that ’s sur-prisingly the only real complaint I have with the gameplay mechanics, and it ’s something you get used to. The game pokes fun at this when you get a spaceship upgrade called ‘diagonal thrusters’. Not being able to run is alright, since for the most part, the maps are laid out more densely and interestingly. In

gameplay, though, Cog-Dis actually tries more interesting things than any MOTHER game be-fore it. Starmen have the ability to ‘warp’, trampolines allow inter-esting movement, and (by chapter 7) you can pilot a spaceship around a solar system filled with easter eggs and sidequests. In addition, the battle system is completely new and unique. While MOTHER 2/3 love the rolling HP meter and MOTHER 3 implements combo hits to make RPG battle more interesting and time-sensitive, Cog-Dis takes time-sensitivity to a whole new level: there are no ‘turns’. You have a turn-

meter that fills up individually for each party member, and then they can make their move. The rate at which it fills is based on status ail-ments and your speed stat- meaning you can’t rely on any particular order of moves, or even that you ’ll get to heal your party before the enemy attacks again.

If you loved the music of the MOTHER series, you will not be disappointed by CogDis- with a whole suite of music playing homage to the original themes we love, as well as new tunes which while new, are unique to CogDis yet still thematically fit the MOTHER series.

I mentioned sidequests earlier. If you love sidequests and multiple endings, you ’ll enjoy getting all 5 endings from CogDis- a bad end-ing, a good ending, a joke ending, the ‘severance’ ending, and the ‘paradox’ ending. You will not be disappointed by the fill of easter eggs- even Russel’s Teapot.

If you didn’t feel closure from MOTHER 3, just want more, or need a good explanation for the events from MOTHER 1-2, get this fangame now- for free on Windows.

A Review of Mother: Cognitive Dissonance

On this page, we cover a lot of superhero flicks. Between the Marvel Cinematic Uni-verse, the (quick google search) DC Extended Universe (so that ’s what they’re calling it…) and whatever label you apply to sorta-kinda superhero movies like Ghost Busters, we have sampled quite the smorgasbord of superhero stories. After a while, you tend to get jaded. There are only so many glowy apocalypse light show finales one can sit through before the genre as a whole begins to lose its luster. In-deed, we have been distracted by many a su-perhero film in recent years (sometimes even pleasantly so), but it has been a long time since we covered a super-hero movie that was genuinely entertaining from the opening logos to the closing credits. And yet, Chris McKay ’s

2017 Animated Feature manages to do just that.

Which just goes to show, Batman can save anything aside from Jason Todd.

The Lego Batman Movie, at the surface level, has a rather simplistic concept: as amazing as being Batman is, the parts in be-tween saving the city are kinda pointless. Add in a city moving beyond vigilantism, a villain feeling neglected by his arch-nemesis, and a comically wide eyed orphan and you have

yourself a textbook recipe for a feel good “Family is im-portant,” film. However, the movie then takes this rather cookie-cutter concept and makes it its own, adding in the kind of self-aware sarcastic flair that the original Lego Movie pioneered. The Lego Batman Movie pro-vides a level of sustained, but unforced, comedy that is hard to find these days. Instead of trying to construct a climactic battle with some scenes to spur emotional investment, the film creates endearing characters and lets the scenes, pugnacious or otherwise, de-rive from them. Batman (Will Arnett) is enthralling in his ego, every bit the caped cru-sader we have come to expect,

but a true joy to watch even off the streets of Gotham. It is no exaggeration to say that he can make the act of microwaving dinner a tru-ly iconic scene.

This is not to say that Batman was the on-ly performance worth caring about, far from it. Robin (Michael Cera), Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson), Alfred (Ralph Fiennes), and The Joker (Zach Galifianakis) all have their moments to shine. Whether it is the way Robin manages to make you want to give him a puppy and punt him into a ravine at the same time, or the Joker’s beautifully executed relationship drama with Batman (it makes sense in context) there are no scenes which exist merely to ‘advance the plot.’

Where The Lego Batman Movie truly shines however, is in its dialogue with the au-dience. While it does not go to the full fourth wall breaking lengths that Deadpool has been acclaimed for, Lego Batman manages to make the audience feel included throughout. The litany of allusions and shout outs aside, the film masterfully plays with the audience ’s ex-pectations to deliver a story that both fondly remembers the clichés and tropes of the gen-re, and seeks to poke fun at some of the more… egregious moments.

All in all, The Lego Batman Movie is one of those rare finds not made by Disney during the 90’s which you can enjoy as either a ten year old or a twenty year old.

This past year has seen a large shift from the norm in hip -hop culture. Songs created for release now focus more on thought and feel ings rather than lyrics and strong narratives . Rappers l ike Kendrick Lamar and Jay Z have even fol lowed this trend with their releases of DAMN. and 4:44. XXXTENTACION piques heavy inter-est among hip hop l isteners today after the release of his latest album, 17 , which uses the same concept to give us a better per-spective of the mental turmoil he has faced.

Facing cr iminal charges while deal ing with the newfound fame and the loss of his signif icant other together as young as he is seems to really have taken a tol l on him. The album is really good, however it is pretty messed up. But X accomplishes his goals of putting the l istener into that wavelength to gain a better understanding of the emotional processes he is going through.

With albums l ike Luv is Rage 2 and 17 sett ing the tone for fal l 2017 hip hop, it begs the question: is rap moving away from the album concept and more towards musical releases as art and perspective pieces?

It started with Kendrick when he re-leased untit led unmastered and then Gam-bino when he dropped the Redbone album, an album with an art ist ic vibe. Drake re-leased his More Life playlist , which gave artists a huge opportunity to drop some crazy projects . As “The Culture” coming from art ists l ike Future, Migos, and 21 Savage keeps f lowing from Atlanta, I think these trends wil l continue to be a thing for the next couple years before the next wave.

Mass Media and streaming services have transit ioned todays music away from traditional track releases and have begun to blend with skits to convey emotion and perspective through thought and feeling evoking tones rather than in lyrics. Sparking emotion through sound as an atmos-phere rather than through lyr ics.

However, today ’s rap game has a new hero, a r ising star in Dieuson Octave, better known as Kodak Black. With the release of Project Baby Two Kodak brought back the tradit ional album concept which, while it lacked concise and signifi-cant meaning, it was ful l of fun beats and lyr ics del ivered in tradi-t ional album style. I am excited to see what this young prodigy wil l continue to produce as t ime contin-

ues. Another Florida rapper, Kodak just lays

it al l out on the beat. He ’s incredibly blunt in his opinions and lyrics, and mixing them with fun beats and a cr iminal back-ground, you have a fun album to l isten to during a workout , party, or stuff l ike that.

I ’m pretty happy with the way rap has been going this year. I ’m on the lookout for more dope shit to be peeped and I ’m ready to see what the future holds, as well as what Future holds up in his studio.

The men’s soccer team won the game against North Cen-

tral on Saturday in double overtime. It only took the team over 200 minutes to score the first and last goal of the game but they did what they needed to do to win; score more goals than the opposing team. The victory against North Central will go down as the first win for the 2017 season. Rose Hul-man will go back to action again on Tuesday.

Our Women’s team is just beginning their season as

they are only 0-2 and still have a lot of time to improve and prove themselves. Olivet improved to 2-0 with the win as they upset Franklin College on Friday night. The Fightin’ Engineers will return to the field on Tuesday against Greenville in their home opener. Kickoff from the Intramural Field will be at 6 pm on September 5th.

The Rose-Hulman football team gave the fans a thrilling game to start off the sea-son. This game literally came down to the last play as Rose-Hulman pulled off a one point win over the Blue Boys.

The game was tied 26-26 with 59 sec-onds left in the game when Raymond Burtnick caught a 63-yard touchdown pass from the freshman Andrew Dion to give the Fightin’ Engineers a 32-26 lead. Matt Mur-ray finished the drive by booting in the ex-tra point to give Rose-Hulman a 33-26 lead.

Illinois College marched down the field and ended up on the 30-yard line with five seconds remaining in the game. Drew Chance connected with Kyle Obertino for a 16-yard pass before Kyle laterally pitched the ball to Logan Uyetake who ran the ball in to make the score 33-32.

The Blue Boys had two options at this point in the game: to kick the extra point and send the game into overtime or to go for two to win the game. They decided to go for it all and to try to win the game.

Chance threw a pass to the corner of the endzone which was broken up by Alec Thompson to secure the win for the Fightin’

Engineers. This victory was a sweet taste of re-

venge as the Engineers lost to the Blue Boys last season by one point.

The Rose-Hulman football team will have their home opener this Saturday even-ing against Millikin at 7pm.
